I and several of the Barrow-Downs regulars have been experimentally building a MUSH.

Our MUSH is a text-based series of interconnected 'rooms'. You can travel from place to place, moving across Middle-Earth as you go. We were inspired by the Elendor MUSH, a truly wonderful place. And many things at the Downs MUSH will just be sad clones of what I saw there. So it should be obvious that our MUSH is not meant to be in any kind of coompetition with them.

It's purpose is to allow us Tolkien fanatics to build a world in Middle-Earth's image... from the ground up.... staying true to the book when we can. We use our knowldge of M-E to build our favorite places. And when we are done, we can roam around and chat or role-play in them. It would be pretty nice if there were many people, both old friends and strangers, roaming around and having fun on our MUSH.

But we have a question to ask that will help to define the MUSH. What time frame should we use? We are currently building in the later third age, but we need to get more specific. Perhaps we need to pick a new time altogether. Perhaps a good Second Age version of Middle-Earth would be exciting!

So.... Lets put our heads together. Everyone. Old friends and strangers. What Age Middle-Earth do you think would be fun to recreate and roam around in. And what specific time frame in that Age should we choose? ALL suggestions will be considered. And after discussing it here we'll choose a timeframe and get started seriously building.

Please tell what Age and time we should create our MUSH in.

Just a note. You don't have to pick a definite timeframe right away. Just throw out some good suggestions and we'll discuss it til we pick a good one.

Re: The Barrow-Downs MUSH

I say Third Age, towards the end.

The most interesting things happened then; the muster of Sauron's allies, the reappearence of the Ring, Gondor's hopeless war against the East, Arnor restored, closely-packed action with the Dunedain and the Ringwraiths, Gandalf's revealing of power and all that.

Re: The Barrow-Downs MUSH

I have three times I am considering:

1) Second Age - there would be both MEN and ELVES everywhere.... and Sauron!!
2) Mid-Third Age - At the height of the Realm of Angmar... but no Shire
3) Late Third Age - Everything we know and love... but not sure of specific date. Pre-Bilbo? Pre-Aragorn?

Mid Third Age there would still be hobbits on the Anduin, you could have a kind of Psuedo-shire. In the Second Age there would still be hobbits, if farther east.

What's a burrahobbit got to do with my pocket, anyways?

Re: The Barrow-Downs MUSH

The Second Age would be very interesting. Mid-Second Age, I think, between the reign of of Tar-Antanamir and the attack on Eregion by Sauron.
The Shadow fell on Numenor then. Also we could have Tar-Minastir's navy to the aid of Gil-Galad, and the battles that took place in Eriador.

Re: The Barrow-Downs MUSH

errr, how can we roleplay thousands of numenoreans landing in lindon, or RP great battles in eriador?
I would much rather prefer the days around the beginning of the shire, with gondor at its full power, arnor slowly decaying, and sauron not winning, but not defeated either.

(used to be Quam, but thought of a nicer, more Tolkien, name)

I think either the third or mid second age could be considered, but I must admit to not understanding at all what you are talking about.

Did I miss something in the last month I have not been in the Downs? My work has been very busy and I had problems with my new computer. Now settled: By the way Pentium 3 733, 128 RAM, 30 Gb, DVD ROM. DAMN computers are so cheap in Singapore where I am staying currently. I love it.

Ron, could you give a little more explanation as to what you want to do, please...

Re: The Barrow-Downs MUSH

I think the years of Gondor's reigning would be the best. We have hobbits, men, elves, dwarves, people from strange lands, trees...what more does one need? I think the end of the 3rd age is a good choice, but it is so done already. Something everyone is not so familiar with would be of more interest.

Re: The Barrow-Downs MUSH

Let's see if I can explain this whole MUSH thing a little better.

Think of the MUSH as one of the old text-based adventure games like ZORK (wow! how old is the Wight!!??). You enter the MUSH over the internet and start by creating a character - choose a name, gender, species, and then describe your character in detail. You then enter the world at The Forsaken Inn along the East Road (this is the current starting place). You'll find yourself in the Common Room.

Remember, this is all described to you in text. No pictures - just words. While in the Common Room you'll see exits to the Kitchen, a hallway, the Courtyard outside and stairs leading up to the Guestrooms. Now you have to make a choice. Which way to go? Eventually, when the whole MUSH is made, you should be able to travel all the way from the Grey Havens to the Lonely Mountain (and wherever else you want to go)!

Along the way you'll run into other players. You'll be able to chat or maybe try some role-playing. Perhaps you'll notice an area of Middle-Earth that has not been yet developed. You can petition to 'build' it yourself. Building is great fun, but also a great challenge.

So, hopefully this gives you a better idea what a MUSH is and what you can do in it. Is it going to be incredibly exciting? Nope. Interesting? Yup. Addictive? It is for me (and a few others). Especially if you get to build.

Our first challenge is to decide which time in Middle-Earth do we want to roam in?

The MUSH is great fun and worth a look, Downers! I've been there! I highly recommend you make your way to Rivendell.

Wight or réd, could you post the TCP/IP address and Port Number here? I neglected to "save world" after my first trip there (good thing Gandalf and Frodo didn't!).

Having never MUSH-ed before, I vote for T.A. contemporary with LOTR as a time frame.

Re: The Barrow-Downs MUSH

Yes, I would encourage others to visit the MUSH, but maybe a little later, for there is hardly anything to see!! Rivendell is indeed marvelous and The old havens were great but otherwise there is nothing to be compared to it just yet... it might be confusing to people who have never done MUSH before.. but of course that is not my decision to make and so forth.. slow but steady right? Hmmm I am leaning more towards the third age... (seeing as how I still need to read more Silmaril) I think it should be set in a time frame where nothing major is going on yet.. like the above suggestions with Gondor in all its glory, and Sauron staying put... that would make it easier and more fun if I do say... Oh well only a thought... Yes Goodbye!!

Sorry if my recommendation was premature, Sud et al. Rivendell certainly seemed fit to entertain visitors, but it was pretty much the only place I've been to. In fact, I'd like to pop in again!

réd!!!!!!!!! Please post TCP/IP Address and Port! I long for another visit to the kitchen! Or just e-mail me if it's too early to be posting a general invitation to visitors. Or don't if what I got was only a sneak preview of fun to come... Or........

A good year??

After discussions here and in the chat room I think we've come up with a good year for the MUSH.

Third Age 1853

In this year:
* The Shire was more than 250 years old....and Bree was older...
* Narmacil II was King in Gondor and Minas Tirith was still Minas Anor (But no tower in the citadel yet)....
* The Witch-king was harassing the North and Sauron was in Dol Guldur....and Greenwood was already Mirky
* The Wainriders were encroaching from the East....
* The Eothed lived in the Vales of Anduin....
* The Lonely Mountain was unoccupied but Moria was still full of Dwarves....
* Elves lived in Rivendell and Lothlorien ... and were still sailing from Dol Amroth....
* Arthedain was in its last century of struggle....Rhudaur was controlled by Hill-men and Cardolan was already destroyed (and the Barrows haunted)....

A world of danger and excitement!

Who likes this timeframe? I do!

I think,Ron you picked an excellent time although I would have suggested 4th age-early. Virtually no work has been done there-and the Barrow-downs could figure prominently.

Minas Anor - 1853 T.A.

After more discussions we've decided on T.A. 1853 and Minas Anor. We will work on the city, and once it is somewhat complete open it up to the public. When the city is closer to completion, then we'll start moving outward across the Pelennor and eventually beyond the borders of Gondor, encompassing the entire world of Middle-Earth in the end. But every journey has a first step.

Re: The Barrow-Downs MUSH

Interesting idea, but shouldn't the actual Barrow-Downs be the major part of it?

What does MUSH actually stand for?

Will there be any graphics?

Re: The Barrow-Downs MUSH

A MUSH(or MUD) is a text-based multiplayer 'adventure'. There are no graphics at all, and the screen output looks a bit like Zork, if you know that golden oldie, still the best pc adventure IMNSHO. There are many different types, the two main sorts being the hack-n-slash-like MUDS, where you can gain levels and that are primarily based on fighting and competition, and MUSHes, that are primarily based on socialising and roleplaying. What the BW(and others) is building is a MUSH.

(used to be Quam, but thought of a nicer, more Tolkien, name)

To reply to bmilder.
A MUSH consisting mostly of the Barrow-Downs would be missing so much of Middle-Earth. I'd like the MUSH to encompass EVERYWHERE! Pretty grand idea, eh?

Sounds good BW!

One things buggin me though,Mr U said that he's been in the MUSH and it sounded really good to me,but when I came in today I did'nt notice anything different in the NEW section so where might we-those who have'nt seen anything new-find this totally incredible sounding MUSH?I was going to say that we could've had it right after the war of the Ring, you know while the Shire was in it's really good year and Aragorn was a new king or slightly after the war you know after Froo had left and things had gotten settled down and all that, but it looks like I was a little late Oh well,I'm sure that the MUSH will be a great sucsess and I'm lookin foward to it.

If you'll notice, the date on the post just above yours is almost 6 months old. Something from that long ago would not be new.

While digging through old threads to review projects I am involved with, I found this thread.

The wicked Wight ensnared me, luring me into his MUSH where I spent many hours building this and that with these and those!

The time of the MUSH has moved up to about 3 years after Bilbo went There and Back Again.

Enchanting Rivendell is still hidden out there, and unfinished Minas Anor is there as well as a few other constructions.

We have built rugged Dale, laying out its streets and completing it's larger Keeps. There are a few buildings and roads and plenty of land for houses and crops. There is a fine tavern THE DRAGON'S PERCH, and a few other places besides. If you're in good shape, you can climb the battlements of King Bard's Keep. Try not to get yourself thrown in his dungeon.

You can take a boat down the River Running to the Long Lake all the way down past Lake Town's settlement, reconstruction, and the old ruins of Esgaroth down to the Forest River.

There are already several interesting things to see and do, but there is much more work to be done before the BARROW DOWNS MUSH is ready to entertain.

CURRENTLY UNDER DEVELOPMENT:

Erebor, the Kindom Under The Mountain, is being designed. So is the Woodland Realm of Thranduil.

An exhaustive geographical study of THE ATLAS OF MIDDLE-EARTH has produced a precisely scaled electronic spreadsheet grid map of every major road, river and shoreline of traditional Middle-earth. Now, as we build and connect the settlements, we know exactly how far and in what direction everything is!

BW has essentially completed a weather and time system for the entire continent. Time passes and the weather changes. We actually transposed Middle-earth and its geographic distances to our own globe to ensure accurate sunrise and sunset, etc. There are zones of weather conditions that change with your latitude and altitude! Great ambience! It makes a real difference when the snow falls...

We have been working on water currents. If you get caught up a fast stream, you may wish you had a paddle!

In short, we hope that you will find travel in this MUSH to be as virtually real a Middle-earth experience as we can make it.

The idea right now is for it to be a simple and user-friendly MUSH, designed more for the pure delight of having it (and building it) as a setting for discussion or friendly play. I've been disappointed with the rigid and hideously complex gaming rituals suffered elsewhere. I have found some other MUSHes to be difficult in the extreme, with many hoops to jump through, and some less than friendly folk running the place! We're hoping for something that is easy and enjoyable for the visitor. Something just for fun, but as true as possible to Tolkien's work. So far, even at this stage in the experimental phase, we think it has proven to be so.

Of course, long term hobby projects like this take a lot of time to develop, but this is the kind of thing we hope eventually to accomplish. At some point, we will turn a corner in the project and say, "It is complete enough! Let's put it out there and keep perfecting it!"

The wicked Wight's scheme to ensnare you in will succeed yet! You, too, will fall to the evil lure of his designs!

Muah ha ha ha hah!

Right now, the MUSH is off line while other projects are in development. We hope to return to work on it as soon as may be.

If you would like to be a part of the MUSH development team, seek an interview with the Barrow-Wight!

I must say, if you get a chance, DO visit Rivendell. It is quite exquisite. Masterfully laid out and described. A true Elven haven.

Re: MUSH

You will need a terminal program (MUSHclient is the one that I use) that will enable you to communicate with the MUSH. With it, you will use the server information that the Barrow-Wight will give the developers/visitors.

MUSHclient is produced by: http://www.gammon.com.auGammon Software Solutions. It is free.

You can also use it to reach other MUSH servers that are running games.

I'm no computer expert myself, and it does take a little time to learn some of the commands for moving around and doing things. But it is a lot of fun! When it is up (it isn't right now) there are usually a couple of people around who can help.

Building roads and bridges and castles and hobbit holes and rooms and mountains and waterfalls (etc.) takes work and knowledge of a few basic commands which do not require a rocket scientist to master. Building a weather system almost does, but we have BW for that! Building your own house, or ruined tower, etc. is somewhat easier.

For those really interested in building, the PENNMUSH program (free) can run on your own computer (without even getting on the internet) and then you use MUSHclient to access it. You can practice building your own little text world with it offline.
