Hmm...

"... travel such a thing..." implies either a structure that can be passed over, such as a bridge or a hill, or some kind of method of travel... a boat, a horse? (Of course, you can't really "make a horse"... well, okay, if you're one of the Valar that's different...)

Re: A new quote that might have been uttered ....

The quote sounds to me like Sam, when first crossing the Nimrodel upon slender elvish ropes, a trick tht not even his uncle Andy would've pulled. Rope-making had been in the Gamgee clan for generations: c.f. Hob Gammidge, Hobson Gamgee, Andwise Roper. Remember Sam's anxiety not to leave Lorien without some rope, as well as his anxiety not to leave the length behind by which they'd descended that height in the Emyn Muil, etc.

Yes! galpsi! You have got it!

The quote was indeed Sam remembering his uncle Andy and his rope tricks and rope-walks (he had one up in Tighfield).

Yet another quote that might have been uttered ..

Who might have said ...

Quote:
Ah! There he comes atop his steed, leading the fray. I shall strike for the South! Fairer fields than this await me.

... and what were the circumstances of it?

Re: Yet another quote that might have been uttered ..

Spake the black serpent, perhaps, or one of his southron kin as they watched Theoden King -- in the van -- leading the Rohirrim on the Pelennor. If it was the black serpent, he was wholly mistaken. Or do his closing lines suggest a willigness to die in battle, sacrificing himself to slay the white horse?

Re: Yet another quote that might have been uttered ..

You are correct. Thus spoke (possibly) the black serpent.

As for the 'fairer fields' line, it was said by him merely as a mention of the grisly field he was currently on and the fairer fields of home that he would like to return to. But perhaps it had the secondary (and maybe foresighted) meaning of the 'fairer fields' of the after life. I don't know.

I actually used the 'field' line as a clue to indicate the Pelennor Fields. Was this too easy? Did I give too much information to make it challenging?

Re: Yet another quote that might have been uttered ..

The "fields" was just vaguely specific enough to make it harder for me, though your explanation makes good sense. Here's a stab; who might have uttered (a little bit melodramatically),
* * * *
* * * * "Faithless craft that draws me beyond fallen Westernesse
* * * * you will carry me no further from Ered Nimrais
* * * * nor will I tarry me longer beyond the Belfalas.
* * * * To shining foam I marry me and lay down there my white breast."

or some such lines?
* * * *

Nimrodel?
Who did not want to linger in peaceless ME any longer, and went to a haven at Belfalas?
But it was Amroth drowned in the Sea, so he could haver said to lay his head to rest in the foam of Belegaer as well...
Myabe I´m far from it, though.

No, you're not far off, but perhaps you should decide whether the quote has any internal logic and thereby pick one of the three.

Re: who's it?

I never doubted the logic of your quote, but it is cryptic, and I was not certain. But I think it really was Amroth, for the reason above, and because he was not able to wait for Nimrodel any longer, therefore the expression of leaving.

Alright then, here goes another one:

"My dear Lady, a friend in battle you have been in our darkest hour. Now I, whom they already call the happy and the lucky one, am truly glad to see you laugh again after the Shadow has passed."

Which LotR charecter might have said this, and whom did he speak to? And does anyone recognize my very clever clues?

Re: your answer

The obvious answer would seem to be Faramir, but I understand the words happy and lucky to suggest Kalimac Brandagamba. He'd be speaking, of course to Eowyn.

Re: your answer

I don't understand how the clues work, but I suppose that Aragorn is the most likely remaining candidate. I've forgotten, if I ever knew, what Aragorn means. Dunedain does't seem apt, nor Elessar, nor Telcontar, nor Envinyatur, nor Estel. Have I forgotten some variant name that signifies happy/lucky? Or am I drifting farther?

Re: your answer

Somehow, yes, don´t drift away into the complex, stay with the easy, it wasn´t Aragorn. And the "lucky-happy" clue is not directly mentioned in the book.
btw it would be strange if the speaker called Èowyn "Lady", but otherwise it wouldn´t have been a challenge.

Re: your answer

The person least likely to have called Eowyn "Lady" would be Eomer, and I suppose he could be called lucky because of his indirect ascent to the throne and at least as hapy as the next guy in a very happy time. Of course, by this point, I've listed practically everyone Eowyn comes into prominent contact with at this stage of the story -- so if it isn't Eomer, I'm gonna drop it and feign dignity.

Re: your answer

Yes, it was Èomer.
My thoughts behind this were: He calls her Lady instead of sister to make it harder; he calls her a friend in battle - Gùthwine, the name of Èomer´s sword means exactly this in old English; he was later to be known as Èomer Èadig, which is old English for either the lucky one or the happy one (depends on the translation from German "der Glückliche" and the rest is obvious.

Bully tough clues, Sharku. Gluckliche indeed.

How about this dubious (and posthumous) one:

Who, what, where, when, etc.?

The most significant clue is that the speaker would think it disgraceful to be buried under grass, but the fact that he was killed by an arrow" is also relevant.

Was is Grishnakh? The Orc that tried to kidnap Merry and Pippen for the ring. He has shot by one of the Riders of Rohan. I don't know what an orcs beef against grass would be, though. Maybe they just couldn't stand to see anything alive?

Re: your answer

This is a reasonable guess, but the relationship to the clues is not as specific as it is in the correct answer. The statement that he "was killed by an arrow," should have been in quotes in the clue because it is a quote. (I missed the open quote mark. Sorry )

Re: your answer

Was it the dwarf of Balin`s party who was buried under the grass at Mirrormere? I think his name was Floi, though I could be wrong. As a dwarf, he would presumably have wished to be buried under stone.

Thank you, Taimar, and yes indeed! That's just what I presumed. Ask us!

Re: your answer

The speaker is male, but not Boromir. The fact that he is "avowed" is significant.

Re: your answer

One of Finarfin´s sons (e.g. Aegnor) to their father, when Finarfin turned on the way to Middle-Earth and stayed in Aman, while his sons went with Féanor?
