Re: Question about Sam Gamgee...

Sorry, I didn't see this question the first time you placed it..

The Men of the north called Bombadill Orald, which means very old. Coincidentally, the German word uralt means the same thing

Re: Question about Sam Gamgee...

Correct. It pobably wasn't a coincidence, IMHO.

Re: Question about Sam Gamgee...

Tolkien translated the Red Book from Westron, the Common Speech of northwestern Middle-Earth, into English, often using Old English words or old words from other languages to represent the names of places and people. Though the Westron word Orald and the German word uralt are similar and have the same meaning, the two languages they came from are in no way related and neither was derived from the other. So the similarity must be coincidence.

New Question!

Oh! It's my turn to ask!

Name three places where a hobbit could get a pint of ale in the Shire.

Re: New Question!

Who is the Gaffer's next-door neighbor? Since this seems very hard I'll give a hint straight off, it says in the Long Expected Party.

Re: New Question!

There were three families on Bagshot Row: The Gamgees, Daddy Twofoot and some other I never could figure out.

Re: New Question!

I would just like to add that Tolkien did know German and had German heritage so he proberbly just adjusted the word slightly but that is proberbly where he got the idea from

Re: New Question!

Prof. Tolkien might very well have gotten the idea for the word Orald from the similar German word. But part of the magic of Middle-Earth is that it is not supposed to be made up. It is supposed to be a translation of actual events that happened in ages past. Suspend your disbelief as the author wanted, forget the modern world, and enjoy the many wonderful 'coincidences' in the spirt they were written.

Re: New Question!

It is very nice to pretend. I do it a lot. It's fun. But in the end it is still made up, though it may have been made well. Anyway, your turn.

Re: New Question!

So as not to challenge anyone's ability to pretend too much, lets realize this thread is too long and close it. Hmmm... maybe I'll start a language thread to continue this conversation.
