A possible origin for hobbit holes and the One Ring?

This is a fascinating article - I had no idea that Tolkien had collaborated with the famous archaeologist Sir Mortimer Wheeler. I have two of the latter's books (London and the Vikings and London and the Saxons). I might have to make a reproduction of that spectacular ring someday:
