What would happen to Galadriel if Sauron triumphed?
According to Sauron's previous conduct with the previous ring bearers he had captured (the dwarf with the ring, and the Nazgul) would he enslave her?
Would he kill her? Or just plain torture? Possibly take her and make her a companion? A reader of the future, using her mirror? In anyway, I think it would be a terrible and tragic destiny. The taller the loser, the harder the fall...

I think "what if this or that happened" threads should go into the Novices forum.
1)Galadriel and Elrond would remove their rings 2)They would have left for Aman with their kin

I agree they would take off their rings...
But they would not be able to escape. Why? Because Dol Guldur then would triumph over Caras Galadon without the aid of Nenya to Galadriel's power. She would become a captive in the pits of Dol Guldur. Elrond would have a better chance of escaping. But ors, wargs, etc. are faster than him...

The forces of Dol Guldor were held off by more than the power of Nenya, there also were the soldiers led by Celeborn. Sauron regaining the ring would have had little effect immediately as he didn't have any of the Nazgul there, being the only ones of his servents that would have had an increase in their power. I think they could have held off the forces of Dol Guldor enough to be able to retreat safely and leave ME.

Celebrimbor knew the elven rings were 'virused' once Sauron completed the 'spell' of the master ring. So it is likely that Galadriel would also have sensed Sauron regaining the ring.
She would then have probably A> taken the fastest horse to the Havens with those who wanted to go or B> If it was a large group - headed to the Havenjs en masse' - As it was a distinct possiblility I would imagine the High Elves of Lorien had made contingency plans...

If Sauron had infected the Rings, would Galadriel, Elrond and Gandalf have been allowed to enter Valinor wearing their Rings? Or perhaps Sauron would have been able to control the wearers of the three Elven Rings?
Maybe the number of Ring Wraiths would have immediately jumped to 12. [ March 11, 2003: Message edited by: Birdland ] |

It is not clear to me that galadriel's RIng was an essential ingredient in repulsing any military power. The orcs from moria marched right on in...
THeir was no 'Girdle of melian' around Lothlorien. What there was, was the power of the Ring, concentrated on the Naith, and this 'stopped' or rather slowed down incredibly, the flow of time. Within this realm, Galadriel was able to perceive Sauron's mind and he not hers. this may have had something to do with the ring. Or it could very well have been a function of Galadriel's well-trained Osanwe in conjunction or not with her mirror. Birdland, the number most certainly would not have 'immediately jumped to three'. If it takes men many years to fade, the process certainly would not be faster for Elves, if they would succomb at all. In all of the Tales there is no Elf, that seems so twisted as to leave a ring on that he/she knows Sauron could control them by. They are extemely sensitive and naturally psychic. They would know that a Sauron controlled ring would be bad news. JRRT in several places, states that no Elf knowingly served the Darkness. maeglin comes closest, but even he was captured and threatened with torment and offered the object of his desire.

However the framing of the questions is certainly reminiscent of N&N...

Galadriel would have been demoted from Lady of the Wood to common concubine. Elrond would have become a variation on a mince-pie. Either that, or they would have been made to toil away in Sauron's dictatorial conglomerate entitled AOL/Time Warner.

"What if..." topics are being placed on the Novices and Newcomers forum, since they ask for opinions and speculation, not actual book discussion. Please continue reading and posting there. Thanks!
