Bored of the rings is the most dispickable, idiotic, stupid, Tolkien-hating thing I've ever heard of! I would NEVER even consider reading a book that makes fun of J.R.R. Tolkien's works. He would be ashamed of it, and so should every Tolkien fan.

Unless they have a sense of humor and enjoy parodies. Moving this to N&N since it's not an advanced discussion of Middle-earth.

I tried. But it was so incredibly stupid I had to give up... My mom bought(sp) it cause it is, I think, a collectors item. But you can't dismiss Freto and Legolam.....It has become a topic of discussion in my mothers house of late. This conversation usually leads to petting cats, and my mother, my step-dad, and myself laughing till tears. The topic comes up from talking about the Barrowdowns, and so fourth. The we end up talking about Hitchhikers Guide to the Universe, and the Galaxy and Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul(a funny book with Norse gods, frankly Thor is getting his father pretty angry, not to mention the may pop machines and refrigerators popping up everywhere) Anyway, This conversation dwindles down and we all go do what we were planning to do in the first place, with my thought on now where is that stupid book, and why don't we have a copy of The Fellowship of the Ring that isn't falling apart, or missing half the pages. Then I think, gee I gotta go to the used bookstore when I get money , and then gee I need to support the Barrow Downs, a and so on and so forth until I get occupied with games or art, or a book, or sleep..... or the Barrow Downs.

There's nothing wrong with a LotR parody, and I think anyone who think it's an unforgivable insult against Tolkien is an idiot.
But Bored of the Rings is bad, can't call that humor really, and that's why I don't like it, not because it's a LotR parody..

I'm not exactly opposed to LOTR parodies, but I'd rather not read Bored of the Rings, I read the beginning and didn't really like it. It was just too stupid for my tastes. I mean, seriously, "Spam"? An insult to Samwise if I ever saw one. But then again, it is kind of humorous (spam, I mean).

I've never read it. I kinda want to, but my dad has hidden his copy away and I can't find it. From what he's told me, it's pretty...um....mature. o.O So I don't know if I'll ever read it or not.
A good parody, in my opinion is the Stupid Ring Parody. Very funny.

By the way, welcome to the Downs, Laura. If you haven't already found it, there is a thread here where you can introduce itself. Also, it's worth reading the FAQs at the top right of the page, and at the top of each forum. For example, as GaladrieloftheOlden has pointed out, there is already a thread on this topic, so it's worth doing a search before starting a new topic (I found out the hard way too ). Post well, and enjoy being one of the dead.

Bored of the Rings has its funny moments, but the references are very outdated (ie the whole Brer Rabbit routine). I liked the constant bickering between Legolam and Gimlet.

If we want to discuss this, why don't we move onto the other topic...?

I second that, Menelien.
Yes, Starbreeze has already begun a topic with the same concept and title. We should move there. Just a suggestion....

The name "Bored of the Rings" kind of turns me off because I could never (I don't think) get bored of the Rings. But if it's truly a funny parody as some here suggest, I may look into it! I would consider myself an ardent Tolkien fan, but I'm not afraid to laugh at and have fun with the characters!

Well the older links don't work. and I can't find any references but a few in the ripoffs thread. Has anyone of late read Board of the Rings? I know I found a copy of it and nearly fell to tears reading it to my friend on the bus. >.>

I've read it, twice. I first read it when I was 12 or so. I thought it was incredibly stupid. I reread it a few years ago, and I still thought it was incredibly stupid, mainly, but it also made me chuckle a couple of times. They were the most intelligent jokes that I missed on my first read that made me chuckle - at times Tolkien's style is parodised rather nastily and amusingly. But all in all, I think that even I would write a better parody of LotR given the time and the patience required.

I think I remember the earlier thread, but the link above didn't work.
The book itself is rather spotty: funny in some places, dumb in others. Much of the humour is notably dated, with 1960's references abounding. That said, I would recommend it as being at least worth a look to the Tolkien fan. The Council of Elrond parody is to me one of the best parts. Quote:
