Since this seems to be a go...

An aid to the project may be found online in text that is already available.

It would aid the cut and paste approach for omitted\re-inserted text.

In alt.binaries.e-book there is currently posted the materials you need, however it does not contain History, but it should save on alot of typing and OCR work.

AFAIK it is not proofed, but then I didn't post it either.

Just dwnld winRAR to access it.

Mentioning this is probably a no-no, but in the interests of the project I see no need to not take advantage of available materials already present.

Still; NOTHING replaces the good ol' fashioned Tree-version.

Re: A quick note for the project

I was wondering if you had a scanner or were an unemployed speed typer .

Now the truth comes out . [or at least some of it !]

If Ron [happy new year if you are monitoring your wonderful corner of the Silm universe!] has concerns he could prob delete this thread once all have a chance to download it, I just commited it to a tree based form myself .

Re: A quick note for the project

LOL!
No; the stuff I've been sending to you both lately is stuff I've done long before this. The items on alt. are not put there by me, or have as yet been utilized by me as there isn't much need since I've already accomplished most of the project on my own.

I've been working on this privately for over a year now.

I mentioned it in passing so it could be utilized by others who are interested, but aren't 'speed typers' or have a scanner.

I've been sidetracked with the reassembling of the LOTR appendices using material taken from History Vol. 12

Now isn't that an interesting thought?

LOL!

Re: A quick note for the project

yes we had better talk to ron about setting up a seperate Hobbit/lotr canon section right away!
there are atleast 543 instances of orc not being changed to ork yet , and that is just the tip o' the 'berg.

p.s. I think I wuld like to have a private chat w/ you about scanners [it of course has only a little to do w/ this project].

I have read a bit of XII's appendix material esp . aragorn and arwen. I was disappointed that there was no more to be seen re: arnor but maybe I missed it as my reading of it was less than sytematic.

LOL!
I chose not to alter LOTR text in that fashion. Only Sil text, giving it the archaic style it deserves.
Additional details such as birth years, years of reign, and other such omitted details done for compression are being returned to the state they would have had if not for limitations pressed upon the good Prof.

Oh? I can probably take a stab at one of the questions and answer it now: free OCR tools are few and far between that do not have a limit on the number of uses.

I have one that I picked up, and is no longer available, that is free and unlimited. If this is one of your questions, I can send it to you as it also remains in backup zipped form on a disc somewhere. This is of course only a guess as to one of the questions.

Please feel free to contact me.

I'm not following...

Are you referring to winRAR?
If so: http://www.rarsoft.com/www.rarsoft.com/

If this isn't the request, could you specify?

alt.binaries.e-book

Maybe I have misunderstood.

I understood you to say that the address below:
alt.binaries.e-book
contained 77 and ut that was downloadable?
I tried a search , and finally got a non-active newsgroup.
I am no ace at this stuff so, any further illumination would help.

Re: alt.binaries.e-book

Yes. alt.binaries.e-book is indeed a Newsgroup.

If you are having problems, I can e-mail the selected item as an attachment, but you will still need the winRAR to unpack it (a DAMN fine tool anyway!).

If you decide to stay with the Newsgroup (far easier I think); you will need some newsreader that has the ability to combine and decode binaries. Outlook, Outlook express, Forte Free Agent or other readers will do the trick.

Yes; it contains 77, UT, LOTR (non-appendiced), HOB, and AOTB and mentioned because it seemed a good starting point for the project and the NG is far from non-active.

If you have no premium news-server, several free ones can be found on the net. Deja will not be of assistance here.

Hope that helps. If not, please contact me privately at:
saulotus@yahoo.com (yes I will check it more frequently ).

Re: alt.binaries.e-book

Good man!

So Mr. Kittle; will you be joining the editorial endeavor?

BTW: does anyone have any suggestions for a centralized and exclusive site or other such framework that can host completed sections or sections in progress for the members who are working on the project? I assume that if such a site required a logon password or other such method of restricting general public access, then the need to worry over dispersal of material could be averted.

This is just one suggestion for an avoidance of the e-mail flood or other methods of transferrance that would make it more difficult. I'm wondering if something on One-list\E-groups might not suffice as the membership could be regulated.

Suggestions?

support can beautiful

Ron [and S.] thanks , I will try and download the suggested software [is it power mac friendly?] tonight I hope and go from there. Chances of it all being smooth are around 0% sio you will prob here from me.

I am egroup illeterate - although we will def. want aplace to place all of this that is not going to cause any legal schmeelage.

BW , even if you can't find the time [or wish ] for a full fledged role,I would be happy if you chime in as you see fit.
Of course until we get to some straight forward texts, and final polishing it will be alot of abbreviated technical mumbo jumbo , that would keep all but the craziest of us miles away.

lindil

p.s.
I can not tell you how much I appreciate you letting us proceed w/ this project out the merest whiff of a executive heavy-hand. If this ever reaches the GTIC consensus level we would like . You giving us a free hand will give the effort more legitamacy, than if it came from a source w/ already crystallized opinion.

three cheers

L.
