Well, perhaps something can be said. It is a fey, taken from a Gothic Gardening site which no longer exists. Fey characters are thought to be whimsical and strange, otherworldly, belonging to the realms of fairies and elves and marked by a spell of apprehension of death. Subtly Tolkienish methought. In retrospect, sadly "applicable."

And yours I like a great much as well, a starkly stylised sun. But I could be wrong. What can you tell us of it?

Nuruamiel's is sweet and loving; Piosenniel's I have always liked; Squatter's is inscrutable; Mithadan could use one, as could Mr. Underhill and davem and Marilofthelongname. Ulmo's and Barrow Wight's and OneWhiteTree's's are unique, while HerenIstarion's balances a restraint with exhuberance, a nice reflection of him, I think. Manôphazân's manages to be funny, to me at least. Guinevere's compliments her nickname very well. Alaklondewen's is, I think, very subtle. To me, littlemanpoet's is wonderfully medieval. Durelin's I like for its style. I have a soft spot for dwarven avatars, like Kuruharan's and Regin Hardhammer's. Maikadilwen's has always made me giggle and dance inside. As for The PerkyEnt's, well, there's something wholly appropriate about it. burrahobbit's sun I like and Rimbaud's Peter Pan is too apt for words. Himaran has a bright aspect I like while Carrűn's always brings a smile to my face. Lush's rose is lovely to my mind and Kransha's eye is a hoot. I liked Diamond18's old one a bit better than her new one.

Oh, I could go on and on! There are so many intriguing avatars here.

SaucepanMan's has been too highly praised to need mine. And, as for Estelyn's, well, my entire viewing of Shrek2 was influenced by my constant memories of her red-haired, green-eyed heroines. I kid you not. I kept seeing REB2 as I watched the credits rather than Shrek2.

Your Avatar was originally a sketch by Brian Froud, from his book Faeries... The website you got it from took his sketch of a springgan and made it into a "negative" photo... Sorry if i sound rude, i don't imply to. I just grew up with Brian Froud's works... Sad thing is i know all of his books by heart and can name them by year... Yes, its one of the strange services i provide here.

Vuelve's "Puss in Boots" avatar freaking rules.

And Bethberry's rules, because it's a bit freaky.

I've always liked Firefoot's avatar, and the Barrow-wight's new one is cool... I like it better because, unlike the last one, I can tell what it is. (I still think his last one looked liked the Hulk's fist...)

I also liked Imladris's old avatar (the orangey picture one, of the valley), but her new one is cool too.

Sirithheruwen's avatar. I definitely think its the most striking one. It terrifies me, yet delights me in a small way too. I'd give it a vote for all round most amazing avatar, but I'm still scared of it.

Anyway... I like Sirithheruwen's avvy. I couldn't place it for a while until I saw her on Teen Titans. I, like Aylwen, had to stop myself from yelling:"Look, it's Sirithheruwen!"
In that case, I think I'll keep it!

Thank you for posting the original source of the avatar from Gothic Gardening. Froud's work is lovely indeed and wonderful for making available all the lovely and unlovely creatures of old mythology. Why, The White Horse Inn in Rohan was visited by a spriggan only last summer, in the guise of one Madi Codex...

There is one drawing by Froud which I have toyed with from time to time in thought of using-- not this one, however. For my purposes the Froud original which you refer to from Fairies would not work and I would not use nor want it. It is the Gothic Gardening version which I wished to use.

Why? Because my 'character' Bethberry originated as the daughter of Tom Bombadil and Goldberry, sent to wander Middle earth in search of her lost mother--a bit of a twist on the Persephone myth which Tolkien loosely incorporates in his characterisation of Goldberry. My character was inspired in part by the lack of any reference to Goldberry at the book's conclusion, where Gandalf refers only to going back to see old Tom.

You see, the 'negative' photo which you refer to is very similar to the cover illustrations done by Sarah Gibb for Tales from the Perilous Realm. This book includes "The Adventures of Tom Bombadil." There is a fanciful one of Goldberry dancing above the rushes and cattails of the water where she first entranced Tom.

The "Bęth" part of my nick comes from the Sindarin for 'word', taken from Gandalf's spell before the Moria gate. As such, it is a nod to the web of words which my 'character' delights in, both in the RPGs and in the discussions.

Which all goes to show the inordinate amount of time I spend dallying with ideas and references as I ply subtly layer upon layer of nuance to my character here. Surely, surely you will say I have better things to do and you would not be wrong ...

Now that I have more time...

Lush's rose is very pretty, as is Bethberry's springgan. Very magical. Also on the list of my favourites is Squatter of Amon Rudh for his Shakespeare, The Perky Ent, Diamond18, Amanaduial, and Eowyn Skywalker because every time I see a lightsaber-wielding Eowyn I giggle.

Naturally I love Imladris’s (and Vuelve’s) new avatar. Honestly, who couldn’t fall in love with the majestic Puss in Boots? His sweet charm, pride and those cute little eyes that one could never say no to!

I got my avatar from Furiae an amazing art website (defiantly worth visiting). A big thanks to Imladris who gave me the link.

Best wishes,

<-- 'tis me, sure

Hey, Bb, so did I . It was of fitting colour with the BD theme, and it was reminiscent of wizards too.

But 'twas four years old already, and I felt like a change. Besides, ubiquitous Fordim already started just another prolongued thread of the kind he's the master-starter of, dealing with 'how do you imagine other members' issue. I would rather make clear how do I look like, than suffer (probable) insinuations as of me being like cabbage or something

Photoshop expert re: not quite, more of 'annoying amateur' sort (that is, when I feel like 'photoshopping', I almost always call my expert friend now and again and nag him with 'um, and how do you do...' sort of questions.

When the process of nagging reaches its critical mass, and he finally refuses to answer my questions, than I will be forced to actually read the manual

Honest, HI, I never thought of you as holubtsi. Never. Sometimes maybe like nalysnyky, but more often like shashlik, if you aren't vegetarian.

well, 'holubtsi' I know of, and call the dish like to it 'tolma' (the difference being, we do not roll the meat into cabbage leaves, but vine leaves down here), shashlik I do love (but under the name of 'mtsvadi' it goes), but what nalys-s-ssnyky-ss, my precious-ss, what nalys-s-ssnyky-ss?

Just noticed that. I'm even more flattered than before, I am. That may well be the case

Come to think of it, change is good, but tradition is also good. I'll try to merge them into one. (Or, my photoshop expert friend, be afraid, be very afraid, as a wagonful of nagging is due to come your way really soon...)
