Sting Haldir's Death

I'm really confused. I have only read LOTR twice but I don't seem to recall Haldir dying at Helm's Deep. But one of my friends says that he does remember that part. Is my friend full of crap or am I just missing it? If Haldir doesn't die at Helm's Deep then where does he, if he does?

The elves were not at Helm's Deep in the book. There is a Haldir thread already.

hiro e ab wanath
it wasn't suppose to happen. but JRR tolkien's Haldir goes to Valinor....Peter Jackson's haldir goes to the Halls of Mandos.
craig should get recognition for dying like that. it made half of the people watching in the cinema jump off their chairs and go "Noo!!! why HIM?"

peace

His death was the most predictable thing in the whole movie. The second you saw him you knew he was going to die. Atleast I knew...

They had no right to kill Haldir, even if he was a snob.
Dont you thing "Haldirs Death" sounds like a cocktail, or karate move or something?

I think P.J. put in Haldir's death in order to emphasize Arwen's choice. Aragorn agonized and even tried to discourage her from giving up her immortality. Elrond and Arwen had that emotional confrontation in which he spelled out her fate as a mortal. I think the death of an elf punctuated that point.
I also think Haldir's death was included to remind everyone of that many elves had made this sacrifice in order to battle Sauron.

I know it caught me by surprise. I thought to myself that it wasn't right so I went and investigated it. And Haldir didn't die at Hems Deep.

I researched it too and Haldir was only in TFOTR that's it. And yes the elves never showed up at Helm's Deep in TTT. And I have to admit, I was one of the people in the crowd thinking, "No! Why him?"
[ January 07, 2003: Message edited by: elf_Legolas ]

Thanks for researching it, because I asked at the Craig thread and no one answered me *sob* Does anyone know where Haldir was when Helm's Deep was going on?
Also, is there any mention of Haldir after FotR? If there is a definite reference to his life after LotR (being alive, that is), then PJ had no right to take him out.
[ January 07, 2003: Message edited by: Nieninque ]

poor haldir.
If he hadn't died, all my friends would've still believed that elves only die from heartbreak...and even when they are stabbed a trillion times they would still go to Elrond and heal and live forever.
peace

I'll answer it.
I looked into the index of ROTK and all the references were to FOTR. I then went online. Here's what I've found: http://www.theonering.net/movie/char/haldir.html

I also could tell he would die - Something about him. In every movie, SOMeone has to die (I don't think so, but most producers do), and as in Lotr few main characters really do die, I think they felt he was the only one wih enough screen time and little enough book time to "fit the bill" for the tragic hero death seen.
But man, I hated it when he got killed. I didn't exactly jump out of my seat, but I was just as stunned as anyone else. "Frodo's character being messed up" be darned. This was PJ's worst mistake -
Hey, does anyone get the Idead that maybe possiby plrobably Haldir is one of my favorite characters? Naa....
It makes me sick - Himaran

It was really shocking when he died. I cried! I don't think they should have killed him. It was mean.
