Hi Drew
The Awnser is correct... according to the Silmarillion!
JRRT changed his opinion on the parentage of Gil-Galad - in fact many times. For a more clear awnser you should read the exelent post/article by Tar Elenion entitled "The Parentage of Orodreth and Gil-galad: A History" in the SILM Canon forum.

From which you will see that it is very difficult to awnser your question according to the HoME - and JRRT later opinions on this matter which is not totally clear, at least to me ...

Cheers Telchar

Who was High King of the Eldar in Tirion?

KIDDING !!!!! (To get this joke you have to read the thread "Aragorn's Ancestors" on page 4 of THE BOOKS)

I'll think of a proper Silm question shortly.

According to SILM:
To start with Ingwe of the Vanyar - Then Finwë before the banishment of Feanor, then Fingolfin, second son of Finwë - For a short while after the Sack of Formenos it would be Feanor and after the Rebellion of the Noldor Finwes third son Finarfin, which I suspect is who you're looking fore. Only I dont know who would be high king in the period between the leaving of the nordor and the return of Finarfin some years later...

NO NO NO that was a joke, you didn't read my whole post ! A related question about the kingship sparked a large brouhaha over this question (I gave the cite), of which the "Gil-galad Who's Your Daddy?" question reminded me. I'll come up with a real question within a day.

You're asking for it, Telchar. If Michael Martinez or Tar Elenion are out there, they will give you 42 reasons (with citations) why you are completely wrong -- and would remain so even if you reversed your answer. Did you read that "Aragorn's Ancestors" thread?

This is a Published Silmarillion Quiz-thread and all my awnsers hold thight, according to the Published Silmarillion!!!

I am very much aware that they (my awnsers) are not in accord with Tolkiens later opinion on the Subject. That is why I found it amusing to awnser the way I did...

Cheers Telchar - and thanks for the fun..

Yeah you're right -- it's a jurisdictional issue -- this is SILM-land and we don't need no string cites from History of Middle Earth. OK I'm working on a Silm question . . .

Hello all. I've been waiting for like a week to chime in on this thread. With apologies to the moderator (hopefully this isn't too large of a breach of etiquette), I'd like to start a new question:

According to the Silmarillion (just so there is no confusion), who is Elrond's oldest living ascendent, and how many generations is he seperated from that person?

Bonus - Of all the people Elrond is descended from who is mentioned in the Silmarillion, which is the one he is seperated from by the most generations and how many?

- Maglor

The Bonus: Marach, first recorded chieftain of the third house of the edain!

Actually I didn't - the diagram of the house of Haleth (in my edition of SILM) doesn't contain the names of -Hathol-Magor-Aradan- (although they are included in the index) so I used The complete guide to Middle-Earth to fill in the gaps... hope it is OK

I wasn't sure if Indis lived - did she reamain in Aman - I guess so??? Anyway - here goes:

Actually, the fate of Indis is unknown. There is no reason to believe that she was slain with Finwe (all other elves having fled), and I'm sure it would have been mentioned if she went with the exiles. My guess is she either went back to Ingwe's house or stayed with Finarfin.

Eonwe

He screwed up big time by

1) Leaving lax security around the Silmarils,
2) Allowing Maehdros and Maglor to depart with the Silmarils unhindered
3) Not hauling Sauron back to Aman in chains when he had the chance

He also summoned all of the elves (or maybe just the Noldor?) to return with him to Aman.

Maglor is correct, though I don't doubt Telchar is right as well!

Maia

All of the Valar had 'families' of Maia associated with them. However, only eight (excluding Melkor) had Maia specifically named to them in the books. Which were these, and which were their Maia?

For purposes of this question, only count those mentioned in the main books (Hobbit, LOTR, Silmarillion, UT). Info in Sil supercedes info in UT.

- Maglor

By the way, I don't have the answers at the tip of my fingers, so I actually have to go look this up!

Just Without looking at the Books i thought i'd have a shot and see how many i could come up with...

Olorin - Manwe
Osse - Ulmo
Uinen? - Ulmo
Melian - Yavanna?
Sauron - Melkor (originally of Aule?)
Then there were the two who became the sun and the moon but i have forgotten who they were...

Well i think i stuffed that up a bit... better go study for the answer

I have another guess

Eönwe to Manwe
Osse - Ulmo
Uinen - Ulmo
Salmar - Ulmo
Sauron - Melkor (originally of Aule!)
Saruman to Aule
Ilmarë to Varda
Melian - Yavanna?
Rdagast - Yavanna
Alatar to Oromë
Pallando to Oromë
Olorin - Irmo/Lorien - although he was sendt to ME at the bidding of Manwe and Varda, but he also spend much time with Nienna

Thats 12 Maiar connected to 8 different Valar - I cant come up with more

hmmm... I had to look up the spelling of Ilmarë up I couldn't remember if it were Ilmarë or Ilmarien - And I had just made a reply in the istari in the book forum so the Maiar of Heren Istarion were fresh in my mind,
