For how many different mounts can you account ridden by the nine members of the fellowship of the ring?

Re: Steeds

The 4 hobbit ponies they brought into the old forest. Frodo on Glorfindel's horse. Shadowfax. The horse that Boromir took from Rohan to Rivendell. The 2 horses that Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas took in Rohan. The horse that Merry rode on with Eowyn. Aragorn's horse from the North. whatever Pippin rode to the Black Gate. The 4 ponies, I assume, that were given the the hobbits for the return home. The 2 (maybe 3) horses and the pony that Gandalf rode in The Hobbit. Do eagles count?

Re: Steeds

I don't know if eagles count. Sure, why not. When I wrote this, I didn't have the comprehensive answer in mind. I just figured one of you smart readers would pick up the ball and run. But I'm sure that you still owe the question some steeds. I figured that the answer might have to be collective. And it might still have to be.

btw, the horses you've mentiond but not named were (in the order of your mention): Sharp-ears, Wise-nose, Swish-tail, Lumpkin, ???, Hasufel, Arod, Windfola, Roheryn, ???, (four more ???s), Shadowfax, (???), and Smaug-morsel. Can you (or anyone) i.d. any that I can't?

There are still two GLARING omissions (at least) among the steeds, quite aside from filling in names.

During composition and at readings to the inklings, it was called, "the New Hobbit." Raynor Unwin selected the current title. I always thought that JrrT referred to it as: part of the Lord of the Rings.

JRRT wanted to title The Return of the King Bill??? Common, quam. You can guess better than that

nooooooooo

The first question of this thread asked about "for how many mounts you can ac@#%$ ridden by the nine members of the fellowship of the ring", and a couple of replies later galpsi says that there are still two GLARING omissions, and one of them is Bill,Sam's pony of course.

Re: nooooooooo

I think I should put an end to this. JRR did not like the title `The Return of the King` because he felt that it gave away something of the plot, which, unless you are as unobservant as Pippin, is a fair point. JRR wished to entitle the third volume `The War of the Ring`, which he felt was less revealing.

I take upon myself to award the honour of asking the next question to Quam, in recognition of his magnificently confusing answer `Bill`.

Look into the http://www.fortunecity.co.uk/library/classiccourt/77/Mirror of Desire.
