I love the quote that Mnemosyne has in her signature. It is one of the sweetest and saddest and most sacrificial in the entire book, I think.

Thanks! It's probably my favorite in the entire book (especially because it's just sort of tucked away in there; I never see it on any of the sites with rotating quotes), not least because it's so true--sometimes just knowing that there's a place that gave you happy memories is still out there is enough to sustain you through bad times. Which is why I'm still so ticked at the Ring for giving Frodo imagery-amnesia.

Speaking about that Leonard Cohen song and ugly people, it's quite graphic that song, isn't it? A bit too graphic perhaps.

Not so much for itself but as a reminder how funny and clever O'Rourke is. It is a while since I read anything of his but some quotes have stayed in the mind. My favourite is the one about Europe being so tiny that you can't swing a cat without putting it through customs.

Actually it works best if you just substitute "people" for "women"...after all, telling someone of either gender that you understand them is rather annoying, patronising and presumptious. Telling someone you love them is quite a different thing...

This sounds familiar to me, and I surmise many more of us may have felt something similar as newbies. I still don't rep that much, and for a while I've been giving mainly to people who haven't got that much rep amassed but seemed to deserve it; I'm slowly getting over that - after all, it seems stupid not to let somebody who posted something clever or funny know you liked it, never mind how many green boxes they already have.

But think of the times your day has been brightened by the realization that you made somebody else smile, and think of the times you've been gently corrected when you otherwise would have obliviously gone on with whatever you were doing.

Think of it as a conversation instead of a confrontation.
