Ring What happened to the hobbits?

I recently finished reading the LotR for the first time, and I was left rather confused. I was surprised to find the main character suddenly sail across to an unknown land, and never hear of him again. At this I felt a little sad. What happened to him? I'd prefer him stay in the Shire with Sam and his friends

And what about Sam and the others? What happens to them? Is there a sequal to LotR or anything else explaining this? And what of this land over the sea? What's Frodo doing over there?

.. I've asked about 20 questions in the one post Sorry!

Re: What happened to the hobbits?

Well, as far as a follow up to the LOTR, i'm afraid there is none. However, if you'll read the appendix at the end of The Return of the King, that will provide you with some information about what happens to the rest of the fellowship. And if you'd like to know where exactly Frodo went, well there are several books that deal with that in one way or another: Silmarilion, and the Histories of Middle-Earth (HOME). Start with the appendix though, that'll quickly answer some questions you have.

And welcome to the Downs!

Re: What happened to the hobbits?

First of all - dont be sorry for asking questions...
Secondly, follow mhorams advise...

If you cant bother...

What happened to him? -> He went over the Sea, to the undying lands, to find healing and rest from the hurts he had come by in Middle-earth

And what about Sam and the others? What happens to them? -> Sam, also went over the Sea in his own time, He was voted Mayor of the Shire some six or seven times. Merry and Pippin lived long and happy lives, and had great honor. When they got old and tired the took a last journey south and took leave with their respective lords, The King of Rohan and Gondor. They were laid to rest in Rath Dinen.

Is there a sequal to LotR or anything else explaining this? -> As Mhoram said. I will only add 'Unfinished Tales' by JRR Tolkien. Toilkien also started a sequal called The New Shadow, but it never got far, and was never finished.

And what of this land over the sea? What's Frodo doing over there? Erëssa, Aman, Valinor - The land of the Lords of the arda - The Valar. If you want to learn more about them you need to read The Silmarillion.

Welcome to the Downs

Re: What happened to the hobbits?

Okay, thanks for the info. I really didn't understand what Frodo was doing, but now I do! I might have a look at the other books you mentioned, though I'm sorry to say I'm not too good at reading history-type things, which I know Tolkien did a lot of. It doesn't really keep my interest.. I just love reading about the characters, the mystery and the beautiful lands..

and thanks for the welcome!

Re: What happened to the hobbits?

You'll find lots of interesting characters in the Silmarillion, including some from LotR such as Elrond, Galadriel, Glorfindel. It's worth the time taken, and you'll love it, that's why we are all here. :-)

Re: What happened to the hobbits?

Yes, the Silmarillion is a great book! Some people think it is boring, but I think it is well-thought, and exciting. You'll also hear of people where very little information is given about them in The Lord of the Rings. Like Beren and Luthien, and you'll hear more information on Gil-Galad, Cirdan, and the First Dark Lord: Morgoth!

Interesting...I never knew that bit about the sequel. Thanks for the trivia.

Re: re

I believe you can read the sequal (I don't think there's very much of it) in HOME XII.

Re: re

Sorry for not making myself very clear. HOME stands for History of Middle Earth, a series of books containing much of Tolkien's previously unpublished work. By 'HOME XII' I meant the 12th (and last) book in the series, which is entitled 'The Peoples of Middle Earth'.

I know exactly what you mean about wanting to know more about Sam and the rest. I can also reccomend HoME #9 - there is a small section describing Sam at home with his children, preparing for Aragorn and Arwen to visit.

I found the Sillmarillian better each time I read it.The fist time getting through the Music of the Ainur, gave me pause, and regrettably I put it off a few years. But once I 'tackled" it, I re read it over a few times.I still find new things in it, as each time it seems I am interested in different parts.

I have not read HOME.I didn't know it exsisted until recently. In our tiny town it is not in the library, so I'll have to wait and order it.

We have a fan fiction novel in progress (75% finished!) called THE HOBBITS on the Barrow-Downs website! You might want to read that!

In addition to Gilthalion's most excellent novella, the Hobbits, you might also want to check out Tales from Tol Eressea, a series of short stories, the first of which deals with what happened to Bilbo, Frodo and Sam in the West. BTW, Gilthalion has recently added a new chapter to The Hobbits. Rising to the challenge, I will add a new segment of Tales from Tol Eressea this week.

I agree wholeheartedly with what Luthein Tinuviel said. The first time I tried to read the Silmarillion I quit early on. But I knew it was important to understanding Middle Earth so I went back at it. I got through the early part by reading a few pages at a time and thinking about and digesting them. It worked. And there are some terrific stories later on. Absolutely a must for anyone who wishes to understand what Middle Earth is all about. Persevere!!!

I see Mith and Gil are not above shameless plugs. Both good reads, but they contain some information that could be misleading since some of it isn't necessarily TRUE.

Or, if you still don't like the ending to LotR, you're not alone. I just discovered this site that is convinced that sailing away was the wrong choice for Frodo and is determined to do everything in their power to bring him back, or to keep him from leaving in the first place:The Rescue Frodo! S.W.A.T. Team
I've always thought that the accepted ending is fine, but boy, they put up one heck of an eloquent argument! (Actually three or four, in different fan-fics.) It also brought up an interesting possibility in my mind: what if LotR isn't really true, but just...*reverb* BASED ON A TRUE STORY? *end reverb*

I hope I don't get struck by lightning for saying that...
