I promised I´d make one up, but this is all I achieved:
I call it "Quotes that weren´t", which means one gives a quote which is not in one of JRRT´s books, but could easily be there, e.g. in situations where direct speech was certainly there, but is not reported to us.
The point about making them up is that there is at least one clear hint on the speaker and the circumstances. The advantage of this game would be that a solution can only be found through logical thinking.
And, a hint should always be provided what book this quote would be in, either Silmarillion, or TLOTR (or The Hobbit).

To make clear what I mean, I´ll give some examples:

"I THOUGHT A ROSE WOULD FIT YOU WELL: I CARED MYSELF FOR ITS GROWTH; SO THAT IT WOULD ALMOST BE AS BEAUTIFUL AS YOU ARE..." (LOTR)

The problem here is the level of style, but otherwise, one can find out that it is Sam talking to Rose Cotton:
a rose fits well, a hint on the adressed person´s name; a speaker who likes or reven loves the adressed person, and who could be a gardener.

"FROM WHAT I HEAR FROM YOU, OLD FRIEND, THESE WERE TROUBLED TIMES INDEED; BUT THEY DIDN`T AFFECT ME, SAFE YOUR FRIENDS WHO PAID ME A NICE LITLLE VISIT!" (LOTR)

This one can be made easier by adding a "Ho! Ho!" or "Merry-dong-dillo" or such: Tom Bombadil talking to Gandalf after the end of the war.

But now let´s go in medias res:

Who could have said, and to whom:
"YOU ARE NOW MY GUEST. FOREVER! HAHAHA!" (from The Silmarillion)
2 possible solutions.

Re: A new kind of game (?)

Lately I have been concentrating so much on the LotR for the site, that my Silmarillion knowledge has grown a little rusty (a lot, actually). But the first thing that came to mind was that Sauron might have chuckled this line as he tossed Beren into his dungeons.

Perhaps there are more specific examples that this quote points to, but this is all I could come up with.

btw... this looks to be another clever game. I am seriously considering breaking all of these games out into their own forum here at the Barrow-Downs (A new categery, each type of game with its own forum). What fo you all think of that idea?

Re: A new kind of game (?)

Yep, Sauron and Beren are possible. The other one (I accept both) would have been Melkor to Maedhros, or Húrin as well.

And breaking the games up wouldn´t do any harm, I rather think it will - at least sooner or later -be inevitable.

(btw, I "borrowed" my quote from "Nightfall in Middle-Earth" by Blind Guardian, where Morgoth says it - sounds really cool, because the speakers in the "interludii" are experienced Shakespeare-actors from England)

Re: Possible Quote

Hmmm... Frodo could have said it, alluding to when he left alone from the company . Had Aragorn and the others seen him leave, they could have persuaded him to stay, and things would have gone a totally different course.
But I don´t think this solution is perfect.

I knew this one was not perfect. Focus more on the actual words of the quote and tell me if that helps. I have a clue I can throw into the quote that may help. But I'll hold off on that for now.

No... but that is a good guess. Certainly a lot of people showed up. But "Changed more than my mind" doesn't really apply to Bilbo.

I know... this one is weird...sorry...keep trying, please.

Re: Possible Quote

You know, this is somehow real fun, both to make them up, and be specific in style, words, and so on, and to solve them, where you have to interpretate every detail.

I even think that Fangorn could have said it to the Hobbits - he would have changed his mind not to help them were there too many hasty little creatures (and when he says "I" he means both Treebeard himself and the whole forest); and he himself, as the whole entity of the Forest of Fangorn, would have been changed because of more "intruders", tramnpling, or unintentionally hurting the trees.

And the quote is a good one - not too explicit, and of the kind which evokes associations in the reader. This is the essence of this game IMO.

Certainly another good guess. But still not what I was looking for. I'll give a small addition to this fictional quote and then, if that doesnt get it, I'll just answer it so you can see my warped logic

Re: Whoever wants to can go next ...

I know I shouldn´t ask two in one go, but the first is so easy, and it´s not made up but borrowed, too.

Whose words could as well have been:
"Blackheart show me / What you hold in hand / I still hunger for more / Release me / From my pain / Give it to me / How I need it..."

And who could have said
"Nay, never hast thou been a heavy burden for me, for light is the voluntary, and heavy only the fiend in battle."

Great finding it on first try, was it too easy?
I tried to put an easy context more cryptically, but it obviously it was still more or less clear.

No, it wasn't easy. I had to give it some thought for a while. I actually figured it out when I was watching TV. It just kind of came to me and I went back to the computer room hoping I was the first

Lemme see if I can think of a new one. If anyone has one, go ahead and post it.

Sure sounds like old man willow when Sam tried to liberate Merry and Pippen by kindling a fire against his trunk. Specifically what he (ostensibly) said to Merry who said that Willow warned him that "he'd be squeezed in two." (Or something to that effect.)

Re: Another possible quote...

It seems to me that Beren might have legitimately said this to Luthien after Manwe's choice.

Re: Another possible quote...

Feels like deja vu all over again. Well, if LotR, then Aragorn and Arwen play the same parts, more or less. But didn't I just read this lament in a reader forum, if not in this site than in another?

Re: Another possible quote...

Navigating pays off; this was the topic of a post I read recently -- the most recent (Earendil's) at Entmoot's LotR forum. Please pardon the plug if its tacky or not done but I am just wondering whether the several sites are generating a kind of Jungian suggestion which carries. Do tell Balin! Are we getting the same stimuli? is it coincindence? or did I just get your question wrong?

Re: Another possible quote...

Balin:
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp I certainly hadn't meant to accuse you of cribbing. I was confused because I had read the other post a few hours before. So in my head they ran together and I thought that someone (or me) had already submitted that answer to your post. I was mostly just talking aloud to myself trying to figure it out. Perhaps I should just shut up and give a quasi-quote.

Who might have said:

&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp "Oh god, was that something moving by the hedge? Oh! The gate! Very quietly now, easy, bolt the door..."

Re: Another possible quote...

That'd have to be Fatty Bolger right before he bolted from Crickhollow.

Re: Another possible quote...

Please, his mother called him Fredegar, there's no reason we can't show the same courtesy. And I probably should have said "Eru." Do Hobbits worship Eru? I forget. Anyway, yes,
Fatty it was.

Re: Another possible quote...

I don't know that the hobbits practiced any kind of religion, though, having inheirited so much tradition from the Northern Kingdom, they probably venerated the Eldar, the Valar and Iluvatar (or whatever vague notion they still held of those icons)

Anyways.... let me think of a quote....hmmm

Who might have said ....

Quote:
You don't say!? Full of gold? And nothing but a bunch of tunnel-rats? Time for a warmer climate.

...and what were the circumstances?
