Re: Who is your favortie character in Tolkiens work?

sam &quot;i am&quot; gamgee. i like him because he is just along for the ride so to speak and ends up a hero. he is the common &quot;man&quot; and gives us that point of view through out the story. he's no fancy pants elf or wandering king, or even wealthy to do hobbit folk.<img src=smile.gif ALT="">

Re: Elrond

Very funny, red! But there is more to life than playing the trumpet and waving a flag around!

My favourite character from the Silmarillion is Feanor, mainly because of his genius, and from the Lord of the Rings it has to be Denethor, because he has a depth which many of the other protagonists lack.

Look into the http://www.fortunecity.co.uk/library/classiccourt/77/Mirror of Desire.</a> </p>

Re: Elrond

Every Hobbit in the book touched me in a different way but I like Legolas and Gimli too. I'll make this simple.
Bilbo= Complains and saves the dwarves butts several times through mere luck. He is also very funny when angry or dilerious.
Frodo= Serious yet kind and wise in his own fashion. Bears the ring but manages to keep smiling because of his good friends.
Sam= Ah, loyalty, wisedom, and sense, who could ask for more but low! He has a peotic mind and a soft heart too!
Merry= Fun loving but wise, looks after the others and thinks ahead. Has a big heart for a small hobbit.
Pippen= Cheery and curious (which often gets him repremanded by Gandalf) A fast friend with a cool nickname.
Legolas= sharp eyed and eared and kind. Sees past the race of dwarves and into the heart of Gimli where he finds a friend.
Gimli= Quick tempered on occasion but funny and smart. Has a big heart for all, even elves.
Ah! But I forget Gandalf!
Gandalf= A wise man of many names and faces but with the same wit and temper! <img src=smile.gif ALT="">

" In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit . . . " That's where it all began.</p>

Re: Keep Elrond -- I'll take the G-man.

red, don't forget that nifty moon-letter gimmick.

At the risk of being obvious, I pick Gandalf. Give the guy his props. Great name, style coming out of his ears, a good heart, a firm, confident leadership style, an excellent horseman, an accomplished raconteur, skilled with the blade, wise, well-read, articulate, multi-lingual, funny, humble, resourceful, gracious, diplomatic when necessary, but harsh and plain-spoken when appropriate. What else? Driven, a self-starter, an ascetic in areas that aided his mission, but able to appreciate the small pleasures of life like good food, a good pipe of tobacco, and good conversation. He had a clear vision of who he was and where he was going, and rarely wavered from it. A few more: gumption, grit, determination, and an uncomplaining spirit. He even knew when and how to bow out gracefully. And please... how great is it that his favorite hobby was Hobbit-lore?

Favorite Silma character? Keep your fancy-pants elves -- I'll take Húrin any day.

Mister Underhill, don't worry about being obvious- Gandalf is definitely my favorite too. I don't know why, exactly. I suppose it's his riding skills and his determination, his bravery against the Balrog, and the wisdom he possessed. Also, I liked his sense of nobility.

Re: Favorite Character

Hi everyone i'm an newbee here. well i've been looking at the site for ages and i have finally disided to write something.
Favourite character? That is prolly one of the most difficult questions to answer ever <img src=ohwell.gif ALT=":\"> right hmmm.
It's either Aragorn just because he's so nice and misterious
Sam because he is so normal and down to earth
The Ents just because i love there characters and i love trees
And Tom Bomidil (sp sorry i can not spell to save my life but you all know what i mean) because i love all the songs and poems that come with him.
Right that my piece

Welcome to the Downs, Winter Willow! Keep on posting!

Of course, I have a soft spot in my heart for old Sam, too. How can you not like the guy? A heart of gold, but tough as old tree roots, too -- the epitome of all the best Hobbitish qualities.

I'm enjoying it, with what little time i have...which is not a lot <img src=frown.gif ALT=""> to much work to do so little time. And also as i have a highly active imagination it's hard not to get stuck there. Yeah i love the books i've read LOTR Tril, and the Hobbit but not the others which i should at some point...and will get round to.

Re: Favorite Character

For some reason, I think that Sauron is a really cool character. I mean, he's not the type I'd want to be friends with or anything, but evil fascinates me.

Fave. good guy would be Aragorn. (Oh, what a unique choice!)

My favorite character must be Treebard even if he has only but a small role.

But if we take one of the company, then it would be Frodo.

Re: Favorite Character

Hands down, my favorite character has got to be Feanor. He was brilliant, even if he wasn't wise, and he was just so crucial to the silmarillion, and, in fact, the entire history of Middle-Earth. He also is a character so full of passion and spirit i found it impossible not to find him a great character. What more can i say?

Re: Favorite Character

My favorite chars are so many but I'll narrow it down...

Luthien = Strong willed, sacrificed her life for love, very coragous and had long brown hair like me <img src=wink.gif ALT="">

Beren = Fearless, coragous, heroic, Went through the valley that ungoliant lived in and he risked his life for love

Galadriel = Ancient, wise, Her hair inspired the creation of the Silmarils and has much hidden power and strength

Gandalf = Who needs an explenation?; you cannot help but love his wisdom mirth and quick temper

Re: Favorite Character

the best characters i think are found in the silmarillion. I am partial to aule and orome, bu they are vala. my favorites are turin and tuor, but i like the mystery behind bombadil and beorn. hmm, for some reason i keep picking two. i also like finrod and cirdan. cirdan just rocks cause he is the oldest elf in ME.

Fav character?

I don't see too many men on this list, what about hurin or tuor? Well anyhoo, i brought them up because I think they're very cool characters. Hurin plays the tragic hero, and I think Tuor is just the coolest of the edain by far. How many other men were granted immortality by Iluvatar himself? That by default makes him cool. <img src=wink.gif ALT=""> Also, I agree with Taimar, Denethor has a lot of depth as a character.
Oh yea, again by far Fëanor is by far my favorite character.

Re: Fav character

Well, I don't like Feanor very much. I admit he's a genius and very skilled but the burning of the ships at Losgard??? Can you, please, explain to me how can you accept that?
And Lothwen's comment about Beren... I think Beren is the luckiest man in Arda. First of all, he doesn't die with his father because he was luckily spying enemies and after that he does NOT arrive at time when Gorlim's ghost warns him. He lives four years meeting birds and plants and killing Morgoth's beasts(?)(I think these are the best things he does) and finally he finds Luthien and she falls in love with him!<img src=ohwell.gif ALT=":\">
Not being happy with that, he tries to give Thingol a Silmaril and he does it by killing (he's to blame) Finrod Felagund and thanks to Huan and of course Luthien (they do all the hard work) arrives at Angband in front of a sleepy Morgoth and he's about to wake him up!!! This is being too long so I'll stop in here but I could write a whole book about Beren 'the Brave'.
And to answer the question of my favourite character I think it could be Aragorn and also Finrod Felagund (<img src=mad.gif ALT=">:"> Beren...), the first because, well, it's Aragorn, brilliant, brave, clever... simply Aragorn; and although Finrod loses the battle versus Sauron I think he's loyal(?? don't have my dictionary) to Beren <img src=mad.gif ALT=">:"> and it's the best elf I do know.

Re: Fav character

Finrod too I liked, he was one of my favorites and where Hurin and Huor, they where who I was going to put next but I thought my list would get a little long if I named all the characters I liked <img src=smile.gif ALT="">

Beren! Beren was lucky, but half those things you said where untrue! he did not decide to get a silmaril but Thingol in his &quot;wisdom&quot; decided to destroy his daughter and beren (and himself as it happened) by sending beren on the quest! and you completely missed out about the valley with ungoliant in(still haven't bothered to look up its name <img src=wink.gif ALT=""> )
it doesn't say much about it in the book, but no one got through that place least of all a mortal except Beren. See now? Beren was lucky, I do resent that one of my fave chars Finrod Felagand died but I blame Thingol for that.

Re: Fav character

Well, Lothwen, I'll try to explain my point of view. It's obvious you admire him, but it's also very clear I don't like him very much (let's be polite).
About Finrod's death I continue thinking Beren is to blame. Sauron wanted to keep the elf alive, but to protect Beren he died!! That time Beren 'the Lucky' was saved thanks to his father, that helped Finrod during a battle (don' t remember which of them) after what Barahir was given the ring and Finrod's gratitude(? I hope this is correct) forever, and of course Luthien and Huan, who defeated Sauron while the great Beren was crying Finrod's death instead of having helped him. I do admit Beren could cross Nan Dungortheb and that was a big deal, but the battle against Morgoth... <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/ emoticons/laugh.gif ALT=":lol"> ; he did nothing but hinding and waiting for Morgoth's defeat against Luthien to steal him the Silmarils and I continue saying he was just about to wake him up but luckily he didn't.
I think you like Beren because he did everything he could to fight for his love and I take your point and won't discuss it, but I don' t think he's a great hero for that because of his big, big luck.

I have two.... Of course the &quot;Witch-King of Angmar&quot; and his nine. Like i said somewhere else, the presence is known before they arrive. Gandalf barely stood against them at Weathertop and they are the most powerful and feared Leiutenants in any story anywhere.
But conversely, I have a spot for Legolas too. Out of the Fellowship, he never lost his cool. He was as good a fighter as any of them, but he had the gentlest side to him. The elvish quality of being &quot;on the same wavelength&quot; as nature is just cool....

I think Eomer is an awesome character. He's strong, brave, good warrior, and even though he doesn't have much personality, he's still one swell fellow. I also think Tulkas the Vala is a great character. I mean, c'mon now, he beat up Melkor with brass knuckles (or their equivalent in Arda, a metal-clad fist). And on top of that he made him his servant! I think Tulkas was just one cool guy.

&quot;Their Oath shall drive them, and yet betray them, and ever snatch away the very treasures that they have sworn to pursue.&quot;

Oh yea, and Feanor rules! And the burning of the ships at Losgar? Any great or determined leader would do the same, it was a statement. He was essentially saying &quot; We're here and we're not going back 'til we win&quot; (and also betraying Fingolfin in the process, but eh, what can ya do?&quot;.

Re: Favorite Character

I am glad to see Finrod getting the attention he deserves. For those who want to see more of Finrod read Morgoth's Ring. It contains the longest dialouge between and Elf and Mortal [woman] in the legendarium I am aware of.
Finrod, Galadriel and Aragorn get my vote.

Aragorn was able to persevere, keep his mouth shut, and be patient, for longer than most of us will live. He won his Luthien the hard way.
I can agree somewhat about Beren's Luck. Keep in mind that Luthien must have had good taste! however, I don't think his holding out against the orcs in Dorthonion for years or crossing NanDungortheb was luck, he was one gritty vegetarian.<img src=smile.gif ALT=""> Beren should have had the wherewithal to pick up some kind of weapon on the way out f Angband though, not I suppose that it would have made any difference. Huan and Carcaroth were detined to meet - still thrusting the one thing you came to get in the face of a beast w/ large sharp teeth is not a stroke of genius in my book.
But he still gets to be numbered among the great Men for winning the love of Luthien if nothing else.I just finished going through the Lay of Liethian in HoME III for the first time {I have a hard time w/ poetry] and it has some truly beautiful elaborations not found in the Silm.

Re: Favorite Character

My fave character must be gandalf. He's just the best.
And off course Beren what he did out of love... WOW I'd have said: Well, was very nice to meet you Luthien, but nothing on this planet can get me to go to Morgoth. So long...

Re: Favorite Character

i think that my favorite character has to be sam. Talk about loyalty. He followed Frodo to Mount Doom, and was the only one who stuck with him to the end. (Well, i suppose the others would have if they had been able to) He was also generous, loving, kind, and wanted to see elves almost as much as i do! What better can you ask for?

My favorites (I have more than 1, of course) are Finrod, Galadriel, and Sam. They are all so noble in their own ways.

Re: Favorite Character

first of alllet me say that my all time favorite character is Feanor!<img src=roll.gif ALT=":rollin"> secondly in the LOTR it would have to be Legolas.... for he had a raw deal as far as elves go, he should have gotten more respect &amp; much more honor considering he was the Prince of The elven kingdom of Mirkwood!!<img src=rolleyes.gif ALT=":rolleyes"> also...go post at http://pub48.ezboard.com/bostinedhilOst~in~Edhil</a> The City of the Elves

Thranduil: Sindarin Elf, King of the Silvan Elves in the north of Greenwood the Great (Mirkwood); Father of Legolas! </p>

Re: Favorite Character

I would imagine that he was not the 'crown prince'.

Keep in mind at elrond's council Boromir's lineage is not really noted.

Merry and pippin where heirs of their respective families ,but this is not mentioned until the appendices I think. Legolas himself never once refers to himself as royalty [rohan for instance].
I will have to check re: Lorien but I would not be suprised if he does not refer to his father even to Celeborn his distant kinsman [ he prob. already knew as 'messages had come out of rivendell...&quot;

Anyway L. seemed to keep a low profile about it himself.
I think truth be told he was somewhat awed by Aragorn, Lothlorien, Rivendell and Minas Tirith.
JRRT says about Thranduil's realm in UT that 'His sylvan folk were rude and rustic &quot; p. 259

Gotta be Legolas. Anyone who can nail an enemy in the throat, in the dark, at a distance, is okay by me. I love the elvish things about him (lightheartedness, agility, etc.) And I admire his lack of bravado - His father's a king, he's one of the greatest archers in ME (Love that &quot;twang!&quot, but his strength and wisdom are veiled beneath a gentle and approachable demeanor.

That said, I've also gotta say that Sam has more b**** than the rest of the Fellowship combined!

Agreed. On the part about Sam that is.

Re: Favorite character

Interesting that several people picked Feanor. I didn't like him at all, from the moment when he turn down his half-brother's attempt to make some sort of peace. In the end he was responsible for a lot of deaths.

Re: Favorite character

Deff Sam. He represents everything good and pure, kind like the Shire before its corruption. Throughout all of the trials and tribulations, Sam stays faithful, he almost blindly loves and helps his master, and ends up saving the world in the bargain. In return for staying virtuous and true throughout the quest, I think Sam receives inner peace when he returns home, unlike Frodo and some of the others. I know JRRT claimed that his books were not allegories, but it's obvious what shines through, and you can see good, simple, Christian characteristics in Sam.
