If Luthien, Galadriel, and Earendil are getting close, I'm gonna guess one of their ancestors- Arwen.

I had two guesses, but lord of dor-lomin just guessed one of them, so I'm down to one. You said that hope was kind of part of it, then how about Estel, aka Aragorn?

Here's one: What is greater than heaven, more evil than hell, a poor man has it and a rich man needs it? This isn't too hard but I hope you enjoy!

I'm guessing the chapter you're thinking about is Shelob's Lair, which might make the answer the light from the phial of Galadriel, or the light of Earendil. That's the only way I can make Galadriel and Earendil close to the answer, and the answer not be an object. If so, shame on you.
That's far too complicated for a riddle.

All riddles can't be easy...
And you are very close when you say the light of Earendil... you are thinking of the right two characters... but, breeze back up to the last clue I gave (just above your answer). I guess this is one for those who have read the books many times, or those who love F&S, or those who just read carefully. I didn't think it was that difficult. |

I am determined to get this darn riddle. It's like an itch I can't scratch.
And, since some of us (read; me) are still stuck on dial-up, and it is frustrating to have to wait for the previous page to load, I thought I'd re-post the riddle, so I don't have to wait next time. Glowing like a star so bright Love and tenderness do I show In the darkness of the night I bring you memories of what you know The light itself could fade very soon But now is rest and forgotten is doom My latest guess is the light that Gandalf and Sam see in Frodo. You are correct. I figured it would be a little easier, but I guess not. It is mainly the light that Sam sees in Frodo while he sleeps. Because in that scene it is said how he sees the face of his old master and he forgot about their danger for a short while. |

Woohoo!
Well. Now I've got to think of a riddle. Ummm... Off the top of my head; My treachery leads to your great deeds, I've broken your family, then protected you from harm. Because of me you safely escaped, because of me you had to. My protection lasts only tonight. Who am I, and who am I talking to? Extra kudos if you can tell me when. Not Grima.
Hmm. Boromir almost works, but not quite. I've broken your family is meant quite literally. Think more abstractly. Phantom, you get one out of three, but I'm not going to tell you which.

nope, nope and nope. The 'talking to Frodo' is right. Again, think more abstract, and everything is meant to be taken quite literally, including "my protection lasts only tonight" which is where the Ring as an answer breaks down.

The thing about breaking the family is kind of throwing me. How did Frodo's parents die? Were they the ones that died on the Brandywine? If so, I suppose I'd guess the Brandywine talking to Frodo (it also helped Frodo escape from the ringwraiths, protecting him from harm) but I'm not sure if it fits "because of me you had to" part.
If not that, how 'bout Bilbo to Frodo?

Boy, it seems like we're really getting out there. I guess I'll throw in a guess or two, and at least narrow the possibilities.
Gandalf to Frodo? Tom to Frodo? or perhaps Frodo to Frodo? or Elrond to Frodo? or maybe Galadriel to Frodo? that ought to trim the list!! [ January 28, 2003: Message edited by: lord of dor-lomin ]

Phantom, you are the winner! The Brandywine river (or, of course, the Baranduin) speaking to Frodo.
The "because of me you had to" is pretty vague, I agree. But my thinking was that it was because of the river that Frodo was adopted by Bilbo, who gave Frodo the Ring, which made him have to escape. Congrats on figuring that out.

Hobbits?
Little things, healing the Shire after the Scouring. Elanor the Fair, daughter of Samwise Gamgee, looked like an elf-maid and was one of the few hobbits (at her birth) to have golden hair.

If not what Nuranar said, how about seeds? Little things that become big, right, and I'm assuming it means after the scouring of the Shire. And that would make the fair one the mallorn tree.

"At my birth, hearts were high,
Banners were flowing in the sky, At my end, lives were cost, Tears were flowing and hope was lost." I think that is war. Kind of the same as a finnish poem about our civil war three generations ago. Rough translation (as I think it went) would be something like: "In a great square, in front of his troop Long live liberty, shouted a man. By his ditch, behind the woods eyes covered by dirty rag or linen Long live liberty, shouted a man. Under the banners, with great dedication Ended his speech, long live liberty, another man" [ February 02, 2003: Message edited by: bombur ] |

Definitely on the right track, Bombur, and I suppose it fits. However, I'm not looking for an answer that broad and general.
