1420! Tolkien translated

I always wonder if the books I read (translations in Dutch by Max Schuchart), were as good as the original ones. of course this is a matter opinion, but isn't a book always better in the original language?

I'm a Dutchie living in America and I have read the translation of "Shelters in Stone" bij Jean M Auel. "Dal Der Beloften" simply was boring. Then I read the English version. It was much better. The story is the same, but how it was told just was to "modern". I guess it really depends on who is doing the translating, and who is doing the reading.
