Earnur has just left Hobbiton.
The Dangers of Arnor

Hello all, this is my first post here, I have been a great fan of Tolkien ever since reading The Hobbit back in my childhood. I am trying to find out what I can of Tolkien's world, but the most pressing question I have today is:

In the Council of Elrond, Aragorn describes to the Council how Butturbur and the residents of Bree reside 'in a day's march of horrors that would freeze them to the bone'. (or something like that)

Apart from the Barrow Downs, what other horrors could there be that close to Bree?

He might be referring to the ruins of Fornost, which were near Bree and referred to as "Deadmen's Dike" by the Bree-landers in reference to its disastrous fall during the wars with Angmar, although whether or not Fornost was genuinely full of evil things might be less certain. The Rangers still visited it, so perhaps not. He might be just generally referring to the evil things which had dwelt in Eriador since those days - Orcs, Trolls, Wolves and the like roaming the wilderness and waylaying travellers.

See here for a fairly in-depth discussion of that subject.
