Who slew Scatha the Worm?

I'm not sure about the extra-credit, but four dark things in the Hobbit and LoTR would be wargs, orcs, a balrog, and a dragon. The fellowship of the ring was attacked by wargs in Hollin; orcs were all over the books; in Moria, the were attacked by the balrog; and the dragon Smaug was in the Hobbit.

I think the question was which ones appeared or were mentioned in both: The specific ones would be:

Sauron (mentioned as the necromancer at the end of the Hobbit)
Gollum
Smaug (mentioned briefly during the LOTR)
Tom, Bert and William

Also, goblins/orcs, wargs and spiders (Shelob) appeared in both.

I was thinking of specific "dark things" -- Sauron and the trolls -- I didn't know Smaug was mentioned in LotR -- so Maglor gets it. No extra credit for either of you.

Finwe killed by Morgoth
Fingolfin killed by Morgoth
Fëanor killed by Balrogs
Fingon killed by Balrogs
Finrod killed by Wolf
Orodreth killed by orcs or Glaurung
Finduilas killed by orcs
Celebrain wounded by orcs - so bad that she had to leave ME
Gil-Galad killed by Sauron
Celebrimbor killed by Sauron

I dont think you're going to count these two in, but...
Aegnor killed by the fires in Dagor Bragollach
Angrod killed by the fires in Dagor Bragollach

it's pretty even who were the worst bad guy!

Feanor and Fingon were slain by balrogs, Fingolfin by Morgoth, Finrod by a werewolf, Orodreth by orcs (?) in the Dagor Bragollach. So I'll say balrogs.

Actually a larger number of Finwë's descendants apparently were killed in battles with other elves (Celegorm, Caranthir, Curufin, Amrod, Amras)

Feanor, Fingolfin, Fingon, Finrod, Celebrimbor, Gil-Galad, Angrod, Aegnor, Turgon and Orodreth; at least thats what I can think of right now. Feanor and Fingon were slain by Gothmog, which was a Balrog death. Fingolfin was slain by Morgoth himself, and Finrod was slain by a werewolf. Celebrimbor and Gil-Galad were slain by Sauron, and the rest is vague, but probably meant to be slain by orcs. That means the most frequent cause of death is orcs.
