Re: HoME books being auctioned on eBay

I've been following TolKien items on eBay for some time and believe that bidders either too often get caught up in a frenzy or overbid because they have little idea of value. I've managed some real bargains on eBay but not recently. Try bestedeals.com or bestbookdeals.com for new books and alibris or bibliofind for used. You may do much better than on eBay. RKittle, I hope you're reading this.

What is HoME?: Ok, now I understand what canon means, but what is it? From what I've read it's supposed to be some kind of series of books?

HoME stands for "History of Middle Earth". It is a twelve book series detailing the history of Tolkien's writings about Middle Earth. The series begins with The Book of Lost Tales I and II which contain JRRT's earliest writings about what would become the Silmarillion.

Volumes 1-5 deal with the Silmarillion. 6-9 deal with the writing of LoTR. 10-11 deal with the Silmarillion again but contain a lot of Tolkien's philosophical writings. 12 contains unpublished sections of the LoTR appendices (Tolkien had to shorten them for publication). All these books were edited by Tolkien's son Christopher.

Ohhh! it's an acronym! Now I know what you're talking about. I have it too, but I didn't know it was called HoME-heh. Thanks Mithadan

Canon=text written by J.R.R himself, methinks? Am I right?

In the context of Tolkien, there is no real accepted definition of "canon". Some say written by Tolkien and published during his lifetime. Others might exclude The Hobbit because it was not written with the intent to incorporate it into his prior (or later) Middle Earth writings. Most would exclude The Silmarillion and all of HoME because they are not final drafts or are heavily edited.

This forum tries to create a "canon" by reviewing all the pieces of the Silmarillion in HoME and trying to piece it together as Tolkien might have wanted it to be.

eleanor: If you look at the different threads here you will find more deifinite definitions of canon, but Mithadan is also correct.
