Tolkien Who is your favorite Lord of The Rings character?

I'd have to say that my two favorite characters are, and have always been, Meriadoc and Peregrin.
Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan were definatly the right guys for the role. Agreed?

I must say that Frodo was, mostly due to the magnificent performance Elijah Wood gave, and Sam and Gandalf run very close seconds. In the books, my favorite characters are Aragorn, Faramir, and Theoden (with Sam and Gandalf again running very close seconds, and Eowyn, Merry and Pippin coming close upon their heels, with the friendship of Legolas and Gimli one of my favorite character plots), but I must say that while I loved the movies very much, I was disappointed in the character changes in Aragorn, Faramir, and Theoden. My heartiest admiration goes to Elijah Wood for the emotion and beauty he put into Frodo.

Oh, it's really hard to say which one. But the question is, are you talking actors or the characters themselves? Out of the characters, I like Aragorn, Boromir, Faramir and Gandalf, of course.
As for the actors, I liked Viggo Mortenson's performance, but his political stance paints him in a negative light for me. (Political subjects are not open to discusison on this thread; that's the way it is for me, and I am just making that as a passing comment) I like John Ryce-Davis; his comments on the TTT and FOTR EE's are always really good. I like Sean Bean, but I saw his name on the credits for a porn movie a while ago, if it's the same one. And I like Sean Astin.

It's Faramir all the way! Í've loved the character since I first read the book, and in my opinion he wasn't htat bad in the movies either. especially in ROTK. Close seconds are Gandalf, Aragorn and Éowyn.

The movie, I've never much cared about.
The book... I'd say Eomer son of eomund, heir to the throne and lord of Rohan, which was once called fields of Calahadron. I love his words, and poetry.
Close second is Faramir son of Denethor, Lord of Ithilien. He is wise, and valorous, and much more believeable character than Aragorn son of Arathorn.

If you don't know my favourite character by now, you never will.
Close second is his gorgeous younger son Faramir, his lovely lady wife Eowyn, her warrior brother Eomer, his beautiful wife Lothiriel, her valiant father Imrahil, his tragic sister Finduilas, her other beloved son Boromir, and his fellow soldier of Gondor Beregond. And Forlong the Fat, who I can't really link into my little chain... hehe, I linked them all by relative-ness... no, I don't have anything better to do with my time...
Others who I can't link in are Thranduil and Elrond. And the wonderful Thorongil. And I know I should say Aragorn, but Thorongil is my favourite of his guises.
Of the actors... currently developing a crush on Viggo Mortensen. Blame my friend...
John Noble, obviously... and David Wenham, who is a wonderful man and should clone himself so everyone on earth can have a copy of him. I'm also rather taken with Billy Boyd. He'd make a wonderful shopping trip buddy.

If we are talking about the movies, my favourite actor was Sean Astin, as he was seemingly born for the role. He played Sam exactly as I imagined him to be in the books. Boromir, played by Sean Bean is a close second.
Contrary to a lot of people, I think that the way Elijah Wood played Frodo made him look really pathetic and weaker than his Hobbit will should have made him.

My favorite character in both books and movies is Boromir. I love the way Sean Bean played him. It's strange, I just re-read the book, and in the FotR he seems to be portrayed slightly harshly. What I mean is, he disagrees with people a lot, argues, things like that. But when he's dead he still features in the story a lot, and people speak very highly of him. Faramir, for instance. I'm not sure why that was relevant, but I progress. I like the way his character's flawed, I always seem to have a weakness for people like that. And he's very brave. But Sean Bean portrayed him so well, I can't quite put my finger on it but he made me like the character more.
I also like Pippin, because he's fun, curious and amusing, but can be brave and loyal also. I think the way he grows up througout the books is brilliant.

Favourite character: Sam. All the way. Sean Astin did an absolutely brilliant job, and regardless of what the Academy says, in my mind, he gave us an Oscar-worthy performance.

My favorite character from both the books and the movies is Samwise Gamgee - and needless to say Sean Astin is my favorite among the cast because in my mind he was Sam in the movies - and yes he did give an Oscar-worthy performance in ROTK no matter what those nimrods of the Academy say!
[ 2:44 PM February 01, 2004: Message edited by: Arathiriel ]

As characters are concerned, Frodo is my favorite, in the books and movies. I think that Elijah Wood's performance was unbelievable, and one of my favorites!
But my all-time favorite actor in Lord of the Rings (and everywhere else), Is Christopher Lee! He is so devoted to everything he does, and has always been a devoted fan of Tolkien's works. Even outside of his part in real-life, he seems just like Saruman the White, and when he is on screen, you feel as if Curumo himself is right with you. In every aspect of the works of Professor Tolkien, Christopher Lee knows it all.

I think Boromor (Sean Bean) is my favorite because he brought some great depth to the character in the movie that worked very well. In the book, my favorite was Saruman, which Christopher Lee did a great job with, but he was left out too much to be my favorite. Sean Astin was EXCELLENT, even though I never liked Sam that much.
Oh, and hats off to all the nameless actors who filled in the blanks:
Gamling, Hama, and Beregond.

Hm....do I really have to post his name? Most folks are going to say, "DUH, Samwise, like we didn't know that!!??" But I can't help it. I fell in love with the character of Sam Gamgee when I was 12 and first read the books. When I got here, who else's name could I take (I mean, gee, I went by his name for the majority of my 7th grade year).
As for the movies, I was at first concerned how Mr. Astin would play my Sam, (I mean, I hadn't seen the guy in anything since GOONIES at that time)....but he was wonderful. I can't think of anyone (well, one person, but he was just following a script he didn't write), who didn't play their character well in any of the movies...but Sean P. Astin WAS and always will be Sam to me from his performance, and if, as he seemed to indicate in an article I read, he ever wants to shake the character of Samwise Gamgee, so to speak, he never will. He played my dear favorite Hobbit far to well. He'll be the Gardener forever.

I can't really say because everyone is wonderful and important in their own way. I will say that I love Gandalf. Ian McKellen is Gandalf to me and should've won that oscar! I love that Gandalf is forever the leader figure that everyone looks up to. He is often left to make the decisions that will affect the fates of all the peoples of Middle Earth. That and I have some weird kind of grandfatherly crush on Ian McKellen. I love all the hobbits. Sam Gamgee just breaks my heart. I can't read the book, especially RotK without tears in my eyes for Sam. Faramir is an excellent character and was redeemed(in the movie) with the EE and his role in RotK. David Wenham is very talented. Eomer is a great character as well and has many great lines in the book that should've been used in the movie! He deserves more credit! Christopher Lee is Saruman. He has the most amazing screen presence out of any actor that worked on the movies. That voice!!! It sends shivers down my spine. But credit must be given to all the actors for giving such excellent performances.

In the movies, my favorite character was Boromir. I don't like him that much in the books, but Sean Bean played the role with so much intelligence and emotion, it was impossible for me not to emphathize with him. I was impressed with Andy Serkis' peformance, too -- he even had me feeling sorry for Gollum at points. I was sort of worried about how Eowyn would be written and portrayed, as she is my favorite character in the books & it would have been a huge let-down not to have liked the movie version. I liked Miranda Otto's performance even if I didn't always agree with the writers.

Thats so wrong...
Got no other candait for him thought....
Elijah Woods as frodo was so wrong of an number of resons.... One is that he looks to young to be 50 years old... and well he looks to whats the word? hmmm... cute.... thats wrong... In terms of being his character, definately Christopher Lee. He understood every aspect of Saruman as a character, his powers, feelings, and motivations. Pity he didn't have more screen time. Actually (bit of trivia) Lee had J.R.R.Tolkein's blessing to play Gandalf if there was ever a screen adaptation, and he was one of the only members of the cast to have met him.

I would have to say Legolas is my favorite Character, because he really brings out a part in the fellowship that no one else can. Of course everyone has their qualities, but Legolas' has a sort of special touch to the Fellowship. He is good with a bow and a sword and I just think that he brings alot of strength and courage to the Fellowship. I don't think the Fellowship would have gone as far as they did without Legolas. During the battle of Helms Deep and the battle of Minas Tirith, Legolas contrubuted alot to them with his unique skills and talent. I think That Orlando Bloom was a great actor for the part of Legolas. I just Love Legolas!!!!

In the movie I would say Sam. I think that Sean Astin played him wonderfully. Especially in RotK, many of his lines made me want to cry, and I never cry in movies.
In the book, it is Frodo, closely seconded by Aragorn. The other 3 hobbits are also favorites.

You people don't know the finer character in the movie. It has to be Andy C. who played Gollum and Smeagol. That guy is the coolest character ever! Of course I'm a guy, so Legolas and Aragorn aren't good looking to me(Arwen and Eowyn maybe), but they were played good in the movie.
As for in the books, I loved Bilbo. Everything about him is so cool. I liked all of the otherr hobbits too.

My favorite character has always been Eowyn. I like the fact that she's strong, and not afraid of most things other women would fear, but that she's also vulnerable and inexperienced in other ways. Her character also underwent a lot of development, from being a woman who was "fair but cold" to one who was finally not afraid to feel. Of course, it helped a lot that Miranda Otto is a very, very good actor.
Another favorite would be Aragorn, and I think that Viggo Mortensen also did an admirabe job portraying him. I know that my fellow book-loyalists would probably kill me for saying this *hides in a corner* but I think it was nice that he was able to turn the sometimes one-dimensional character in the book to one whom almost everyone could relate to.

I've always loved Faramir.
Gondor has kind of had an effect on me, I might compare it to Boromir's feeling for the city. Being said, I love elves. Faramir kind of brings in the best of both worlds. He's wise, and fairer than most of his kin, like the elves. But then again he has the strong pride for his country, and loves his father dearly.
I thought David Wenham did a spectacular job protraying all of this, so Faramir pretty much takes the cake for me in both the books AND the movies.

In both film and movie, Samwise Gamgee is my favorite character. Followed by Gimli, Saruman, Gandalf, and Treebeard.
I'm going to give honorable mention to John Rhys-Davis' perfect performance, despite the fact that, since he was six feet tall, he did a lot of his work alone and in front of blue screens. And he was alergic to his prosthetics. But even if he had not had all these hindrances, he still did an excellent job, and was the perfect dwarf.

come on. We ALL know what the Ka RAVES about .BOROMIR of course! i mean look at it from a researchers point of view (the Ka's occupation is of a researcher). He's one of Tolkien's best characters. He adds so much depth to the situation of thr ring. He explains what the ring can do to you through the trial he faces during his short stay in the fellowship. He is the situation of the ring on people and weaknesses we all must face.

in other words, you have to be a boromir to understand a boromir. or know what it's like to have a great temtation... either works.

Oooh...At first it was tied (in the book) with Aragorn, Gandalf and Frodo. (Well not exactly tied...I liked them most, but in that order of importance). Then I saw the films and began to appreciate Sam...aww, Sam!!!
And Merry! And Pippin!!! Um, yeah...
But I think in the films Legolas clinches it for me. Just a little bit, you know... Especially at the coronation...I tell you, if I hadn't been sitting down my knees would have buckled...I managed to do that watching Frodo somehow...I think it was in TTT when he does his adorable rolling-eye thing and goes 'they're here, they've come'...how DOES he do that?
*Slaps herself* Ok, sorry about that...but come on, you must have guessed the Leggy thing was coming, look at my avvie. Or maybe not...I try to keep my drooling to a minimum, due to being fairly observant (Ok, you really don't need to be observant to notice this) and seeing that you guys can't stand Nazgirls... Also my friends can't stand it either. They're Aragorn girls really... Filthy humans...what they see in him I just don't know. On the other hand, he doesn't have that ridiculous accent that Legolas has...*sniggers*
And Viggo's politics annoy me too, beyond belief. So I ignore him as a person and just concentrate on him as Aragorn.

Aragorn is my favortie due to his bravery, heritage, and all around personalitly, but I have to admit that I most realte with Feanor. I myself am a very restless person who is always seeking new challenges and is quick to anger. STill, Aragorn is my all-tiome favorite.
