3) Golug-Half a ringbearer leads departing ones.
4) Aratar-Assembly that is Quenya and father.
5) Hollin-Chamber not outside, former Elven land.
6) Aulendil-Maiarin son of Vardamir.

Right, at least we've gotten somewhere. Someone, anyone, care to take a shot? I'm far too mentally exhausted to deal with Elenrod's nasssty, trickssssy password.

Nilpaurion Felagund 01-26-2004 10:48 PM

Wow! I'll take that as a compliment...

But where's my password?!

Turambar 01-27-2004 08:43 AM

Is the Password a Scramble (anagram) of the first letters, or something else?

Firefoot 01-27-2004 03:22 PM

Stupid, fat password. If it's not an anagram of the first letters I've been wasting a lot of time. As far as I can tell they don't make anything. My brain is fried.

Celebrian 01-27-2004 10:09 PM

The password letters look like A GERTHA (a rune)

Nilpaurion Felagund 01-27-2004 11:36 PM

It's not an anagram...it's something like transposition...you know, like, shifting...

EDIT: Let's raise the stakes - winner gets an all-expense-paid trip to home!

Turambar 02-03-2004 07:56 AM

This Password is fading. How about a better description of what "transposition" means ? I tried moving forward or backward one letter (R becomes S or Q, E becomes F or D, etc.); that doesn't work.

Finwe 02-03-2004 07:32 PM

Yes, indeed. We could use more hintses.

Nilpaurion Felagund 02-03-2004 10:23 PM

OK, maybe "transposition" is the wrong technical term...the clues are in the exact same position, but the password is hidden in another place, away from the initial letters. It's in a straight line...

R A N G A
E A R E N D I L
G O L U G
A R A T A R
H O L L I N
A U L E N D I L
T A R G O N

There! *points at monitor* Do you see it?

Finwe 02-04-2004 08:31 AM

Angainor? The chain that bound Morgoth?

Nilpaurion Felagund 02-04-2004 09:09 PM

Wow! There's another word there? Angaino's there, too? An oversight on my part.

By the way, it's wrong!

Nilpaurion Felagund 02-04-2004 09:13 PM

No, wait. That's right...

Finwe 02-04-2004 09:31 PM

Hmm.... since I'm not exactly feeling up to the challenge, after a brain-numbing Password like that, mine is going to be remarkably easy. So, in the interests of all, I'm going to defer my right to a better person. (In layman's terms, someone else can go.)

Nilpaurion Felagund 02-04-2004 09:58 PM

Mind numbing? You heap too much praise upon me. *blushes*

Celebrian 02-09-2004 10:40 PM

Nilpaurion Felagund 02-11-2004 02:41 AM

6. Bilbo?

Firefoot 02-11-2004 06:09 AM

5. Ent?

Celebrian 02-11-2004 06:10 AM

Nilparion Felagund, continue burra'ing for 6. :)

Firefoot: Sorry, many Ent waters cannot quench 5.

Estanesse 02-11-2004 07:14 AM

4) Herald of Manwë ?

Celebrian 02-11-2004 07:20 AM

Estanesse, that guess is wrong, but your method and persistence should pay off eventually.

Estanesse 02-11-2004 07:27 AM

what about 6) William

Turambar 02-11-2004 09:34 AM

#2 Narya ?

Celebrian 02-11-2004 10:10 AM

Well, William is Way off for 6, of course!

Narya is a good logical guess, Master of Doom, but I invite you to think associatively for #2 :p

Miriel 02-11-2004 10:27 AM

Okay ... as a random guess ...
4) Lady of the Seas?

Celebrian 02-11-2004 10:49 AM

Miriel , you've got the form, but not the person. Try again!

Miriel 02-11-2004 11:19 AM

*sighs*
Hmm, can't find any other Maiar that are 'Lady of ....', so will try a few Lords. ;)
Wind Lord.....Lord of Gifts.....Lord of Mordor....Lord of the Rings...?
If you don't like random guessing, please inform me, and I'll stop. ;)

Celebrian 02-11-2004 11:32 AM

*goes to check the rules on Page 1, waffles*
The ring is correct.

Miriel 02-11-2004 11:41 AM

Yay!
And, how about
5) Ind?
The Sindarin for inner thought, meaning, or heart; also part of the word 'mind'.

symestreem 02-11-2004 04:31 PM

How about Morgoth or Melkor for #1? Either that or Sauron, since he did not allow his name to be used.

Finwe 02-11-2004 07:33 PM

6) Mad Baggins?

Celebrian 02-11-2004 10:46 PM

Miriel, you are close!
Symestreem, you are close, also!
Finwe, I'm not looking for a particular hobbit for 6 (adds exclamation points for fun, anyway)!!!!!

Nilpaurion Felagund 02-12-2004 12:22 AM

I'm guessing...

5. Ure? The last letter of the Tengwar alphabet(redundancy, I know - sue me. ;) ) and coincidentally means heart, which is the symbol of the most accursed day of the year - Valentines?
6. A hobbit? A burglar? A halfling? A troll? A squadron of P-3s?

Can be arranged...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Celebrian 02-12-2004 07:47 AM

Valentine

Nilpaurion,
5) Hroom! You seem to have two Feanorian characters mixed together, but then, that's the idea of Valentine's Day anyway, isn't it?

6) You've got the concept!

One guess at a time, please.

Turambar 02-12-2004 11:11 AM

#2 Ruby (Gamgee) ?

#6 Banakil ?

Celebrian, can you re-post the puzzle with the correctly guessed answers inserted?
