No, not Beren. For #2, one of the "thefts" is related in LotR, the other in the Silmarillion.

Salix 10-09-2003 01:59 PM

2) Morgoth?

Turambar 10-09-2003 05:47 PM

Nope. Hint for #2: Akallabeth.

Voralphion 10-09-2003 07:36 PM

2)Isildur.

1)Pippin

1) Lindir

Turambar 10-10-2003 07:04 AM

Lindir and isildur are correct!

Re-posting this page:

(1) Lindir (Reluctant literary critic, refused to count sheep)
(2) Isildur (Purloiner of tree-fruit and jewelry)
(3) Nobottle (Dry town of the Shire)
(4) Arwen (Queenly new raiment of the night)
(5) Eonwë (One we would follow as general, teacher or messenger)
(6) Yielded to a friend, I hear.
(7) Epessë (Call me (this) later)
(8) Nameless Land (But . . . what do you call Mordor?)

I'm not sure if I know what you mean by 'embedded clue', but-
5) Elwe

Turambar 10-10-2003 08:24 AM

A "embedded clue" = a scramble or "word within words", within the clue.

Elwë is not correct for #5. Hint: Ainu.

miellien 10-10-2003 10:23 PM

#4- Evenstar? The "queen" and "raiment of night" (star) seems to fit to me.
#6- Legolas? Yielded the contest of the orc-count to Gimili.

Nilpaurion Felagund 10-10-2003 10:48 PM

#4 is Arwen, reversed...

Is #4 Orome?

Arwen is right, good job finding the embedded clue.

The embedded clue for #5 is an anagram (scramble). I think you were guessing Orome for #5 - not correct, but the answer is an Ainu.

Hint for #7 - this is a tough one. It's an Elvish word.

Finwe 10-11-2003 08:32 AM

5) Eonwë (general, teacher, messenger of the Valar during the First Age)

7) mellon (you would call someone you met "mellon" later, once you had gotten to know them as a friend)

Turambar 10-11-2003 08:10 PM

Eonwë is right for #5 (anagram of "one we").

Mellon is not right for #7, although it is closely related to the answer to another clue.

HINT for #7: Galadriel.

Finwe 10-11-2003 08:20 PM

6) Maedhros? (He yielded the High Kingship to Fingolfin, a "friend.")

7) Galadriel (she was initially called Alatariel and Nerwen by her parents, but she was later called Galadriel by Celeborn)

8) Land of Darkness?

Turambar 10-11-2003 10:06 PM

Very close for #7 - there is an elvish word for such later given names.

For #8 - another way of referring to Mordor is what I'm after.

Nilpaurion Felagund 10-12-2003 07:11 PM

Is #7 epessë?
Is #8 Nameless Land?
Is the Password Linaewen?

yes, YES and YES !

Good job, Nilpaurion. http://forum.barrowdowns.com/ubb/icons/icon14.gif

Linaewen was the marshland in Nevrast where many sea-birds lived.

Thank you, Master of Doom *bows*

By the way, here's my bit...

1. A land in Gondor, two tens with and without me, lacking a head and a tail.
2. He created thepresent moment ahead of cruelty.
3. They were many, but only three did something.
4. Epessë of the ocean of headgear.
5. Hidden elf ends in fish's top valley.

By the way, what's #6? I'm stumped there...

Turambar 10-14-2003 06:17 AM

#6 was West Gate (of Moria), which opened to the word mellon = "friend".

E: isn't it Will Truman?

Turambar 10-14-2003 09:32 AM

#3 Istari?

Nilpaurion Felagund 10-14-2003 09:03 PM

Sorry. Will Truman. My mistake..*proceeds to scold self* "You should have gone with the Karen Walker quote, you imbecile!"

By the way, Istari?...Not quite. The whole group. Two words.

Finwe 10-15-2003 07:10 PM

#3: The Wizards or The Maiar?

Nilpaurion Felagund 10-15-2003 08:17 PM

No...both are Elvish. Quenya, in fact.

Turambar 10-16-2003 12:53 PM

Heren Istarion ?

Nilpaurion Felagund 10-16-2003 07:03 PM

You're right, Turambar!

Updating...

2) Morgoth?
5) Voronwë?

No...but he's Ainur...the phrase after "He created the..." is cryptic.

No, but you're on the right track. "Hidden Elf" means he's of Gondolin...the rest are cryptic

Finwe 10-17-2003 05:15 PM

5) Earendil?

Turambar 10-20-2003 10:17 AM

I know you've given some hints already, Nilpaurion, but I'm just not getting them.

2)Aulё

Turambar 10-20-2003 05:46 PM

The "now-grim" - of course ! Good one, Arestevana.

Arestevana 10-20-2003 06:34 PM

Why thank you, Turambar.

Nilpaurion-
Is it to early for me to guess?
Assuming Aule is the answer to number two, is the password be Turin or Mahal?

Turambar 10-20-2003 07:05 PM

What does he mean by two tens in #1? Can't be XX? Twenty? Score?

Or for that matter, "with or without me"? A U2 reference? :P

Mahal ?

Nilpaurion Felagund 10-20-2003 08:22 PM

Right again, Turambar!

Updating...
1. A land in Gondor, two tens with and without me, lacking a head and a tail.
2. Mahal-He created the present moment ahead of cruelty.
3. Heren Istarion-They were many, but only three did something.
4. Epessë of the ocean of headgear.
5. Hidden elf ends in fish's top valley.

By the way, for the password, here's a clue: reverse Saucy...

Telchar 10-23-2003 04:36 PM

5) Ecthelion of the fountain... maybe?

Finwe 10-23-2003 06:18 PM

4)Gil-galad maybe?
