Finally

PRAISE: Give them this.
OLIPHAUNT: He doesn't fib.
EARENDIL: He is above the world, literally.
MAID: An unmarried woman, she.

THEODEN: Much to Robb's chagrin, he could be called 'King in the North' too.
IN: Just a preposition.
TOWER: A building that is also a boat.
LADS: Young boys, they.
ELBERETH: Wife of the God King.
SHIRE: A place of peace and joy.

Over to you.

1. Sometimes he's even called this. What larks!
2. She's a gift. Truly, she is!
3. Wax or oil changes at the end into a little glass.
4. Sounds like coffee, all in Quenya!
5. Ring ya lost? Where? The river?
6. Once camera specialists, they tried making printers. Disemvowelled, you heard, twice. Answer one is one, and so is eight! But take the third.
7. Mount this elvish element, and take the second.
8. Has hubris in one of his extremities?
9. He's a mime artist who's lost both his direction and his painter.
10. Name this county that Christ has deserted!
11. Heavenly pathway atop Mount Pelion. But initially compromised, it now gapes. Take the second.

What was the 'Robb' bit about, Urwen?

A reference to another book.

Urwen 03-09-2023 07:08 AM

5. Ringlo?

Urwen 03-09-2023 07:17 AM

2. Belladonna, if we go with german definition of 'gift'.

Which book? I did try google, but no luck.

No to both your guesses.

That one.

I don't get most of these...

Urwen 03-10-2023 05:19 AM

Except 10, which is Shire.

It isn't, I'm afraid.

A lot of the answers are just Elvish words. That should make it easier.

Urwen 03-10-2023 06:39 AM

2. Anna (elvish for gift)

Urwen 03-10-2023 06:40 AM

Which would make the password PALINDROMES

Urwen 03-10-2023 08:30 AM

5 is Nen, elvish for river (Nenya - ya)

Huinesoron 03-10-2023 08:54 AM

#7: "mount, this" -- ie, ORO, a Quenya word for a mountain or hill. Using the R in the password.

#9: if he's lost a painter, he's just a mime. If he's lost a direction too, he becomes MIM.

Have looked at Mount Pelion but even Shakespeare is not helping me this time.

You've compromised the wrong letter.

I have to wonder why are you explaining to us something we already know? I mean, if we give those answers, it's clear we figured out the cryptic element. We're not stupid, so please stop doing it every time...

Urwen 03-10-2023 02:58 PM

Anyway, the D one is KUDUK, from KODAK, so there is no need for you to explain the obvious again.

No, actually, it isn't always. It's courtesy to just give a brief mention of how you worked out the answer. I usually do. And to realise that explanations are for the benefit of everyone, not just the person who guessed the answer.

Well, there is a county in the Netherlands named EPE. (And yes, I reverse googled)

Urwen 03-11-2023 06:11 AM

Or maybe ESSE, if you interpret 'Christ had deserted' as simply removing the cross, or X, from the county of ESSEX.

#1 could be PIP(pin); I guess he engages in larks (or maybe lark = bird = peregrine). Then the I, I think "all in Quenya" is the straightest of straight clue and the answer is just ILLI (similar to Ilu- in Iluvatar). I'm not sure where the coffee comes in though.

'I'm generally just called Pippin, or even Pip.' - LOTR.
'What larks, Pip!' - Joe Gargery to Pip, the hero of 'Great Expectations.'

ILLY is a make of coffee - in the 'made and served in a café' sense, I think. I've seen adverts for it.

And over to Urwen.

Urwen 04-30-2023 04:32 AM

1. Usually the omens of death, but also helpful.
2. Article precedes twisted destruction. There they are.
3. Two different kinds, known by this single name.
4. Dwellings made of cloth are missing a head, for them.
5. Whether six legged or eight legged, they will eat you.

Huinesoron 05-05-2023 02:58 AM

#4: Tents - T = ENTS?

#1: Could this be RAVENS? They are ominous, but Roäc son of Carc was a handy translator on the slopes of the Lonely Mountain.

2. Ainur (a + ruin).

5. Spiders?

Password: RACES?

3. I'd say CALAQUENDI, but they are from 3 divisions of elves. Plus Thingol, I think.

Huinesoron 05-05-2023 08:29 AM

If #3 is a C, then it could be CHILDREN OF ILUVATAR, for both Elves and Men. (Elves being just as racist as Gondorians, the dwarves don't get that title despite their adoption by the One.)

I remember Tolkien messed up Shelob's anatomy somehow, but when did he give them six legs?

And Pervinca takes the round, as usual. :)

Pervinca Took 05-06-2023 01:07 PM

I especially liked the RAVENS clue, Urwen.

Here's one I made a while ago:

1. Poet hailed Queen Victoria in confusion?
2. Steamy and hot! Stir it well for her, and extract nothing.
3. Shift around raven country to arrive here?
4. Roast rat!? In consternation, find him!
5. Why, we ask, does she disturb the famous water?
6. Are they rhymefully quarrelin' under its branches?
7. Mud spelled backwards, according to the Harvard Lampoon.

Urwen 05-07-2023 07:16 AM

6. Laurelin?
7. Doom?

No to 'doom.' It refers to a chapter of something written by the Harvard Lampoon.
