Can a LEADER be an announcer? (I've a feeling this idea has come up on this thread before).

And good old German note H again, duly swallowed.

Not leader, and not H.

A: A confused announcer swallows a note, for her.
MAEGLIN: He is an IARPA program
TURIN: He is an Italian city.
MORWEN: Wander backwards, without a note? It's novel in reverse, for her
NERDANEL: She is knowledgeable, in turmoil, with a direction.

So, not mothers and sons either.

Pervinca Took 05-25-2019 02:57 AM

Oh ... AREDHEL, mothers and sons, but HERALD + E.

Urwen 05-25-2019 02:59 AM

AREDHEL: A confused announcer swallows a note, for her.
MAEGLIN: He is an IARPA program
TURIN: He is an Italian city.
MORWEN: Wander backwards, without a note? It's novel in reverse, for her
NERDANEL: She is knowledgeable, in turmoil, with a direction.

It's yours.

Pervinca Took 05-25-2019 11:55 AM

Sorry, a lot of things came up and I have been busy all day.

Here you go:

1. He messes up a college bedroom.
2. Register disgust, initially, but turn it around for him.
3. Frosty umpire upset him.
4. Annoy unsuspecting Noldor, initially, and cause trouble before finding him.
5. Ledger is all over the place, but gains direction and reveals her.

Urwen 05-26-2019 04:28 AM

1. Amrod (A+Dorm)

Pervinca Took 05-26-2019 04:32 AM

Indeed!

AMROD: He messes up a college bedroom.
2. Register disgust, initially, but turn it around for him.
3. Frosty umpire upset him.
4. Annoy unsuspecting Noldor, initially, and cause trouble before finding him.
5. Ledger is all over the place, but gains direction and reveals her.

Urwen 05-26-2019 04:35 AM

The only female I know who is tied to Amrod is Nerdanel, but ledger part invalidates that.

Urwen 05-26-2019 04:37 AM

The initials of 'annoy unsuspecting Noldor' are AUN.

Urwen 05-26-2019 04:58 AM

Oh, so that's how it is.

5. Haleth (Heath+L)

Urwen 05-26-2019 04:59 AM

Funny thing is, if Haleth had 's', I'd say that the password was Oaths.

Pervinca Took 05-26-2019 05:59 AM

Well done!

AMROD: He messes up a college bedroom.
2. Register disgust, initially, but turn it around for him.
3. Frosty umpire upset him.
4. Annoy unsuspecting Noldor, initially, and cause trouble before finding him.
HALETH: Ledger is all over the place, but gains direction and reveals her.

Actually, the 'Ledger' isn't really *all* over the place; only a little. Mea culpa.

Is this on the right track?

Urwen 05-26-2019 06:06 AM

There is no Tolkien term or name which begins with O and ends with A. I've checked.

Pervinca Took 05-26-2019 06:06 AM

It is, but you are using the initial of too many words.

Urwen 05-26-2019 06:10 AM

There aren't any five-letter Tolkien words which start with O and end with A, period.

Urwen 05-26-2019 06:12 AM

Ah, so you mean, we need initials of Annoy Noldor, ie. AN

Pervinca Took 05-26-2019 06:12 AM

No.

Not far off, though.

I'm going to be busy for the next couple of hours. Just letting you know.

Urwen 05-26-2019 06:17 AM

What about this?

Pervinca Took 05-26-2019 06:19 AM

Well, when you put 'period' on something, it generally means you're ending it. ;)

Maybe your sources aren't as exhaustive as you think.

And why not relax and guess some more clues first?

Urwen 05-26-2019 06:23 AM

All right then. If you can find a single five-letter word starting with O and ending with A on this page, then I will believe you.

Urwen 05-26-2019 06:24 AM

Anyway, I found 'olama'. Is that the password?

Pervinca Took 05-26-2019 06:35 AM

Not even Tolkien Gateway is exhaustive; I'm very familiar with it.

And no, it isn't.

Urwen 05-26-2019 06:36 AM

Then can you link me to a source which is?

Urwen 05-26-2019 06:41 AM

Or at least tell me which source you used to find the password, because I am stumped.

Pervinca Took 05-26-2019 07:07 AM

That would be as good as giving you the answer.

The password describes each of the answers. If you can work out what they have in common, then you can go looking for the password.

Urwen 05-26-2019 07:41 AM

So if the initials aren't AN, or AUN, are they UN?

Pervinca Took 05-26-2019 07:42 AM

UN is correct.

Urwen 05-26-2019 07:43 AM

I assume that Register = Note

Pervinca Took 05-26-2019 07:44 AM

Not note.

Urwen 05-26-2019 07:46 AM

4. Elurin (Rile+Un)

Urwen 05-26-2019 07:58 AM

I just had an epiphany

Password is ONONA, isn't it? (Quenya for 'one of the pair of twins')

Urwen 05-26-2019 08:10 AM

3. Folcred (Cold+Ref)

Urwen 05-26-2019 08:27 AM

And the last one is Elrond (Enrol+D)

Pervinca Took 05-26-2019 09:18 AM

AMROD: He messes up a college bedroom.
ELROND: Register disgust, initially, but turn it around for him.
FOLCRED: Frosty umpire upset him.
ELURIN: Annoy unsuspecting Noldor, initially, and cause trouble before finding him.
HALETH: Ledger is all over the place, but gains direction and reveals her.

THEME: TWIN-BORN CHARACTERS

(ONONA = SINDARIN FOR 'ONE OF A PAIR OF TWINS').

And over to Urwen, who sweeps the board again!

Urwen 05-26-2019 09:33 AM

Onona is a Quenya word. ;)

Urwen 05-26-2019 10:35 AM

New one

This one has a really tricky (and original) theme which I discovered by chance. I am not liable for any confusions that might occur while solving this.

1. Note a furuncle in disarray. A burglar appears.
2. Note, shortened hill, and what her race guards, in a muddle, for her.
3. A Norse God and a type of musical composition in a spin? See him.
4. Note a Spanish measurement for her.
5. Note a befuddled porcupine for him.

Pervinca Took 05-26-2019 11:48 AM

1. Bilbo.

Boil + b.

Urwen 05-26-2019 11:50 AM

BILBO: Note a furuncle in disarray. A burglar appears.
2. Note, shortened hill, and what her race guards, in a muddle, for her.
3. A Norse God and a type of musical composition in a spin? See him.
4. Note a Spanish measurement for her.
5. Note a befuddled porcupine for him.
