I can't seem to find the pattern. Grrr.... this is so frustrating!

Turambar 12-13-2003 09:46 PM

Is the Password FANTASIE ?

Celebrian 12-13-2003 11:09 PM

Aye, Sir, starin' ya in the face like the moon a' plenilune. Di'ya need hintses for the first'un then?
~~~~~
"He sang like a starling, hummed like a honey-bee, lilted to the fiddle, clasping his river-maid round her slender middle."
Turambar 12-14-2003 09:08 AM
What is "Fantasie" other than the German word for fantasy ?
Finwe 12-14-2003 10:57 AM
Hmmm... the only other one that I can think of for # 1 is: Fellowship.
Celebrian 12-14-2003 02:00 PM
Turambar:
In Bilbo's song Errantry, the term "Fantasie" is used as perhaps an imaginary land where the wanderer is "roaming over Belmarie and Thellamie and Fantasie".
According to Merriam-Webster the word is used in the same context as Fantasia, (ala Chernobog ), to denote a "musical composition free and fanciful in form."
Finwe: The Fellowship "grouping" was much nicer than the thematic one in this password puzzle.
Finwe 12-14-2003 02:02 PM
Fallen Kings?
Celebrian 12-14-2003 02:07 PM
Almost there! Look for another term.
Finwe 12-14-2003 05:34 PM
Failed Kings?
Celebrian 12-15-2003 11:05 PM
In a poor attempt to provide a tricksy question, I've only tricked myself! After finding finally a map of the Third Age with political boundaries marked, here is resubmitted the first clue in (hopefully) easier form so we can wrap up sooner:
One Minas Morgulian grouping left Butterbur drooping : Fell Riders
Two, a monster cache, a place of doom: Angband
Three, at this age what angst a tweener would be suffering?: Nwalme, torment, tengwar#20
Is four a mound, or stone, a place for bones? : Tombs (Denethor)
A fifth, a time in Bree to be mead a-drinking: Afterlithe, called "Mede" in Bree
The sixth is where there lived an Inkling: Sandfield Road, Oxford
Seven's a remedy for overheating: Isenmouthe (ice-in-mouth)
Guess eighth and poser end is soon, for it is a burial bloom: Evermind
Turambar has guessed the password, FANTASIE.
I'd act silly and say Forodwaith.
Celebrian 12-16-2003 07:24 AM
Hmmm... no, I don't think this group of dark persons were mentioned that far north.
Finwe 12-16-2003 06:51 PM
Fell Riders?
Celebrian 12-16-2003 08:53 PM
Verily so, Finwe! You are a good guesser!
Turambar, your turn to step up to the palantir.
Turambar? You there?
Nilpaurion Felagund 01-04-2004 12:47 AM
I've got a proposition:
It's been more than 10 days. Do you Passworders allow me to post my puzzle, or do we wait for Turambar?
Thank you!
Finwe 01-04-2004 02:19 PM
3) Half a ringbearer leads departing ones.
4) Assembly that is Quenya and father.
5) Chamber not outside, former Elven land.
6) Maiarin son of Aulendil.
7) Food-man of the Third Company.
Good luck!
The Saucepan Man 01-04-2004 09:47 PM
#2 Earendil: Ea (the Universe) + rend (tore) + il (ill/sick).
#5 Hollin: Holl (Hall/Chamber) + in (not outside).
Nilpaurion Felagund 01-04-2004 10:00 PM
7) Targon?
The Saucepan Man 01-05-2004 06:49 PM
#1 ëora or ëoran? Words found in Númenórë or Angamandi, possibly a unit of measurement in Rohan?
Firefoot 01-05-2004 07:24 PM
4) Elrond?
Nilpaurion Felagund 01-05-2004 10:11 PM
Turambar 01-06-2004 10:22 AM
Gwaihir the Windlord 01-06-2004 10:23 PM
Is three possibly just Frodo?
Finwe 01-07-2004 06:40 PM
3) Banner?
I remember reading somewhere that the original, Westron version of "Samwise" was "Banazir," or at least I think the name in question was "Samwise."
Nilpaurion Felagund 01-07-2004 11:13 PM
Conn, Sonar. We have two torpedoes imbound. Range is...it missed! Both answers missed!
Heni 01-11-2004 12:54 PM
#4: Fingon?
Finwe 01-11-2004 01:58 PM
# 3: Fingon (departing ones)
# 4: fassë (father + assembly)
Heni 01-11-2004 02:09 PM
I meant of course #3: Fingon... But all honour to Finwë if this is correct.
Firefoot 01-11-2004 07:56 PM
3) Cirdan?
Finwe 01-11-2004 07:59 PM
3) Ingwë?
Finwe 01-11-2004 08:00 PM
3) Ingwë?
Nilpaurion Felagund 01-11-2004 08:10 PM
Let us clarify #3 and #4:
3. The departing ones is the straight clue, and the Ringbearer mentioned has exactly an even number of letters. Which ring? It'll be yours, if you want to...
*eeew*
4. That is really not a "cryptic clue," but a proper statement with two quotation marks removed. Put the quotation marks in the proper place, and the answer will hit you like a precision-guided Hellfire.
If you didn't notice, all your answers were shot down by my Phalanx...
