I guess you won't. Very well, then.

Urwen 07-20-2022 04:32 AM

I don't really think anything can top Huey's password, but I will try and make something soon.

Pervinca Took 07-20-2022 10:22 AM

Sorry, Urwen. I have played on the Riddle thread a little in the past, but not much, and never on the other. I don't have enough headspace and my heart would not be in it. Especially in this heat and whilst looking after my dad, who is recovering from Covid.

I enjoy the Password thread because it's like doing cryptic crosswords, and doesn't feel like a chore.

Galadriel55 07-20-2022 11:37 AM

Personally, I thought that it's a great idea to revive some of these threads, and decided to take a day or two to come up with a good question. But since you've decided they won't continue, I won't bother.

A day or two? I've asked people to revive it in May, and it has been two months since then, not 'a day or two'.

Not to mention that you had almost six months to revive them before I reminded you. If you had truly wanted to revive them, you would have done so by now. Six months.

The Riddle thread has been inactive for almost a year since you posted. True, I have posted with the intention to revive it, but no one wanted to, so don't patronize me.

I didn't decide on a whim. I gave you plenty of time to continue them. Don't blame me when you couldn't be bothered to do so for a year.

Pervinca Took 07-20-2022 01:14 PM

Then why make a plea for them to be revived yesterday, if you were already sure no-one wanted to?

Urwen 07-20-2022 02:01 PM

Because I had hoped that someone would respond by now?

Pervinca Took 07-21-2022 03:52 AM

Maybe it's better that one thread continues than none, though? The multiple clues and 'crossword' nature of this one make it easier to keep it going.

I occasionally buy puzzle books, but find in the end that I only want to do the crosswords.

Urwen 07-22-2022 03:00 AM

I will try to make something soonish, as soon as this heat wave passes, if you all are willing to wait that long, of course.

A prime example of why one shouldn't go off the handle about waiting a few days for a response. ;)

Maybe, but it hasn't been a few days. It had been a year. Or specifically, it had been a year since the other threads had any new puzzle.

Pervinca Took 07-22-2022 06:53 AM

We're a good bunch of puzzlers who have a lot of fun. Let's not quarrel.

I can wait. In fact, I'm going to assemble the new fan and have an ice lolly!

Galadriel55 07-22-2022 01:49 PM

No quarrels, yes fans! Though we had a thunderstorm here a few days ago which broke the heat for a couple days.

Yes, threads sometimes fall silent. There are pages upon pages of silent threads collectig dust on the Downs, many have been sitting there for a lot longer than a year, these just happen to be the ones you want to revive - and it was only a couple days ago that you put out the call for revival, but you did not give anyone a chance to respond to your call. I was entirely willing to try revive one or two with you until you came out with your unilateral declaration. I still am willing to do so - not immediately, at least a few days from now because I am busy over the weekend - but it would be for the purpose of enjoying the puzzles, not for meeting some arbitrary deadline for intervals between posts. So if you can accept that posts may take several days in coming, we can restart another game. If not, then sorry, I'm out. And another thing - you have requested that the threads be closed. Now imagine what would have happened if a mod went ahead and did what you requested, even if you had the right to unilaterally shut down these threads. If your goal is to have them revived, I must say shutting them down achieves the exact opposite purpose. I am not participating in any of the games on such terms, where if the forum activity somehow does not meet your standards you call game over for everyone. If we can do this patiently, respectfully, and without ultimatums, let's do it. When it gets this way though, I lose all appetite for participating in the thread, and we go back to the initial dilemma. Please take down your last post in those threads, and we can try to return to the positive spirit of your initial request to revive them a few days ago.

Urwen 07-22-2022 02:42 PM

Then so shall it be done.

Urwen 07-29-2022 06:01 AM

I am still looking for a password.

Pervinca Took 07-29-2022 11:20 AM

I can help, if you like. I have some ready.

Urwen 07-29-2022 12:21 PM

Give me some more days. If I can't find any, you can take over then.

Pervinca Took 07-29-2022 02:29 PM

No problem.

Urwen 07-30-2022 05:55 AM

And I just came up with one.

1. Distant numeral is confused for him.
2. Here, endless loss combines with endless returning rage.
3. The Sun maiden's name, slightly confused, reveals her.
4. A summit of fate, it is.
5. Before the girl without end, it is revealed.

Galadriel55 07-30-2022 08:03 AM

3. Aerin?

Urwen 07-30-2022 12:16 PM

1. Distant numeral is confused for him.
2. Here, endless loss combines with endless returning rage.
AERIN: The Sun maiden's name, slightly confused, reveals her.
4. A summit of fate, it is.
5. Before the girl without end, it is revealed.

Pervinca Took 07-30-2022 04:28 PM

4. Mount Doom, or Orodruin?

2. LOSGAR.

Is the password FLAME?

5. ERELAS, the fourth beacon. ERE + LAS(S).

Galadriel55 07-30-2022 05:13 PM

If password is FLAME, then 1 is FEANOR: far + one.

Urwen 07-30-2022 06:03 PM

FEANOR: Distant numeral is confused for him.
LOSGAR: Here, endless loss combines with endless returning rage.
AERIN: The Sun maiden's name, slightly confused, reveals her.
MOUNT DOOM: A summit of fate, it is.
ERELAS: Before the girl without end, it is revealed.

I wanted to include Lalaith, but that would've been too far-fetched. Anyway, over to Pervinca.

Pervinca Took 07-30-2022 06:15 PM

Could work poetically for the fever that probably killed her?

I didn't notice the 'confused' in the F clue - got FAR but was trying FARAMIR (almost burned) and Roman numerals - but I was still left with AR or AIR. ;)

1. Minor Shakespearean lass loses her head twice to join a citrus fruit for her.
2. Swingy bit of clock loses hesitation, gains direction and note, and moves about a bit to reveal him.
3. Tolkien exclaims, elvishly, and creates him from a muddle?
4. She’s found in an unethical situation.
5. Oh, thanks, we hear for him!
6. He sounds a bit like a sort of weedkiller, but exclusively for banana plants!
7. Giant spider – mutilated, then nursed? Now see him: whole, and regal.
8. That toerag Norman is hiding him, I swear!

Urwen 07-31-2022 04:02 AM

8. Ragnor

Urwen 07-31-2022 05:07 AM

Well, coincidentally, 1 includes my favorite Shakespearean girl.

Bianca - Bi + Lime gives us Ancalime.

Urwen 07-31-2022 05:20 AM

2. Penlod, maybe. Pendulum - um = Pendul. If we replace u with O and move the order a bit, we get Penlod.

Or maybe Pengolodh, if we add Go and H to Penlod.

Pervinca Took 07-31-2022 09:54 AM

There is more than one Bianca in Shakespeare - which play were you thinking of?

Pervinca Took 07-31-2022 09:57 AM

Not quite there on No. 2. You are right to take away UM, but pendulum has two U's, so it keeps one of them.

Huinesoron 08-01-2022 06:14 AM

Is 7 Arago(g) (mutilated) + Registered Nurse = ARAGORN?

hS

Password: Apanonar, possibly?

Urwen 08-01-2022 03:40 PM

5. Ohtar?

Pervinca Took 08-01-2022 03:52 PM

Both correct, Urwen, but my phone is about to uncharge ....
