2. Silwen?
|
Nope, but you got the girl part right, now translate flame. Also, I forgot one letter

Is there a river called Sirion? (Sir + ion).

Oh ... The man of stature one that I thought was SIRION seems to have disappeared.
|
Yup, it was unneeded, which I realized when you answered. There were two S's when there was supposed to be one.
|
SIL does mean flame! ;)
So does MAR. Question is, is there a Tolkien character called NARWEN, or is it just a Tolkien fan name? |
Hint: *points to self*
|
Urwen?
|
CEORL:Carbon precedes confused knowledge
URWEN: Flame girl 3. An accursed jewel SHAGRAT: Reversed wound meets a rodent for him 6. Confused bullfighting cry for him 7. Leader of sea-farers FRODO: Note precedes confused entrance for a hero 8. Dark girl is the enemy of darkness 9. Reversed yell precedes a substance made from carbon RIAN: Direction precedes male name for her 11. Bleak meets an article for him 12. He shares his name with a Roman emperor 13. Reversed cut-off way for him 14. He keeps the beverage Yes, apparently UR also means flame/fire in elvish. |
Curse Of Morgoth?
I went back to Jim Allan's 'An Introduction To Elvish' and 'ur' was listed as heat/hot, I think. |
And maybe Morwen for 8? I can't remember why she's the enemy of darkness, although her family all opposed Melkor, of course.

Grima for the bleak one. I went through lots of synonyms for bleak, and the Elvish, but forgot grim.
Shagrat could be seen as a victim of Morgoth. And Frodo was a victim of his chief servant. |
And OTHO was a Roman Emperor.
|
Holdwine for the beverage keeper?
|
E for Eol.
Hazard a guess - Osse for the seafarer leader? For some reason, the first thing I thought of when looking at the T clue was "dead end", and when I reversed that I got "end dead". :D |
6 is Olwë. leader of the Teleri in Aman.
|
Ohtar for the carbon clue?
|
CEORL:Carbon precedes confused knowledge
URWEN: Flame girl R:An accursed jewel SHAGRAT: Reversed wound meets a rodent for him EOL: Confused bullfighting cry for him OLWE: Leader of sea-farers FRODO: Note precedes confused entrance for a hero MORWEN: Dark girl is the enemy of darkness OHTAR: Reversed yell precedes a substance made from carbon RIAN: Direction precedes male name for her GRIMA: Bleak meets an article for him OTTO: He shares his name with a Roman emperor T: Reversed cut-off way for him HOLDWINE: He keeps the beverage Well, they were all victims, but guess who Curse of Morgoth was cast upon? |
Turin, but apart from rut backwards I can't make it work.
|
The accursed jewel isn't the Ring, is it?
|
But it can.
CEORL:Carbon precedes confused knowledge URWEN: Flame girl RING: An accursed jewel SHAGRAT: Reversed wound meets a rodent for him EOL: Confused bullfighting cry for him OLWE: Leader of sea-farers FRODO: Note precedes confused entrance for a hero MORWEN: Dark girl is the enemy of darkness OHTAR: Reversed yell precedes a substance made from carbon RIAN: Direction precedes male name for her GRIMA: Bleak meets an article for him OTTO: He shares his name with a Roman emperor T: Reversed cut-off way for him HOLDWINE: He keeps the beverage The last one isn't Turin, but his father's brother's son. |
Oh, Tutor. Route backwards with the E cut off.
|
TUOR. I need to find out how to turn off Autocorrect.

By the way, Galadriel55 here could attest to what I did in my crazy era. with my namesake in particular. |

The emperor is Otho, though, isn't it, not Otto? I don't think there's a hobbit called Otto in the family trees.
Here's another one: 1. ‘Oo, those awful ...!’ Quite translated. 2. Ancient people of divine spirit? 3. Two notes assemble to laugh. 4. Finesse changes note for a resplendent thing. |
3. Lalaith?....
|
No, but very close.
(There's nothing to indicate that it's a person). ;) |
2 Maia? Just because ancient people made me think of Mayans?
|
Excellent answer, but not the right one here.
|
Lala then?
|
Yes. The verb 'to laugh.'
|
1. ‘Oo, those awful ...!’ Quite translated.
2. Ancient people of divine spirit? LALA: Two notes assemble to laugh. 4. Finesse changes note for a resplendent thing. |
HINT: This password is rather similar to my last one ....
|
I tried googling the clue for #1 and I got a bunch of results for "OO, those awful orcs".
|
Oh, sorry ... I did wonder if I had remembered the wrong adjective, and I had. :(
Still, apply the instruction in the second sentence of the clue, and hey presto! 'Oo, those awful orcs' is the title of a well-known early criticism of LOTR. |
