7. Frodo.

Urwen 09-03-2015 01:48 PM

CEORL: Carbon precedes confused knowledge

Pervinca Took 09-03-2015 01:54 PM

2. Silwen?

Urwen 09-03-2015 02:00 PM

Nope, but you got the girl part right, now translate flame. Also, I forgot one letter

CEORL:Carbon precedes confused knowledge
2. Flame girl
3. An accursed jewel
SHAGRAT: Reversed wound meets a rodent for him
5. A man of stature meets a negative atom for a flower

FRODO: Note precedes confused entrance for a hero
9. Dark girl is the enemy of darkness
10. Reversed yell precedes a substance made from carbon
RIAN: Direction precedes male name for her
12. Bleak meets an article for him
13. He shares his name with a Roman emperor
14. Reversed cut-off way for him
15. He keeps the beverage

It should actually be like this.

Pervinca Took 09-03-2015 02:01 PM

Is there a river called Sirion? (Sir + ion).

Yes. Chief river in Beleriand of old.

I seem to have made two mistakes in clue placement, hopefully there won't be any more.....sorry.....

Pervinca Took 09-03-2015 02:19 PM

Oh ... The man of stature one that I thought was SIRION seems to have disappeared.

Urwen 09-03-2015 02:25 PM

Yup, it was unneeded, which I realized when you answered. There were two S's when there was supposed to be one.

Pervinca Took 09-03-2015 02:25 PM

SIL does mean flame! ;)

So does MAR.

Question is, is there a Tolkien character called NARWEN, or is it just a Tolkien fan name?

Urwen 09-03-2015 02:27 PM

Hint: *points to self*

Pervinca Took 09-03-2015 02:31 PM

Urwen?

14. He keeps the beverage

Yes, apparently UR also means flame/fire in elvish.

Pervinca Took 09-03-2015 03:23 PM

Curse Of Morgoth?

I went back to Jim Allan's 'An Introduction To Elvish' and 'ur' was listed as heat/hot, I think.

Pervinca Took 09-03-2015 03:27 PM

And maybe Morwen for 8? I can't remember why she's the enemy of darkness, although her family all opposed Melkor, of course.

That's exactly why she is an enemy of darkness.

CEORL:Carbon precedes confused knowledge
URWEN: Flame girl
R:An accursed jewel
SHAGRAT: Reversed wound meets a rodent for him
E: Confused bullfighting cry for him
O: Leader of sea-farers
FRODO: Note precedes confused entrance for a hero
MORWEN: Dark girl is the enemy of darkness
O: Reversed yell precedes a substance made from carbon
RIAN: Direction precedes male name for her
G: Bleak meets an article for him
O: He shares his name with a Roman emperor
T: Reversed cut-off way for him
H: He keeps the beverage

Two of the clues I used are victims of the password, even if only one actually suffered from it........Originally I wanted the password to be 'children of hurin' with all of the names from that book used as clues, but there was no way I could make that work

Pervinca Took 09-03-2015 04:10 PM

Grima for the bleak one. I went through lots of synonyms for bleak, and the Elvish, but forgot grim.

Shagrat could be seen as a victim of Morgoth. And Frodo was a victim of his chief servant.

Pervinca Took 09-03-2015 04:19 PM

And OTHO was a Roman Emperor.

Pervinca Took 09-03-2015 04:24 PM

Holdwine for the beverage keeper?

Galadriel55 09-03-2015 04:44 PM

E for Eol.

Hazard a guess - Osse for the seafarer leader?

For some reason, the first thing I thought of when looking at the T clue was "dead end", and when I reversed that I got "end dead". :D

The Squatter of Amon Rûdh 09-03-2015 04:52 PM

6 is Olwë. leader of the Teleri in Aman.

Galadriel55 09-03-2015 05:27 PM

Ohtar for the carbon clue?

Urwen 09-03-2015 11:13 PM

CEORL:Carbon precedes confused knowledge
URWEN: Flame girl
R:An accursed jewel
SHAGRAT: Reversed wound meets a rodent for him
EOL: Confused bullfighting cry for him
OLWE: Leader of sea-farers
FRODO: Note precedes confused entrance for a hero
MORWEN: Dark girl is the enemy of darkness
OHTAR: Reversed yell precedes a substance made from carbon
RIAN: Direction precedes male name for her
GRIMA: Bleak meets an article for him
OTTO: He shares his name with a Roman emperor
T: Reversed cut-off way for him
HOLDWINE: He keeps the beverage

Well, they were all victims, but guess who Curse of Morgoth was cast upon?

Pervinca Took 09-04-2015 02:20 AM

Turin, but apart from rut backwards I can't make it work.

Pervinca Took 09-04-2015 02:31 AM

The accursed jewel isn't the Ring, is it?

Urwen 09-04-2015 02:48 AM

But it can.

CEORL:Carbon precedes confused knowledge
URWEN: Flame girl
RING: An accursed jewel
SHAGRAT: Reversed wound meets a rodent for him
EOL: Confused bullfighting cry for him
OLWE: Leader of sea-farers
FRODO: Note precedes confused entrance for a hero
MORWEN: Dark girl is the enemy of darkness
OHTAR: Reversed yell precedes a substance made from carbon
RIAN: Direction precedes male name for her
GRIMA: Bleak meets an article for him
OTTO: He shares his name with a Roman emperor
T: Reversed cut-off way for him
HOLDWINE: He keeps the beverage

The last one isn't Turin, but his father's brother's son.

Pervinca Took 09-04-2015 03:35 AM

Oh, Tutor. Route backwards with the E cut off.

Pervinca Took 09-04-2015 03:40 AM

TUOR. I need to find out how to turn off Autocorrect.

Urwen 09-04-2015 05:39 AM

And it's yours. By the way, Galadriel55 here could attest to what I did in my crazy era. with my namesake in particular.

*Hides under a rock* Looking for G55? No, she's not home. Yes, I'm sure. Come back tomorrow... or the day after... but never works fine as well...

:p;)

Pervinca Took 09-04-2015 01:26 PM

The emperor is Otho, though, isn't it, not Otto? I don't think there's a hobbit called Otto in the family trees.

Here's another one:

1. ‘Oo, those awful ...!’ Quite translated.
2. Ancient people of divine spirit?
3. Two notes assemble to laugh.
4. Finesse changes note for a resplendent thing.

Galadriel55 09-04-2015 02:44 PM

3. Lalaith?....

Pervinca Took 09-04-2015 02:47 PM

No, but very close.

(There's nothing to indicate that it's a person). ;)

Mithalwen 09-04-2015 03:47 PM

2 Maia? Just because ancient people made me think of Mayans?

Pervinca Took 09-04-2015 04:31 PM

Excellent answer, but not the right one here.

Galadriel55 09-04-2015 06:19 PM

Lala then?

Pervinca Took 09-04-2015 06:24 PM

Yes. The verb 'to laugh.'

Pervinca Took 09-04-2015 06:28 PM

1. ‘Oo, those awful ...!’ Quite translated.
2. Ancient people of divine spirit?
LALA: Two notes assemble to laugh.
4. Finesse changes note for a resplendent thing.

Pervinca Took 09-06-2015 09:41 AM

HINT: This password is rather similar to my last one ....

Galadriel55 09-06-2015 09:45 AM

I tried googling the clue for #1 and I got a bunch of results for "OO, those awful orcs".

Pervinca Took 09-06-2015 10:00 AM

Oh, sorry ... I did wonder if I had remembered the wrong adjective, and I had. :(

Still, apply the instruction in the second sentence of the clue, and hey presto!

'Oo, those awful orcs' is the title of a well-known early criticism of LOTR.
