Famously, Long John Silver has a wooden leg; I wonder if that's the sort of thing we should be thinking about?

Are there any pirates in Middle-earth? :D

A clue I wrote recently made me see that, with Earnil also in my arsenal of clues/answers and still waiting for an outing, I might be able to construct a whole puzzle around silly clues. So my 'Oh Gawd, what further themes *are* there?' dilemma was solved, or at least postponed.

EDIT: Long John Silver would be *far* too sensible an answer.

You wrote a myriad of clues recently.....

Pervinca Took 06-06-2019 07:27 AM

Though pedant proud this setter be,
To overload a clue, e’en she
Unwilling is, so therefore, peers,
For some of these, LOOK TO YOUR EARS! :-

SARN(IE) FORD: Crossing where people eat their butties – before that is lost.
???I???: He’s a seafaring amputee! Ouch!
LAIQUENDI: These elves (and the lost boys) adore her.
THE FLOATING LOG: This pub has decidedly dodgy toilets.
YAMMER: Something you probably do if Rankin-Bass orcs are driving you.
CURUNIR: Wee dog loses direction, but prances and pivots until he’s found!
BAMFURLONG: Distance a horse can travel on its posterior? Vowel shift! Here it is!
TURGON: An unsung hero, because he evidently unblocked the toilet in Gondolin, even without being noted for it!
EARNIL: Dunno how this geezer keeps his specs on, or stops his helm falling over his nose!
???S???: Kanga’s baby’s bogies are projectile for him!

PASSWORD & THEME: SILLY CLUES.

The answer is human/oid.

The amputee is not.

Urwen 06-06-2019 07:33 AM

Parrot?

Pervinca Took 06-06-2019 08:51 AM

No.

The parrot was not the amputee! Long John Silver was, and he is not the answer either!

Urwen 06-06-2019 08:57 AM

I heard this joke once:

'I have a wooden leg named Smith'.

Relevant?

Huinesoron 06-06-2019 08:58 AM

... it's not Fingon the mutilated fish again, is it?

hS

Urwen 06-06-2019 08:58 AM

Or perhaps a goat? Bill Ferny?

Urwen 06-06-2019 08:59 AM

Mwahahahaha!

Urwen 06-06-2019 09:02 AM

You landlubbers have no idea how hard it was for poor Fin-gone.

Urwen 06-06-2019 09:05 AM

Feanor was a good diplomat. When he came to Alqualonde, he told Olwe 'blah blah blah'. And Olwe said unto him 'blah blah blah'.

For some of these, LOOK TO YOUR EARS! :-

SARN(IE) FORD: Crossing where people eat their butties – before that is lost.
FINGON: He’s a seafaring amputee! Ouch!
LAIQUENDI: These elves (and the lost boys) adore her.
THE FLOATING LOG: This pub has decidedly dodgy toilets.
YAMMER: Something you probably do if Rankin-Bass orcs are driving you.

PASSWORD & THEME: SILLY CLUES.

I prefer the mutilated fish version of that clue. Cruel as it sounds, I think it's sillier. But I had already used it. Still, it's the reason this puzzle has happened.

Now, folks, come on. What are bogies/boogers essentially MADE of?

Urwen 06-06-2019 10:18 AM

Slime?

Pervinca Took 06-06-2019 10:18 AM

More slangy than slime.

Urwen 06-06-2019 10:20 AM

Mucus?

Urwen 06-06-2019 10:22 AM

Or snot?

Pervinca Took 06-06-2019 10:24 AM

YES! SNOT!

https://youtu.be/k8uweOXgnak

SO, essentially, the bogies of Kanga's baby are:

ROO SNOT.

Make that projectile.

hS

Why yes! The Pirates of Pelargir! But they never attack orphans.

Urwen 06-06-2019 10:31 AM

Missile, rocket, shell, arrow, bullet, dart, rocket, torpedo, bomb, shaft, shot, spear, impelling.

Pervinca Took 06-06-2019 10:32 AM

No, not like that. :D

Urwen 06-06-2019 10:35 AM

Like what, then?

Pervinca Took 06-06-2019 10:37 AM

If someone has projectile vomiting, it goes everywhere, right?

Urwen 06-06-2019 11:27 AM

Yes. So it's all over the place?

Pervinca Took 06-06-2019 12:15 PM

Precisely.

Urwen 06-06-2019 12:16 PM

Roo snot all over?

Pervinca Took 06-06-2019 12:17 PM

Yes.

Urwen 06-06-2019 12:27 PM

I don't see it.....

Pervinca Took 06-06-2019 12:29 PM

What is 'all over' or 'projectile' trying to *indicate?*

Urwen 06-06-2019 12:32 PM

Oh wait, I do. Very clever.

Soronto (Roo+Snot).

How did I do?

Pervinca Took 06-06-2019 12:36 PM

Though pedant proud this setter be,

PASSWORD & THEME: SILLY CLUES.

Yes, Soronto is made of baby kangaroo snot. Who knew? :D

I enjoyed that. :D

And Urwen, you did very well. But since Huey guessed the password this time, it's over to him, at least to choose who does the next one.

Urwen 06-06-2019 12:44 PM

But will he choose to take over or not, that is the question. ;)

Huinesoron 06-06-2019 12:58 PM

I have one ready, but can't post it until tomorrow. So if you're okay to wait 14 hours or so...? :) Fun password, Pervinca, and good working with you, Urwen!

hS

Urwen 06-06-2019 01:03 PM

I am okay with that, but may we know why can't you just copy-paste it if you already have it prepared? It takes all of fifteen seconds, give or take.

Pervinca Took 06-06-2019 01:17 PM

Probably the same reason I sometimes can't ... they're on a Word document on my laptop, which during the week might be locked in my cupboard at work, and I mostly post from my phone, which is always with me.

Huinesoron 06-07-2019 02:23 AM

Precisely that, Pervinca (though in this case it was a Text document on a desktop).

Since tomorrow is now upon us, here you go:

1. West, briefly a ring-slinger, is attending.
2. Sounds like my smile goes from right to left.
3. One step on from a dwarf impaled by two thirds of a spear.
4. No light, and it sounds like no Hell either; it's all backwards!
5. Mother jumbled up the marbles.
6. A crazy omlette row? Never let it end.
7. Take elements of two backwards countries, then add Earth (well, stone) and Air.

For Reasons, I'm going to need to insist on at least two-thirds of a clue being explained with each answer.

hS

Urwen 06-07-2019 02:36 AM

Marbles, as in wit, or as in round objects?

Urwen 06-07-2019 02:41 AM

6. Maeglin (Ma+Eg+Lin). Mad + Egg + Line with the last letters taken away.

Finally, someone who isn't me has used Maeglin as the clue! :D

Urwen 06-07-2019 03:22 AM

Oh, wait, if all the clues are what I think they are, then you're one sneaky person.

Urwen 06-07-2019 03:25 AM

2 is also Maeglin (Mae + Grin - R + L)

So is 1 (Mae (West) + LING)

So is the password.
