Is the password an elvish phrase meaning ENEMIES OF MORGOTH?

NOTTO can mean enemy.

Something ending in MORGOTH, anyway.

It is an Elvish phrase, but it doesn't mean that.

Well, I've forgotten to put one in now and then. Apologies for assuming you might not be 100% perfect all the time.

Of course she is; just ask Turin, he'll tell you! "All the warmth of his heart was for [Urwen] his sister" and all that.

Shame, 'cos I was really pleased at spotting Cuthalion. Too much of a chemist for my own good, clearly. :)

#9: First thought was Anarion, but then I remembered Turin's buddy who got unceremoniously clonked over the head while stalking Glaurung. A quick look in CoH shows me he's HUNTHOR, ie Hun[s] + Thor.

Urwen 07-17-2021 03:47 AM

So, uh, you need some help?

Pervinca Took 07-17-2021 06:19 AM

Looks like it.

Urwen 07-17-2021 09:22 AM

Well, some books have more than one name. That is your password hint, and when you solve the password, solving the rest of the clues will be easier.

Pervinca Took 07-17-2021 03:21 PM

Well, 'Morgoth's Ring' is like another version of 'The Silmarillion.' I can't find a way to translate that kind of ring and fit it into the password, though. More of a job for Huey, perhaps?

Urwen 07-17-2021 03:24 PM

Nope, not that book. There are two other books featuring all the character's you've guessed so far...

Pervinca Took 07-17-2021 05:06 PM

Maybe the theme is the CURSE of Morgoth.

I think they're probably all in the NARN.

Urwen 07-18-2021 04:12 AM

Good. Now, what's the elvish word for curse?

Pervinca Took 07-18-2021 05:44 AM

Huta or racco.

I think it's the same word, actually: 'rach' is the (possibly consonant-mutated) Sindarin word, which looks like a cognate to a Quenya 'racco' (though, full disclosure, I can't find 'racco' anywhere).

Anyway, yes, apparently the Narn is also known as the Narn e-'Rach Morgoth, or Tale of the Curse of Morgoth.

So... #4, I think 'returning' tells us that we need the final letter, and Morwe [the male Avarin leader] + N[orth] = MORWEN.

... except we've... already got Morwen. Um. Is 'Salle' a male name, to give NELLAS?

Pervinca Took 07-20-2021 08:50 AM

How about S + ALLEN?

Sure, I guess we could go with the solution that makes sense instead... :p

#6: Very embarassed not to remember what goes on and on... SADOR.

#2: I was wracking my brains for way to get Finduilas from this, but totally forgot Turin's... aunt? Cousin? One of those. AERIN basically starts with 'air', though I can't make either IN or (rearranged) EN into 'right now'.

hS

Pervinca Took 07-20-2021 09:34 AM

I got as far as you with AERIN, but never, never thought of ROADS!

Pervinca Took 07-20-2021 09:38 AM

Oh ... RAGNIR from RARING?

Urwen 07-20-2021 12:45 PM

NIENOR: Something that knights say, England and a conjuction, all for her.
AERIN: Air, right now. In disarray, she is there.
RAGNIR: He is full of enthusiasm (Rearranged)
NELLAS: Returning direction and a male name lead to her.

ELWE: Spanish article and pronoun form an Elven king.

RODAS: In a mirror, things that go on and on reveal him.
ANDROG: God ran in circles. He appears.
CUTHALION: Transition (movie-wise) an evil robot and a particle come together for him.
HUNTHOR: An ancient nomad tribe, sans direction, and a Norse God. For someone done in by a rock.

MORWEN: Confused ladies find a way, for her.
ORLEG: Maeglin loses a head, for him.
R: A preposition between a long and short direction. It's all in disarray, and backwards. For him.
GETHRON: Note a throne in disarray, for him.
ORODRETH: An entrance, an article and a direction. All in the muddle. For a king.
TURIN: Boaz's wife returns endlessly. Add a preposition for a tragic hero.
HURIN: An element precedes muddled destruction, for him.

Huinesoron 07-21-2021 02:24 AM

That last R...

A preposition between a long and short direction. It's all in disarray, and backwards. For him.

'backwards' suggests the R is the final letter. I think it likely that the R is the 'short direction' - I can't easily come up with either prepositions or directions which include the letter!

I think the structure is [direction written in full] + [preposition] + R, with a bit of scrambling between the two words. But I haven't been able to come up with a name that fits.

hS

Pervinca Took 07-21-2021 02:29 AM

Tried NE and SE and ON to no avail.

Maybe the longer direction is an order. Something like GO or DO.

Urwen 07-21-2021 05:24 PM

Nope.

I hope this applied only to Pervinca's guesses, because I think it's Gethron's buddy GRITHNIR, who neatly fits the structure I described in my post. He's RIGHT + IN + R, with the first two words scrambled, and then run backwards for the R.
