Christianity is (as I'm sure you all know) far more than church membership.
Re: Re:Hey does anyone know.....

I'd love to know the answers, if anyone knows them!

I don't think anyone is really seeking a debate here in this Forum. I don't think that either Lindil or I are even seeking a debate in our own respective Forums. (Though I'm sure we would entertain serious questions...)

Nevertheless, curiosity about such matters is an integral part of who Christians are, and I resist any attempts to quench that. I suggest that if you are uncomfortable in dealing with such matters, that you decline to engage in whatever you find debatable.

Most of us here are Americans, or of English speaking backgrounds, or are from nations of great Christian heritage. We are used to speaking about such matters forthrightly and chafe at unnatural restrictions to speech.

While I agree that this is not the forum for high tempered debates about religious matters, it certainly is a forum for information about the actors and other individuals associated with the movie. Information about religious faith is fair game!

So, to bring the topic back on track, if anyone comes to learn anything about the Faith (or lack thereof) of any of the principals of the movies, please do post that here in this topic!

~~~God & Country!~~~
Re: Re:I think I figured out Monaghans faith......
Everyone has there own path. Think of this, Suldadhel. If your parents raised you as a Muslim, would you think that Christianity was stupid? Most likely you would. I am Catholic myself, because I was brought up in a Catholic family. While Athiests are more likely to join another religion, most of the time being Christianity, if you were brought up in a Athiest home, went to school and learned about evolution, and had some hard times in your life, you would probably not beleive in God. It bugs me to see people who are Athiests, because I think of how they are missing out on heaven, but you cannot change there beleifs, so I dont say anything.
Each religion has its own compelling parts, and if you are use to something, it is very hard to change.
Religous Hobbits
When trapped, say, at work, I steer clear of politics, religion, sexual orientation. But here, people can feel free to express themselves.
All the LOTR fans that I know personally are quite Christian (usually nondenominational). I don't picture the main characters of LOTR noting Sunday or any other day as a Sabath day, or of offering up prayers to be saved, or giving of tithes and offerings.
Boromir's funeral speaks for itself as far as a faith for Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas.
It seems clear in LOTR that JRRT was certainly spiritually minded...but then, he was an "Inkling" along with C.S.
Re: Religous Hobbits
Well the thing is Lion is that Tolkiens characters dont have religious services or any day thay call holy but that does'nt make you Christian, it only shows that you believe what is taught there and that you show yourself to be a follower of Christ, it's Christ as makes the Christain and Christ working through that person as makes the church, not Vise Versa.
That brings up the other thing I was going to say, LOTR characters are Christian in their additudes and in the way the books are written. The amazing thing is this, the people of Gondor and Rohan knew that there was someone out there trying to destroy the emblem of evil and the center of Evil it's self, so they had to trust that that Person whoever it was was going to get to Mordor and destroy whatever it was that he was going to destroy. So would'nt that count as faith, trusting in someone you cannot see?And what about Gandalf? He's a representation of Christ himself, what I mean is that Gandalf gave his life for his followers to escape and I defiantly think that that is a representation of Christ (and there's alot more that I cant write down coase I'm running out of time so I'll cut it short).
And what about the plot line itself?Good verses evil and good coming out on top because of one plan,one individual giving himself up for the rest of the world(I ment Frodo not Gollum), I mean how Christian is that?
So please remember that Christ Makes the Chruch by working in the Christian, going to church does'nt make you religious or does'nt make you a christian,It does'nt get you to heaven anymore then Baptisim does, It's Christ as does all the work and there are plenty of representations of Christ in LOTR
Sam
Ps. Jesus was'nt "religious" in the Pharasiees sight, he did'nt do all that fancifull doo da stuff that they said you had to do to be right in the sight of God, he just OBEYED which is what we need to do as Christians we need to obey God and his directions for us, I think that's what makes us "religious"(well that is besides being a Christian yourself).
Do not meddle in the affairs of Dragons. It's kinda sad about McKellen, but, according to our own claims (which are way true ) then he's still God's creation, so some respect should be shown if it ever comes up.
Veering in a slightly less controversial direction ...
The actually characters in the book are somewhat religionless. This was Tolkien's intent. The main fault he found with traditional British folklore was that it was hopelessly intangled with Christianity. All the amalgamation of truth and fiction, Christianity and paganism irked him to the point of creating an entirely new reality, and an incredibly interesting one at that, I'm sure we'd all agree. Though I think some of Tolkien's perceptions about God come out in Iluvatar, the conception of him was to free the fact from folklore. Nothing, ya'll didn't already know, I'm sure...but I'm bored...
~ Elerrina ('Crowned with stars'; a name of Taniquetil; Only thing that wasn't taken) 'Many are the strange chances of the world,'said Mithrandir,'and help oft shall come from the hands of the weak when the Wise falter."
Uh oh >
I think my name has been tapped into, I did NOT write that last post.Whoe ever you are could you not do that again? You are really scaring this young hobbit,so tell me who you are and I'll be happy but if you dont go back to your original form dont say I did'nt tell you...nicely and if that is'nt nice enough I begs,and if that is'nt begging enough I hurts.
Not really but frankly I dont appreciate your barging in on MY name(and dont forget I have experience in sword work,and elven swords as well so please go away and leave the name sotshire to me).
Hey I can totally agree with you,but the amazing thing about LOTR is the fact that the good characters are infact Christian in some sense, Frodo is the strongest example. First off he gives himself up for others freedom, I kind of think of it this way. Before the Ring he was free but when he took it he KNEW darn well he could neve be free of it again,but taking on this comportable prision he takes it to a place that could kill him and destroys the evil villians power MAKES THOSE CAPTIVE FREE AGAIN. Now dont tell me THAT is'nt Christian.
And what about Gandalf. Going over the world trying to help those who would take him, finding the truth about the evil Ring and hellping with the burden and warning Frodo about it, being a leader to those who would follow, and now the climax,fighting a great demon greater then any other enemy save for Sauron and Melkor, killing the enemy, dieing and coming back three days later,and then BEING TRANSFORMED INTO A WONDERFULL BODY GANDALF THE WHITE, ok I hope this wont seem sacreligious or anything but I think that sounds ALLOT like Jesus himself.
and all the others remind me of normal christians vowed to follow Jesus where ever he sends.and Aragorn, he comes TOTALLY UNEXPECTED and shows the dirty Strider to be in truth Elendils heir. Oh wow talk about freak out session on the Hobbits part,talk about Jesus' returning figure.
Sam the ORIGIANL sam that is
Do not meddle in the affairs of Dragons. For you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.
Hi Sam! This is Sam! Actually my full name is Samwise Brandybuck, so no worries! How about Gollum? He is the perfect example for each one of us; twisted, evil beings, yet not beyond hope for redemption. Choose th Light!
P.S. It was not me who messed with your post.
"I will, Lord." said Tuor.
Hmmm I'm not too sure about that Sam (you know that is so weird I'm talking to my nick name but I'm not talking to me ) Gollum was doomed beyond hope,even Frodo who had undoubtedly a stronger will and who had owned the Ring for a less amount of time could'nt be free of it forever,so I think that Gollum was kind of doomed. It's funny but everything of importence in LOTR represents something, the Ring represents sin(notice how hard it is to let go of it when it has a hold on your life and how you seem never to let go of sin even after Jesus has gotten rid of it),and Frodo represents both us and Jesus. He was born with the future before him to HAVE the Ring(sin)and even after he had destroyed it he could not let go of the Ring's memory. And is'nt amazing that the peoples of Rohan the Shire,and Gondor were under Saurons(Satan) influnce and iron hand,but even though a small unoticeble character made his way to the heart of Saurons realm.
But I'm getting off of the point(Sam you are such a Ninnyhammer-I'm talking to myself S.Brandybuck-), Gollum is(how can I say this).Ok
I have to go
Time limit
Sam the ninnyhammer
Do not meddle in the affairs of Dragons.
Gollum is like those with the thorney ground in their heart, they recive the word but they let the things of the world choke the good seed,and the things of this world dont always mean clothes or cd players but they can also mean things that are worshipped in acess,in Gollums case it was the Ring. I think that if he had not been so overly worshippfull of the Ring then Frodo would have been able to reach him but he would not let the Ring go and it finely destroyed him. I'm not saying that things of the world are bad I mean some of them are but things like a cd player or makeup or money are'nt,what I mean is that you dont need to worship those things in ecess.Like if we have some sin in our life and it keeps on growing till it consumes us then we are like Gollum,wretched in Gods sight, pittiful to the other people around us,and sooner or later we'll get destroyed or caught or whatever. That is why it's som importent to let go of the "Ring" in our life because sooner or later we'll end up wretched and pitiable.
But then he could also represent those who have not come to Jesus, needing a shepard to lead them letting sin and care of the world to overwhelm them,and it's up to us to show Jesus' love to them,just like he showed the adultress compassion and love, we need to show them that Jesus' lives within us,and through loving them we will show that.
I hope this has not overoffended anyone on the Barrow Downs if it has please tell me so I can set things straight with you, I dont like offending anybody.*gets up from sitting face to face with the other Sam at the hearth,bows and with a small sheepish grin walks out the door singing the bath song*
sing hey for the bath at close of...
Samwise at your service (I like winking)
Do not meddle in the affairs of Dragons. For you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.
From way back...
Sam: re Monaghan's accent: Ack! How to explain English accents?
My memory must be bad. I've seen Monaghan in a tv series "Hetty Wainthropp Investigates", but I can't remember what he sounds like. (I would, as a v. quick guess, say Yorkshire, but that's from scraps of the rest of the show that I recall, which struck me as being Yorkshire-ish. Don't take me word for it.)
I just spent 15 minutes looking for sound files, but can't find anything. Sorry.
As for religion: did you mean 'practising catholic' or 'eenie-meenie-miny-mo on the census form catholic'? (if that made sense?) Just curious.
Re: From way back...
I read somewhere that for the first time England in its census had an 'other field for religon and a bunch of Star Wars fans were putting 'Jedi' in the hopes that if they got 10,000 Jedi, it would be declared an official religon of England.
"I will, Lord." said Tuor.
