View Full Version : Return of the King Extended Edition Support Group! (Why not?)

'Twas recently suggested to me that I get a head start on the support group for the Return of the King extended edition. As far as I know, it's still a good year or so away, but we might as well keep each other company. Everyone gobbled up the food from the RotK support group, so I don't have any yet, but we don't want to do goofy posts like that anyway.
The rumor I've heard thus far concerns the fact that the movie itself, counting extended scenes, will be nearly five hours long!! As for scenes we will see, I think most of them have already been discussed: The Mouth of Sauron is one of the biggest, in my opinion. Aragorn looking in the Palantir, some of these scenes.
Anyway, has anyone heard release date rumors? One rumor spoke of a RotK DVD release date (wimpy edition) in May!

in support group do you mean things we definitly want to see in the extended edition or something totally different?

Hello? What about Saurman and Grima! The two who were mercifully cut out of the theatrical edition.
Oh and I am also hoping for a scene where the Fellowship says goodbye and goes their separate ways. And maybe an ending with parts of the appendices included. Oh, and how about the Crossroads... I could go on, and on, and on.
I really can't wait for this EE. This is the one that I am probably the most excited about. Just because there is so much more great material that they have, but they didn't include.
All I have really heard about the EE is that it may come out at the same time as the others, in early November, or that it may come out in August. But it is going to take awhile. They still have to do the extra CGI shots, the editing, the music, and the putting together of the documentaries and extras. I have also heard of the possibility of multiple endings (I heard something about PJ shooting five different endings), and of course the ever present rumor of a full trilogy box set with blooper reel. So we have many exciting things to come in the months ahead, and we will most definitely need a group to offer support
[ 4:20 AM January 03, 2004: Message edited by: Gorwingel ]

Is the rumour about the theatrical dvd coming out in May a decided false rumour now?
Because if it is true (fingers crossed), the extended version should be out in August.
I don't think I could hold on until November.
Two extremely predictable words:
More Denethor.

There's so much I'd like to see in the EE, but these are the main things.
-Houses of Healing (top priority)
-Mouth of Sauron
-Saruman and Grima (of course)
-More Merry (him pledging his sword and so on)
-and the crossroads. 'The King has got his crown again', or suchlike.
I'd love a blooper reel, but I hope it's not just included in the box set. It's all I can do to afford the single DVD. Pity us poor souls with no money!
[ 10:38 AM January 03, 2004: Message edited by: Daisy Brambleburr ]

I happen to be of the opinion that a glimpse of a visible Sauron would have been nice. Maybe a EE inclusion. If not I am still excited to see many things I know that are waiting to be seen. Gandalf and the Witch King, Aragorn and the Palantiri, more battle shots, More time of Aragorn in Minas Tirith before they leave to the black gate, The fate of the rest of the fellowship unfolded (Gimli, Legolas, Etc), The Mouth of Sauron. As far a a length I think 5 hours might be a bit of a strech. 4.5 at the most. However the more the better.

Everlen- the support group is basically a group for everyone to support each other while eagerly waiting for the EE which doesn't come out for AGES...so yeah, I'm sure you'll have gathered by now that we definitely want it...
I want Houses of Healing, Merry and Théoden, More Sam is good, Mouth of Sauron would just be cool man...I think you guys have covered it. How much of the stuff we want have they actually filmed?
Ooh, Knight of Gondor, I LOVE your avvie!!!!!!!!!!!

I do believe that the "your hands are cold scene" with Arwen and Elrond will be longer. I have seen pictures of Arwen sitting on the same couch with Elrond in front of her with her hand on his cheek. I have also seen in the preview where she jumps up and hugs him. I also hope the "you gave away your life's grace; I cannot protect you anymore" scene with Elrond will be in there. I also think the Anduril scene will be extented with Elrond's line "this is your test, your travel's through widerness, through war have lead to this road." But most of all I want to see Legolas and Gimli sailing into the west.
Another part that could be added is when Sam must hold up the vial to get past the statues at the tower of Cirth Ungol. Just the way the theatrical verson was cut at this part tells me that it is possible something could be added.

I need it!!!!
I'd die happy if the EE is five hours long!!!
I really want to see:
- mouth of Sauron
- Saruman and Grima
- Houses of Healing
- The Crossroads (There's kind of a picture of that in one of the many behind the scenes LOTR books)
- Merry pledging his sword
- Elven warrior Sam (they didn't portray that image too well in the movie and it's something I really loved from the book!)
- More shire
- Gandalf and the Witch King
- More of the Weddings
- Faramir and Eowyn (I need more that a split second of those two together!)
- Aragorn + palantir
- Theoden's funeral
- The Fellowship saying goodbye
- more of Frodo's struggle in the end (I mean when he's leaving - they need to show a better job of WHY he's leaving (tons of my friends didn't get this))
- More... more of anything else anyone can think of!
I can't think of any more at the moment but in a few days my list may lengthen. I would love to see more of Faramir!
Houses of healing and pretty much everything that has been mentioned.
I would really like to see Aragorn looking into the Palantir.
And the Mouth of sauron because they have to get back the Mithril coat! That thing is too expensive to just be left lying around in Mordor.
also the watchers would be nice.
Another thing in the EE PJ better explain himself! PJ why is Arwen connected to the ring. Why oh why did you do this to us!!! It doesn't make any sense!

ALL of the above! Yes! but especially Eowyn and Faramir. I also want to see the death of Gothmog... the hairy-brain/orc captain. Eomer finding Eowyn after the battle of Pellenor. On the trailer it showed a split second shot of him holding someone w/ blond hair (it had to be her) and he was crying. It was heartbreaking! I definately want to see that one! But do you think they will put in the Mouth of Sauron? In the books that one orc got away with the the Mithril shirt and took it to Barad-Dur but in the movie it doesn't show that... well I suppose it could... nevermind me then.
And what about Gan-Buri-Gan!?!

Thank you Enorëiel! Someone else who thinks elven warrior/tark/rebel orcs/Sam is great! Though that part of the book made me feel pathetic. Never, in the four years I had known how to read, had a book sent me so quickly from bawling to hysterics (I was REALLY glad I didn't read that particular chapter on the school bus).
Also: did anyone notice (stupid question, really, I'm sure you all did) how in Mordor, Frodo and Sam are wearing orc gear one moment, and then the next time we see them they are in their old clothes again (somehow Frodo even got his suspenders back, and notice Sams lack of pots at Mount Doom)? This leads me to think we may yet see when Frodo says the gear is too much for him, and the part where Sam (poor old Sam) parts with his beloved cooking gear.

Yay! I can't wait. I head that RotK:EE is supposed to be 1 hour and 10 minutes longer, so around 4hrs, 40 min total. I alsoheard that it's not supposed to come out until 2005, but that can't be right, can it? *starts to worry* I hope that it'll come out before then. I'd like to see the part from the trailer where Merry says to Pippin "We shall see the Shire again." Plus all the other stuff mentioned. Oh, and the Mouth of Sauron wil definitely be in RotK:EE. They have a page or two about him in the book The Lord of the Rings: Weapons and Warfare, which only deals with movie stuff. That is one very cool book. You guys should see it. Also, in the RotK visual companion, they have a section on when Frodo and Sam are disguised as Orcs, and the end up in that one group of them. A very funny thing happened today. My mom was watching the Green Bay Packers game (they're an American football team, in case you didn't know. My family are all total cheeseheads) and my brother suddenly said "That music sounds familliar." The two of us suddenly dashed into the living room (we weren't watching the game), only to see that they were playing The Prophecy, from FotR! I am happy to report that the Packers won with a last-minute touchdown in overtime. I think it had to do with the fact that they played LotR music (which is always lucky).

Houses of Healing: Yes, yes, I forgot to include that!

quote:
I want to see the fight between Eowyn and the Witch-King extended to where it resembles the book more!

I don’t think there will be much extended stuff on this part.

quote:
The relationship Merry had with Theoden in the books - was disappointed we didn't get to see that!

Yep, that too. It’s amazing the stuff that was excluded from the final cut, after so much promotional stuff had been released about it. Online pictures, and even the visual aid and photo guide both talked of stuff that wasn’t in the movie.

quote:
And I would love to see Aragorn's coronation to resemble more what was in the book!

Yep, that’d be good.

quote:
Aragorn and Arwen's wedding as well as Faramir and Eowyn's! Theoden's funeral with the Rohirrim singing as they did in the book!

These are two things we probably will not see a whole lot more of, although there should be a little more involved with Aragorn’s coronation! We waited two movies for this, and Aragorn waited a good 60 years for it — and only a few minutes of it? Well, don’t want to be too critical of it, because I loved every minute of it.

quote:
I happen to be of the opinion that a glimpse of a visible Sauron would have been nice. Maybe a EE inclusion.

Eh...I disagree, I don’t think any visible representation of Sauron would be an improvement.

quote:
Aragorn dying

No, I can pretty much certainly say that we won’t see this. It was already pretty much covered in “flash forwards” in The Two Towers, Elrond’s predictions. I think the focus at the end of the movie would want to be more on the victories, the triumphs, and then shifting back to the hobbits’ return home.

quote:
How much of the stuff we want have they actually filmed?

Correct me if I miss anything, and I’ll tell you what I know. We all know they filmed Saruman’s demise. The Crossroads, we’ve seen pictures released of that, so we know it’s been filmed. The Palantír, this was most likely. The thing is, in the visual companion, it says Sauron showed Aragorn the lifeless image of Arwen when he looked in the Palantír. It said that this shattered the power of the Evenstar, and the pendant Arwen gave him shattered. So did the visual aid just mix it up, the dream that he had and the scene where he looked in the Palantír? The Houses of Healing was filmed, and is going to be in the EE.

quote:
Ooh, Knight of Gondor, I LOVE your avvie!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you. I liked the Ring personally too, but it was too big and I was requested to chose another. I looked and looked for a White Tree avatar, and this one works. I hope to find one of the MOVIE version of the emblem, but this one’s good for now.

quote:
I do believe that the "your hands are cold scene" with Arwen and Elrond will be longer. I have seen pictures of Arwen sitting on the same couch with Elrond in front of her with her hand on his cheek.

*Rolls eyes* That’s all we need, more Arwen.

quote:
I have also seen in the preview where she jumps up and hugs him. I also hope the "you gave away your life's grace; I cannot protect you anymore" scene with Elrond will be in there.

Gee, I forgot about that part. What IS it with them releasing stuff for a preview that won’t be in the film?? I’m STILL wondering where that shot of Éomer riding slowly and lowering his spear from the TTT preview goes.

quote:
But most of all I want to see Legolas and Gimli sailing into the west.

I think I can conclusively state that you won’t see that.

quote:
I do hope, though, that the put in th escene where Aragorn finds the young seed of the White Tree of Gondor

I know! I wanted more White Tree too. It’s, after all, the defining emblem of Gondor! And the Tree itself looked quite shabby in the version. The trunk was at a very decided lean! I doubt they will do the sapling scene, though...probably just a healing of the old one.

quote:
no more frodo-wimpiness

This is the EXTENDED version, Lady Snickerdoodle. If anything, we’ll see more.

quote:
Elven warrior Sam (they didn't portray that image too well in the movie and it's something I really loved from the book!)

I thought they did it pretty well! The orcs cowered to see the shadow, then thought it was a wimpy hobbit they could take on — and found out they thought wrong! Like many things, it wasn’t taken verbatim from the books, but still pretty good.

quote:
Oo! And a blooper reel that would be awesome!

It’ll be fun...but I think that’s probably going to be year after next, from what I hear from one guy on the news talking about it. A trilogy set. You know, how they wait to do that, like they did with that *other* trilogy Star Warped?

quote:
I would really like to see Aragorn looking into the Palantir.

By the way, in the movie, why the heck does Aragorn act all weak when he picks up the Palantír?? He picks it up from Pippin, and then rolls on the floor.

quote:
also want to see the death of Gothmog... the hairy-brain/orc captain.

Yeah! I think a combined effort of Gimli and Aragorn kill him...if I remember correctly from that 60 Minutes behind the scenes thing.

quote:
Eomer finding Eowyn after the battle of Pellenor. On the trailer it showed a split second shot of him holding someone w/ blond hair (it had to be her) and he was crying. It was heartbreaking! I definately want to see that one!

A preliminary report on TheOneRing.net indicated this scene would yank our hearts. As if the rest of RotK didn’t!

quote:
And what about Gan-Buri-Gan!?!

Probably not.

quote:
Also: did anyone notice (stupid question, really, I'm sure you all did) how in Mordor, Frodo and Sam are wearing orc gear one moment, and then the next time we see them they are in their old clothes again (somehow Frodo even got his suspenders back, and notice Sams lack of pots at Mount Doom)? This leads me to think we may yet see when Frodo says the gear is too much for him, and the part where Sam (poor old Sam) parts with his beloved cooking gear.

Yep. Kind of like in Fellowship, where *zap* and they have the Elven cloaks. They’ll almost surely show more of this.

In the actors' commentary on the extended DVD, Wood says something about that pack that Astin had to carry for almost the entire shoot, at least until he threw it away.
I wouldn't be surprised if we get the scene were Frodo and Sam through their gear down a fisure. Really, Orominuialwen? Your family too? My mom's side of the family is sickeningly obsessed with the Packers. It drives me insane (I hate football). I heard the music too, and it angered me. How dare they defile my precious LOTR??? ATTACK!!!
Anyway, I'm really looking forward to the EE. It's gonna be great (duh. Did I even have to say that?) I can't wait to see the Houses of Healing. I love that part. *cough* More Eomer. *cough* Please?? And once I finish rereading ROTK, I will have a longer list...oh, and better characterisation of Faramir and Denethor. They weren't similar enough. I doubt that'll happen. I hated the way they portrayed Denethor, especially how he fell on the fire, by accident. If I remember correctly, it was no accident that Denethor burns. It diminishes his character tenfold. (Thanks to my friend for pointing this out to me. She's just finishing LOTR for the first time. Three cheers for her!)

I'll believe the DVD's (both theatrical & EE version) comes out earlier in the year than the previous ones - WHEN I SEE IT!
Concerning the length of the RotK EE - I've heard two different interviews with PJ where he answers questions about this; in one he says (well) over one hour extra, in the other he said a good ½ hour. Unfortunately, he sounded much more 'real' when he mentioned just over ½ an hour
And there might be good financial reasons for this. If the EE RotK get much longer than the TT EE, it'll have to be on more than 2 DVD's! With all the extra stuff in the form of DST sound & all that, there's simply not enough room... So if we get a very long (+4 hours) version, we're either looking at a 5 DVD boxset, or one where there's less extra material on one of the DVD's to make room for more movie.
Sorry to sound pessimistic, but...

Take a look.

quote:
On the other side, there’s the much longer ending.
PB: Oh, are you kidding? We could’ve gone on for a half-hour if you wanted to play out the whole ending.
Was there some discussion at any point of, at least, a credit call or a narration of what happened to everybody? I was on War of the Ring yesterday I found some info on RotK:EE. Here it is.
quote:
LORD of the Rings fans who feel third film Return of the King is too long at three hours 21 minutes should brace themselves for the DVD release - director Peter Jackson plans a FIVE-HOUR version.
Movie house New Line Cinema will also get in on the act by screening 12-HOUR marathons of the complete full-length Tolkien trilogy in the summer.

So that means that RotK:EE could be even longer than previously thought (if the article is reliable). Also, maybe another Trilogy Tuesday-type showing. And it'll be during the summer (of what year, I don't know) so I won't have to go to school that day!
Yes Laitoste, my mom loves the Packers. It's rather funny because she likes football much more than my dad, who doesn't really care about it. I'm not too into football myself, but I don't mind it as long as nobody tries to get me to play it or watch it (when I am forced to play it in gym class, it becomes the most evil sport in the world). But I was glad they played LotR music. It shows that the people there like the music, and the more people who like LotR-related stuff, the better.(One of my missions in life is to convince everybody I know to read LotR.) So even if you hate football, it's more effective to convert your enemies to your side than to defeat them.
Another thing I'd like to see is Pippin kill the troll at the battle of the Morannon. Plus, more of Eldarion.

On another note, has anyone heard what sort of stuff there will be with the gift set for RotK? We got the Fellowship one with the Argonath bookends (sweet) but not the TTT one because who wants a slimy Gollum? They should have done Barad-dur and Orthanc, in my opinion. I would love to see a few more DVD extras. What a treat it would be to view Elijah Wood's home-made screen test that he sent in to PJ or a few of the bloopers the actors made during filming (perhaps even the gag reel that most of them have been speaking about)! I personally also just love looking for those hidden DVD easter eggs, and I hope PJ puts a few more of those. Do you all think that this is likely? More behind-the-scenes stuff between the actors would be great, too. Can't wait!

Yeah, I was going to say that about the length.

quote:
I do hope, though, that the put in th escene where Aragorn finds the young seed of the White Tree of Gondor and the part when Arwen gives her necklace to Frodo. I love those parts.

Was I the only one who noticed that at Aragorn's coronation the white tree was in bloom again? And the pendant was given to Arwen's son in her vision, but was shattered in Aragorn's vision. Either way, I don't think it will go to Frodo.

Actually, something I would love to see is Jackson's and Walsh's 70-odd page treatment that they originally pitched to Miramax. I think it would be great to see how the films were invisioned at the very beginning and how much their ideas evolved over time.
H.C.

Some mention of the Pukel-men
8. Closure on Bill the Pony! It'd be nice to find out that Bill did get home all right, though I doubt it'll make the DVD.

Where were the Pukel-men? I don't remember seeing any. The only men that I saw who remotely resembled what I had imagined the Pukel-men looked like, were the Corsairs of Umbar, during that shot where you see the Black Fleet sailing up towards the Anduin.

And, though I know it won't be there, the Scouring of the Shire. Ressurected (topical phrase eh?) this thread, as I've been reading the Weapons and Warfare book and it seems to give a few clues as to what will be in the EE.

1/ It mentions the WK breaking Gandalf's staff. I can't remember but do we see Gandalf's staff after Pippin finds him and tells him about Faramir as this is where the confrontation will probably be.

2/ Aragorn looks into the Palantir in MINAS TIRITH after the battle of pellenor fields and confronts Sauron.

3/ This in turn causes Orcs to catch up with Frodo and Sam, but as they are in Orc costume they get away with it (as we all know)

4/ Mouth of Sauron is taught a lesson by Aragorn at the black gates

5/ Denethor's Palantir is also mentioned in the book as the thing that started to send him mad, so we may see this.

6/ It mentions that Merry stabs the WK twice??????

7/ It mentions Houses of Healing - Eoywn being waylaid by the effects of killing the witch king (but nothing on merry so maybe he's left out of house of healing as he was at the black gate)

8/ it mentions the love of faramir and eoywn, and faramir becoming the prince of ithilien, and eoywn his wife.

9/ funnily enough it gives 3 possible endings (ie rumours) for Saruman. 1 is that he's killed by Wormtounge at isengard, one is that his end comes in the shire (!!!!!!), and one that he ventured into the East.

-----------

Thing I picked up from TV shows

7/ Hopefully we will see the Crossroads as I saw this being filmed on a documentary.

8/ I saw a great shot of Sam sadly throwing away his saucepans in a documentary. hopefully this will be in the EE.

Things I picked up from the editing

8/ The Captains of the West are on horse back at the end of one scene at the black gate and then on foot when we go back. Will something happen in between?

9/ You can see the Watchers when Sam goes into the Tower. Will we see anything of his struggle?

10/ If we have a MoS, then what about the Mithril shirt? I don't remember Frodo having it on his way to Mount Doom, so hopefully this will stay as in the book.

11/ The ending, to me, seemed RUSHED. Will we have anything else in the Shire?

12/ what about goodbyes from the fellowship. or will this be too much?

13/ an epilouge on what happened to the characters at the end of the film. PB and FW have mentioned on the ain't it cool website that this could well be in the EE.

Roll on November...............

Well good news... according to www.theonering.net, New Line is going to be making an announcement about the release schedule of the ROTK DVD (or DVD's, I do not yet know if they are going to be talking about the extended edition, but it is a most likely) this Monday, March 8.

All I have heard is that they are going to be coming out earlier because they are done, and they have only been working on the EE, etc... etc...

We may have the theatrical out as early as May, and then my Dad said something about when he went to the record store today, them saying something about the theatrical coming out in a month.

They are coming... :D ...soon!

Well, May 25. seems to be the fixed date for RotK-theatrical. But some doubt still remains concerning RotK-EE, it seems. Some says September, others 'around Christmas'. Maybe the truth is that even PJ & New Line doesn't know, if it isn't finished yet. And PJ is probably busy with "King Kong" already.

But if the EE doesn't turn up untill Christmas time, at least the 'short version' can comfort us while we wait! It's great it's coming in May :) .

Just a note on A Filmmaker's Journey: Making "The Return of the King". I taped it off of ITV a month or so ago. It is absolutely brilliant, and I use it to keep my 5 year old son happy until May 25th, as there are a lot of shots from the movie in it, including quite a lot of 'give aways' if you haven't already seen the movie.

Not sure if the National Geographic one has already been shown as well. I found this one a bit weak really (if it's the one I'm thinking about), as they try to compare certain parts of the book with real historical characters (I suppose it's the only way they can make this sort of programme for a factual TV channel)

I've not been that impressed with the 'extras' in the theatrical release dvds of any of the films, bu of course the EE extras make up for this.

Bets on the statue we'll get with the EE this year? I'm going for King Elessar.....

I really hope to see development of the relationship between Eowyn and Faramir, heck, any evidence of a connection would be nice! That’s what I most hope to see. I also want to see the Mouth of Sauron.

Hmm, a list, eh? How about:

1. Saruman/Grima (I'll never accept any excuse of PJ's on this one, & no matter how good the EE version of this is, I doubt it will make up for Jackson's editing shenanagins (sp? close enough...)

2. House of Healing (hopefully they'll have enough time alotted to it to do it justice...

3. The Mouth of Sauron (he better be freaky!)

4. The Witch-King vs. Gandalf confrontation (It should be cool, especially if the WK brakes Gandalf's staff with his mace, like I've heard he does)

5. Legolas & Gimli drinking contest (I could imagine an elf getting tipsy after just a few ales. Wine, no doubt, is a different matter for elves, but ales seem strong enough to knock the 'prissy creatures' of their feet ;) )

6. Easterlings (not that I really care that much, but I would like to see the race that plays a dramatic part in TTT [of course I mean them nearly catching Frodo & Sam] at leats show up in the battles in RotK  )

I would like very much to see a blooper reel

Me too! That would be really awesome...not sure if it's been mentioned before or not, but I think PJ & co. gave all of the cast members a blooper real of their own, with their best (or worst, depending on how you look at it) screw-ups.

Hi guys!

Well, I must say (sorry if I dissappoint anyone) that I very much doubt that they'll have the 'battle' in the shire in the EE. Since all the hints of such a thing happening that should've come in the other movies didn't, I'm pretty sure we'll have to settle with a more calm and quiet return to the shire.
I also (like someone else here, sorry I can't remember who) doubt that Arwen will give her necklace to Frodo, as she has already given it (as a symbol of her love) to Aragorn.

Then I've only got one, no two things to ad to the list of things-we-wish-to-see-on-the-EE-DVD:
1) Legolas' longing for the west (SONG! SONG! SONG!)
2) Legolas and Gimli's promises to each other to go see Fangorn and The Glittering Caves again

(Of course my list includes everything else mentioned here... that drinking game sounds VERY interesting!)

Knight of Gondor
03-30-2004, 10:38 PM
I never held hope that the EE might have the scouring of the Shire. I knew that was pretty much out.

As far as pricing goes, I believe the regular (wimpy!) DVDs of the movie cost about 15 bucks, if you get them at Wal-Mart. (You should consider buying them at a Blockbuster, though, and ask for their promotional stuff!) The EE's plain are about $30. The big, souped up ones are about $70, but we price-matched ours pretty low. Wait a while, though, and you can usually buy those very discounted, like at Amazon.com!

In the Return of the King, when Pippin successfully lights the beacon of Minas Tirith, it shows a parting glance at Denethor peeking out from what one could deem his secret 'high chamber of the tower'. I just noticed that the shiny black carvings around him are really pretty reminscent of the inside of Isengard. I have no idea where they would be able to place a scene revealing the Palantir of Minas Tirith, but that glimpse of that room certainly indicates that some mention of Denethor's secretive side was filmed.

Other than that, I have 4.5 words describing the EE scenes I can't wait for;

Aragorn using Palantír, or at least holding it (“He has gone unchallenged long enough”)

Short on time, so I can't discuss them all now, but I thought I'd get the ball rolling in talking about them. :)

Arg! You people are making me so excited about the Extended Edition! I'm hoping for the HoH, the Scouring (yes, I know it won't happen, but hey! You never know), more Faramir and Eowyn...et cetera. Bloopers would be lovely.

Knight, I would add to your list of possible EE material the confrontation with Saruman at Isengard (which we have been promised) and also the confrontation with the Corsairs at Pelargir (as I believe that more Corsair material was filmed). Any possibility of the Druadan making an appearance, I wonder. I know that Ghan-buri-Ghan appeared on some early cast lists, but I'm not sure that any material in this regard was actually filmed.

Oh and, of course, hand-in-hand with the Houses of Helaing scenes goes Eowyn and Faramir's romance. :)

In TTT extended edition, Galadriel makes a point to tell Frodo that the keeper of the third elf ring "is to be revealed". In ROTK that is never really revealed. The end scene shows Gandalf wearing the ring, but nothing is ever said about it. I saw ROTK the other day for the third time and noticed a strange camera shot of Galadriel in that same ending scene. She had a strange look on her face as if she had just said something that we, the audience, missed. I wonder if Gandalf as the third ring bearer gets mentioned here.

If I'm not mistaken, Gandalf did possess a ring of power, though I don't know what it was. Perhaps he was given the last elven ring of power for safe keeping, because they show all three original elven ringbearers in the opening of FOTR.

starkat

Gandalf was given the third ring by Cirdain (sp?) the shipwright. I remember the look on Galadriel's face. Doesn't Gandalf talk about having the third ring in the book at the Grey Havens?
I was watching the TTT theatrical 2nd DVD and noticed footage of Aragorn approaching the seat in the hall at Minas Tirith. If it does make it into the RotK EE where do you think they'll add it?

Pippinn

-smacks her head- Yes! Gandalf does speak of possesing a ring of Power in the book. I forgot that the shipwright Cirdain gave him the ring. I can't recall which ring it was, though...

The book mentions it, but it doesn't include any conversations about it. So I don't think there would be any need for them to bring it up again. The average viewer would totally forget all about the three Elven rings that were mentioned in the prologue.

starkat
04-30-2004, 05:15 AM
I beg to differ about the average viewer forgetting. I went to see RotK with a younger of mine, who hadn't read the books, and after we left the theater I mentioned something about the ring on Gandalf's hand in the movie. I was curious to see if she had noticed it. She said she wondered about where it came from.

Added at 1:22pm:
I just dropped in on TORn to see what I could see and they had an interview with a New Line executive. One of the questions was possible RotK EE scenes...the Mouth of Sauron, Sarumon after the flooding of Isengard, and an expansion of Faramir's story were listed as being added.

The giving of the ring of fire to Gandalf is surely mentioned in the appendices of the books - it's even mentioned that Cirdan (or Kirdan, as it's sometime spelled) says to Gandalf something to the extend of "that he's giving him the ring in the hope of Gandalf being able to once again light a fire in the hearts of people in a world that's growing cold..."

Not sure if this has been mentioned previously, but the part of the book I want to see in the EE the most is the tale of the years after the Ringbearers have departed West.

But listening to Frodo's narration at the end of the film for the umpteenth time, I have now realised that Sam will not be following Frodo in the movie version.

Frodo implicitally states that the ship they are on is the LAST ship to depart for the West. ie, in Jackson's version, Sam does not follow Frodo, and this makes me VERY sad!

PS This is obviously why we had Celeborn on the ship as well........in the book he stays in lothlorien a while before he departs. But in Mr Jackson's version, he needs to take the last bus home!

I don't remember where I heard it, but supposedly they are supposed to be redoing the ending a little. I think it was to make it a little smoother. I don't know for sure.

Well I am back from Spain, now I am getting excited for the EE since it is the next thing tp look forward too afetr the theatrical version comes out and my birthday has passed.

Some LOTR things in Spain, when I left the local video rental place had lots of posters in the indow but they didn't sell them! Anyway bought the Spanish version of FOTR, saw a pirated copy of ROTK in Spanish. Gollum's voice is so weird. This all kept me from not getting too excited about the EE until I came back.

However now I am getting more excited since I saw some pics of the EE on that German website.
:)

I can't get my spanish partner to read LOTR but I think that if she did she would really like it. :(

Mouth of Sauron – Showing them the tokens of Frodo, despairing for Frodo, killing the Mouth (Aragorn)
Indeed it is. Maybe that was the "Aragorn fighting Sauron" bit that everyone was getting so worked up about before? ;)

More with Frodo and Sam, orc-armor. (Getting caught up in the army of other orcs?)
Yep, that's in. If you have the Visual Companion, there is a two-page section on it. Usually, if something is in the VC, and it wasn't in theaters, it will be in the EV. This is how I discovered that the Huorns would indeed make their appearance at Helm's Deep: a mention of it in the VC.

Sam passing the Watchers
This is mentioned in the VC as well.

Aragorn using Palantír, or at least holding it
Yep. Remember the dream Aragorn has at Dunharrow, just before he goes to see Elrond? That's what he sees in the Palantir. This is mentioned in the VC.

And, to all the Brandybuck fans, there are supposed to be quite a few new Merry scenes (something like 12) in the EV. Most lofty. :D :D

Any bookstore, pretty much. I got my Fellowship VC from Deseret Book, a local chain; Towers, my grandma got it for me (from Barnes & Noble unless I'm much mistaken); and I bought RotK VC at Borders (actually when Andy Serkis was there doing a signing for his book :D)

Ringer Spy Nathan wrote in with this exciting bit of ROTK EE
speculation:
"Two of my friends and I waited at the Best Buy in Richfield MN ... for
the ROTK DVD. At the end of the night, a New Line Rep keeping a low
profile at the event came up to us and told us how happy he was with our
dedication. [....] We also talked about the EE DVD, and he told us to
expect a January release, or late December, but that was unlikely. He
added that they were looking at first releasing the EE in theatres, and
that a 'super-trilogy' Tuesday was under consideration, but not a
definite, while mentioning that last year's EE releases were very
lucrative for the studio."

Cheers,

Well my sister makes fun of me for watching the films too many times. Even though I rarely ever watch it. I very much enjoy the films, but it is just that recently I have been rather short of time, so the films have been getting the backseat. But I do think I may watch them this weekend.

I just can't wait for the Extended Edition. I would really like (I've been thinking about this recently), and hope that they have something in it on the Oscars. I also would love it they could have Billy Crystal's opening for one of the Easter Eggs.

I kind of wish right now though that they would have just kept the theatrical edition on the same release date as they always have had (in August). Because it is hard to get the theatrical and then have to wait such a long time for the Extended.

I also agree with you, Gorwingel, about the release dates; if they're going to keep us waiting until December for the EV (which is later than the other two were released, BTW), then they should've waited to release the TE until August. Well I doubt that fans would attack the offices. But it is just that the only thing that seems to be angering me now is the seemingly constant shuffling of the release date of this DVD. Could they please just set a date, and stick with it!

I would think for us the sooner it's out the better, but then we also want the best DVD possible, and I would like to think that their high standards of quality is what is causing the date to be pushed back. I would love for the release date to be in November, but if that isn't possible, it does make a great holiday gift (or birthday, because my birthday is in January).

It is just that when I watch my theatrical I always think about the additional scenes that are missing. I really want to see those additional scenes, and I don't want to have to wait another six months to see them! :)

Said offensive thing you were warned of beforehand is the sad, but true fact that I haven't got no extended editions at all. Yes, your eyes do not deceive you - neither FoTR, nor TTT.

But I'll try to make my amends - I'm waiting for the RoTK EE to buy them all three together and spend one of the week-ends following the purchase with my nose pressed onto the screen, curtains drawn, 'no admittance' sign on the door. Such a manoeuvre will, for one, save me shipping costs (which are quite high for stuff from US to reach this far overseas spot on the map). Besides, well, DVD player was obtained by yours truly just recently, so there was no point in making fuss about extended editions without means of watching mentioned.

So, come, sweet November.

PS I hope to see books less spoiled :p

Return of the King: Extended Edition delayed

By Henning Molbaek

According to New Line the Extended Edition of "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" will not meet a November release date as the first two films of the trilogy did.

It will be released sometime in December before Christmas. The reason for the delay was given to the difficulties in gathering cast and crew now busy with other movies for the audio commentaries.

We will be back when we have more on this release.

I pre-ordered my EE of TTT from Chapters.ca and was delighted (nay, giddy) when it arrived in the mail the day BEFORE it was slated for official release in the stores.

Of course, my wife went into labour that very day so I didn't have a chance to watch it for a couple of weeks, but at least I got it a day before everyone else (or so it felt at the time).
