View Full Version : "Minor works" Quotes
HerenIstarion
01-20-2001, 02:48 PM
I'm strating new thread where JRRT's "minor works" (i.e. Leaf by Niggle, Farmer Giles of Ham, Smith of Wotton... etc) (not directly connected with ME) will be quoted.
Let's get rolling:
Who said and to whom:
"And the wind has blown half the tiles on my roof, and water is pouring into the bedroom. I think I ought to get the doctor. And the builders, too, only they take so long to come. I was wondering if you had any wood and canvas you could spare, just to patch me up and see me through for a day or two."
A story must be told or there'll be no story, yet it is the untold stories that are most moving
edit:
Here's the list of works currently used in this thread:
Farmer Giles of Ham
The Adventures of Tom Bombadil
Leaf by Niggle
Smith of Wootton Major
On Fairy Stories
Mythopoeia
The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth Beorhthelm's Son
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
Father Christmas Letters
The Monsters and the Critics
Roverandom
The Lay of Aotrou and Itroun
A Secret Vice
Mr. Bliss

Re: "minor works" quotes
Good for you. Little things need attention, too. This is from "Leaf by Niggle," which I just read over Christmas, and it's Niggle's neighbor talking to Niggle. (I don't remember the neighbor's name, but, shh, don't tell anyone.) <img src=wink.gif ALT=";)">

That's the fellow.
Estelyn Telcontar
10-11-2002, 03:38 PM
This one's really easy, but I like it so much that I'm using it anyway: No doubt some who deserved to be asked were overlooked, and some who did not were invited by mistake; for that is the way of things, however careful those who arrange such matters may try to be. Doesn't that sound a bit like Gandalf's 'Many that live deserve death' speech?
The Squatter of Amon Rûdh
10-11-2002, 05:23 PM
That description of the Feast of Good Children from Smith of Wootton Major certainly looks very Gandalf-esque. Perhaps he's the narrator. smilies/wink.gif

Estelyn Telcontar
10-22-2002, 03:16 PM
The quote is found in 'The Sea-Bell', "The Adventures of Tom Bombadil". As close as I can figure it out, it's the boat speaking, either that or the sea shell which is telling the story.
The Squatter of Amon Rûdh
10-22-2002, 03:19 PM
You got the title of the work and the title of the poem, but the speaker is neither the boat nor the shell.
Estelyn Telcontar
10-22-2002, 03:25 PM
OK, if the narrator is the one speaking that sentence, then it would be Frodo, as the poem is also called Frodos Dreme.

I would have accepted "The narrator". Good show.

Don't tell me I've got both of you stumped. It's neither Bombadil nor Tolkien, I'm sorry to say, but think along the lines of battles and you'll get it.
HerenIstarion
10-28-2002, 06:14 AM
You obviously have :) The only mention of bogies I could recall comes from here:
Hoy! Here's Woodman Tom with his billу-beard on!'
laughed all the little folk of Hays-end and Breredon.
'Ware, Tom' We'll shoot you dead with our bows and arrows'
We don't let Forest-folk nor bogies from the Barrows

'Fie, little fatbellies! Don't ye make so merry!

Here's an optimistic quote for the day: I expect it will turn out all right.
HerenIstarion
11-07-2002, 02:58 AM
that's old Master Cook, smith's grandfather, to Alf when he (grandfather) was leaving
Estelyn Telcontar
11-07-2002, 04:19 AM
Quite right, HI - your turn!
HerenIstarion
11-07-2002, 06:48 AM
I confess I'm going to cheat  (just a little), but who said this:
He who would enter into the Kingdom of Faerie should have the heart of a little child
Estelyn Telcontar
11-09-2002, 12:30 PM
That quote was a bit tricky, HI, though I was sure I would find it in Tolkien's essay 'On Fairy Stories'. There he quotes Andrew Lang, who made the above statement.
HerenIstarion
11-11-2002, 01:04 AM
Yes, Esty, that's him :)
Estelyn Telcontar
11-13-2002, 05:55 AM
Here's a new quote for you: You'll never find it out, the way that we have brought you!
HerenIstarion
11-13-2002, 06:42 AM
Badger-brock to Tom Bombadil :)
Estelyn Telcontar
11-13-2002, 07:44 AM
Yes indeed, HI - go ahead with a new one!
HerenIstarion
11-13-2002, 07:52 AM
well, off we go!
Now then! One at a time
Estelyn Telcontar
11-20-2002, 05:19 AM
Time to get this neglected thread going again! The answer is: Farmer Giles of Ham, trying to make sense of everyone talking all at once!

corrr-r-r-rrect :D

Here's a quote that tickles my fancy: His head was not screwed on tight enough. Who says it, and of whom?
Estelyn Telcontar
11-25-2002, 03:09 AM
Anyone want to take a shot at this quote? It's quite easy!
HerenIstarion
11-26-2002, 01:12 AM
well, that's First Voice about Niggle in ":eaf by Niggle"
Estelyn Telcontar
11-26-2002, 04:06 AM
That's right, HI - you're next!
HerenIstarion
11-26-2002, 05:45 AM
You will hear from us later
Estelyn Telcontar
11-29-2002, 06:09 AM
That was the King, Augustus Bonifacius Ambrosius Aurelianus Antoninus Pius et Magnificus, dux rex, tyrannus, et Basileus Mediterranearum Partium, speaking to Farmer Giles of Ham (or, if you prefer, Ægidius Ahenobarbus Julius Agricola de Hammo).
HerenIstarion
11-30-2002, 02:49 AM
Mais oui, c'etait lui vraiment, Bonifacius rex etc etc :) Madame, votre tour, je vous en prie...
Estelyn Telcontar
11-30-2002, 04:02 AM
Um, Madame is me, right? And it is my turn - but that's all I can guess. What little French I had the opportunity of learning has been mostly forgotten, unfortunately! Well, here's a new quote: It'll make them laugh.
HerenIstarion
12-03-2002, 03:14 AM
Nokes to Alf at the putting of silver star into the Great Cake

The Squatter of Amon Rûdh

That's the one. Your turn, Esty.

The Squatter of Amon Rûdh
12-13-2002, 11:13 AM
Righto. Here's one that could prove topical:
I'll give your otter-fell to Barrow-wights.
Estelyn Telcontar
12-14-2002, 03:55 AM
That's Tom Bombadil; he continues: They'll taw you! Then smother you in gold-rings!
Hmmmmmm, that brings us back to the old question: What was Tom B's role in the matter of the Rings of Power???
The Squatter of Amon Rûdh
12-14-2002, 07:19 AM
Tom it most certainly is, and indeed it does. You may continue.
Estelyn Telcontar
12-14-2002, 09:14 AM
Here's a challenge, I hope! For children are innocent and love justice; while most of us are wicked and naturally prefer mercy.
The Squatter of Amon Rûdh
12-14-2002, 12:05 PM
G.K. Chesterton. Tolkien quotes him in the section of On Fairy-Stories entitled Children. That was rather a tricky one, as I was naturally inclined to think that it was Tolkien himself who had said it.
Estelyn Telcontar
12-14-2002, 01:14 PM
I might have known that I couldn't baffle you for long; you're right, of course, Squatter. Your turn!
The Squatter of Amon Rûdh
12-14-2002, 02:55 PM
Thank you. Let's see how you fare with this one:
To mortal fields say farewell

Green is the land, the leaves are long, and the birds are singing.

Ah, I finally found it! It's sung by the Elven rowers in 'The Last Ship'.

Try this one on for size then:
I shall enchant my heart, and I shall place it upon the top of the flower of the cedar. Now the cedar shall be cut down and my heart will fall to the ground, and thou shalt come to seek for it...
Estelyn Telcontar
01-13-2003, 10:15 AM
...even though thou pass seven years in seeking it; but when thou hast found it, put it into a vase of cold water, and in very truth I shall live.
That's beautiful, Squatter! It's from the essay 'On Fairy-Stories', quoting The Tale of the Two Brothers; speaker is the younger brother to the elder.
The Squatter of Amon Rûdh
01-13-2003, 10:55 AM

Well, the answer is, it's our friend Tídwald to Torhthelm again, from The homecoming of Beorhtnoth, Beorhthelm's Son.

HerenIstarion, who started this thread and has unfortunately been missing from it lately, and Squatter and I, who have been the only players recently, cordially invite one and all to join us in the fascinating search for quotes in Tolkien's minor works!
These are:
Farmer Giles of Ham
The Adventures of Tom Bombadil
Leaf by Niggle
Smith of Wootton Major
On Fairy Stories
Mythopoeia
The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth Beorhthelm's Son
(contained in various collections, for example in 'Tree and Leaf' and 'Tales from the Perilous Realm')
Here's a new quote to start with: Who would have thought of seeing you here?
HerenIstarion
02-19-2003, 06:49 AM
ai, ai, the conversation which the given quote is derived from always makes me laugh :D
I won't answer though, and for 2 reasons
1 Let others join
2 I don't know when I'll be online next time
so I'll go away quitely grinning and chuckling under my moustache...
(well, I have no moustache to be honest, but it sounds funnier - chuckling under one's moustache...)
Estelyn Telcontar
02-19-2003, 07:12 AM
Heren, how nice that you dropped in here to say 'hi', at least - we've missed you! Now, who's going to try their hand at that quote - it's not hard at all.

Nice clue, HI, but not so very helpful when I don't know in which minor work to start searching - or if I even have the work from which it's taken. Has it been mentioned in the above list? If not, how about a complete (new) list of the works which we are using now? Thanks!
