We've upgraded to the new vBulletin 3.0 Gold version, and I'm sure there will be lots of questions. Ask them here.

Will it be permanent? Because quite frankly, i hate it. It completly throws off the mood that i used to have every time i got on the downs.
Also, what's with the green and blue dots by my avatar when i post?
The Barrow-Wight
03-20-2004, 05:34 PM
As the announcement on every forum says, no, it will not be permanent. We are working on getting the graphics back in order. I just thought I'd open it up so people could continue to post.

03-20-2004, 06:03 PM
Why does it say "registered user" next to some people's names instead of "Shade of Carn Dûm" or whatever their title is?
Another thing, I was posting in the Quotable Quotes/Quiz Room and I tried to post and got a message that said something like "you can't post because your message is under ten characters" but just before that I had posted an equally short post and didn't get that message. Does a quote not count for message length?

Personally, I really like the way it looks right now... I don't really notice that many shocking differences; just positive ones... it seems less crowded and more "open"... um... that doesn't make a lot of sense, but I suppose it doesn't matter because I'm probably the only one that's liking it right now. I like it better than the UBB and other VBulletin version. I like it that the messages cover the whole screen instead of being shoved to the right. I even like the blue lines. I hope you don't "fix" it too much.... :) The only thing I don't like is that it ate my message the first time I tried to post here. Oh well.
What is the difference between Guided Mode and Enhanced Mode? I don't noticed a change toggling between the two.

What the heck! I just got used to using the forum after the last upgrade. Now I'm all lost again.I was just here earlier and everything was fine; this is well quite shocking to say the least.Hope your iron out the graphics because right now (please don't kill me) it looks like crap.I'm not a big fan of the blue lines.Right now Its rather intimidating.I'm afraid to do anything; it looks like it could blow up or something.
Sorry for my rant,

I personally like the changes. It's different, yes, but I will get used to it like I had to when the Downs first switched to V Bulletin. I like how you can switch the look of the threads to whatever form you want.
But I do have a question. In my profile, it gives a link that says "Event Reminders". When I clicked on it, it said that I didn't have any. But how do I add events to the list?
I am also quite interested in what Firefoot asked about the titles under your name as well. I was growing quite used to being a "Shade". I've been one so long that I have grown quite fond of the title. Is it ever going to return?

Yes, I too have become very fond of my "shadeness", It seems to be the only one which isnt working.

The user ranks (ie. Pile O'Bones, Haunting Spirit, etc.) have been reactivated. The upgrade didn't transfer those correctly, but we've fixed it.
*edit* Hmmmm.. Now I see both Titles and Ranks. The idea was to have Titles replace Ranks. Back to the drawing board.

This new wide-screen format (text not indented) is **fabulous**. I hope it survives the graphics cleanup...?
And I was thrilled to see:

and

How do you reply to a PM because for the life of me I can't figure it out, so I have to do it the long way and just craft an entirely new PM. Am I just being blind?

You aren't blind! :)
It only took me 1/2 an hour to figure the darned thing out.
At the bottom, right, of the opened PM you're reading are 2 choices:
the first is 'Forward'; the second, 'Quote'.
Choose 'Quote' to make your reply.

Oh my Gosh! I hate the look of this version!
It just seems so unorganized, and messy. This has to be my least favorite of all the versions of the Barrow-Downs (I actually thought that the last one was pretty good, except for the whole having to adjust the size of your avatars yourself).

03-21-2004, 07:09 AM
I actually really really like this one. I mean, now you can see the thread name for "last posted" in each forum from themain page, the user CP is a lot easier to use and its all very logical..
I have a question... I foolishly got rid of my avatar, and now I don't actually have a little "choose avatar" box. Hm...

It's gonna take some getting used to but I think I might manage it. I apoligize for my previous rant, but it was a little scary.I still don't have my "Haunting Spirit" title, but I will manage.(Accually I'm quite ready for a change, but I don't know how many posts I have to have to "move on up" to a new title on the Downs.)
Btw as questioned before, what is the difference between Guilded and Enhanced mode??
Peace, I'm sure I'll have more Questions later,

Once again I leave for only a few days, and return to find the site changed! :eek:I'm sure I'll get used to it quick, but one question- In the Folder Controls there is a bar with three colours: red, orange, and green. What exactly is it for?

Vuelve - technically you are a Wight now.
But my question is about the Search. I was trying, but it said there were no matches and I should try some different terms. So then I searched "Frodo" in all open forums, entire post, with no other restrictions, figuring that would be common enough to get some results, but I got the same message. What is wrong with the Search?
Sharkû
03-21-2004, 03:04 PM
Guided Mode and Enhanced Mode
Guided Mode pops up a box when you click a button asking what you want to be input in that style. Enhanced Mode simply inserts an opening tag, you do your typing, then click the button again and a closing tag is inserted.
Highlighting the text to modify and then clicking on the button is available in both modes.
Groups
User groups are mainly one way to handle permissions and privileges. They are not implemented as we have been handling this otherwise, but there could well be a group 'Canon Forum' of users who have access to the private canon forum.
Can a normal user input the mouse-over popup which describes the link in question
The hover-message is actually a preview of the beginning of the first post.
Private Message Coloured Status Bar
From what I can tell, the bar represents PMs in your inbox (red), sent items (yellow), and free space (green), giving a graphical representation of the space occupied and available.

Calendars and Reminders
By clicking on CALENDAR at the top task bar you access the forums public calendar. This contains the birthdays of users who entered their date in their profile, and anything administration might consider important.
You can access your private calendar by selecting Private instead of Public on the Calendar Jump dropdown on the bottom right and hitting GO.
There you can add private events which only you can access, because the private calendars depend on the user name. After you've added an event, you can select 'Add reminder for this event' on the following screen.

Editing Calendar Events
After you've entered a date into your private calendar (see above), you can bring up the event's overview by clicking on it. You can see the description you entered, request a reminder for the event, and edit or delete the event under Event options.
Adding events to your private calendar is allowed for all users. This is how it is set, and I have verified it by creating a test account and editing its calendar.

Some great new functions. Particularly welcome is the fact that Quotes, Italicised words etc now get placed where the cursor is in a reply message, rather than at the end as they did previously. That's going to save a lot of cutting and pasting ...
One slight problem I've noticed. Deleted posts now appear on a thread as .. well ... deleted posts, whereas before they were simply deleted never to be seen again. Is there any way to change this, as they are cluttering up a few threads in the Quiz Room?
Also, is there still an issue with posting messages under 10 words, as this could cause problems in the Quiz and Quotes Rooms where messages are often only a few words (Yes that's correct etc)?
Otherwise, the changes all seem to me to be for the better. :)

Well...I have some rants.
~ The message icons are at the bottom of the text area. Hard to reach.
~ Those tool-thingies, italics and stuff. Hard to determine. Hard to see, even.
Well, that's it, then. But, even if these weren't addressed, I'd get used, then forget I ever ranted about them.

Saucepan: One slight problem I've noticed. Deleted posts now appear on a thread as .. well ... deleted posts, whereas before they were simply deleted never to be seen again. Is there any way to change this, as they are cluttering up a few threads in the Quiz Room? If I’m not mistaken, the deleted post/thread notices are available only to mods. There is “delete post” and there is “physically remove post”. Only the latter actually 86-es the post from the database, while the former may be restored.

Aah, but (going back to my wee avatar problem) I did click on the "Edit Avatar" link and it gave me this lovely message:

Avatars are small graphics that are displayed under your username whenever you post.

Note: if you have a custom avatar selecting this option will delete it.
And that, as they say, is it. No box to put in my URL, no option of uploading, nothing.

Aha! All is revealed (or not ;) ). Thanks pio and Underhillo. :)
What about the lower limit to the number of words in a message, though? Is that still an issue? And, if so, is it possible to remove it (at least for the Quiz and Quotes Rooms)?
Also, what's with the green box after each member's post count telling me (when my cursor hovers over it) that they have started the path to adventure?
Firefoot
03-22-2004, 06:01 PM
Saucepan Man - I think the green box is like User Ratings on UBB because under "member list" everyone has a green box under the column "reputation." And also there is a little icon that looks like a scale underneath everyone's name that if you hover the mouse over it says "Add to _____'s reputation." If you click on it you get a little thing that says (I clicked on yours):

Add to Reputation: The Saucepan Man

Hmmm it's nice, but being the typical human that I am, I don't like change, but I'll get over it. One thing though... It's not really important, but it might mess things up a little. I noticed that the calendar is off a day somehow. Mine and two other's birthdays are on April 6 which is a Tuesday this year. However this calendar has it on the 5th but still on a Tuesday. Strange things are afoot at the BD Calendar. But anyhoo, I don't care that much how it looks, just so long as it's got all the normal content. Heck this place could be laid out like word document, I'd still come. (It just wouldn't be as cool) ;)

Yes, I find the 'reputation' thing very confusing as well. How do you know how you've been rated? And what's the logic of being able to give comments on a post if there's no way for the person being commented on to see them?
In some cases it says "X is unknown" (Firefoot, I've seen such a thing on yours). How do you mean, unknown? We see the name, we see the post...
I noticed that too, on Firefoot's. Then I 'added to Firefoot's reputation' and next time I saw it, it said 'Firefoot has started on the path to adventure' so maybe that means you've been rated?
Very confuzzling, this. But I like the unconfuzzling parts of the new forum, and I think it looks very nice.

I have several questions about features on the 3.0 upgrade.
First, when you click on a poster's profile, there is a designation to the right of the screen labelled "user options". When I tried to bring this up, it said the following:
Child of the 7th Age, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons........
At first, I assumed this was because I was looking at someone else's profile, but the same thing happened when I clicked on my own profile.
What are "user options" and should they be accessible to a poster?
Second, when I looked at the list of people online that appears at the bottom of the main forum page, I noticed that some of the posters had small green cross marks immediately after their names. What does this symbol mean?
Thank you....Child of the 7th Age

I know this question has been asked before, but it keeps on getting buried under other stuff.
How do you change an avatar? When I click on the link "edit avatar" it has the option to not have an avatar, but it doesn't have an URL box or anything like that. To experiment, I clicked on the do not have an avatar option, hoping that an URL box would appear after the change had been processed, but that did not happen, and now I have no avatar.
Alas, the sacrifieces of experimenting. ;)
Cheers!

I wondered about those 'User Options' Child mentioned also.
Child - I think the little green 'plus-signs' show the people on your 'buddy list'.
If you log in and choose the 'invisible' mode, your name will show in that bottom list with a little asterisk following it.

Pio,
I think you are right.... Now, that I think of it, all the people who had "pluses" were on my buddy list. I will try the "invisible" trick....
OK, one more question for anyone out there.... Why do phrases like "1 viewing" or "2 viewing" appear after the name of the forum in the general menu? At first, I assumed that it was the number of people viewing that particular forum. But the numbers don't always seem to coordinate with the names actually appearing in the forum itself. Perhaps it is the number of members but excludes any guests?

Who's Online and people currently viewing forums aren't updated in exact real time, which can result in minor discrepancies, too.
The avatar thing _should_ work, but I know there's a bug hiding somewhere. We'll have to look into it, I think.
As for reputations, you can view your current standing by clicking on the scale next to any of your posts. In the window which pops up, you can also see what ratings, if any, you got for that specific post, and read any comments.

Reputations are based on what people think of the posts you make. People can either agree with your post or disagree with it. The captions will change to reflect your overall reputation as related to the quality of your posts . I'm not going to give out the list of reputation captions, though. People will just have to earn enough reputation points to find out what they are.

I am sure Mr. Underhill and BW will appreciate the fact that I can now set sticky threads in my own forum. Thank-you, vBulletin.
So far, I like the new format very much even though I am still learning it.
One new feature which I think is particularly valuable is that we can now post opinions on the quality of individual posts. The rating feature on the old software really amounted to little more than popularity about posters but this feature now allows us to comment on the posts--and even more importantly, give reasons for our opinions. Now, reputations really can be more about the quality of writing and ideas than personalities. We don't want this to be a barrow of --um, can I get away with this--ill-repute.
Mister Underhill
03-24-2004, 12:50 PM
Another interesting factoid about reputation is that the higher your reputation is, the more weight your opinion carries when you rate other members' posts. It's a pretty complex little system of calculations.
Goldberry
03-24-2004, 03:09 PM
I like this new version, but I've hardly explored it at all. What I have seen seems interesting. The "reputation" system surely is a step up from the rating system. And it looks like there are some neat little features which I'm looking forward to check out. (plus, we've still got this groovy smilie... :smokin: )
But I'm also having the minor avatar problem. When I click "edit avatar," I get the same message that LePetitChoux posted.

Why are some people's reputation boxes blue but most people's are green? Does the box change to blue if your reputation is not good?
The Barrow-Wight
03-24-2004, 08:39 PM
Reputations start out at a default value of 10 points. All members with a reputation greater than 0 have a green icon. If your reputation falls below 0, it will turn blue. That means it's time to check your User CP to see why people are rating your posts downward.

Wow, the new boards are quite impressive! :) I'm getting a little more aquainted with the graphics and such, but I noticed that when you enter, say, Middle-earth-Mirth, if you hold your mouse still for a moment (in a space by, or on, a topic link), a white text box comes up.
Edit: I've now found out this box reveals the first post of the topic that you hold your mouse next to.

The 'post shrinkage' already happened in the move from UBB to VBulletin, as you can see in the older VB Questions thread, and is due to the fact that VBulleting excluded some old posts (in closed threads and for IIRC) from counting towards your total. I lost exactly 400 posts, for example.
I can't see how new posts get lost; certainly not if they did actually appear and it wasn't a software/connection error. Please verify that and report back.
The max number of images in a thread makes sense IMO. Perhaps smilies could be excluded from it, but why should they.

Submitting something to a forum is like sending an email; the people who read your message can't read your body language, and they can't hear your tone of voice. Most of us are not skilled enough as writers to always express sarcasm/kidding/whatever else in our posts; smileys help us do that and save a whole lot of confusion, and possibly offense. If you have a large post, or are trying to express a "compound emotion" (like: :D ;) ) it stands to reason that you will have more than three smileys in a post.

I notice many people are still having problems adding an avatar. Here's what you do.
(1) Click 'User CP'
(2) 'Edit Avatar'
(3) Either enter the URL of your avatar (it must reside on space you 'own') or Browse your hard drive for a good picture file.
(4) Click 'Save Changes'
All registered users are able to upload an avatar. Please post a comment here if you are unable. No need to comment when you are successful. We will see your avatar.

Okay, lost some posts...whatever, I didn't need them anyway.
All of this is so...New! After coming back from a month of absence to this brand new design. Even as I'm typing this post I look around my screen and am bewildered. Luckily I haven't run into any real problems. Something back when the forum was first updated bugged the Proxy blocks on my computer and for ever after until yesterday, I haven't been able to view threads. It works now that I have gotten it unstuck, but what on earth could have been read wrong?

I kind of like this new look. I hated it at first, but it was better than the other VBulletin version. Thanks!
Anyway, I was wondering.. Last time, I heard rumours of a spell checker. Is this the version where there is a spell checker? *giggles and hopes for a spell checker* :)

The problem with the spell check was and it is that it is only possible as a server- and bandwidth-heavy application offered by a third party. VBulletin had one years ago, but the spell check offer wasn't continued, and since thebn VBB no longer comes with the option. I'm not sure there are easy and comfortable, and not to forget free ways to integrate a spell check plugin to our board. For the meantime, you're best off using a word processor or a free online spell checker I'm afraid.

Curiously, some green spiders are showing up in the "Who's on-line" screen.
To be more specific they seem as though they might be guests, as they are green, but instead of listing "Guest" my snap shot shows two that read Googlebot (Google) Spider and one that reads Zyborg (Looksmart) Spider. Are these spiders poisonous? If not what does this designation mean? That they have found the site via a search engine?
Sharkû
03-31-2004, 03:12 AM
That they have found the site via a search engine?
Yup, you're perfectly right. In some cases you can easily tell with which search engine, too. I have to admit I do not know the exact way in which spiders are registered on Who's online, but I suppose you become a normal guest once you move from the originally linked destination to somewhere else on the site.

Mister Underhill
03-31-2004, 11:02 AM
Actually I think the "spiders" are bot programs that scan the web, caching links, pages, and content for use by search engines. So when you see one, it means that an automated program is "visiting" the Downs.

I was having the same problem in the Shire with one of our very long informational posts. Many of the sections on it were in "bold".
I had to go back and remove all of the previous "bold"s and change them to CAPS to get the edit to go through.
Is there any way to resolve this restriction problem for the TftE forum and the RPG fora?

I am having a different problem with editing, also in the Shire. I do not know if this is a problem with the site, or AOL who is my ISP.
My new posts go through just fine. However, yesterday and today, the posts I edit give me a note that the website has "timed out". It took me about eight tries to get an edit through. I did keep checking on another window so I knew when it finally "clicked".
Again, this may be solely a coincidence, but these posts did have some text in bold.

As I looked at my post, I have found out that it had only one title in bold and that was it. I have several little parts underlined but that is mostly it. What I'm trying to post is an 11 page long post about an almost finish part of our work. I wonder if the reason that it can't be posted is that it exceeds the forum limit size of a post or if it is something else entirely.
Just to note that they are far more longer posts in that section of the forum that existed before the migration to VBulletin.
The message that i get from the forum is: Invalid Thread specified. If you followed a valid link, please notify the webmaster

I have encountered similar problem. Solution was found as to split the post into parts
Sharkû
04-05-2004, 05:09 AM
I think it has to do with posts being especially long, and causing errors during connection/'upload' of the message. There is no limit on post length per se, but errors are more likely to occur on long posts I guess. Always save long posts somewhere (word processor, cache), retry if failed; split into two parts as mentioned by Heren if it still fails.

HerenIstarion - check your PM's and give it a try!
Scroll to the bottom of a PM you've been sent. At the bottom right corner is a 'forward' button and a 'quote' button. Choose the 'quote' button - it sends back a reply to the one who sent you the PM you want to reply to that includes the PM text sent you.

Forgive me my ignorance and also if this has been brought up before but...
I am having a devil of a time figuring out how to print out a portion of my printable version without the last sentence on most pages getting decapitated. The curious thing is that the bottom of the bounding box prints out just fine.
The method I have been using is to select the portion of the text I want to print and paste it into a Word document, printing from there. I have tried to change margins and fonts, but to no avail. Has anyone else been experiencing this? Have you found a good way to print with out printing the whole thread's page?

On the last version I had the opportunity to look at my Buddy List and send a PM from it. Now when I look at the buddy list it simply lists the names as black text on a white background with no way of clicking on one or a number of them to send a PM.
Am I missing a way to send PM's directly from the Buddy List?

Now I know that the little green box (the one that says "Gorwingel has started on the path to adventure... blah..blah" when you put your cursor over it) has been asked about before, and that we kind of know what it is for. But I was just wondering... today I was just doing my regular reading of various threads, and I noticed that Saucepan Man had two little green boxes instead of just one! *gasp*
Now is the extra box because of Saucepan Man having many messages in his reputations, or is it because of something else?
An answer would be greatly appreciated

Barrow Wight-- the way that PM'ing is set up right now, the system automatically saves a copy of each PM I send, unless I remember to tell it not to. It also defaults to "Ask For Read Receipt", or whatever it's called.

I went into my profile and checked the option not to have an email response, but I'm still getting them. Do you know why, and how I can fix it? You can manage your subscribed threads in the "List Subscriptions" area of the User Control Panel. Alas, I have yet another question. Do links in your signature affect your character count? The reason I ask is because I see people with sigs longer than mine, yet I cannot add another short sentence in mine. In fact, I was changing one of the links (replacing it rather), and that's all I changed but the sig said that I had gone over my 250 character count...

Also, is there a way to change the option that subscribes me to a thread so that the default is to not subscribe? I don't always remember to change the little box before I post, and the swarms of e-mail can get quite bothersome, particularly to people with limited mailbox space. Do I just have to try and remember every time, or is there something else I can do?

I'm too lazy to verify it, but hyperlinks and unless I'm mistaken tags used to count towards the character limit in signatures, and likely still do, yes. In a way it makes sense, too, since code is code.
Thread subscription per default / do not subscribe can be edited in your Control Panel - edit options.

Click on your User CP.

You want the second space which says, " Upload an Avatar From Your Computer". Beside the white space it will have a small grey button that says "Browse." Click that button.
When you push that, it will open a window with all of the documents, files, and pictures in it. From here on out, it's just like selecting and navigating in My Pictures. So, go to my Pictures, click a picture that is within the 64 by 64 pixels limitations, and double click. THe window will disappear and the file name will appear in the white box.
Push save changes.

I have noticed that some days the ‘Active Topics’ list can be a few pages long, and at other times it is quite brief. Putting it down to a slow day, I haven’t thought much about it. Now I am not so sure. This morning only one thread was listed when I checked, but I know that more than that had been posted on as I received email notices. Does anyone know what criteria the program is looking at? It is beginning to take on a magical, or at least arbitrary, aspect in my mind.

24 hours prior to time of checking, as far as I know
As for seeing only one, probably your browser had the cookies stored of the previous checking, when indeed there was only one new topic. Next time try to refresh if it looks funny
This, or something else I can't think of :)

Ahhh...the magic cookies! That would make perfect sense. I only wish I could remember if I had checked it previously, then I would know for certain. But alas, it was too early in the morning for my mind that to accept that particular cookie!

A minor point and not of much importance.
When I quote thuslythe quoted text becomes italicised. Any way to stop this?
EDIT: Well, that's just odd. Usually it decides to become italic. Any explanations?

It's a different set of instructions/tags for the 2 types of quoting.
The first example has the quotes between these two: [Q UOTE] [/QUOTE]
(with the 'Q' of course, not followed by a space.)
And in the second the quote is being referenced: [Q UOTE=the guy who be short] [/QUOTE]
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you don't want your quote italicised, copy and paste it between the first set of tags above.
You can use the 'quote' icon above the 'Reply to Thread' box . . . or just type out the tags yourself.

Well, this isn't really a question, but more of a feeble request: Is there any way with 3.0 to have more than 20 PM's per inbox? I'm getting around ten a day, and I'm spending around 15 minutes cleaning my PM box every day. It's starting to get on my nerves, but that's what I get for sending them out so much, I guess. I can make due with 20 as I fear I must, but is there any chance of upping the number?

Is there any way... to have more than 20 PM's per inbox?
No, at least not anytime soon. The cap of 20 was set intentionally to encourage public discussion rather than private talks. At one time we had almost as much traffic in PMs as we did in regular posts, so we were forced to put a limit on it. Though we understand that people want to occasionally communicate on a more personal basis, bandwidth isn't free, and there's always e-mail.

Moderators are responsible for a particular area of the forum; they may have just one sub-forum or forum in which they keep an eye on things, or several. Administrators are responsible for the general policy of the whole forum and have powers that moderators do not, as well as being able to step in anywhere as a moderator if needed.

But seriously, what if you had to create a poll? Could you submit a poll proposal to Mighty Wighty to let him give you the power to create a poll, even just once? Or do I have to sacrifice my newborn (if I have one, which I don't)?

To be honest, I don't know how I got the right to post polls. I was surprised to find out that this right is not universal. My theory is that at one point everyone was allowed to post polls, and then one loudmouthed pollster (*sheepish grin, toe digging into the sand*) started posting poll after poll and the Great and Mighty Barrow Wighty decided that enough was enough and restricted the pollsteristas and -os to make sure that the forum did not become overwhelmed.
Honestly, that's just a theory -- I've never heard anything about this from a mod or admin.
As to non-pollsteristos and -as who wish to start a poll, you could always PM someone with the polling power and make a suggestion. Several Downers have contacted me with such ideas and these have resulted in some interesting polls. To be frank, though, there have been a couple of polls suggested to me that I've not put up because I wasn't sure how they would work or go over so perhaps that's the point of restricting access...?
And oh yeah, there ain't no-one I'd give my kiddies up to! Grrrrrr.....

When I put my mouse over someone's reputation boxes, the usual line for someone with 11 boxes is "X has mounted Taniquetil again". However, twice I have seen weird ones. The first time, it said "X wonders what happened to the reputation system." The second time, on a different person, it said "X steals taters from confused gaffers" :) Is that supposed to happen?
Estelyn Telcontar

Yes, that's normal - there are several brief, witty interludes in the reputations, between mounting Taniquetil the first and the second time. I can answer that for you! You highlight the part you want then right click and copy it. Then you highlight it again once you have placed it where you want then wrap it in quote tags (the 1 on the top righthand side) Then you put a = sign and the persons name (in the quote box part) I hope that makes sense.:D
Estelyn Telcontar
04-26-2006, 01:41 AM
There's an easier and faster way to quote someone's post - see the little yellow "quote" box in the lower right corner of the post you want to quote? Click on that, and it automatically opens a new post window with that post included as a quote. If you don't want to quote the whole thing, delete the rest of it, and post your comments and additions below. Voila!

Yes, I had similar problem. Don't you use the tags like "right" or "center" often? They count as a new line always. But yes, definitely there are certain moments when the program counts the lines as more than they actually are. To be precise: it happened to me while posting this:
text A[TAG RIGHT]text B
text C[END TAG RIGHT]
Now the tag "right" in itself creates a new line and the program rightly counts it. All the texts (A, B, C) are shorter than one line, I checked it and 100% there is no problem in it. It should look like this:
text A
text B (in the right corner)
text C (in the right corner)
However, it says that it is more than three lines. But when I do for example this:
text A
text B
[TAG RIGHT]text C[END TAG RIGHT]
therefore, a thing that looks like
text A
text B
text C (in the right corner)
it does not write any alert message to me. It seems illogical.

Oh, you think it really is that silly? I thought it counts characters (it indeed does) and it knows how many characters make a line, and it does not depend on how big the textbox is. After all, the size of the window may be different... ???

Well, I didn't really think I had that many characters in my signature...showing up on the forum, each line is fairly short in length.
But I did manage to figure it out. I had to merge the last two lines into one line, then align left the last line so that it would appear as three separate lines. Very odd...but at least it worked.

But it won't let me go to it. I wondered if it was my IE acting up, so I tried Firefox, but still to no avail. Somehow I managed to get to Noggie's (don't ask me how I did that) but I keep getting some error. I know it's really not that big of a deal, but it irks me that it won't work. Any suggestions?

Right-click on it and tell it to open in a new browser or new tab.

Aha! Success! Thanks Morm! :)
This was already asked in the "Best Avatar" thread, but I think there was no answer.
Is it possible to upload an animated avatar? I'm told "You may not upload animated images." even when both size criterias are taken into account.

Volo, animated avatars tend to be quite distracting (we've had some in the past!), and since we are here to read what others have posted, not to see a site full of avatars (there are other sites for that!), we'd rather have members choose non-animated pictures as their avatars. It's really only supposed to be a visible identification of the person who's writing so that you can recognize others' posts easily.
Yes, sure. It's ok with me, but I was just asking if it is intentional that one can't upload them anymore.

There have been problems with the clock once again. Any chance of fixing it? :)

I have brought the problem to the administrators' notice. I hope they will be able to fix it to show the correct time soon; we may need to be patient, if it's a time-consuming task.

Ho-ho-ho! :D
Sorry, couldn't resist.
I gave up with the clock some time ago. I used to wait until the BD clock said 12:00 before posting the news. Now I don't bother. :(

Just pointing out that we don't have the calendar for this year. :)
Sorry I've been on this forum for over two years now and I still don't know how to do polls. :( the FAQs are no use. ah disregard I just searched, I don't think I'm important enough to do polls.

I hope this is the right place to bring this up!
I recently changed my e-mail address here and set my options for "No e-mail notification" on subscribed threads. Problem is, I'm still getting the e-mails, some twenty or so each day.
It's a minor matter really, just thought I would bring it to someone's attention.
