ok, I'm going to try to keep this simple but since it's me, I probably end up confusing everyone. :)

the idea of this game is that someone thinks of a word (ME related of course) and gives the letter it begins with. The others then try to think of a word that begins with the given letter and then ask a question which could be answered with the word the asker has thought up. If the one who thought up the word in the first place can't answer the question he has to give the next letter of his word. Before the person who has set the clue gives the next letter he has to ask for an answer from the asker. after the asker has given the correct answer the setter of the clue can give the next letter. others should not ask questions before the setter of the clue has given the next letter. Confusing, I know :) but an example should clear this a bit.

I could think about "Herugrim" so I would post:
- It starts with H.
"Hobbit" could spring up to someones mind so he could ask:
-is it a race in ME?
I could answer:
-no, its not the Haradrim
then Mister x, as I am going to call the other guy from now on, could ask the same question again or he could try to narrow down the possible answers and ask:
-is it a race in ME which likes to live in holes.
I would of course answer:
-no, it's not a hobbit.
then mister x could ask:
-does it protect you from harm?
I can't think anything that protects you from harm and begins with 'H' so I have to answer:
-I can't think of anything
mister x then has to say his answer:
- a Helmet
now I would have to give the next letter:
-the next letter is 'e'
mister x could then ask:
-was it used at the battle of the pelennor fields?
I could asnwer:
- no, it's not the Heads that were catapulted into minas tirith.
mister x asks the same question:
-was it used at the battle of the pelennor fields?
I can't think up anything else that was used at the battle so I have to say:
- yes, it is Herugrim.

I hope this cleared things up. :)

before I completely confuse you all I'll start off: my word begins with 'S'

and my apologies if a similar thread already exists.

EDIT: as there has been some confusion with the rules, I will try to clarify them as saucepan suggested.

the same answer cannot be given more than once to the questions being asked by the guessers. That's why, for example, we can keep on asking "Is it a Dwarf?" and expect a different answer each time. If the person who has set the clue cannot give an answer, then he/she must ask the person who asked the question to give their answer. If their answer is one which has previously been given, the game simply carries on.
the person who has set the clue needs to keep in mind the answers already given and guessers should try to avoid asking a question to which the only answer (or at least the only answer that they can think of) is one which has already been given.

Is it a an evil creature?

paavo
07-20-2004, 02:07 PM

and no, it's not Samwise. :)

EDIT: to Evisse: no it's not Sauron (if you can say Sauron is a creature :) )

to Evisse and Saucepan man: it's not Shelob.

if you don't get the anwer your looking for you can simply ask the same question again.Paavo, doesn't that mean that you should have given separate answers to the questions that Evisse and I asked? I know that this was the last game, but I just want to be clear on the rules.

Anyway, as to Firefoot's clue:

Is it a mountain?

Nilpaurion Felagund
07-21-2004, 08:25 PM
Is it an Elven bow?

Paavo, doesn't that mean that you should have given separate answers to the questions that Evisse and I asked? I know that this was the last game, but I just want to be clear on the rules.

that's completely true. it just seemed that you were both after Shelob so I thought I'd answer to both of you. I did intend to say that if the answer doesn't satisfy you, just ask the same question again, but somehow I didn't.
sorry for the confusion :(

And Firefoot you are one shrewd woman ;) Brego is excatly what I was looking for! And I thought I was clever and would get the next letter... :)

It's still not Bombadil. ;)

paavo
07-22-2004, 02:16 PM
I forgot to tell that you are actually not allowed to ask a question with an answer which has already been asked. my bad. :(

can it be seen only by few?

Is it a race?

The Perky Ent
07-22-2004, 09:03 PM
Is it the place where the Anduin empty's?

paavo
07-23-2004, 03:06 AM
The "Blue ring" AKA Vilya, which can only be seen by other rignbearers, is my answer. Next letter please. :p

The Saucepan Man
07-23-2004, 04:27 AM
OK, let's get the rules straight here.

Firefoot has given the answer "Bombadil" three times and "Bucklebury Ferry" twice. Now, my understanding is that the same answer cannot be given more than once to the questions being asked by the guessers. That's why, for example, we can keep on asking "Is it a Dwarf?" and expect a different answer each time. If the person who has set the clue cannot give an answer, then he/she must ask the person who asked the question to give their answer. I presume that, if their answer is one which has previously been given, the game simply carries on.

So, in the case of "Bombadil" above, I think that "Is it the eldest and fatherless?" was asked twice and "Is it someone unaffected by the Ring?" was also asked (by The Perky Ent). So, in response to the second two of these questions, Firefoot should have asked the guessers to come up with their answers. Since I doubt that they would have come up with anything other than "Bombadil", the game would have carried on without Firefoot revealing another letter. However, if The Perky Ent could have come up with another 'B' answer for someone unaffected by the Ring, then Firefoot would have had to have given another letter.

Assuming that this analysis is correct, the person who has set the clue needs to keep in mind the answers already given and guessers should try to avoid asking a question to which the only answer (or at least the only answer that they can think of) is one which has already been given. (You can check the answers previously given quite easily by scrolling through the posts below the "Reply" box.)

Sorry for being such an anorak about this, but it's as well to make sure that the rules are clear, particularly as this seems to me to be a rather good game. Paavo, would you mind editing your first post to clarify the position on this point?

Anyway, on with the game ...

Is it a mountain?

Firefoot
07-23-2004, 05:14 AM
The next letter is L.

It is not the Blue Mounains, and since the place where Anduin empties (Bay of Belfalas) does not start with "Bl", I suppose that makes that question not count.

Evisse the Blue
07-23-2004, 06:11 AM
Is it an entrance?

paavo
07-23-2004, 07:12 AM
thanks saucepan man, rule clarification was sure needed. I have now edited my first post and as you can see I have "borrowed" some of your text, since you put the rules in such intelligible form (something what I cannot do) :)

is it a place where only two hobbits have been?

Firefoot
07-23-2004, 08:25 AM
It is neither the Black Gate nor the Black Land.

Firefoot
07-23-2004, 09:03 AM
It is not the Black Captain.

I can't find any hobbits that start with Bl, so if you will provide your answer I will give you the next letter.

Thorongil
07-23-2004, 09:06 AM
Is it Blanco, one of the first hobbits in the Shire?

Morsul the Dark

Um...Gil-Galad. I haven't given the letter yet, so I'm just gonna ignore that one.

The letter is....E!

Firefoot
07-23-2004, 10:57 AM
Does it know all about runes?

The Perky Ent
07-23-2004, 10:59 AM
Well, I don't think I know that one. And I think the rule is, if you can't guess it, you have to give the next letter.

So....El

Gil-Galad
07-23-2004, 10:59 AM
is it a race?

Morsul the Dark
07-23-2004, 11:00 AM
is it a half-elf from rivendell?

The Perky Ent

It is not elves or Elrond

Tuor of Gondolin
07-23-2004, 11:07 AM
Is it an object?

The Perky Ent
07-23-2004, 11:09 AM
It isn't elessar

Firefoot
07-23-2004, 11:09 AM
Is it also known as Varda?

The Perky Ent
07-23-2004, 11:10 AM
It isn't Elbereth

paavo
07-23-2004, 11:10 AM
Well, I don't think I know that one. And I think the rule is, if you can't guess it, you have to give the next letter.

actually you have to wait for the asker to give the right answer before giving the next letter. since otherwise the asker could ask for the same answer with a slightly different question. I have edited this also in my first post.

The Perky Ent
07-23-2004, 11:11 AM
ok, well, I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter, since I've already given the next letter, but now i know.

paavo
07-23-2004, 11:13 AM
is it someone who could be mistaken for a member of the Rohirrim?

Firefoot
07-23-2004, 11:13 AM
The one that I had in mind was Elrond.

Is it another name for a tall mountain?

Morsul the Dark
07-23-2004, 11:15 AM
is a brouche that Galadriel gave as a gift?

The Perky Ent
07-23-2004, 11:18 AM
I thought that might have been it, but anyways....hmm. I'm stumped both ways. I can't get the mountain, unless you were going for Erebor, which I highly doubt. As for the mistaken Rohirrim, the only one I can think of is Eowyn, and that's not right. So, if you can, give me your answers, and we can get this over with.

Firefoot
07-23-2004, 11:19 AM
Elerrina is another name for Taniquetil.

The Perky Ent
07-23-2004, 11:20 AM
And unless you mean the phial of Earendil, then it's not Elfstone

paavo
07-23-2004, 11:21 AM
my answer is Elrohir. Rohir could be translated "horse-lord" and thus Elrohir could be mistaken for a rider of rohan.

The Saucepan Man

Paavo is right. The game only works if, when the person setting the clue cannot answer a question, the question-asker gives the answer that they had in mind. Only when they have done so should the next letter be given. Otherwise people could ask questions to which there is no answer that fits and thereby get all the letters.

It would be best of people hold off from asking questions until the asker has given the answer that they had in mind and the next letter has been given. Otherwise it tends to get somewhat confusing.

Goodness, me. I go away for a couple of days and come back to face all these tricksy questions!

Oh well, I shall do my best ...

Is it where they found the survivor? It's not the Misty Mountains (I'm thinking of Celebrian, but you probably have something different in mind).

is it no mine it is a tombIt's not Moria.

Is it one who came back?Hmm, this one again. Well, this time it's not Melian (who returned to Aman following the death of Thingol).

Is it an enemy of the Enemy? It's not Meriadoc Brandybuck.

Is it a town in the Shire? It's not Michel Delving.

Does it have white horses?Gah! I was hoping not to have to see this question again. It's not Meduseld (white horse banners).

is it something that people came to see from afar places, but not a single man has seen it?It's not the Master-Stone (of the Palantiri).

Is it a steward of Gondor? It's not Mardil Voronwe.

is it an elvish realm? It's not Mithlond.

I have a horrible feeling that I am going to see some of those questions again. I also have a horrible feeling that I am just staving off the inevitable, and that I will be forced to reveal the next 2 or 3 letters very soon ... :D

Is it an enemy of the Enemy, that the Elves are glad to see?Are you implying that Elves aren't glad to see Merry? ;)

Evisse, you're not thinking of Mithrandir, are you? I gave him as the answer to an earlier question.

Assuming that you are not, who could it be? Malach Aradan? He spent a lot of time with Elves.

Well, it's not Malach Aradan. :D

But still I haven't found my answer. So:

Is it an enemy of the Enemy whom the Elves are glad to see?

is it manwe?Nope.

Is it a secondary river in Beleriand? It is not the Mindeb.

Does it have white horses?By Jove, I think that I may have got it at last! It is not the Moon.

Is it an enemy of the Enemy whom the Elves are glad to see?Hopefully this one too. It is not Minastir.

Is it golden? It is not a Mallorn Tree.

Hold yer horses! :)

It would be best of people hold off from asking questions until the asker has given the answer that they had in mind and the next letter has been given. Otherwise it tends to get somewhat confusing.

So we're supposed to wait until paavo answers his question and Saucepan gives the next letter. Afterwards, some of the questions we're asking now, may not even apply.

The Saucepan Man
07-27-2004, 03:32 AM
Once paavo gives his answer, I will give the next letter. You can then decide whether your question still applies or whether you need to ask a different one.

It occurs to me that giving into questions in this way can be a good tactical move, as it may allow me to avoid having to try to answer questions which I know will come up again but for which I have no answer. :p ;)

You know paavo, this really is a good game. :)

paavo
07-27-2004, 03:40 AM
to tell you the truth saucepan man, you already answered to my question. :)
the word I was looking for was Mallorn. Not Mallorn generally but the Mallorn Sam got from galadriel and planted in the shire. I suppose no man ever saw since "big folk" were forbidden to enter inside the shire.

thanks. :) I like this game too, I've been playing it with my family for years (although not ME related).

Evisse the Blue
07-27-2004, 04:46 AM
My answer is Menelvagor - the constellation. It had a special significance to the Elves, who sang when it appeared in the sky - as it reminded them of the final battle. More than that, it's mentioned that he represents Turin, who will fight with Melkor at that final battle, so he's the enemy of the Enemy.

The Saucepan Man
