View Full Version : Frodo as Gollum?

In The Two Towers EE, there was a part in the appendices that said they had shot a scene that showed what would happen to Frodo if he had the Ring to long. Because of the movie length, they cut it out.
While looking through pics from the RotK EE, I stumbled upon this pic. Do you think they slid it into RotK EE somewhere? What are your thoughts?

There were a couple more, but here is one of them. :)

I personally hope that it's not in there, I'd have nightmares. :(

However, aside from my wants, I don't think it would be in it. I mean, where would they put it? It's supposed to happen when Frodo's talking with Faramir.

oh, yeah, I've seen that. CoE is a great site. yes, that was a shameless plug.;)

Anywhee, I hope it's not in the RotK EE. Or at least, if it is there, I hope it's not as, um, freakish.

I think it's a cool looking scene, but there's nowhere to put it in RotK, so don't look for it. :)

I wonder if it's only me but the link doesn't seem to be working. Anyway, I think I've seen that kind of pic before that you're talking about and I have to say that I wouldn't probably like a scene involving it. I like to think that the impact of the ring was something that had an effect on its bearer from inside, like mentally. Gollum had had "family troubles" after finding the ring and he was banished. He crawled into the caves of Misty Mountains and there his body adjusted itself to the dark and barren environment. The ring consumed his mind rather than his body. His appearance was a consequence of the corruption of his mind.

Now, if we play with this theory, if Frodo had kept the ring, would his appearance have decayed or only his mind? Like, would Frodo have changed his diet, become afraid of the sun, wandered to the mountains, or what? Okay, Maybe I strayed a bit off topic...so basicly: I wouldn't like it. And besides, I agree with The Only Real Estel about that there's no suitable place for it in RotK.

Yes, I thought about that. Meaning, would Frodo`s appearance change? and where would they put the scene? But it was just a question that I`ve been wondering about, and decided I`d ask the people of the BDs. ;)

There is probably a suitable place for it in RotK. It would be a brief flash-forward, like Elrond's narration of Arwen's fate should the latter marry Aragorn. It would probably be narrated by Gollum or Gandalf.

First off, I would like to say thats one hideous picture. I would like to see that somewhere in ROTK EE, for it does look interesting. But, truthfully Frodo wouldn't have had it long enough to get him to start resembling Gollum. If Gollum hadn't of bitten of Frodo's finger and accidently stumbled into Mount Doom, the Ring would have been claimed before Frodo got out of Mount Doom. So, I really don't see a possibility of Frodo containing the Ring long enough to get him to turn into hideousness. I would just like to see it because it could sort of be like this "future sign" or future "premonition" if you want to put it that way.

Oh, come on, guys. It's not that creepy. ;)

I was quite irritated when I discovered they'd dropped that idea for TTT -- it would have been awesome. I don't know how they would put it in RotK, and I don't think they will, but I'll be very happy if they manage to pull it off.

Ok, Encaitare, I'll give you that. Frodo deformed isn't as hideous as Gollum during the ROTK flashback at the beginning, I will admit lol. I guess my fan man side caught on, that will happen occasionally.

True, but if you have seen the documentary in the TTT EE on the scene in question here, then you've heard PJ's description of what the scene is for. He said that it was a picture of what Frodo would become if he were allowed to keep the Ring (given the proper amount of time). So it seems that Jackson was most likely never intending to mean that Frodo would have, beyond a shadow of a doubt, ended up looking like that, twisted & wretched.

Yeah, Elijah`s good looks can`t be blocked out easily. :D

That`s true, Boromir88, but what if Frodo turned aside from his quest, and hid somewhere (like Gollum) long enough that the ring could take hold of him completely?

Nimrodel a good possibility I think. :)

Man, that is one disgusting and freaky pic... Gollum was cuter...
but what if Frodo turned aside from his quest, and hid somewhere (like Gollum) long enough that the ring could take hold of him completely?
That couldn't have happened, from a historical point of view. Things were set in motion at that time, and Sauron was getting ready for to hunt high and low for that Ring while crushing Gondor and anyone who dared stand in his way in the process. Like Gandalf said, everything depended on speed. Considering that, Frodo could not have been in possession of the Ring for so long as to develop a Gollum-like appearance, Sauron's many spies would have caught up with him first. So such a thing is not possible even from a hypothetical point of view, it's totally irrelevant. They might as well have shown a picture with Frodo being tortured in the chambers of Barad-dur, that would have been much more likely to happen.

That`s a sad and horrible thought Evisse, but good point.
