'Eilinel the fair
thou shalt most surely find, and there
where she doth dwell and wait for thee
together shall ye ever be,
and sundered shall ye sigh no more.

The capital E gave it away. Eilinel does not appear that often. :)

I feel like straying from the Lay of Leithian:

Oh, but the T's confirmed my guessings of "and they say that I have -r----an blood and that I am half-Noldo. And that is not said ? ? in these days. "

There's more I can guess but I lack the relevant words.
"It is but a ? from being ? ? a Gnome to being ? God--ar---; (what on earth could this be? ) and that is dangerous."

There's just that one word I'm not sure about...

"and they say I have Eressëan blood, or that I am half-Noldo. And that is not said with love in these days. It is but a step from being called half a Gnome to being called God-ear--- ; and that is dangerous."

and the context is also mystifying! (bin ja gespannt auf des Rätsels Lösung :D )

Well, that cleared it! :)

"and they say I have Eressëan blood, or that I am half-Noldo. And that is not said with love in these days. It is but a step from being called half a Gnome to being called Godfearing ; and that is dangerous."

Could it be someone in Númenor in the time of Sauron's influence ?

Frodo to Sam, I guess. Sometime after the destruction of the ring? I wonder what 'that very day' refers to.

Btw, I thought you forgot an 'e' in di-d, and was wondering why the person was so happy to have died. :D

Guinevere
02-16-2007, 02:26 PM
but the speaker isn't Frodo.

If I tell you that the quote is from the epilogue, you'll perhaps guess who it is ;)

Rosie?

Guinevere

It's Andreth, answering Finrod Felagund's question: "Have you no hope then?"

The f's I had already all guessed and therefore not asked for them.

Here's what I got with some more guessing:

"Shall I be dragged before a rabble of wood-men with fetters upon me to hear what death they will give me? I will slay myself first, if my hands are left free."

"The kingdom now

no spilling of kindred blood by kin.
But bread nor rest shall find herein
these brothers who have set at naught
the house of Finrod."

Orodreth, now King of Nargothrond after the death of his brother Finrod, deciding what to do with Celegorm and Curufin. ('The Lay of Leithian', Canto X, lines 2896-2901, The History of Middle-earth: III. The Lays of Beleriand, p. 260.)

Guinevere

Absolutely correct, Faramir ! :)
I never expected anyone to take this thread up again after all this time, and I'm not sure if it's worthwhile to post a new quote now. It's been a looong time since I looked into HoME, and it doesn't look like anyone else is interested... Macalaure is too busy nowadays, I guess.

Faramir Jones
03-16-2010, 05:20 PM
Thanks for getting back to me on this, Guinevere!;)

I did have a new quote prepared; but I, like you, wonder if it's worth while posting it in this thread, due to the lack of interest.:( I'm thinking of posting it in the main thread, which has, I understand, taken more than just quotes from LotR.

Guinevere
03-17-2010, 06:47 PM
I don't think posting quotes from the HoME in the main Palantir thread is a good idea, because only very few people are familiar with them, so it wouldn't be quite fair. (Same with the "Minor works" )

The main "Palantir of Fortune" started out with only LotR, but already in 2003 quotes from the hobbit and the Silmarillion were used as well, and later U.T. quotes. In those days they had to close threads after 10-12 pages and start new ones to conserve bandwidth , and the later threads explained the rules at the heading. Later, when the site was upgraded all the old threads were joined together again.

Faramir Jones

Thanks for clearing the matter up, Guinevere.

You're right. It would be unfair to many if I started putting those kind of quotations in the main thread!;)
