View Full Version : Palantir of Fortune: Lost Tales/HoME
Tuor of Gondolin

What about a perhaps more challenging form of "Palantir of Fortune"
based on the less known CT edited Book Of Lost Tales and HoME?
(Unless it's too redundant to other games, at the discretion of moderators).
Citations could be drawn from poems, songs, and/or quotes.
1) It might be more challenging to not look up the quotes, unless stumped.
2) Where known, the speaker should also be identified, although many times
there is no specific speaker.

Oops! There are a couple of problems here.
1) I have erratic access to a computer (my old one can't get online and I have to use library ones)
2) It's been so long I forgot the quote. :D :o
So here's a new one. However, I can only check it 4-5 times a week, so you may need to be patient.

And while we are at it, did you forget your previous login pass or something? Is there difference between the post # 1 and #4 or are my eyes deceiving me? (yes, I indeed do mean 'of' and 'in' interoperability...)

Thanks for reminding, Guinevere. I forgot about this.
Well, I can't check right now, but I think it's:
Lady beloved, whom all Men,
whom Elfinesse, and whom all things
with fur and fell and feathered wings
should serve and love - arise! Away!
Put on thy cloak! Before the day
comes over Nargothrond we fly
to Northern perils, thou and I.
Sounds like Huan to Luthien.

Foresight is given to the Eldar in many things not far off, though seldom of joy, and I say to thee: thou shalt live long in the order of your kind, and he will go forth before thee and he will not wish to return.

One moment shall ye cease, and slake
your sting with morsel I here take!

Correct!
It's Lúthien to Daeron while she is imprisoned on Hírilorn.
Guinevere
09-22-2006, 05:35 AM
:) I just hurried here to tell you that I have finally found it!
But it is not while Luthien is imprisoned on Hirilorn (that's where I had looked for it before and why I couldn't find it!)
She says this to Daeron right after Melian told her that Beren was in a dungeon, and after that she asks Daeron to help her go and find Beren, and Daeron betrays her to Thingol.
Well, anyway, here is a new one, (this time not from the lays of Beleriand)

"A strange folk are we," he said. "now cold, now hot. First wrath, then ruth. Under your chieftain's feet or at his throat. Down with -ar-a--! Up with -a-t-or!

I guess the two words I can't get are names? (I have no idea about whom this is)

I originally only included the third line in order to make it easier for you and Tuor, because now there were actual names in it so you could maybe guess the origin... well, didn't work.

Macalaure
10-09-2006, 03:28 AM
No more waiting, I'm sorry...
'A strange folk are ye,' he said. 'now cold, now hot.
First wrath, then ruth. Under your chieftain's feet or at his throat.
Down with Hardang! Up with Manthor! Wilt thou go up?'
It's from volume 11, The Wanderings of Húrin.
When Húrin comes to Brethil he is less than unwelcome to Brandir's successor Hardang. Húrin is bitter and gets involved in an incident that gets him arrested. Manthor, relative of Hunthor, becomes his friend and defends him in the trial. The trial turns into a tumult and the Haladin revolt against their Halad. The sight of this makes Húrin speak this laconic statement.
I'm not telling the end of the story, but it is sad to see what the Folk of Haleth has come to. :(
So, your turn again, Guinevere!
Guinevere
10-09-2006, 02:16 PM

But Ulmo answered:
"Nonetheless Miriel died. (.....) And death is for the eldar an evil, that is a thing unnatural in Arda Unmarred, which must proceed therefore from the marring. For if the death of Miriel was otherwise , and came from beyond Arda it would not bring grief or doubt."
