Lommy, you mean the LotR collaborative game, right?
Lord of the Rings (http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_minisite.asp?eidm=58)
Haven't played it for a while, but it's a cracker - and most challenging (especially, I think, for two players).
Yeah, that was the one. I really liked it, it's brilliant. And I think it is quite challenging for two players, at first I wondered if it's possible to get to the end at all. (Although on second try we - or Lommy Gamgee, respectively, after poor me heroically sacrificed myself to be eaten by Sauron :D - made it almost to Mount Doom - although I think in the end, it's always "almost" and even one step closer makes a big difference.)
And then there is the latest in the set - Middle Earth Quest (http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_minisite.asp?eidm=82&enmi=Middle-earth Quest) - a game set in the 17 year period between Bilbo's eleventy-first Birthday Party and the departure of Frodo and company on the Quest of the Ring. The characters are invented, but the situations which arise in the game are familiar. I have only played it a few times so far, but I am impressed with how well the game designers have brought to life a period which is really only referred to in the back story sections of LotR.
Hmm, that actually looks very interesting. I might as well try to get my hands on that.
And well, you may not be working for the company, but maybe you could ask them to give you some small reward after such large scale advertising ;) I agree with you, though. Most importantly of all for me, the games are not just movie-based. ;)
P.S. Should we assign SpM's return to the Shire...?

Or we could make it more general and just assign all returns to the Downs by old members.

I should add that I do not work for Fantasy Flight Games - on the contrary, they have done well from me over the years - but it is fair to say that they are the premiere producers of Tolkien-themed board games. In consequence of which, I hereby consign them to the Shire. :)
Just be very, very careful if you visit games shop Orc's Nest off Shaftesbury Avenue because you will have your bank manager holding his head in despair (but will probably be helping the economy, or something). Follow that with a trip to Forbidden Planet up the road and you'll be single-handedly getting us out of recession. ;)

Or we could make it more general and just assign all returns to the Downs by old members.I could definitely assign that. I'm always so happy when someone I've missed reappears - especially if I haven't been keeping in touch with them elsewhere - and lately we've got Valier, Roa and SPM back. It's just wonderful. :D
I could also assign LotR related dreams. I had a very very scary dream where I was Frodo hiding from the Nazgûl in Crickhollow and seeing the black horses walking on the edges of the yard during the day and waiting for the sunset when the Nazgûl themselves would surely appear and knowing there's no way I can run away from them... it was really cool and made me want to read LotR. (I wonder where I was? Maybe in Hollin...)
PS. If I ever have money, it looks like I'm going to buy some board games. ;)

SNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's so wonderful.
(Although I wonder whether assigning snow to the Shire is not, in fact, something like assigning it to Mordor, because Sam actually did exactly the same on Caradhras, assigning snow to the Shire, but what he intended by it was rather closer to what we mean when we assign something to Mordor.)

When someone you love gets their heart's desire after a lot of hard work, wait and tribulation. My "baby" cousin has got a place at BRNC Dartmouth - after a near miraculous but slow recovery from an eye injury that nearly cost him his sight two years ago

While there are many complaints I have about my college, I do have to assign the wonderful opportunities that the school has to offer. We get a lot of guest speakers and such, but silly me, I didn't take advantage of it my first three years, perhaps partly because many opportunities I wasn't interested in, though mostly it was availability conflicts. But finally I'm going out of my way to take advantage of these events. Today I attended an informal talk with Jason Reitman (director of Juno and Thank You For Smoking) which was very interesting. A couple weeks ago, some of the cast and the director from Boondock Saints came to talk and promote their sequel. A month ago I attended the New Hampshire Film Festival, shamefully my first film fest, and it was quite the experience. It makes me wish I took advantage of these things earlier.
And it sort of makes up for my failing miserably at getting involved with student organisations, which all seem to involve either auditions I can't get into or time commitments that I can't commit to. Not to mention, being the quiet person I am, it's much harder to get involved with these things after freshman year since cliques have already formed. *hates clubs because they're cliquey*

I can second the assignation of reading. Although, currently I should be reading Dante's Inferno and the Finnish translation is rather painful to read... But fortunately I'm reading fabulous Le Guin too and that's not painful at all...
I also assign the Middle Ages. I was just wondering today what could I do when I grow up if I studied Art History, Litearature and a subject called Medieval Studies... mmm...

I read Dante's Inferno last year and loved it. I read it in English but I could understand some of the original text. The copy I have has the English translation on the right page and the original text on left page. To be honest I am not fully sure if the original is in Latin or an early form of Italian. I think it is a mix of both but I understood some of it, I take Italian in school so I can kind of read it.
Anyway to make this post on topic. I assign typewriters to the shire. I love writing and I always get distracted on a computer but I solved the problem. I have a typewriter now and not only is the sound relaxing but no distractions. That sounds like a bad commercial.

Or well, it's not bad, but it was translated by a (very famous) poet who wanted to be true to the original poetic form and loved old-fashioned language, so it is at times very confusing. And I think I'd be above avarage both in understanding archaic language and poetry. *sigh* But oh well, I will finish it and it is still enjoyable at times.

My copy was translated in the 1940's so it reads very differently from a modern translation. It is reads similar to Shakespeare only a little less wordy. I stole my copy, just want to throw that there. A teacher of mine lent me his copy and I have yet to return it. I have a good quote about borrowing books. I will change my signature to it later today.
Uhh to keep on topic I assign rain to the shire. I LOVE the rain.

Despite being a non-catholic and pretty much agnostic I am devoted to St Anthony and he has come up trumps again this morning by returning to me against all hope a precious earring as well as a few other long mislaid items which I was happy to see again. It doesn't help that I am fantastically untidy but I hadn't much hope of seeing the earring (some monetary but great sentimental value) again since I lost it on a day when I had ripped out an old carpet and it could quite easily have disappeared down a crack in the floorboards. Also it showed up without me having to sift through a hoover bag of nasties.

An amazing find at a pawnshop. My jeweler mom found a heart-shaped diamond, around 0.35 carats or more but set in fourteen-carat gold, for just twelve thousand pesos. That isn't a lot of money for a diamond as good as that... but sometimes pawnshops put too much value on the gold but not at the stones.

Not really more the opposite.... a lot of rain in a day after a lot of rain over a long time...I think it was a blocked drain since it was on a main road which is usually clear. Of course all the dead leaves have been blown from the trees and are clogging drains which doesn't help. But we are a lot better off than the poor souls in Cumbria.

Ah, okay. I thought so because I had only a very vague idea of some floods around GB, given my general ignorance streaming from somewhat limited value of information sources I've had access to lately, and did not know on how large scale it happens and thus if it also was your case.

It's not stopped snowing here for over three days now. We have to go shovel every few hours or risk being isolated from the road system. Alaska has no real road maintenance program, so if you do manage to make it to the roads, there's no guarantee you'll stay on them for long. We've gotten over 86 inches of snow in some places. Steve, it's constantly below freezing in New York as well. So the freezing point really isn't a good measure of Alaska.
I mean, tomorrow's high here is supposed to be -6 C, with snow. Today's high was around -7 C. And while it's cold, I don't consider it really cold until it hits -26 C.
I'm totally with them: if it had been above freezing, I'd have been wearing a light jacket.

I finally got The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrún this Christmas! Yay! Though it costs over a thousand pesos, I used all my savings, plus five hundred from my brother, because I just couldn't let it pass. And I couldn't wait for the softcover edition, which was what I did with Children of Húrin.
Also, I found a copy of Ibsen's major plays and The Little Book of Matisse in a second-hand bookshop, for just less than fifty each! :D

There's incredible lots of it here, on the roadsides you can find piles taller than me and all the tree branches are white all over. It's so beautiful!
And besides, they say you can go walk on the sea now, the ice is solid enough. Gotta try that as soon as I finish my first BD check in two weeks!

I love me my triage.
As I was saying to Nienna last night - it was either her or Boro... then again, maybe it was my brother or cousin? - if you aren't bleeding, none of your bones are broken, you're not running a dangerous fever, you can breathe, you're not in labor, and none of your organs are failing, then you can suck it up and wait a few hours.

Theoretically speaking, yes. For me, no. I am moving to the Lower 48 (or the UK!) as soon as I can. But really it's the darkness that hurts you the most, it gets inside your soul and eats you. Not fun.

Just wait and see. I'm about to reassign snow from the Shire to Orthanc - yes, it's beautiful, but having to shovel all the time gets rather tedious after a while, and taking two hours (instead of 45 minutes) to get home from work because our authorities are running out of salt for the motorways definitely sucks. All that's missing now is wolves crossing the frozen Brandywine...

Wait - your authorities actually put down salt for you? Do they plow, too? My goodness...
And yes. Snow goes to Orthanc at least. But what should be assigned to the Shire is the wonderful warm spell in Alaska right now - hovering around freezing point. No need for coats, snow is melting, "spring" is almost here...what more could you want?

Usually, they do both, at least for the motorways and other major roads, but they're having a hard time keeping it up at the moment, as it's getting increasingly hard to get any salt for love or money.

My dear, only the Big City (which admittedly has less than 300,000 people) gets plowed, and even that not fully. Most of us use snow machines or snowshoe or something when it really starts to snow. Most of the backroads are hand-shoveled out only far enough that the shovel-people can get to the highway. Mostly it all shuts down. I think there are supposed to be people to plow, but that never happens. Oh, and highway snow gets beaten down by traffic until you can't see the snow, only black ice (fine, you can't see black ice either). So...Alaskans expect driving-related delays. :p

Only us folk that reside in said large city are safe from snow on the roads. . . Sometimes. Most other times there is packed down snow in the roads. The summer is not much better, what with the pot-holes and such. But for everything else, snow machines are the way to go.

Driving is actually better in the winter because the snow fills up the potholes, leaving an acutal road. Very handy. And four-wheelers in the summer. Or dog sled...I know people who do that. Or horse back, but those aren't as helpful once they start freezing to death. They're funny that way.

Yeah, not many people that I know keep horses because it's freezing for most of the year. I do like the winter because of the lack of pot holes. It is quite nice, except for the slickness. Just today, we slid down the driveway because of the packed down snow. We don't have a four wheeler, last time we went out places we went in our Expedition. That was a bad idea. We got sand in our car.

I assign the support that BDers give to their fellow BDers and their willingness to help out toward an important cause. It is truly a sign of how close a community we really are when so many BDers are ready to back each other up and even sacrifice as a way to show their support. I appreciate what my fellow BDers have done for me this past month and am so proud to be among a group of such wonderful people. :)
I also assign giving something up that so many are unwilling to let go of in the name of a great cause. The experience and outcome are so rewarding that it is totally worth the sacrifice.

What can I do about my misery?
I am a sick man. ... I am a spiteful man. I am an unattractive man. I believe my liver is diseased. However, I know nothing at all about my disease, and do not know for certain what ails me. I don't consult a doctor for it, and never have, though I have a respect for medicine and doctors. Besides, I am extremely superstitious, sufficiently so to respect medicine, anyway (I am well-educated enough not to be superstitious, but I am superstitious). No, I refuse to consult a doctor from spite. That you probably will not understand. Well, I understand it, though. Of course, I can't explain who it is precisely that I am mortifying in this case by my spite: I am perfectly well aware that I cannot "pay out" the doctors by not consulting them; I know better than anyone that by all this I am only injuring myself and no one else. But still, if I don't consult a doctor it is from spite.
And four people earnestly advised him to seek medical help.

It sounds to me that while you have not been diagnosed, you may have some sort of psychological or mood imbalance. It is nothing to be ashamed of and it is extremely treatable!!!
The first step to recovery is admitting that you have a problem, and you just did!!! :)
congratulations!!! :D
Having paranoid thoughts, being spiteful, having conflicting ideas/hypocrisy, low self esteem/feelings of worthlessness, negative/neurotic thoughts without purpose, self destruction.
From your writing, I get the impression that you can be quite impulsive at times.
While I am not a doctor, I know quite a lot about mental instabilities.
And I know first hand, that it can be extremely tortuous for you and everyone close to you to live with. (so by not taking care of yourself, you are in fact injuring them as well)
I really advise you to put your spitefulness aside and seek medical attention!
It will change your life for the better! Happiness is possible!!
You deserve it! No one should have to be miserable!
You need to take this leap and get better! If you feel too guilty about doing it for yourself, think of your loved ones!!
I wish you the best of luck!

the adaptability of nature - I had to stop for a group of deer crossing the lane as I left work and apart from the joy of this sight of the relatively elusive creatures I was amazed how they slid through the horizontal strands of barbed wire to get in to the field (no doubt en route to the open forest 2 paddocks on). It might sound strange, sending thunderstorms to the Shire of all places, but I have to send the one that just ended. It's the first one I've experienced since moving into my new loft, and I have to admit that looking out the window while lying on the bed and watching lightning flash right above you is extremely exhilarating. I'm also sending the fresh air that's outside right now - no dust, finally, which means I can actually keep the window open without sneezing my head off - as well as the fresh smell of wet grass. Ahh, right now it feels great to be alive:).

I assign the little duckling we helped out of its egg three days ago. It had fallen out of the nest, and Mom decided she was busy sitting on the remaining eggs and couldn't be bothered. We took it inside and put it in a cage with a lightbulb and hot-water bottle for warmth; after taking a night to make up its mind, it decided it was going to live and promptly adopted my wife as its new Mom. Since yesterday it's got a sibling who suffered a similar fate shortly after hatching to keep it company, and they're both happily chirping away now.

Just wait a while, and you may yet see me assign roast duck à la Mithalwen to the Shire...
Generally, our ducks are not so much pets as slug police. As of now, we have four adults and three ducklings hatched a few weeks ago, in addition to the two little ones. Some of those will have to go (surplus drakes first, lest there be gang bang). We'd prefer to find a new home for them, but if there's no buyer, the frying pan is the alternative; same for the chickens (and believe me, home-grown poultry beats anything you can get from the supermarket!).
Not for these two, however (relax, Agan!). Don't know whether they'll stay as tame once they share the garden with the others, but they're bound to be stayers - at least the perky yellow one for whom Mrs Pitch acted as midwife.:)

How could I to the dearest theme

That bitter-sweet feeling one has after finishing a great book. On the one hand, you're sad that it is over and wish that it could have lasted longer, on the other hand, you cannot deny the sense of fulfiment after you have read it. I also wish to assign an extremely underrated - to my knowledge at least - writer of historical fiction named Rosemary Sutcliff. There is something in her style and ideas that reminds me of the spirit of Tolkien's books and I think that she would truly deserve a place in the Shire along with more appreciation.

A little glimpse of old times which made me ridiculously and disproportionately happy even after a joyful day (sharing the world's delight at the liberation of 33 latter day sons of Aule from the ground and on a personal level a significant improvement in my father' health )

It may be temporary in fact it probably is since there is no cure for his underlying condition - or anno domini - but every good day is a bonus - and at the beginning of the week I thought we had lost him in mind if not body. So it looks like I get the old buzzard back for a bit and that it was mainly ill not old this time. :D

Galadriel that is very wise. Every winter we had at least two or three heavy snowfalls (by that I mean over 30 cm), and a thinner layer every couple weeks. This winter, though, this is the second (!) and deepest (!!!) - about 10cm, I'd say - snowfall we've had. It's really sad. This is Mordor weather.
And the Shire does get snow - not a lot of it like Caardhras blizzards, but light gentle snowfalls like we've had this morning.
