First of all... to the mods... if this thread is not allowed, then please feel free to delete it. I was uncertain as to whether it was or not.

Ok, I was wondering if any of my fellow Downs members use MySpace. Anyone? I'm always trying to see if there is anyone else I know on there.
Anyway, if you use MySpace, you can find me here: http://www.myspace.com/ladyofshalott

Fea uses MySpace.

I sort of do. I don't have a page on MySpace- I just signed up so I could make comments on Fea's entries.

Oh yeeeaah... are you sure you two aren't dating? Hehe.
You should flesh out your profile and send me a friend's request.

I hope that Fea sees this, because I don't really know how to look her up, she'll have to find me.

Is that a blog site? If so, we could add other similar sites which have Barrow-Downers participating. There are quite a few of us (not all forum members, some from the Downs' chat room) on Xanga - see the Barrow Downs Blogring (http://www.xanga.com/groups/group.aspx?id=77369) there.

Lalwendë

That looks good - I used to do some blogging myself and I've been thinking about doing more. I presume you have to sign up for a Xanga blog, but do you then just link to the blogring? And one more question, can you post photos on there at all? ;)

TP beat me to my own revelation... Yes, I use Myspace. Mostly I forget I have it until I get a message through my e-mail saying that unseen (tp) commented on one of my blogs... usually the comments consist of "Hey, you haven't updated in over a month! What's wrong with you?" ;)

Tig, I'll check out yours as soon as I'm on a computer with a little more oomph. I'm called My<3WasAnOpenBook at the moment, so when you get a request from me, it's me.

I hope that Fea sees this, because I don't really know how to look her up, she'll have to find me.
You would need either to click a link to me, know my name, or know my yahoo address. I'll find you... it'll be easier.

Just trying to help you out, m'dear. ;)

Oh, of course we are. We live a thousand miles away and we've never met. Yes yes- the perfect set up for a relationship. She does her thing and I do mine, and once a day we hop on The Downs and compliment each other on how smart and pretty we are. It's a great system. We've never been happier.

And I added you as a friend, Tig. I hope that's not too presumptuous.

Hahaha. A long distance relationship with him, when I can't even make short-distance ones with people I know in RL work? Riiight. :p

Tig, I've also sent you a request. And just for you, tp, I'm about to update my blog.

Estelyn Telcontar

Lal, once you've registered on Xanga, you go to the BD blogring page to which I linked. On the left is a link that says "Join this blogring" - that'll do the trick! Hey, if I can manage it, anyone can! Anyway, it would be great to have you blogging there - the more the merrier! (Especially if it's more people that I actually know, more or less... )

I'm sure you can do photos; however, it's something I haven't yet figured out. As King Herod said to the wise men, when you have found out, come back and tell me! ;)

Hmm...now, if I am interpreting that correctly, you seem to be saying that-
1) you are not very good with people
2) I am a particularly difficult person to get along with

You are insulting yourself and me at the same time. You aren't still angry about all those insults I threw at you in the last game of werewolf, are you?

I hope you realize I was merely playing my part *coughnotreallycough* :p
I'm about to update my blog
Yipee!

I should post a thing or two on MySpace this weekend. Maybe it can be a place for me to post outrageous and insulting opinion pieces and tasteless jokes. I don't want to clutter up my official site with that stuff, you see.

Tigerlily Gamgee
07-02-2005, 10:24 PM
How can we check it out, Gil-Galad, if you don't link us to it???

And I added you as a friend, Tig. I hope that's not too presumptuous.
Well, it was a bit, but it's not like I wouldn't expect that from you ;) Hehe.

I'll have to check out the Xanga thing... I don't know, though, I already have two online journals... MySpace and Livejournal... so I don't know if I can have another. I don't know if I could keep up with another. Between my two journals, emails, and the forums I visit, I'm already online for too much time. Haha.

O ho! I went and got one too. It's a lot more fun than I would have guessed it to be. Though I'll have to borrow my aunt's digital camera again...

Do you think that, if we started a group on Myspace, then off-topic discussion would decrease here on the Downs? :D

Gurthang

I feel so left out! :(

Although, it guess it's more my own choice to not get involved. I plead the case of not having enough time. Also, I suffer from lack of wanting to type about myself for other people to pry into... not that anyone wants to do that. :p

Still, I'm wondering if anyone here has ever heard of Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/login.php)? It's not nearly as popular as MySpace or LiveJournal, but (from my perspective) it's a whole lot easier to use. Unfortunately, I think it's mainly for college students; but they recently added a high school version, too.

Really? I'm pretty sure that poking is one of the weirdest features of the entire program. Almost to the point of creepy.

Well, it's nice to know I actually have something in common with some people. I'm at Kansas State University, see if you guys can find me. (Right, amongst 20,000 students and you have no name to go with. Good luck! :D ) Fea or arcticstorm, wanna tell me your school so I can look aimlessly around for you. ;)

Really? I'm pretty sure that poking is one of the weirdest features of the entire program. Almost ot the point of creepy.
Perhaps, then, it's the randomly located sentences such as "I don't even know what a pheasant looks like."?

Gurthang
01-14-2006, 02:26 PM
Actually, it was "I don't even know what a quail looks like." :p I started a group about it. :D They recently changed it to say "Too close for missiles, I'm switching to guns." I started a group about that one, too.

I wonder if we can start a group for the Barrowdowns. I don't know if the program will let people from different colleges be in the same group though.

Feanor of the Peredhil

Ooh! I have a myspace right here! (http://www.myspace.com/happyendings18)

I know I'm not particularly loquacious on the Downs, (more of a reader than a participater) but it'd be fantastic to start a myspace group for it!

So yeah, if anyone wants to add me, that'd be pretty sweet! :D

Ithaeliel
05-17-2006, 12:34 PM
I HAD a myspace. But I found that many of the people in that community were questionable in character and had a lot of content on their profiles I found inappropriate, and I didn't want to be stalked via the information I provided (and there have been cases of myspace stalking). So my account has been voluntarily cast into the oblivion for good. I didn't find it to be worth the effort of keeping it up, either.

However, I exist here, and isn't that what matters? :)

Ok, I pretty much went and added everyone on MySpace. I am not being creepy, I promise. I'm trapped at home after graduation, hysterically looking for a job, and spend all of my free time on the Internet, 'cause gas is so bloody expensive at the moment.

I also have a Russian language LiveJournal that I update every once in a while, mostly when I feel like practicing my Russian writing skills.

And Lush, every time I see Russian, I wish I could speak it. Or at least read it.

I have a MySpace, but I don't ever use it. If you look at my friends, they're all bands or musical artists. All... three of them (not counting the ubiquitos Tom.) However, I may someday use the MySpace to promote my writing, so you can add me on the off chance that I will actually be putting something interesting up there sometime soon. Ish.

Diamond18
05-22-2006, 08:45 PM
Well, I think I'd know who littlelushie is. :D I added you. And Jay, and Eomer, and Fea... going to add Tiggers and tp now. There is nothing to see on my profile but I'm sure if I'm bored enough I'll attempt to do something. It will all be lies, of course.

Any of the skeevy people who might hang around myspace looking for young females to stalk and terrorize will wish they'd never been born should they show up on my doorstep, so I'm not really worried. But it's so much more fun to lie.

Valesse
06-03-2006, 01:26 PM
(I tend to keep the same name everywhere- makes it easier for stalkers.)
I'm exactly the same way.

Xanga: Valesse (http://www.xanga.com/Valesse), MySpace: Valesse (http://www.myspace.com/valesse), LiveJournal: (I haven't used it in half a year, but its still) Valesse (http://valesse.livejournal.com/), and DeadJournal: (yes yes, Barrowdowns, haha.) Valesse (http://valesse.deadjournal.com/)

I did make a barrowdowns blog-ring on MySpace, so feel free to join that. There are a few people who aren't from this here fine forum that have rubbed their elbows all over it, but its still good! Has anyone created a community in MySpace that we could join? I'm not sure how one does that exactly, so even though I would have taken the liberty to, I, alas, was not worthy. :(

(N.B., stalkers: Out of all of them I'm the best about keeping up the ol' xanga. :p )

My friend more or less forced me to get a liverjournal so I could read her private posts. I'll be blogging infrequently. Search for TGWBS.

Also, if you're a Downer but your name's not too Downy, could you PM me telling me who you are first, please? Danke.

Brinniel

I've heard of myspace for several months now, but I've never so much have bothered to even visit the site. During my days of high school, it seemed like almost every single person in the school had an account and used it to gossip about each other. I guess the reason I've never joined is because there's too many people I know in real life on myspace and I fear that by joining, I'll have revisit my high school life (which really sucks).

Anyways, I'm a big fan of xanga (it's safer than myspace and more suitable for writers) and lately have been blogging there almost everyday. Unfortunately, I'm not able to be part of the Barrow-downs blogring because it seems you have to apply to join and the ring leader has been gone for nine months. :( Oh well....

Check me out (http://www.xanga.com/Brinniel) if you dare. :p

Hey all you Facebook fans out there, I've got good news. Facebook has decided to allow 'global' groups. Which means that we can have a Barrowdowns Facebook group. :D

I've already set one up, so if you want to join, just search for "The Barrow-Downs" and request to join. You should probably shoot me a message, too, because I might not let you join if I don't know who you are. (You know, security reasons ;) ) I only have the photo page to go by, so it'd be easier if you'd just send me a memo. Oh, and I'm the "Weird Admin Guy", just so you know.

My mate's just got himself a MySpace whatsit so I might get one too (despite being the world's slackest diarist - the option of adding amusing music to it is too much for me to resist), but I had a look and someone's nicked my user name! Anyway, I go on a local forum here and have another user name there, I entered that and it comes up with two identities for that name - so, you knowledgeable blogging types, can there be two people with the same user name then?

Incidentally, I did have a blog years and years ago which mostly consisted of ranting but I didn't keep it up for long as I stopped getting quite so angry all the time. ;)

Diamond18

From what I understand, there can by duplicate display names, which is different than the user name. For instance my "user name" is sarahlitarose and that's what's in the URL but my display is Sarah Rose so that's what people see most of the time.

I created a Barrow-Downs group on Live Journal here (http://community.livejournal.com/thebarrowdowns/profile). There are links to the BD groups on Xanga and Facebook there too, and if someone will give me a URL for the Myspace group, I'll put a link to that too. I'm Orominuialwen (http://orominuialwen.livejournal.com/) on LJ.

I don't think there is a Barrow Downs group for MySpace. If there is, I haven't been invited. :p

But that's okay, MySpace groups never work anyway.

Valesse said something about it in post # 57 (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/showpost.php?p=472146&postcount=57), but she didn't give a link. I tried searching for it, but I'm unfamiliar with Myspace, so I had no luck finding it.

Well! I actually went back and looked at it (seeing as I made that when I was a wee little newblet on myspace) and apparently that is only a myspace blog-ring (http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.blogringMembers&BlogringID=87437&Mytoken=EFBFFB84-EA4E-43CF-88F516A70E977D9548836161) and not a group. However, being the sneaky little spook that I am, I just went and made a proper group (http://groups.myspace.com/thebarrowdowns) all awesome-Orominuialwen like. ; )

I was bored, so I decided to join the LiveJournal clan yesterday.

So currently I have two blogs: LiveJournal (http://brinniel.livejournal.com/) and Xanga (http://www.xanga.com/Brinniel).

Also, if anyone wants to look me up on Facebook, I'm in the BD group along with the seven other Downers (I think we might be the smallest group on Facebook :p ).

Still no MySpace site, and I still don't plan to set one up anytime soon....

Does Xanga count?

Sure thing, Mithadan.

-----

And just a friendly warning because I'm nice and paranoid and pessimistic like that:

I like everybody. We're all nice people. We're all happy, wonderful, community-oriented, kind, honest people who can trust one another. Peace, love, happiness, hugs.

Reality check: Much though we may like and trust each other, please keep close in mind just how much information you are willing to give out, especially on an open forum. Blogs are nice. My own LJ is a delicious mix of fact and fiction and I doubt anybody can actually tell for certain where to draw the line between my stories and my life because I compose carefully to keep it that way. My Xanga is pretty much where I put sonnets I secretly write when I'm supposed to be doing British Lit homework. Myspace tells even more than an average blog, if you let it. Be most careful with the comments you let get posted; it's harder to control what your friends write about you.

Facebook: not only are you releasing your favorite television shows, your favorite quotes, but you are also frequently releasing your first and last name, your school, your hometown, your course of study, your classes, your living arrangements... You name it, it's not hard to find.

I like Facebook. I lurk there when I'm bored, playing with my status, stalking my friends', and enjoying the mad photographer game. I'm currently, as it were, "not enthused about class today" and moping on a beach. The poke function is frighteningly entertaining.

Groups are an easy way to keep in touch with specific people.

Just PLEASE be careful with giving out your personal information because some people are REALLY WEIRD.

Please return to your regularly scheduled All Barrowdowners are Awesome programming.

What she wants to say is that she wants to prevent you from being visited by a maniac with a knife in his hand.
I guess she's right. You never really know who reads the stuff you post.

I walk past maniacs every day. I'm sure a few more wouldn't hurt. :p

But really, I see where you're coming from. It can be dangerous, and in the last few years problems concerning online predators has only gotten worse. It's good to be careful, and by living in the city, I'm usually really careful anyways.

The only place I leave full blown information (last name, address, etc) is on Facebook. Most of that information can only be seen by friends and all of mine are in high school or college networks. Though, ever since Facebook has been opened to the public, I have been a little worried, but nevertheless I still enjoy the site, just with a little more caution.

Ugh!! Okay, I've given into the MySpace craze. So, if some of you get an invite with a kid in a red shirt looking sad (or emo as we call it over here) that would be little ol' me. :D

Like Brinn, I only post 'full-blown' details on Facebook - but even then, with the exception of my surname and school, they're only visible to my friends. Simple way of keeping that safe: only add people you know. (Or...semi-know - Brinniel...)

It's the same on any forum - but then, if you send a message from a personal email to account to any barrowdowner, chances are they could then have your surname. You do have to be really careful, especially if you're under 18 - Balin's "knife in hand" example, whilst a comical image ("Ah ha! You would be the axe-murderer I ordered? Well, splendid, splendid, do come in and have a cup of tea, then we can get started...") is a good point.

Oh, and not to sound patronising now I've finally crossed the invisible line into 'adulthood' *sheepish grin*

Or "her" hand, if you happen to be giving your personal info to me.

I've had a stalker before, but he didn't find me on the Internet. He found me in the coffee shop he frequented, when I got a summer job there. Lots of "fun" stories there, if anyone is ever interested.

Anyways, this is just to say that I've joined the MySpace BD group. :)

Okay, prepare yourselves....Brinniel has created a myspace account. *gasp*

Yeah, I said I wouldn't do it, but I was starting to get irritated how I couldn't view my friends' accounts without being a member. Livejournal will remain my main site for blogging and I'll just use myspace for other stuff...I guess.

Anyways, if you're interested, check it (http://www.myspace.com/brinniel ). I have a privacy setting, but if you friend me, I'll friend you back. :)

Btw, I want to comment on how awesome the BD Facebook Group (http://emerson.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2204573651) is becoming. Fifteen members, and now we have lots of photos. And now you don't even have to be a student to register on the site. Pretty sweet...

EDIT: Post 1111...haha

What's the best blog-space for story serialization? and why? I don't like Xanga for it because everything is upside down with the latest post ABOVE the previous ones, unlike here. So is there a blog-host that does it better AND is user friendly and not weird somehow?

I'd use LJ Lmp. You can change the date chronology.
