Greetings Downers, new and old, rotten and fresh!

The Mount Zoom joke has grown and grown. From its humble beginnings here (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/showpost.php?p=393534&postcount=549) and here (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/showpost.php?p=407499&postcount=1104). The Fortunately / Unfortunately thread has much to answer for.

So, Nilpaurion Felagund and I have been devising a little game for the mirth Forums. Much alike to the Werewolf games, it’s a sort of RPG, but a little too silly for the RPG forums. By "a little silly" I of course mean "completely insane". ;)

Here is how it will work:

We (me and Nilp) will select some drivers and helpers from volunteers who can take on the personal of a character to drive the 'vehicle'. For example Sauron for Mount Zoom, Denethor for Minas Taxi, Frodo for Bag End and so on.

The race begins from The Lonely Mountain and the finish line is in The Grey Heavens.

As the drivers go along the moderators of the game (for this one, me and Nilp) set different challenges, depending on how you complete them will decide which way you go. Challenges could be things like, "A great chasm has randomly opened up in the earth, decide how to get your vehicles over it." Or "You have to cross the river Anduin, GO!"

The winner is the one who thinks of the funniest way across the obstacles. They can be voted for in this topic here.

If that is okay then good! But if anyone wants to suggest changes, please state them here. This is, of course an experimental game and may well (read: probably will) go very wrong. :D

Oh, excellent game idea!

To clarify, is the concept that there are two players per vehicle (a driver and a passenger)? So, for example, Saruman and Wormtongue would PM to decide how to respond to the challenge, with Saruman having final say, as the "driver"?

Well, I've thought about this and Nilp will correct me if he has a better idea...

A general challenge will be set to all, along the lines of "There is a hole in the ground" or "its raining and the ground is slippery" and each must use their surroundings and wit to get past them. They will all, hopefully. get past them and move on, but on this thread people can vote for the winner based on wit, quick thinking and imagination. Voting* will be by any players (can't vote for selves) and when someone wins Nilp or I will move them on further than the others.

* Like WW, ++ Vehicle.

For the voting, maybe to avoid tricky situations (where a player might cast a throwaway vote to avoid being beaten) the votes should be PM-ed to the moderator. If people want to see the votes, the mod could always post them later.

Hm. Good point. I think we should then replace Théoden with Eowyn on Medel-zoom. Nazgûl #4 can be female, as can the Orc. Anyone got any ideas?

Both can post if they wish. The Driver should be the 'leader', if thats the right word, and the assistant can... well... assist. This way they can have converse and have a much more amusing time... I would hope.

Oooh, I don't know. Not as much as a WW game. It's not THAT serious. I would like to see how long it takes people to get past the first obstacle and go from there. I'd hazard a guess at saying around 4 days for each challenge (considering time differences and all that jazz). No idea of how many challenges there will be. Nilp and I will discuss it. We shall see, is all.

The idea is to figure out a good way of going about the challenges. If you wish, you can plan your course of action via PM and make a more RP style post. Which would be preferable. The example above is a little short, but its just to give an idea. The discussions should be lengthy.

My idea is that when someone wins a challenge, they are allowed to move further than the other players. Basically, they all move forward, but the winner by a bigger margin. For example:

Say http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v604/hukbillgoomba/Zoom.jpg wins. He / she gets to move a full inch. Everyone else moves half an inch in any direction that they chose (North, North East, North-North East, West, South-South West ect), directions to be posted here and then the map is updated.

This may go terrible wrong... and where the heck is Nilp?

That would be ridiculously complicated. I think that everyone will have the same challenge, the task is to use the surroundings that they are in at that time, and depending on the direction they have taken. For example, everyone has to defeat a giant Orc, so someone in Mirkwood would probably try something like dropping a tree on him, and someone in Rohan might get some horses to trample it.

First posts, for now, the challenge will be set when they are all in. The first post should specify which direction the vehicles are taking above all. The post should include an introduction to some sort of back-story as to why your character is taking part. Try and fit in as many jokes as you can! :D

This is how I imagine Minas Mor-go is propelled. The steering wheel is either on top of the gates or in the highest tower. When the wheel is turned, a giant basket of man-flesh dangling from the dungeon ceilings moves either left or right. The orcs, inside the dungeons, are continually rolling the wheels' axles. When the basket of meat moves to the left, the orcs to the right push further forward than the orcs to the left, because the right orcs are further away and want to be closer to the meat. Because the right end of the axle is now pushed forward, Minas Mor-go moves to the left. Speed can be managed either by dangling more baskets of meat or by whipping the orcs. As for brakes, we can just throw the orcs under Minas Mor-go's wheels.

I also assume we have something like a steam engine in there, too, where we can use the orcs as coal to fuel the engine. I suppose we don't have enough water to use the steam engine continually, and we'd use it only in emergencies or when we want to scare the orcs.

Concerning the bets- I'm willing to keep track of any retractions and rebets people might want to make on the race as a whole. I could also keep a side pool on each challenge; however, bets must be in before the first vote is made, and you wouldn't be imediately rewarded for it. Say... the person with the most point at the end of the race gets the side challenge prize.
Each person will wager a certain number of points, and those points are returned according to the odds, which will change periodically, according to which team is favored, etc.
What do you think Hookbill? Nilp?

Which reminds me- Hookbill, how long after each challenge do we wait to vote?

It's occured to me that it's a very wise idea of yours, Hookbill (unless it belongs to Nilp) to have two players to a vehicle, since it means there's less (somewhat) of the Werewolf-common stress of needing to be on EVERY day. After all, we do- occasionally- have a day when we can't be on the 'Downs.

As for the betting system, Roa, you can organise it whichever way you think is best. Make it your own little project, I won't constrain you. :p

Given that you aren't allowed to vote for yourselves, it seems fairly unlikely that you would be able to fix the race. (I'm not accepting lays- that is, bets that a certain team will lose, and I trust that you're actually trying to win.) After all, we can vote for the people we bet on, you can do the same. Unless you bet on yourself, in which case, never mind.

Spawn and I worked, I felt, somewhat hurriedly to get through the challenge. If we'd have known we'd had a full weekend ahead of us, we might have done a whole lot more, spent some more time on things...

Anyway, what's done is done here. We've done well enough, it's not a huge issue. But I would like to request that, in the future, deadlines be somewhat firm. It's really not fair to those who HAVE shoved themselves in under the deadline.

I agree with Formendacil on that account. If anything, you should make them have it done by the end of the set date. If an extension is asked, give it for the day after by the end of the day and that's it. If they don't get it done, then they don't get it done. It really isn't fair for those who did get it done on time.

Agreed. This is still a learning process (for me anyway) and if there are any sequels, I expect them to be much better. This is the first game (of an RPG nature) I've ever managed. :p

Since Menel isn't here and since I will be unavailable due to a medical emergency in the family (I'll be around but won't be able to post much) I have entrusted the keys of Orth-Tank in the hands of Ka.

Please note, the only reason I do this is due to the fact that neither the driver no co-driver are available for Orth-Tank. Also, there is a fair chance I will be travelling early May but Menel should be back by then so no worries.

PS: I didn't mean any offence to Beatles fans. I happen to love them, they're one of my favorite bands. :)

I'm going to set a time line for each challenge now, depending on how hard I think they'll be. So I am in favour of a strictly enforced time limit. However, given that everyone had RL committments, given that some of us have time zone issues in communicating with our team-mates, and also given the increasingly high standard of the posts, might I suggest that we all be given a fair few days at least (four or five?) per challenge. This should allow all teams sufficient time to get through the challenge.

It will delay proceedings, I know, but I'm enjoying it immensely and so have no problem with it being drawn out slightly.

This is still a learning process (for me anyway) and if there are any sequels, I expect them to be much better.I don't think you have anything to worry about, Hookbill. It's goin' great so far! :)

PS - I think that Minas Taxi is done.

I think the next challenge is going to be rather difficult, so expect a rather lengthy time limit. It may help if all the players inform me of what Time zone they are in so I can work with it.
My original idea was that each challenge (including voting time) would take slightly less than a week. We shall see.

The fourth challenge will probably last a week for posting and probably about 3 days for voting.

Ah, yes, Minas Taxi is done and I did note it down before. No idea why I didn't record it. Thanks for pointing it out, Master Saucepan.

Well, I can't speak for the other drivers or assistants, but in the case Minas Tazi, the drivers have been made somewhat apathetic by the long deadline... putting it back only means that we procrastinators have that much longer to leave things.

I've scrapped the idea now. There are so few non-players voting that it’s not worth trying to work out. So, non-players (including mods, I've voted each time so far) are worth 1 point and players are worth 2.

Caran and I have both been rather busy this week, for various (and different) reasons.

Caran is working on the second instalment for Bag-Endless-Fuel, but I am not sure that we will be finished by the end of today.

Having said that we should stick with the deadlines that have been set, I am in no position to request an extension, and would not presume to do so. We'll try our best to finish on time. If we don't, well we'll just have to take the consequences.

Real life issues have kept my writing time constricted, I'm also involved on a RPG and I just seem unable to come up with good witty ideas for the game. The consequence of not finishing by the deadline will probably be that Dwarfy will come and help. You'll still move forward, but not as far as everyone else. For example:

Normal = moves 4 steps
Winner = Moves 8 steps
Failure* = moves 2 steps

That’s what I have in mind. I didn't think anyone would have trouble. It has been a week. Well, hopefully when we get to the summer holiday period, more people will be able to post more often.
