I just filled out that character form...

Introduce your elven chap to the Golden Perch Inn thread. Breakfast is going on and little else. A young elven lady with an interesting and humorous hobbit sherriff is about to ask if anybody knows about a locket that she found in the stables. Enter the inn had have him say or do something. Look back a few posts to see where people are. Dick (my character), Cela (Firefoot's characte), Prim, and Will are in the kitchen. But everyone else, I think, is in the Common Room. You will be entering the common room from the main entrance and there are quite a few guests sitting around and talking.

Looking forward to seeing your post.

WEAPONS: A longsword and an oak longbow.
APPEARANCE: He stands at about six feet tall and is clad in medium weight leather armour over which he wears a dark green shirt and trosers. He also wears a dark green travelling cloak which is faded from all of the dirt upon it.

PERSONALITY/STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES: He looks grim yet underneath all of that dirt and grime he is a kind hearted fellow who only wishes to keep the shire safe from harm. Name:

Limaris Arahad

Age:

22

Race:

Human

Gender:

Male

Weapons:

Longsword and Hunting bow and quiver, padded leather cuirass and braces.

Appearance:

5’ 11’’ of medium build, his face defined by a clear jaw line which ends in a rounded chin. His mouth is small, a full bottom lip and a shallow upper lip, darkened as is his skin by the weather and circled by a rough beard, which is flecked with white hairs below the middle of the bottom lip.

His nose is sharp and straight separating two eyes that appear sunken by the dark lines beneath his grey eyes and high cheekbones, topped with dark eyebrows, curled as they meet the nose; giving him a constant stern look.

His hair is short swept back at the sides and raised at the front, resembling a neatly cut topary tree and giving his face a slightly heart shaped appearance. All that is left to desribe are his ears, small and angled slightly backwards with attached earlobes.

All in all a stern rogueish appearance which often makes people uneasy, however this is broken when he smiles or laughs, for his grey eyes glitter and exude a calm and softened appearance. Beneath his padded armour are a light black cloth tunic and a grey woollen vest, his trousers are a dark green and he wears black leather moccasins on his feet.

Personality/Strengths/Weaknesses:

Being young he has still much skill to gain and consequently is his greatest weakness, though in the year with the Rangers he has been imparted with basic swordplay and has developed his skill as a bowman, whom he learnt from his father when he accompanied him on his journeys to Minas Tirith.

Most noticeably though is his tracking talent, mostly raw and unchanelled there is no doubt in the years to come he will become highly proficient at it. Although young he is not headstrong and does not rush into rash action, though quiet and watchful he does not shy from company or a good drink with other folk and enjoys good conversation. Though he becomes closed when asked about his father.

History:

He is of the House of Arahad, A Gondorian father Simaril who was a prominent blacksmith in a small village in southern Linhir near the mouth of the Anduin; they would make a visit to Minas Tirith to sell his work every four months. He has a Rohirric mother who worked as a tanner at Edoras who moved to Linhir when his father met her on a rare visit to Edoras.

His stern features are from his father and eyes from his mother. Limaris was 9 when his father was killed during the Battle of the Five Armies who had travelled there to be with his brother who was born in Dale. His mother Olwyn looked after him until the age of 17 when he ran from home to travel to Dale to visit the burial ground of his father. Returning 3 years later to his mother a hardened young man he imparted her with what money he had, and staying 8 months until the 18 of Forelithe 1354SR he left for Minas Tirith.

It had been his wish to become a Guard like his Grandfather. However upon arrival he was noticed for his skill in tracking, and a year later was on the borders of the Shire with a company of Rangers who were guarding its borders patrolling the Bounds in the South Farthing until it met the Brandywine.

And may I jump in, or should I wait for some guidance as to what has gone and what is happening before I do?

Folwren

Manwe,

I just PMed you, but this is a more direct question that calls for another answer.

It's adviseable if you went and read a few of the latest posts in the game thread, but I can give you an outline of what is happening at present.

In the Common Room, breakfast is being served and people are sitting around and chatting while they eat. Ninja91 has a character who just came in and sat down by himself at a table, and Slifer has another character who did the same. There are also other random people about, but I don't know where their posters are. Let's see, Tevildo's character, Tollers, is running around somewhere, Anguirel has an interesting chap here, Envinyatar has a man called Jack in the Common Room, too, I think. Anywhere, there are several characters there, as I said...but as I also said, I'm not sure where their posters are. :)

My character, Dick, is in the kitchen, I think, but if you need him, he can come out when you call or enter.

Just go ahead and jump in now. Have your character enter and do whatever you want, so long as it fits properly in the game and with the rules. :)

I've entered and am looking for a tankard of ale. Folwren I noticed that your character Dick was busy. I shall wait for someone to come out of the kitchen? Tollers.

I was wondering if i might hold Toller's or Dick at some point to a conversation? What do you think?

Thanks.

Manwe,

Shortly I shall be extricating Dick from the converstain betwixt the two rangers. Dick will see your characters entrance and come over to answer his call. I should have a post up this evening, providing the RotK movie playing in the next room doesn't distract me.

Folwren, splendid. I however will be departing now, it is 2:43am here..and I do have a 9am lecture tomorrow. So I should have a reply to you either late tomorrow, though probably the same time the day after so I have enough time to write a decent second post.

I apologise in advance if I do not always post here what i intend to do/discuss my own storyline, I have RP'ed before, but never used a discussion thread, it is quite strange!

Oh, and is there a description of Dick somewhere I might read? Thank you.

Folwren
12-07-2006, 08:56 PM
lol! Good grief, yes, go to bed. Reply when ever you get a chance and don't worry yourself.

And don't worry about discussing everything you plan to do here before you post it. Discussion threads are used in real RPGs more often than here because people are constantly interacting with other characters in more significant ways, and on the discussion thread, you can make sure everything is alright with the other writer before you write it.

And, yes, a description of Dick can be found if you go to page one of this discussion thread, find Pio's first post or so and hit the link that says Dick. That'll take you right to it.

Name:

Kuric Spearhead

Age:

77 years old

Race:

Dwarf of Dale

Gender:

Male

Weapons:

Kuric makes a one handed mace his weapon of choice, though he is proficient at many blunt weapons and battle axes. He wields these implements of war with his left hand. He carries with him, as a matter of habit, some rather small and generally ineffective throwing axes. His garb is that of a fine mithril chain mail and is always wearing it, even during his sleep. On his right arm he employs a medium size buckler as a means of defense and occasionally using the spike as an offensive weapon. His left hand is now covered with spiked gloves.

Appearance:

Kuric is tall by Dwarvish standards, standing at a respectful 5'2" and nearly as broad as he is tall. He is barrel chested and his muscles are taut and well honed for combat. Kuric is not attractive even by dwarf standards and has many scars on his face and body and is missing a piece of his right ear. In addition to being unusual due to his height, Kuric also has fiery red hair and beard. Kuric's beard is getting quite long and due to his apathy concerning hygiene, his beard is unkempt, wiry and scraggily. His nose is crooked and large due to many breaks along with a noticeably unsymmetrical face. He has a large pronounced forehead with deep set eyes usually covered in their own shadow, if they are seen; however, they appear to be a deep blue hue. There is a depth to those eyes not easily forgotten by those few who have witnessed them.

Personality/Strengths/Weaknesses:

Kuric first and foremost loves adventure and wealth. He is neither a miner nor blacksmith, though he is capable at both as most dwarves are. This passion for adventure has led him over large portions of Middle-earth and is known in many different lands. He is strong, sturdy and hard. Socializing and building friendships have never come easy and he is generally viewed as discourteous, gruff, and rude. While he doesn't make friends easily he is as fine a traveling companion as can be had, unless he is crossed and then he will carry that grudge with him for decades or until the offender is dead. If a friendship is made, he is devoutly loyal and extremely giving, by his standards as he tends to be rather selfish and self-serving otherwise. Kuric has only a small amount of individuals whom he would consider friends; generally they are fellow adventures and have proven to be strong in battle. He is generally distrustful of elves though he has made a friend with one in the past. Of other races he prefers dwarves, for obvious reasons, and men.

He is strong as an ox and with his mace or other blunt weapons he usually inflicts massive amounts of damage to a foe, when they connect. He is a veteran warrior and has a great sense of battle tactics and maneuvers however, he is rather dim-witted otherwise. While his battle tactics are sound if he is sufficiently roused he will go into a rage and looses all sense of thought. He has been known to have others take advantage of him due to his less than optimal mental prowess.

A strange quirk of Kuric’s is that he utterly refuses to ever wear a traveling cloak. He will wear a pack but otherwise refuses to cover his mail, which he displays proudly.

History:

Kuric is originally one of Dain Ironfoot's people and has taken up residence in Dale, if his existence could be considered as taking up residence. His true home is on the road of adventure.

He derives his last name not from birth but from a certain battle. He had been disarmed and backed into a wall by a troll and without much hope of victory he propelled himself off the wall directly in the stomach of the troll, hoping to knock the troll down and simply get away. The force was so great that it caused sufficient internal damage so as to kill the troll.

Notably, he is a relation to Dain Ironfoot, though he is far enough removed that his claim to any future leadership is too distant to be probable.

Ok so I'm a little confused as to this whole format that seems to be operating here. I have roleplayed before, indeed I used to be a moderator on a site just for Tolkien roleplay. However I have never seen it set out in a format like this before and I'm finding it a little bewildering. Shall I just post a character up here and then post in the inn and see where it goes from there?

Grok, I'm fairly new to the RP world here but yes you make up a character using the general form found at the beginning of this thread and then introduce him/her at the inn. There are cetain character types that wouldn't be allowed in this setting such as orcs, southrons, etc...

I hope this is moderately helpful. Welcome to the downs.

Mormegil, Folwren,

I have no idea what Tollers whispered in Dick's ear: the truth, a fabricated tale, or something in-between. Folwren -- feel free to play this any way you like (or to leave it alone). Mormegil -- don't know if your dwarf will accept such an offer. But if you do, I'd love to play one of those children! But then you are also totally free to back out or to try and ferret the truth out of your wily hobbit waiter....

Teehee. Hilarious, Tevildo. I don't know when I'll write my next post (Manwe's turn is next, as Dick's talking with his character), but when he does write, I'll hopefully get a reply up pretty quick for Dick. I think what Tollers would say is that he's going to be giving the new dwarf a room. Should he tell him which one? If he does, Dick will remember who's in the next room, likely, and next chance he has he'll 'remind' Tollers....do you want that?

What splendid goings on! A question to you Folwren, have you had Dick recognise Limaris as a Ranger? If so then fine (I was hoping he might), it means I have partly failed my intended mission, but do you think you would be able to hide this fact from Limaris.

And if you have not then even better! I've not failed. :D

Well...in my narrating, I have referred to him a couple times as a ranger. However, I can change that easily enough and make it so that Dick doesn't know. He doesn't have to know. What do you prefer?

I can also make it so that Dick doesn't say anything about it, so that it won't be obvious that he knows. :)

Greetings from the Grim Shores of Real Life. I been away from the Downs for a long time, and continue to be busy, but I think I have a character who could drop into the Perch from time to time.

NAME: Periwinkle Greenhand of Tuckborough

AGE: 34

RACE: Hobbit

GENDER: Female

WEAPONS: Unused to weapons other than stones, but when angered has been known to wield various at-hand items such as skillets, rakes, or parasols with great accuracy.

APPEARANCE: Young, plump and pretty: Wavy chestnut brown hair with lighter highlights from the sun, fair-skinned with rosy cheeks, lively blue eyes. She usually wears sensible skirts in grays, tans or browns, with colorful bodices and white blouses. For festive occasions, she favors colorful dresses. Peri loves to play with her hair and seldom wears it the same way two days in a row, holding it in place with a seemingly inexhaustible supply of hair ribbons.

PERSONALITY/STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES: Generally cheerful, Periwinkle does have her mother’s quick temper, which she tries hard to keep under control. She has also inherited a Tookish sense of adventure from her mother's family, which makes the prospect of settling down unappealing at this time. While unable to play an instrument or sing on key, she adores dancing, drinking and a good story (to her parents' despair). She’s reasonably well organized, literate and willing to work hard, provided she gets breaks for the six meals all hobbits require in a day. Her independent nature can irritate others and get her into trouble. While somewhat spoiled she is almost never deliberately unkind or rude. (But if she loses her temper, watch out!) Also, Periwinkle did have chores on the farm, so she learned some useful skills. Her strong points are gardening and bookkeeping (and like all hobbits, she’s an excellent cook). She’s fond of animals and can usually coax them to do what she wants.

HISTORY: Daughter of Saradoc Greenhand and Agatha Took, who is second cousin to the fabulous daughters of the Old Took. Her father is a prosperous farmer near Tuckborough, usually under the thumb of her domineering mother. Peri loves both her parents, as well as her two younger sisters, Bluebelle and Hyacinth. Peri has arrived unexpectedly in Stock, supposedly on her way to visit her oldest friend, who married last year, but in fact trying to escape the marital machinations of her mother. Because of her position as one of her father’s heirs, her Took connections, and a comfortable sum of money she inherited from her Greenhand grandfather, Peri has a privileged background compared to most hobbits, and has enjoyed a stream of suitors since her tweens. However, much as she enjoys the attention, Peri would rather find a small cottage and settle down to be her own mistress.

Hello, everyone, new and returning. I am glad to see you.

Folwren, Mormegil -- I was also wondering if we wanted to do anything with those pesky hobbit children? I'd be glad to take on one as well if we decide to develop that part of the story further.

If we do decide to go ahead, would we want to "save" their appearance till the evening. (I know days in the Inn can take a while to play.) Should they pop up in the afternoon or perhaps, with the other things going on now, they don't fit as well in the storyline and we should let them slip to the side?

Let me know what you think as well as any other posters out there who are interested in this.

mormegil
01-08-2007, 08:50 AM
Well as I intimated in my last post Kuric is getting tired. I was thinking of having him start falling asleep on you ;). That would give me a reason to have him head to his room soon.

Mänwe
01-08-2007, 08:55 AM
Tevildo, I look forward to reading the outcome of that little spree, should it go ahead. I had sent an idea past Folwren, which might should it be taken up stretch things..I am not familiar with how the timeline is run when a storyline is being followed. But I'll post the idea here too, anyone is very welcome to join.

I thought seeing as the dwarf appears to be a heavy drinker (morm :D ), and someone with a few tales to tell, and my character not yet a completely rigid Ranger and stickler for rules, would challenge him and anyone who would like to take part to a story, song or poem contest, perhaps an introduction between us, could be be sufficiently loud as to "attract" the attention of the other parishioners, so giving them the opportunity to dip in also.

I thought perhaps it might allow the creative juices to flow and to encourage sprawling posts of excellence.

Though of course I will wait till you have finished your interaction with Kuric.

What does everyone think?

Folwren
01-08-2007, 09:01 AM
Sounds good, Dunwen. Looks like this day will be played out pretty much to it's full... I sincerely hope you aren't kept waiting too long.

Tevildo, let's bring the hobbits children into the story later on in the day. I should definitely like to do something with them. Perhaps they will be able to show Kuric that hobbits aren't so boring after all - without the help of the famous Mister Bilbo. (We should perhaps plan somethng by PM and really surprise Mormegil. :D)

Manwe, I sure hope people like your idea...I want to see it happen.

Mänwe, Folwren,

That contest sounds like a great idea. I'm not sure what Tollers would come up with (but then you never know....) but at the least he'd be an appreciative listener.

Slotting the children into the evening sounds fine. As time moves on, I'd certainly be up for some behind the scenes planning so that the children could pull a trick or two on Kuric/Mormegil. :p Perhaps as we get later in the day we could even recruit another poster or two to play the children? A few line bio might be helpful at that point?

For now though, on to the contest. Kuric probably wouldn't have to do more with Tollers than to wind down the conversation.

Mänwe
01-08-2007, 09:42 AM
Tevildo, splendid. I'll 'finish up' with Dick if I may. And the idea of the contest was to reveal more about my character than I should, helped by the drink. :D So requiring me to beat a hasty retreat from the Inn.

I would love to play as one of the Hobbit children during the evening, if I may?

NAME: Severian (Sev) Baelin Kayde the Third; Son of Severius and Cithwin Kayde

AGE: 29

RACE: Race of Man; Gondorian, Osgiliath

GENDER: Male

WEAPONS: “Sorrow” or Vor’gul is a family heirloom; a basic silver bastard sword (hand-and-a-half blade) that is lightweight and beautiful, crafted by the elves of Mirkwood it is still highly practical. Accompanying “Sorrow” is a simple black-lacquered steel round shield bearing the White Tree of Gondor upon its surface, strapped to his back. He also carries a skinning knife, weak oaken bow, and a small quiver of arrows.

APPEARANCE: Standing at 5’ 11” Severian is an average sized Gondorian male. He sports a lean but muscular build, thick, medium length, straight, brown hair. His eyes are green and haggard from lack of sleep due to long nights of weapons training. His chest and neck contain scars from all manner of creature from previous failed attempts at hunting. His green eyes are set in a firm and rugged face, riddled with small sunburn marks and a well-kept goatee.

PERSONALITY/STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES: Severian is your average male human. Prone to greed, lust, and want for power, yet behind all this lay the strengths of man, such as courage, bravery in hopeless situations, and the want to and ability to learn skills at an unreal rate. Severian tends to be hot-headed and to be slow to trust. He finds strength in being solitary, and distrusts all the other people, save fellow Gondorians and at times those hailing from Rohan. Severian can be highly persuasive when he wants to be and enjoys architecture, poetry, and writing, aside from battle of course.

HISTORY: Born and raised in the realm of Gondor at the city of Osgiliath Severian and his family have known strife all their lives. His father, a Captain of the Osgiliathan defense was killed when Severian was eighteen by the plague that struck the city in its early days. Since Severian has dedicated himself to his realm and the blade, spending most of his waking moments training until he was twenty-three. At that age Severian moved to Minas Tirith in hopes of becoming a Tower Guard for the White Citadel. Unfortunately, Severian was turned down, and with a heart full of sorrow he departed from the White City and his realm in search of adventure. Since then he has been traveling Middle-Earth in hopes of finding himself, and one day returning to bring his nation to the rightful power it deserves. For blood, for honor, for Gondor.

Cheers Mith! Back to you. :)

Folwren, you have another person in the queue to talk to Dick.

Kath I will post tomorrow pm but I think I need you to change the end of your post.

Having seen the old wolf killed he wouldn't be eager to bring the cubs back to the inn openly. Also he went straight out an may be ready for breakfast too ;) even if it is just a chance to get some food to take back to the cubs. If you prefer I will PM an edit for you to insert in your post.

So my Cir does not want to talk to Dick.....at the moment...

I will post for the twins tomorrow now but there is something puzzling me, I don't suppose it really matters but as far as I am concerned my char went straight out from his room and has only just arrived in the common room with his twin. But reading back I see that he is referred to as being already in the common room on his own! I know I was away for a while but I would appreciate him not being moved about by anyone other than Kath. At least without mentioning it to me. Thanks.

It wasn't really your fault Folwren ... Kath's Cir told mine to go to breakfast having seen the wolves from their window but he didn't actually go. however with so many bods to monitor I can understand how it happened.

I will leave the decision about editing up to you and if you think anyone would notice. I spoke more for future reference.. and even if you edit, Forest Elf's would still be there.

NAME: Jadelen

AGE: 45

RACE: Elf

GENDER: Female

WEAPONS: A beautiful bow and quiver of arrows given to Jadelen by her grandmother. It is very special to Jadelen, even though she never has used as she never has had reason to.

APPEARANCE: Jadelen is slim and tall, but slightly short for her kind, this fault in her appearance really does bother Jadelen. This height insecurity causes her to be standoffish at times. She has beautiful, piercing, grey eyes and particularly long golden hair which she always wears down, even though it gets in her way most of the time. Her favourite colour is purple, especially deep purple. She mainly wears long flowing dresses. Jadelen always has in her possession her favourite deep purple cloak with her initials threaded at the bottom of her cloak in golden thread.

PERSONALITY/STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES: Jadelen tries to come across as really graceful and feminine, as her mother puts great emphasis on being well mannered and graceful. Although she is the complete opposite, especially when alone or with her close friend Enpauriel, better known as Cir, who isn’t the best influence on her. She is very clumsy and graceful, even though she tries not to be. She loves to get up to lots of mischief and loves adventures. Curiosity always gets the better of her and this often gets her in many sticky situations. Being an only child Jadelen is somewhat spoilt and bossy. She is set in her ways and is unwilling to change her point of views. She can be insecure at times and this makes her come across as rather standoffish and cold even though she really is a caring and kind elf.

HISTORY: Born to Gavithion and Helanore. Jadelen is an only child and grew up in Rivendell. Her closest friend Cir left to Mithlond to visit her aunt Mithalwen. Jadelen, who became extremely bored with the absence of her friend decided to, without her mothers consent, catch up with Cir and her twin brother. She recently received a letter from Cir indicating her whereabouts, The Golden Perch Inn. Thus Jadelen went on a little journey to find her friend, hoping to find her still staying in the Inn.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hope it is alright... I have made sure with Kath that Jadelen being a close friend of Cir is alright. If there are any problems just notify me.

It is something that depends on the closeness of the relationship between the person but it also takes more skill and practice especially to communicate over long distances ... in Incarnates transmission of thought requires strengthening to be effective. Strengthening can be by affinity, by urgency, or by authority.
Affinity may be due to kinship; for this may increase the likeness of hröa to hröa, and so of the concerns and modes of thought of the indwelling fëar, kinship is also normally accompanied by love and sympathy. Affinity may come simply from love and friendship, which is likeness or affinity of fëa to fëa.
Urgency is imparted by great need of the "sender" (as in joy, grief or fear); and if these things are in any degree shared by the "receiver" the thought is the clearer received. Authority may also lend force to the thought of one who has a duty towards another, or of any ruler who has a right to issue commands or to seek the truth for the good of others.
These causes may strengthen the thought to pass the veils and reach a recipient mind. But that mind must remain open, and at the least passive. If, being aware that it is addressed, it then closes, no urgency or affinity will enable the sender's thought to enter.

It also requires openess ...so I tend to think that young elves might be more able to communicate between themselves than with their elders - equivalent of human teenagers grunting at their parents but spending aeons on the phone or IM with friends ;)

Boromir88

Err that quote was from Tolkiens essay ..... but you can pick up a lot even in a short teaching career ...and a term spent as a matron (house mother) in a boarding school looking after 150 kids was quite intensive (the equivalent of 2 children for 19 years  ) I actually quite like teenagers ..as long as I am not stuck in a room with 30 of them at a time
Anyway I look forward to your response and hope Edric doesn't flee from the troublesome pair ... I have a feeling their aunt may attempt to recapture them ere long..... then he may meet a more serious elf.... :p

Yes! The more the merrier! I believe there were eight of them - ages 3 months to 12 years. I get one of the middle ones!

Who all has claimed one? Tevildo, Manwe, Child, and myself? That will probably be enough, but if someone else wants in, we can have another. Here are some proposed ages:
12 Years old
11 Years old
9 Years old
8 Years old
7 Years old
5
3
And 3 Months.

That's tight, especially the 7, 8, and 9 year olds, but I guess that's pretty much what it'll take to have 8 kids in 12 years. Yikes.

Anyhow, it won't take long for me to finish up my character description.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Double posting, I know, but here's the character description.

NAME: Lil (short for Lilac)

AGE: 8

RACE: Hobbit

GENDER: Female

APPEARANCE: Lil is very short and somewhat round. She has bright, starry eyes that are somewhere between the colors of green and brown. Her hair is light brown and is extremely curly - the length of it is difficult to tell. If the curls are pulled out, it would probably reach to the bottom of her shoulder blades, but the curls curl so tightly, that it really comes to the nape of her neck, giving her head a very round, very adorable appearance.
She wears the simple hobbit garb that is usual - a dress whose skirt comes a little below the knee, over a white blouse type shirt, and she runs barefoot, of course.

PERSONALITY: Mostly, she’s bubbly and mischievous. She is the fourth child of eight kids and is apt to go wherever her older siblings lead, regardless or not of whether it is a good thing to do or not. She doesn’t think much on her own yet (think in advance, anyway). She is not at all shy or backwards, instead she’s extremely outgoing, is very easily humored, and seems to get into everything at once - like many of her other siblings, I imagine.

I wonder about the poor mother. Actually, I know a number of wonderful families with 5-7 children, but I haven't ever met someone with 12!

Could I have the eleven year old?

NAME: Tolman....generally known as Tom

AGE: 11

RACE: Hobbit

GENDER: Male

APPEARANCE: A lanky sort of lad, which is unusual for a hobbit. He is relatively lean and tall with a mop of brown curls. He has bright blue eyes and usually goes about with his hands stuck in his pockets to sort through the various treasures that he has acquired during the day. His pants and shirt are stained and a bit too small, since his mum has trouble outfitting so many children at once.

PERSONALITY: He's quieter than most hobbit lads and a bit cowed by his older sibling who always insists on taking the lead. Tom has a bad habit of borrowing things from others without telling them what he's doing. He has no intention of keeping the item and always returns it to its owner. So far, he has managed to get away with this behavior without anyone finding out what he's doing. even his own siblings. How long this streak of luck will last, no one can really say....

Well, there are 8 here, if that comforts you. I know a couple families with 8 kids, but I don't believe I've ever met any with 8 born in 12 years. And I actually know a family that has 12 children. Have you ever read Cheaper by the Dozen? It's a hilarious book by two kids (well, they were adults when they wrote the book) out of a family of 12 children...

Your Tom certainly looks interesting. Should his older sibling be a girl or boy, do you think? Or should we leave that to whoever claims it?

My character's profile....

NAME: Daisy

AGE: 12

RACE: Hobbit

GENDER: Female

APPEARANCE: Daisy is of average height for a young hobbit lass with blue eyes and a mop of brown curls. She has a ready smile and polite manner, which she uses to her advantage when she is dealing with her parents and other adult hobbits.

PERSONALITY: Daisy is generally bright and good hearted, though she can also be a little stubborn. This can be seen in her dealings with her brothers and sisters. As the oldest sibling of the group, Daisy sometimes considers herself to be their "surrogate mother". She doesn't hesitate to tell her brothers and sisters what to do. This sometimes creates friction, especially with her brother Tom who is only a year younger than her. Daisy will go along with her brother's mischief and even instigate a prank or two, but will usually manage to wiggle out at the last moment to keep herself from being punished.

Here's an apology to Mith for my huge procrastination in the Golden Perch post...I promised to do it weeks ago and kept pushing it aside. Anyway onto more recent news...I was hospitilized yesterday (no I wasn't turned into a hospital :p )...chest pains being the big problem and the doc wondering why I did not have a heart attack as my blood pressure was absolutely horrendous. Im sincerely going to try to get a post up tomorrow, as I'll have a whole day of relaxation (hopefully)...although I have been warned that BP medicine often has strange side effects so I really have no idea how I'm going to react to it. OOohh...forgive me if I do this wrong. I've never RPed an Elf before! :)

Name: Alassë

Age: [Since she is an elf, I am unsure how to go about this. She looks about 26 to a human's eyes.]

Gender: Female

Race: Elf

Weapons: Bow and small quiver of arrows. Not the finest of craft, but still beautifully made. Small dagger which she keeps hidden.

Appearance: As ordinarily beautiful as other elves, her dark hair is pulled back away from her face to ensure optimal sight of her surroundings. Her face is beautiful, but her blue-grey eyes are oft squinted in suspicion and curiosity. She wears a dark-coloured cloak about her shoulders, drawn forward to cover up the muddy traveling clothes.

Personality: Untrusting and dramatic, Alassë seems intent on having a grandeur adventure. She doesn't readily admit much, fearing some strange sort of discovery that is as yet, unnamed. Outwardly serious and often sulking in a corner, Alassë secretly wishes someone would oppose and eventually befriend her. A companion on her journey would be more than pleasant, it would fend off the insanity of being alone for extended periods of time.

No, I have not. I think I PMed him a while back, but it seems that he at least opened it...I'll check, but that would have been the last movement of life I'd seen from him recently.

I checked his profile and it just says "Offline", it doesn't say when he was last on.

Well let me know what you hear, Kuric is getting a bit bored ;)

Mormegil,

If Manwe doesn't show, would you possibly be interested in getting Kuric somehow entangled in the children's subplot? It's the one that Tevildo did a post on today and I am planning to answer him with Tolman. Confession....at this point, we actually have no idea what Tolman threw down on the table. :D

We were batting around some possiibilities by pm. Nothing is really decided yet. Haven't even had a chance to get Folwren's input but of course we are going to do that since she also has a child. Anyways, if you'd like to be involved in the planning or writing, just give the word to Tevildo or myself. It would be fun for us to come up with a little slice of life that's just a bit more "plot driven" than recent posts have been....nothing like a full fledged RPG, of course, which would be inappropriate for the Inn, but some kind of scrape the kids could get themselves involved in....

(And if anyone else would like to latch onto this, let us know.)

Yay! Some first interactions with my new character! She's been there all of five minutes, and she's already soaking wet. I love it...what a brilliant idea... :D Nothing like a dripping-wet elf to make matters interesting. Thanks for the...erm...ale-filled welcome!

Child I am very interested, in fact, the original idea was to have the children pester poor master Kuric. Let's wait a day or two for Manwe to respond to Folwren and then if nothing I'll simply tell the ranger that I'm bored with his conversation and going to my room, which will make me involved as I'm right next to the ruffian children.

Hi, Elentari! I definitely remember you.

We played together in Hunt for the Dragon back in the summer of 2003. :D Glad to hear you are thinking of writing again. I know there's a new game under development. I believe this one will be in the Shire. I'll pass the word along and you can keep your eyes open for a discussion thread. Meanwhile you may want to post in the Golden Perch. The rules for the new Inn are a little different. You put up a profile on the discussion thread and it's approved by Folwren who is the Innkeeper. Then you go ahead and post. Just read the beginning of this thread and you'll see how it's slightly changed from the Dragon.

A few of us are working on an Inn subplot for hobbit children who get into some mischief in the Inn. If you have an interest in that, let me know. Or you're welcome to develop another character of your choosing. If Pio or I can be of any help, just drop one of us a note.

Child,

I've popped in once of twice since I stopped posted here in early '06, and I saw the Inn when it was still fairly new. Have read the stuff on the first posts before, but I will definately read them again. I need to get back into the swing of writing properly. Way too much chat speak! My books are just getting left unwritten due to lack inspiration. I'm hoping writing here again will help ^_^ Got to decide what my character's going to be like though, because I never really think it through enough. May use a non-LotR character I have and just push her into Middle Earth, lol. ^_^

Oh, also, what are peoples views on Half-Elves? My character's a half-elf, but I'm not sure how Tolkien had them, whether the elf traits or the human traits are stronger. I was thinking about having my character as a half elf with no elven traits and she doesnt know her father was an elf. Would that work? Just realised I really shouldnt use this character because she's in one of my books, lol. I'll created a new character based on her though, seeing as she wasn't a LotR character anyway. But now I have to come up with a new name.

Hm. Half-elven? I-I...I'm not sure. The first few posts of this thread have all the rules and information and stuff about the Golden Perch. You may want to go back and read that. But this is there among other things:

Types of characters allowed:

Hobbits
Men
Elves
Dwarves

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Character types that are not allowed:

Orcs
Easterlings, Southrons, and any other men of an evil race
Animals (as main characters)
Any other creature or persons not mentioned in 'Types of characters allowed'

I'm inclined to think that half-elven characters should not be allowed. It didn't happen very often in Tolkien's books, and when it did, it was extremely special. As to what happened to the kids, well...there was always some big to do about them. Elrond and his brother, were they not sons of and elf and man? Didn't one get to choose if he were to be immortal and take after elves (Elrond) and the other that he'd be mortal? And I don't know about Beren and Luthien's children...

I would prefer it if you just made her full elf or full man.

Thanks! And welcome here! I look forward to your character and her entrance to the inn. :)

Elentari - your character bio has been posted to the character list for the inn on page 1. ~*~ Pio

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NAME: Lynaata

AGE: 17

RACE: Human

GENDER: Female

WEAPONS: A small dagger she picked up in Bree. The hilt has an intricate design, but all the jewels have been removed by thieves, the dagger discarded as it is of no value.

APPEARANCE: Lyn is tall and slim, perhaps too slim. When she arrived in Stock her hair was unkempt and in need of a thorough wash. Her eyes are dark brown, as is her long hair. She wears a simple green dress, the colour of which has faded with age. On her feet she wears an old, tatty pair of leather boots, quite obviously designed for a man with much larger feet than her own.

PERSONALITY/STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES: Lyn is a very shy and timid person, due to her upbringing (see history). She believes she has no strengths, although during her life in Bree she developed quick reflexes to avoid beatings. Lyn believes nothing she does is good enough, although she does her best to please. Although she cannot write, she is good with words from listening to wealthy men talking in the inn where she used to work.

HISTORY: Lyn never knew her blood parents. The couple who adopted her believed they could not have children of their own, so when a babe, Lyn, was left at the gates of Bree they volunteered to care for the child as their own. However, when Lyn was five years old, her "mother", Tara, fell pregnant. When Tara and Peter's son, Ian, meaning "gift from god", Lyn's life changed dramatically. Her parents no longer cared for her, no longer did they shower her with gifts, for they were not poor, though nor were they rich. Tara decided that once Lyn was eleven she should work to earn her keep.

Lyn found a job as a maid at a little known inn a small distance from Bree. The work at the inn was hard for an eleven year old, but the kind hearted Innkeeper took pity on her. For five years Lyn enjoyed her work as a maid spent more time at the Inn than her home. But good things never last, as Lyn learned long ago, and so it was that the old Innkeeper passed away. His son, who took over the business, was a brutal man, and had never liked Lyn. He claimed Lyn used her looks to win his father's favour. He took it upon himself to beat her for every little mistake, even if there were none he would invent one. Her father, Peter, cared little of this, as he had always beaten her himself when he was drunk or in a fowl mood.

On Lyn's seventeenth birthday, Peter made an offer to the Innkeeper, Ronald. If Ronald took Lyn for his wife, Peter would pay him dearly, saying it would cost him less to bribe a man to wed her than it would for him to keep her in his house. Ronald, a greedy man, accepted. The beatings increased in number and force. Often Lyn would be left senseless in an unused room of the Inn, then to be punished again when Ronald accused her of sleeping on the job. Eventually Lyn decided enough was enough.

Her journey was not an easy one. She had never travelled before, had no sense of how to fend for herself, nor did she know the way. It was by chance that she stumbled upon Stock, mere days before the food she had stolen from Ronald would have run out. Her journey had taken much longer than it would for a healthy woman her age, but her Peter and Ronald had left her crippled. She found it hard to walk at any speed, at her left leg had been fractured more than once, leaving her bone prone to more injuries if she was not careful.

Geez...I leave for a year or two and the whole system gets changed. Well i guess i better start from scratch

NAME: Vehil

AGE: He would look to be 20 if he was a man

RACE: Elf

GENDER: Male

WEAPONS: Elven longbow, two long knives with elvish inscriptions on them. Leather armor.

APPEARANCE: 6'0'' fair-skinned. Just over shoulder-length brown hair. Slightly muscular

PERSONALITY/STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES: Calm and collected, yet with a quick wit. He often struggles with what his heart tells him to do. He can grow very passionate about his past, and is very secretive to most except those who are very close to him. Vehil excels in archery, and fighting with his knives. As agile as most elves. He is very suspicious of people, until they can prove themselves to him. Some consider it a weakness, to Vehil it is only caution.

HISTORY: Vehil hails from the Golden Wood Lothlorien. He and his older brother left the wood and settled in Minais Tirith for some time. Little else is known about him at the time, yet he will likely reveal more about himself to those that earn his friendship.

Hello all,

Thanks for the welcomeChild of the Seventh Age. I would like to introduce two new characters.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Name: Luriniel

Age: she was a young child at the time of the forging/deception of the great rings.

Race: Elf of Mirkwood

Gender: Female

Weapons: A bow and and knife, both of elven make

Appearance: Fair to behold. Dark hair. Graceful in movement. Has grey-blue eyes.

Personality: Cautious. Slow to forgive. She doesn't like unnecessary delays. Rather outspoken, especially for an elf.

History: Luriniel and her sister(the second character I would like to introduce), Nienna, have been wandering M.E. searching for a safe place. They do not feel safe with their other kin because their father long ago betrayed his people and revealed himself to be a servant of Sauron.

Although, the elf-maids do not serve the enemy they were suspected at first and therefore do not believe that they will find welcome with anyone of their race. They were still young by elf standards when they struck out on their own.

They carry with them some gold for emergencies but rarely spend it because they avoid towns as much as possible. During their travels they acquired a horse whom they call Estel, because it came at a time when their hope was failing.

Their reason for coming to the Golden Perch Inn is because Nienna has been injured by an orc arrow. Not wishing to trouble her sister, Nienna kept the wound a secret, attempting to dress it herself. Eventually, the wound became infected. Now Nienna is in a delirious and feverish state. So Luriniel leads her to the refuge of the Inn.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Name: Nienna

Age: About ten years younger than Luriniel

Race: Elf of Mirkwood

Gender: Female

Weapons: A sword called eressëa

Appearance: Less fair than her sister but still fair. Her eyes are grey with flecks of green.

Personality: Slow to trust more ready to forgive. Meek. Quiet. Nienna doesn't like to be a burden to others and rarely lets even her sister know when she is having trouble with something or someone.

History: See that of Luriniel.

Tom has gotten the children into the cellar. We still have to find the point where the old burrow---the remains of the original Golden Perch--attaches to the cellar of the present building. Once we're in the burrow tunnel, I'm sure we can figure out a way to get trapped, have the wall collapse or something.

It's dark enough, they could get easily lost without having a wall cave in.

I'm confused. Did Elfchick's character noticed Newsman's or MaskedNicci's character?

MaskedNicci, did your character go stiff about Elfchick's or Elentari-Greenleafs person?

My post in the Inn may be designed off of incorrect conclusions. If I wrote it wrong, please tell me, and I will change my post.

My character noticed Newman's character but that can be altered if y'all think it fits better for her to notice Alasse(my mac can't do the dot things).

Well, it depends on what MaskedNicci wants. I wrote mine on the supposition that you had noticed Newsman, and that Nicci had noticed Elentari.

MaskedNicci

Sorry for the confusion guys! I meant to come in here and explain it for a quick reference, but things have been crazy around here.

I noticed that ElentariGreenleaf had written so that her elven character Lynaata had noticed Alassë (or so it looked, since Lynaata made note of the fact that the female elf was 'cleaning off her dress'. Please correct if I am wrong.) and since no one had approached her character, I was trying to strike up something there, by having Alassë noticed the staring going on.

So many elves! :p

So to be clear, a little sum-up:
-Alassë was talking to Elorn.
-Lynaata came in and noticed Alassë, sitting down by the window.
-There's a bunch of hobbit-children creating mischief.(heehee...I love that)
-Then Vehil comes in, and sits down and gets himself a drink.
-Kuric ze dwarf noticed his ring missing, and went into a rage.
-Vehil kindly offers to help him look for it, and the innkeeper comes in.
-The hobbit-children have found ze cellar!
-Luriniel enters, asking for medical help with her sister. It says she 'notices an elf', there are several in the room, but from what I can tell, Vehil is the only male elf there, right?
-Kuric begins to storm out of the inn
-Dick turns his attention to Lurinel and her wounded sister.
-Alassë cools until she notices Lynaata watching her, and Elorn goes to help Dick with the elf Lurinel.
-Vehil walks over to Lurinel as well and introduces himself.
-Lurinel brings in her sister.
-Vehil starts helping with Nienna(Lurinel's sister).

Have I got it right, people? This would leave Alassë standing alone for a moment, watching Lynaata stare at her, Vehil mending Nienna while Lurinel, Dick, and Elorn watching(they haven't yet replied). It would also mean Kuric has left, right?

(And it's perfectly fine to just write it Alasse. I just like the little dots :D )

mormegil
05-07-2007, 05:22 PM
Yes Kuric is officialy outside right now. I'm trying to think what I want to happen here. I don't think finding the children in the cellar would be a good idea as that would ruin their adventure. I was thinking of making a quick run around the inn and not seeing anything overly suspicous (Hobbit children don't leave prints plus Kuric is too angry to notice if they did) I will return inside thinking the thieves stayed inside. Of course, that would require me getting upset and accusing some present at the inn, such as Vehil and the newly arrived elves :D

Last time we had the doctor, anyone could give him action. Or, at least those who were involved with him in some way.

Alright, that answers that question. Now for research on healing methods. If I recall there is a link for that on this thread but even so, does anyone have suggestions on how the scenes with the doctor will play out?

I know a few simple home remedies. My sister and I have bandaged and cared for a horse's leg when he nearly cut his foot off... The doctors first step would be to clean what he can of it, and then putting some sort of salve into it that will disinfect it (honey and kayan (sp) pepper would probably do that, or something else, if anyone knows what. Honey really has great healing powers). He'll wrap it and let that do its work. That'll have to sit a while. She'd likely sleep then. In a few hours, the bandage and salve would be removed and changed...

How's that for starters?

Tevildo,

Got your PM and replied to it.

Thanks Folwren! That does help. In the end, I looked at the posts and realized that I had a bit of time before the Doctor will appear.

Actually, Newsman, it might be better if you handle the Doctor as he will probably have more dialog with Vehil regarding the wound than he would with Luriniel or even Nienna. After a history, there isn't much the girls can tell him about the injury. What do you think?

Honestly I'm a bit confused right now about time lines and the continuity of the story. Kuric ran around the property while the new, injured elf was getting cared for and looked at. He burst in again and accused Vehil. The doctor has been summoned in the meantime. Now what I'm confused about is how did another dwarf come in and get some ale in and the elf rush out? All this while Kuric is just standing there? Also, I have been somewhat waiting for Tollers and I fully the wait Tevildo so no worries but it seems like too many things are happening. I'm a neophyte to all of this so I could be wrong but some direction from Folwren of Pio may be of use here.

Alrighty. That's fine, mormegil, I entirely understand. Your character challenged Vehil, Newsman's characters. Vehil said he had nothing to do with it, and then Dick told Kuric to dry up and not cause trouble, because an elven lady was wounded:

“Oh dear,” said Dick, worryingly as he watched the elves group around each other and begin inspecting the wound at once. “Oh dear me, let’s not do it here, for heaven’s sake. Gable, do run and get the doctor, if that’s who you’re talking about, with all your healer’s talk. You dwarf, quit making such a hubbub, can’t you see the lady’s injured? Here, sir,” addressing Vehil, “take her other arm and follow me.”

Then Nienna was run off to another room leaving Kuric stewing in common room. Vehil, his main suspect, was taken away, too, so he's probably pretty upset.

Almost directly afterwards, Fain entered and called for an ale. I suppose Rowan or someone belonging to the inn fetched it for him.

So...I guess Kuric's been sitting there wondering what happened.

However, Dick was sent off to fetch some food, and if you want, you can address him as he crosses the common room. I haven't actually written a post for that.

And Tollers...well, Tevildo is in charge of him, so I'm not sure what's up there.

Does that help? A little, maybe? Just jump in where you can...

Morm - Cela was also just sort of left in the Common Room - since I need to get her back into the kitchen, in the first part of that post I can have her address Kuric - probably something along the lines of "How about you sit down and I'll get you a nice piece of pie" (pie solves everything :D) and probably with a warning not to go causing any more trouble...

Tollers didn't post because his owner was working on a little "twist" for this tale that had to be cleared with Folwren first. After I got Folwren's answer, I was intending to post late tonight, but then I just received another note and inquiry from Morm. Now I've written him and hope we can plan how to put all these pieces together in the "right" order. :p As soon as that order is established, I will definitely have a post up.

Any problems if I go under the assumption that Fain's arrival happened after Kuric leaves the common room? (He's about to leave again). It would make more sense, otherwise Fain is going to walk in on a dwarf standing at the door. If he walks in shortly after Kuric leaves it makes perfect sense why everybody will eye him suspiciously.

All Players

Please note there is an informational post with lots of pertinent links at the beginning of this Discussion Thread:

Post # 2 (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/showpost.php?p=470525&postcount=7).

Time frame for the Inn:

It is the year 2957 of the Third Age (1356 Shire Reckoning/SR by Hobbit reasoning), 16 years after Bilbo went on his adventure. Frodo is not yet born. Strider is wandering about in the wild and he and Gandalf have met and become friends. The rangers are watching the Shire and not letting any evil things enter. Sauron has declared himself openly and has settled in Mordor.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

May 5 (14 Thrimidge), 1356 SR will be the date that the game starts.

Please familiarize yourself with the above linked post. You can also find links there to all of the players' characters, info about the village of Stock, a map of the Eastfarthing, a description of the Inn, etc.

Thanks!

I don't mean to be a bother, but I can't really see Alassë doing much right now until either someone else approaches her, or ElentariGreenleaf replies. Because she is quite occupied with staring at the girl by the window at the moment, and isn't likely to go introduce herself. Would it be possible, ElentariGreenleaf, for you to reply soon? Morm - It's GREAT to see this subplot moving again, but I had one question.

I am wondering if we have a conflict. In post 471 Folwren's character stole the torque (after Tom stole the ring). But in the latest post the dwarf says the necklace is on the nightstand.

Is the torque different than the necklace? That might be the easiest way to handle this if there is a conflict...just having Mormegil say in one sentence that he suddenly notices his "old" torgue is missing even though the necklace is there. Or have I misunderstood these posts (which is highly possible!)?

Here's Folwren's original post. (www.forum.barrowdowns.com/showpost.php?p=519374&postcount=471)

NAME: Hop Deepdelver

AGE: 44

RACE: Hobbit

GENDER: Male

WEAPONS: Sling, Knife (of the type used to prepare game birds and fish), Walking Stick

APPEARANCE: Dark, unwashed hair, generally grubby appearance, wears a battered waistcoat under a hobbit travelling cloak.

PERSONALITY/STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES: A dour Hobbit, disliked by his relations and aquaintances, is sullen when not being a braggart, prone to hyperbole. A skilled poacher and woodsman, though (like all hobbits) terrified of water, generally cowardly, he has an unusual animosity to his own kind and prefers the company of big folk and dwarves (who find him distasteful but tolerate him)

HISTORY: Son of Gorbulas Deepdelver, he was often missing from hobbit gatherings from a young age, instead spending his time as a youngster crawling through briar thickets and climbing trees (a habit of which his parents sincerely disaproved)
He quickly picked up a skill for woodsmanship and spent his adolescence in the woods, climbing trees and hiding in wait for hobbits to pass below, whom he would pelt with acorns or other seeds, as he reached his mature years Hop took to poaching for his livelyhood, rather than a respectable hobbit job. He was very recently forced out of his home villiage after being caught in possession of a brace of game birds belonging to a local hobbit landowner.

Ruby likes to tell stories of things that have happened so she will be talking. Ruby has lovely golden/brown hair just like her sister and has hazel eyes, Ruby is 3 feet tall since she has not yet full grown. She will always bring a mirror to look at herself in, and loves music... Be careful Ruby is very mischievous, she likes to get into the ale and pipeweed although she is too young! Hi there! Just checking in after awhile...

I think Peri needs to find someone to stable her pony -- I'll get a post up ASAP.

Has anyone heard from Newsman in a while? Our characters are sort of stuck in mid conversation.

Newsman hasn't been on in nearly a month. You can PM him. If he doesn't get back to you, then go ahead and finish the conversation in whatever manner you'd like & move your character on.

Thanks, Piosenniel, I guess I needed to read the Red Book more thoroughly but I've done it now, sorry for the trouble.

TheGreatElvenWarrior,

My last post in the Golden Perch thread might have a possible solution to getting your pony unhitched and stabled. I'm not trying to interfere with your story or anything, but I noticed our characters both have ponies that need to be stabled.

Dunwen and Great Elven Warrior,

I apologize for no one getting your ponies. My stableman seems to have disappeared. I'll PM Arry sometime shortly and see if he's still around.

Welcome, all you new comers.

I am back, now, everybody, for good, I think. That is to say, I am not leaving for weeks at a time in the near future. I'll catch up on the game sometime this week. I am, unfortunately, sick right now and so can't do much today, unless things improve. :(
