The IGN.com movie site has voted Peter Jackson's LotR movies #3 (http://movies.ign.com/articles/752/752159p1.html) in its list of top movie franchises of all time. Some of the comments: The most consistently entertaining and well made trilogy in film history...
...the cinematic transcendence of the modern fantasy movie genre.
Enjoy reading!

Funny how they keep touting out reasons for purported cinematic quality while the title of the ranking is Franchises, eh wot? I rather think this is the criterion with greatest weight:
Also factored in were the franchises' commercial and artistic successes, as well as their impact on pop culture and how many ancillary items they spawned (videogames, comics, fast food tie-ins, etc.).
I think it must have been the Burger King Ring Meals which added that extra little nudge, although the Games Workshop miniatures likely helped. I don't think we've yet had a graphic comic version of LotR either or novel serialisations (although I bet somone might be looking at The Silm with avaricious plans), so that probably also held back the LotR trilogy from top billing.

We'll never see novel serialisations or anything like that as the estate would be bringing out the solicitors. Can you imagine them ever allowing Tolkien's text to be diluted and dumbed down like that? But I would not rule out estate-approved graphic novel versions as there has already been a high quality graphic novel of The Hobbit, and adult graphic novels are now of superb quality with all the great artists and writers around. I'd certainly buy a decent one - say one illustrated by Charles Vess.

Imagine if they every made a televition show called "The New Adventures Of Legolas", some cheap spin off, with no real plot and lots of bad actors.
If anyone has ever seen "The New Adventures Of Robin Hood" they will know of what I speak.

well I was sure Star Wars would be first, but I was surprised to see James Bond better then Lotr...then again the James Bond series do have a lot more movies...
Maybe with the Hobbit coming out soon LOTR will manage to take second place
as for Star Wars, the movies are nice, but what the books did the story is terrible...:(
