Lal gave birth to a boy last night - 10.30. Mother & baby are both fine.

(Sorry there's no more details at the moment, but its 2.40 am here & I've just got back from the Hospital. Eleven pounds 3 ounces by caesarian. And now to bed.)

And concerning sleep, some say this provides a slight solution:

Anyone who thinks that women aren't tough hasn't witnessed up-close-and-personal pregnancy, labor and childbirth. From the male point of view; sure, when living with a pregnant woman/'helping' in the delivery, you risk your life with every utterance or act. But what amazes me is that, after carrying the child for 40 weeks or so (the whole idea of something alive inside of me is too much like 'Alien' for comfort), going through the process of labor - in Lalwendë's case, two days! - upon seeing the child it's like the whole ordeal never happened. And they may even, knowing what they know from a first child, go back and do it again!

There is some interesting research that shows that women do forget just how painful it is surprisingly quickly which I suppose is natures way of maintaining the population... but I can't quite believe it, but then I went drinking with a obstetrician at an impressionable age ...and that really put me off :p

Sooner than you think he will be questioning all you wish to teach him. And before you realise he will go to school - that happens so fast!! And after that he will probably join the Downs and lo! what can we do about it but to learn from him then... :)

Congrats!

I'm back.

Well I have a thousand and one things to do and am verrry tired, but my first task shall be to come on here. We came home yesterday evening. Davem said he'd do the through the night thing last night and is now in a sate of severe shock - I'd already done four nights of this in the hospital so I was quite happy to give him a turn but the little tyke decided to give him the run around and not induct him in lightly. Meh. ;)

It's quite funny how quickly you fall into casual talk of sore bums and the colour of poop. Saying "What has it got in it's pocketses?" adds amusement to the task... I'm quite taken with the concept of modern medicine as the hospital team did a great job and despite still walking around at little old lady pace and whining when I climb the stairs as I can feel the stitches pulling, I was up and on my feet within 12 hours of the event. There's nothing to be scared of really, painkillers are excellent these days and then afterwards nature shows you what to do. ;)

Now I need to look up what Middle-earth events took place on his birthday - off the top of me head, I think this was when Frodo was fleeing to Rivendell wasn't it?

Hilde Bracegirdle
10-16-2007, 10:15 AM

Just bear in mind that it is a topic of somewhat limited interest to anyone who a, hasn't got a strong genetic stake in the pooh producer or , b, doesn't have one of their own to swap anecdotes about. I really didn't need as much information as I got about my god-son's potty training believe me :p Don't get me wrong, I like children... Haven't been around much lately - family, work, other interests etc - so I have only just seen this.

Many congratulations to both - all three - of you. I am really happy for you. :) I remember when our first was born - nearly 10 years ago now - and what a wonderful moment it was. As for those who tell you to make the most of every moment, well they've got it just about right. The years just seem to whizz by.

I am impressed that you sound so calm, Lal, after what you have been through. My recollection of the first few weeks is utter panic, although that was largely because Mrs S had some complications (severe back pain from a botched volley of epidurals), and I had to learn the basics of babycare pdq. Still, it sounds like you are coping well, and I'm glad that you have got davem doing his fair share. :D

And bear in mind that things are always much easier second time round. ;)

All the best.

I was told right away that an epidural was the sensible choice as it was going to hurt more than normal otherwise so I took it gladly - I was scared but the brisk and sarcastic manner of the anaesthetist made me laugh and thankfully she did a good job. The other anaesthetist who took over in the evening was similar and let me hang onto her hand and talk mind-diverting drivel to her all through the op. I asked one if she had a thing about needles considering her specialism and the other I accused of being a sadist. ;)

I'm calm because I have to be, but I have had some screaming fits over the inability to get the steriliser into the microwave and thinking I'd given the tyke nappy rash (it was his antibiotics which did this) :(

And davem has taken to it all like a duck to water. ;)

Well you know that whatever happens, something has got to come out in some way, and if there is the option of doing this relatively painlessly then you snatch it up. I kept thinking that if Frodo had been offered a Tardis to take him to the Cracks of Doom then he'd have been mad not to take it ;)

It's all frightening at the time, but afterwards you really do put it out of your mind, possibly as you are soooo tired... :(

I did wonder what agonies poor Miriel went through having Feanor though, to make her react like that? Wonder how heavy he was? ;)

Oh I fully admit I am a wimp ...and too many friends have told me more than you should tell someone who hasn't gone through it... and size isn't everything :p - my godson was a froglike 4 llbs and still did enough damage to necessitate transfusions and emergency surgery. Another friend produced ninepounders with no epi, no stitches and was back in size ten jeans within a couple of weeks. If she weren't my dearest friend I'd have to kill her....

I was told right away that an epidural was the sensible choice as it was going to hurt more than normal otherwise so I took it gladly - I was scared but the brisk and sarcastic manner of the anaesthetist made me laugh and thankfully she did a good job.
I think that the reason we have four is so that my wife could finally experience childbirth with an epidural...
Child 1 - How bad can the pain be?
Child 2 - Preeclampsia complicated labor and birth, and so the anesthesiologist said no, after putting the needle in my wife's back.
Child 3 - We rushed to the hospital - Ms. alatar suggesting I run every light and signal as the baby was about to be born in the car  - so when we get to the hospital, we tell the nurses that the baby is about to be born. Experts that they are, knowing that we were just another couple of clueless parents, figured that we could wait in one of the pre-labor rooms. We also stressed that, being aware of the epidural 'window,' that we were keen on getting one immediately. This was met with a yawn. So after a few minutes in the pre-room, I went out and asked a nurse for some gloves and some scissors. She asked why, and I said, "Well, I don't want to contaminate the baby when I cut the cord (the baby hadn't come yet, but it was close)". Suddenly we were rushed to the birthing room amidst apologies and after a few minutes - Ms. alatar try as she might to 'hold it' - we had child #3, missing yet again the epidural. Note that Ms. alatar gave birth a mere 45 minutes upon me dropping her off at the hospital door, and that's due to her trying to hold out for the epidural.
Child 4 - We got to the hospital a little earlier this time, and, after explaining to the nurses our prior experiences, got an epidural shortly after arriving.

After experiencing four such events, I can't see Tinúviel or Arwen going through the same ordeal.

I always think it is a conundrum, to describe a baby's size before he or she walks: is it really "tall" or would "long" be more appropriate? ;)

He's got a beautiful smile. Isn't it worth all the world and loss of sleep to see that smile? especially when it comes just after an upchuck or the umpteenth nappy change five minutes after the previous one, which drenched the bed too. :)

Impressive name, Davem.

Though I don't know the exact meaning and of course both known bearers were female, I don't think there is a reason why Finduilas couldn't be a boys name - Fin appears in many male elf names , then we have Thranduil and Legolas ... far less odd than David Cameron calling his son "Elwen".

You do have a point. But it's kind of like Leslie being a name for both genders. I think it sounds like a girl name, but obviosly not everyone agrees. The problem is, once anyone read the Silm. it would always be a girl name to them, so it wouldn't work.

He's Alfred Graham Caedmon. Alfred because its Anglo Saxon & means Elf-counsel, Graham for family reasons & Caedmon was the earliest English poet we have a name for & because of his connection with Whitby, one of our (& Tolkien's, apparently) favourite places.

Graham would be Anglo-Saxon too, eh? Grey Hame. Wolf. Or Gandalf. Or both

Cool picture Lal, not to mention T-Shirt slogan :D
