View Full Version : The Flooding of the Bruinen

I began watching the movies again this week, and I believe I may have spotted a bit of detail that Jackson and co. got right when making the movie, but one I had always imagined wrong every time I read the book, and that is the direction the flood waters come from when they flood the ford of Bruinen. I had always pictured the water coming from Frodo's left when I read the books, but in the movie they come from Arwen's and Frodo's right. This should be the correct direction since the Hobbits were travelling from the west heading east towards Rivendell. Therefore, the waters would have been following a north to south direction on Arwen's and Frodo's right as they turned and faced the Nazgul behind them to the west. So this is a case where even after reading the books for 35 times, I never got it right in my head. Had Jackson NOT made the film, I may never have corrected this error, as trivial as it may seem, for all of my life.

It is great that the films did something of service for you and others. I must join you in confusion about right and left and directions when I read LOTR. One time I took out a couple of ME atlases and attempted to track every significant movement that way just so I would have it clear in my head. However, that only proved even more confusing. So now I just go with the flow - regardless of the direction ;).

Of course, there's always movie Legolas's
confusion about the direction of Orthanc
on the path of the Three Walkers. :D
And I did like the way PJ included
Gandalf's horses on the waves, BUT
I STILL WOULD PREFER FRODO'S BOOK QUOTE
"By Luthien the Fair you shall have neither
the ring nor me" to movie Arwen's macho taunt. ;)

Good gracious! That quote in the book make me shiver it's so wonderful. One of the best.

I, too, much preferred the book's version over the use of Arwen in this manner in the movie. That line from Frodo is a great line that should have been included in the movie, even if it had been given to Arwen.
