It's never too early to plan ahead for really good Tolkien events!
The 'Tolkien Ensemble' will be giving a series of concerts in Copenhagen on March 26, 27, 28, 2009. They will take place in the Concerthuset and feature well-known music of the LotR by both the Ensemble and Howard Shore as well as an excerpt from the Ensemble's new Hobbit musical, which will be presented to the public at that time. Christopher Lee is to narrate.
Caspar Reiff, one of the Ensemble's founding members and composers, gave this information at the German Tolkien Society's summer meeting. Quite a number of DTG (said society) members - including myself - are planning to travel to Copenhagen to hear the concert.
Any Europeans who wish for further information please contact me - or perhaps Rune... :)

For me, Copenhagen in March sounds a bit early in the season. I've enough brisk weather here to go looking for it in Europe! ;)
Chances are, though, that I might be in the balmier clime of Florence some time in April. Now, I've always imagined Minas Tirith as an Italian city, but I can't say I'll be there for a Tolkien connection per se.

Well, yes, it has come to pass that I will be in Rome and Florence come spring, in fact, in just over three weeks. Good bye snow. I've been looking for some sort of explicit, specific Tolkien tie-in but they're a bit hard to find in Italy. Interesting that he seems to have many Spanish fans, but few Italian?
Here's my room with a view (http://www.hotellascaletta.it/gallery.cfm) We can but hope that the weather will be warm enough for that roof top terrace to be enjoyed. ;)
And still thinking of this one in Rome: It was good enough for Keats and Shelley (http://www.hotelnavona.com/eng/home.php)
Ciao, Downers.

I went in mid -late February and it was not warm exactly save for the last afternoon when t shirts were the order of the day it was sunny and bright and very pleasant for walking around. The extra month should mean it is positively balmy especially in comparison to your frozen North ;).
Great location too and looks good value (even to a Brit in these days of the feeble pound). I am sure you will have a fantastic time.

Bb, there have been Italian speakers at the German Tolkien Seminar, most notably a Franciscan monk, Father William* Spirito. And I remember that Tolkien and his daughter Priscilla were in Italy for a holiday, including experiencing an operatic performance. I'll try to get some information for you.
Wish I could be there as well, but I'll be going the opposite direction for a Tolkien experience that weekend - a Tolkien Ensemble concert in Copenhagen!

A pity we can't meet, Esty. Copenhagen in early spring. Not much warmer than here! Thanks for that info about Tolkien's visit with Priscilla. As it turns out, the hotel we ultimately decided upon in Rome is half a block from the Opera House. Maybe I'll be able to find an historical marker, "JRR Tolkien sat here" on one of the chairs. (Or place one myself. ;) )
I have found a rather dismal note about Tolkien's reception in Italy: Left right, left right, left right, right (http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2001/09/27/27386-tolkien-used-as-political-football-in-italy-2/) and One says racist; another says racialist (http://www.tolkiengesellschaft.de/v4/alleszutolkien/news/news20030103.shtml). (Scroll down to the English bit on that German site.) *sighs*
And thanks for the weather predictions, Mithalwen. I have found an online weather forecast for Rome (http://www.accuweather.com/world-index-forecast.asp?partner=30510&myadc=0&traveler=0&zipcode=EUR|IT|IT007|ROME|) with daily and two week projections. Now I have two sets of weather predictions to grumble about. (Isn't that what weather forecasts are for?)

Eh? Hobbit musical!?! Do tell!
Tolkien Ensemble has done an outstanding job of bringing Tolkien's songs to tunes. (I have finally forgiven them, at last, for their version of "Eomer's Song." They have done many, many more great works that make up for it.)
"Gondor, Gondor, between the mountains and the sea", and "Silver flow the streams" are magnificent. Truly magnificent. And their version of "The Ent and the Entwife" is incomparable.

What shall TOlkien Ensemble do for THe Hobbit, we wonders, preciouss, we wonders? Shall they sing Tra Lala Lally?
Shall they! Oh, do, she cried, jumping up and down and clapping excitedly. Do, do, tralalala!
And you must, you really must, sing Roll Roll Rolling down the hole! Heave ho, splash plump! Oh, hurrah!
Gaffer William Gamgee continues his rant:

I'm sorely tempted to risk a day out to Sarehole...I wonder if it's on a bus route into Brum city centre - it's feasible to bring ye Childe for a couple of hours if I can get him onto a train. Course, he'll have to be able to crawl around once he gets there...

For Helen (and other possible fans of Carroll's nonsense poetry): that reminds me - almost seven years ago I wrote an LotR parody of that very poem! Here it is: You are old... (http://www.forum.barrowdowns.com/showpost.php?p=20779&postcount=105)
It begins:
‘You are old, Uncle Bilbo,’ young Frodo said,
‘And your age should be showing by now;
Yet you look well-preserved besides being well-fed,
Just what is your secret, say how?’
That whole thread (http://www.forum.barrowdowns.com/showthread.php?t=1265) is well worth re-reading - so much fun stuff!

Actually can't believe how it is little more than an hour by train. And he will be 18 months+ by then and will love a train trip I bet . Will probably take me as long to get from Rugby if I visit the hobbit folk ;) . Actually can't believe that I have never been since it is close to where my Dad's family lived... but they aren't interested...
Oh Morris Dancers are scary - though possibly not as scary as the other entertainment if Oxonmoot is a guide...

I think Tolkien said that Venice had a look of Old Gondor in the letters so your imagination is in good company!
Earthquakes aren't quite the same as Mount Doom, but I certainly had a momentous leave-taking of Italy.
While there, I did see several paintings, engravings, images and references to eagles carrying men, particularly the eagle of a particular god. And I did see lots of wargs in the art, although the most important one was suckling--not an image conducive to Tolkien's wargs! ;)
But all in all I saw so many nudes, of both the butt (and other parts) nekkid variety and the oak and fig leaf entailed variety, that it was a stretch to think of Middle earth. (I should say, though, that Botticelli's clothed females could well be imagined as elven, particularly in the Primavera--which is not a bad idea, as Botticelli was playing with ancient mythology.) And it is probably worth noting that historical record of the English in Florence and Rome is not one that particularly speaks well of olde colde Englonde. Tolkien might even have been a bit miffed by it all, unless he saw it as a rejection of the mindless mechanism he so deplored.
So I think that the search will have to be narrowed down to Venice in the next trip to Europe. After all, once one makes it over the pond, any other distance in Europe is a piece of cake, so it shouldn't be too difficult to make a Venice/London/Oxford run. ;)

The German Tolkien Society's Tolkien Seminar takes place in Hannover this coming weekend. Registration is not necessary and there are no fees to pay; the only costs participants have are travel and accommodation. This year's theme is: "Violence, Conflict and War in Tolkien" - an interesting topic! For details please see the programme (http://www.tolkiengesellschaft.de/deutsche-tolkien-gesellschaft/tolkien-seminar-2/tolkien-seminar-2009/). Lectures are partly in German, partly in English, with international speakers.
I will definitely be there, though I'm not actively involved this year. It would be fun to meet other European Downers at the event!

If it is what I think it is, it is a very clever idea, highly original and unique, superbly chosen. And with Esty's excellent seamstress skills, it will be very well done. (Hint: I don't think it will include spandex.)
Having blown all the holiday money (and expended a few carbon footprints) on a trip to Italy this spring, regretfully at this point I think I'll have to pass on Oxonmoot again this year. Can someone explain this to me. On the usual TS website the Oxonmoot page looks like this;
http://www.tolkiensociety.eu/oxon/index.html
It still says "Next Oxonmoot will be held in Oxford from the 25th to the 28th of September 2008 in Christ Church", which is last year's Oxonmoot.
However, if you do a Google search for 'Oxonmoot' you can find this page;
http://www.oxonmoot.org/index.php
Which says "Oxonmoot 2009 will take place at Lady Margaret Hall from 25th September 2009 to 27th September 2009".
Has the TS made a separate website for Oxonmoot then?

It's a bit too far for a day trip, but I'm thinking we may manage one night as we could find one of these Travel Inns cheap on the outskirts - this all depends on the car being 'fit' though - part of the bonnet has popped up by half an inch and if you drive fast it's quite terrifying because it sounds like you're in a jumbo jet
Oddly, I wish they'd not actually have Oxonmoot in Oxford as it's an impossible place to get to - horrible to drive around, impossible to park and just that bit too expensive on the train. So, I'm looking forwards to the event in 2012 in Loughborough! ;)

I am going to consider a trip, actually going to Oxonmoot would be a waste as we'd just have to take it in turns to entertain the Whirlwind, but we'll have to see what transport and money allows! I have visions of my bonnet flying open one day soon and having to drive like one of the Dukes of Hazzard, hangin' outta the window :D

I think you need to go retro and get a strap like on an old Jag XK 120 :D Industril quantities of duck tape might do it.. or enterprise do weekend hire rates starting at about Ł12 a day if you are really worried. I booked the cheapest car and got upgraded 3 levels :D But you can get much cheaper all risks insurance separately on line than the one they try to flog you.
Oxford isn't impossible to get to - but it is a beastly place to drive around these days. As I discovered after some location misinformation last time *coughKathcough* which meant I actually did have to drive round :( and all the little places I used to park have been double yellowed. It is daytrippable for me (though it seems that they are always doing work on the line Oxonmoot weekend but it depends on a few things.

What a pity... I was sad because the German Tolkien Society didn't seem to meet anywhere in the northwest for something special, and now that I'm studying in the south of Germany, where I thought they would rather plan something, I find out the Seminar for 2010 is in the east. :(
Surely, a curse of Morgoth.
When I'm back at my own home PC with the German Tolkien Society information, I'll PM you with some possibilities for meeting other Tolkien fans in northern Germany, TM. There are smials (Stammtische) in several cities, including Hannover and Hamburg - if our timing is right, we might even meet there some time, as I now live up north as well.
I'm delighted that Ms. Berry is coming to Oxonmoot! The list of our allies grows! Hookbill, I will be in Oxford a day early, so definitely would be there and willing to meet you and any other Downers earlier on Friday. Anyone for a drink at the Bird and Baby?
Rune, Squatter, narfforc, it will be a pleasure, as always! Mithalwen, I don't remember - will you be coming this year? poison ivy has mentioned that she will be attending.
Lal and Dave, it would be a great delight to see you and the Elflet - I do hope you find a way to come for a day or two. I will miss my erstwhile roommate Guinevere this year - unless she decides to come at the last minute...

Registration doesn't begin till 17:30, so we could meet at 15:00 or 16:00 and still have plenty of time.

A change of meeting place has been suggested; since those of us who've been there already know the B&B, how about getting together Friday afternoon at the Lamb and Flag, just across the road? It's another Inkling/Tolkien pub, even if it doesn't have framed documents about hams on the wall! ;)

The Lamb and Flag used to be one of the few pubs in Oxford that hadn't been tarted up - I haven't been in there for years so I don't know if the campaign to preserve its authentic charm succeeded but it used to be favourite haunt. It is just across St Giles' from The Bird and Baby. But that is not so handy for LMH.

Rune murdered everyone.
EVERYONE.
I just got in after an arduous train journey of many delays and unscheduled stops, so forgive me for being brief and wanting to sleep and edit a silly newspaper...
Friday was cool. Met Rune and Narf in the Lamb and Flag where upon we had a massive political debated of tremendous insanity. Well, what did you expect? We met Esty and headed off to LMH. There we waited for Squatter, Bethberry and Edward the Confessor. Sadly, Ed never made it as he was busy inventing the word 'if' and selling jellied eels to orphans. But I digress...
I'd never met Beth before, so that was nice. We had some brief Doctor Who discussions, naturally. I mean, that's what Oxonmoot is about... isn't it? Anyway, Squatter, Rune and I managed to weird everyone else out a lot and I think we drove them away. Or, at least, drove them to the bar.
The Welcome dinner was very BIG and made me want to explode. Which was... um... not actually that uncommon for me at the moment. :(
Saturday was full of the good, the strange and the "WHAT THE ANGBAND IS THAT!?" kind of things. I'll give a detailed account of the lectures when my brain is working properly. But Esty did us all proud in her talk. Woo!
The party was great too! I especially liked Rune's costume. :p
Esty's Iroeth costume was amazing! I really liked the detail on it and thought the tea was a perfect touch. But then, I may be bias towards tea... Poison Ivy also came dressed as Beruthiel with two small cats of the stuffed veriety.
Esty, Ivy and I won awards for our silliness.
I've uploaded my pictures to FACE BOOK (http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=112198&id=508873931&ref=mf), yo. My camera was a little... rubbish and the batteries were not good. So you may want to wait for the others to bring more photos of good.

I'm sorry I missed it! It's not often you get to see someone die for a second time.

We all enjoyed having a group with which to spend time, and once again managed to adopt a first-timer and (hopefully!) convert her to joining us here. Random comments: The weekend was definitely too short. The food was fantastic. The weather was lovely. The talks were quite varied in subject, style, and quality. I really enjoyed Caspar Reiff's recordings (both sound and picture) of pieces from the Tolkien Ensemble's new Hobbit musical, which is in the works. The big hit of the evening entertainments was the Slovenian Society's hilarious comic film of the tale of Turin.
I always love seeing the various costumes - the imagination and work that people put into them are fantastic. And I'm always inspired to future costume planning and making when I've been there - my next one is going to be great fun! But "shhh" to those of you who were there and heard about my ideas - not a word in public, please!

Oxonmoot was too short, but socially it was very good. Although I do fear that Squatter, Hooky and have scared everybody away. Especially our "Did you know that Edward the Confessor. . ." game seemed to strike fear into our enemies (and friends) hearts.
I arrived in Oxford quite early and had many hours to kill before check in before the others arrived or even check in to my hostel. I spend most of these in The eagle and child, here the bartender served me some awful drink named "Snake Bite" that the youth of Enlgand apparently like, I found it truly awful. Later I moved to the lamb and flag, I must have waited 30 min. or so before Hookbill showed up and later so Narfforc.
The three of us had great fun and not only did we solve all the worlds problems, we also established the fact that Narfforc lives in a pond.
It was really great to talk a bit to Narfforc this moot (last year he was not too well), I also talked alot more with Guinevere this time arround.
Bethberry is a truly lovely person with a great sense of humour, also she is very tolerant. . .she showed that by spending hours in the company of drunken versions of Squatter and I.
I especially liked it when she asked us "did you guys invent each other?"
I also met up with Kath monday afternoon in London before heading home to Copenhagen.
Maybe, just maybe, I will make a more structured entry and post it on "I met a fellow. . ."

My reactions exactly. I remember drinking that a very long time ago, on occasion, in a very ironic kind of way. The subsequent hangovers were sadly anything but ironic.
In short, I think the barman was taking the wotsit.
I think everyone has to try it once just to see how grim it is, and to say they've had it. But it's quite a long, long way from a nice way to get drunk. For the same reasons, also avoid Special Brew and any home brewed beer a student might offer you. Ewwww.... ;)

Whoah Snakebite! Severe, Rune, very severe!
Maybe Barliman thought you were a Fresher - that could explain it.
(pint of 1:1 mix of cider and lager for those unfamiliar, and back in the day livened up with blackcurrant and one or more shots of vodka, and possibly drunk through a straw, frankly I'm surprised I remember anything of '87!)
Saying that though I tried Stella and Grenadine in France and it was surprisingly OK.
Ooops sorry distracted by booze, Hope you all had a great time in Oxford!!!

I would not have objected to the snakebit had it not been for the fact that it was made of the worst bevrages in the world! (Strongbow and Fosters)

I loved Morse!
I have tried to watch that spin-off "Lewis", but I am not overly fond of it.
Morse rocks, and the first episode of Lewis rocks as well.

As Rune said, Oxonmoot was too short, though lovely.:) (I had to cope with the difference between it and Oxonmoot 2008, which was a day longer. Even then, I admit, I thought it a little too short!)
While I had met Esty and other Downers at Oxonmoot 2008, I didn't join till after; so it was nice to meet you all in 2009 as a fellow Downer! :D
I spent a few days in Bath, the first time I'd been there, and went over to Oxford on the Thursday. Esty and I had arranged to meet at 4.00 p.m., to look at the Bate Collection of Musical Instruments, which we did, and found it very impressive.
We wandered around Oxford, later had dinner, and said goodnight. We unexpectedly met up on the Friday morning in Blackwells; and I was able to show her some of the sights in that bookshop!
In terms of other remarks, I agree with what Esty said about the weather and the food. (I first met her at Oxonmoot 2007, also held in Lady Margaret Hall, my memories also including the food.)
I was at Jessica Yates's talk on Astynax, which was very good. I didn't get the opportunity for any more talks; because I was preparing for the panel discussion I was doing with Esty, and for my own talk later. Sadly, her talk and mine were on at the same time; so we gave summaries to each other on the Thursday.
The first picture posted does me justice, the second doesn't; but that was my own fault!;)
It was great to see people again, including fellow Downers, as well as newcomers!

Bah. You should have gone anyway. RL friends are for uh, real people. Which we are emphatically not. ;) Hope you decide to go in 2011!Oi! What about me? I'm not worthy enough to be your friend anymore? ;)

Having returned home just last night (if I'm going to pay all that money to fly across the pond, I'm going to stay for more than a weekend), it appears I am the last one to post about Oxonmoot. This was my first Oxonmoot and a thoroughly enjoyable, fantastic time it was, a great delight in being amongst so many Tolkien enthusiasts. Lady Margaret Hall, although a bit of a hike from the centre of Oxford, provides an idyllic setting amidst its gardens, excellent fare, and none too shabby student accommodations.
I will be posting on the "I met a fellow Downer" thread, but to complete the picture of Oxonmoot I thought I'd post a few more photos of the festivities.
Before the masquerade party we enjoyed a barbeque on the garden terrace. Some of us are missing, but I'm not going to photoshop anyone in--that's Hooky's speciality. Here's Squatter, Poison Ivy, Hookbill, a Downer-in-training, Faramir Jones, and Estelyn.

Estelyn has sewn a book to collect her Tolkien adventures and souvenirs and it includes a page for Downers' signatures. Here's a look at that page:

Enyalie at Tolkien's gravesite commemorates not only The Professor but the friendships we have formed from sharing our enthusiasm for his work. This year we also paid respects to someone who has ably supported that thirst for information and understanding. Humphrey Carpenter's grave is a short walk away from Tolkien's. If ever I am able to attend another Oxonmoot, I will remember to bring flowers to his grave.

I had met Estelyn and Squatter five years ago--five years!--but this year it was a great delight to meet other Downers--Guinevere, Rune, Poison Ivy, Hookbill, Faramir Jones, narfforc. Kudos to the Tolkien Society for providing such an opportunity.

Snakebite with vodka in it? Frankly, sir, I'm surprised you're still alive!

Yes, I remember seeing Humphrey Carpenter's grave, and also John Tolkien's grave which is nearby. Did you see that too? Though I think the TS do put some flowers there.

I spend most of these in The eagle and child, here the bartender served me some awful drink named "Snake Bite" that the youth of Enlgand apparently like, I found it truly awful.
We have something for the youth here called "Purple Jesus" that I believe must be similarly awful.
Bethberry is a truly lovely person with a great sense of humour, also she is very tolerant. . .she showed that by spending hours in the company of drunken versions of Squatter and I.
I especially liked it when she asked us "did you guys invent each other?"
I'm not so sure it's tolerance or simply inertia. ;) I mean, at one point I was deciding on which session to attend (when there were conflicting sessions, something that happened with regretable regularity), simply by choosing the one which would be followed in the same room by another preference. Although I do enjoy good humour. :smokin:

Father John had already passed on when I was last at the cemetary, five years ago, so I knew where to find it. I don't recall that the TS placed any flowers on his grave, though.

I found a neat little album of photos from Oxonmoots past and present... well... past anyway. Spot as many Downers as you can.

There's a good one of Esty from this year up there.

Nice find! I've just been having a nightmare moving files around to the new computer and found a load of photos from Oxonmoot 06, 04 and Birmingham 05. I'll have to bung them into a folder on Facebook (I spent part of this evening making a folder of photos of trees though so this shows you how much I procrastinate...).
I spotted some folks I've met on those - now I will never again say "if I go next year" because you know how ruddy useless we are at getting organised :(, but if I do, then you'll have to meet a couple of lovely real 'old timers' we know who have some fabulous tales to tell.
EDIT - I've just found a really old pic of davem on that Flickr stream :D
