Phantasy Thread: Arda Cup Football 2009

Welcome to the Phantasy Team Competition! :)

You will select your team members from the rosters available below, and will be awarded points according to how your players fare in their tournament games.

You must have one GK (goal keeper) and then you can use one of the following formations found below. (Formations listed as DF-MF-FW)

5-4-1
4-5-1
3-6-1
4-4-2
4-3-3


In other words, if you choose 4-4-2, then you want to place 4 defenders, 4 midfielders, and 2 fowards on your team along with the goalie of your choice.

In addition, during group play you may not choose more than 3 players from one team.

Rules for gaining points are as follows.

Goal by FW- 4 pts
Goal by MF- 5 pts
Goal by DF- 6 pts
Assist- 3 pts
Shutout, GK- 4 pts
Shutout, DF- 4 pts
Shutout, MF- 1 pt
Allows 1 goal, GK- 2 pts
Allows 1 goal, DF- 2 pts
3 GK saves- 2 pts
Yellow Card- -1 pts
Red Card- -3 pts


And just like last time you can gain extra points for pretourney and playoff predictions! :)

And this year we're going to have a star system for drafting your team. Players with a star by them are considered by Arda Kicker Magazine to be solid players with a higher liklihood of scoring than other players at their position. Players with 2 stars are the cream of the crop, and are the most likely to gain points at their position. The team they play on and their name recognition can contribute slightly to their star status. And of course, there is no guarantee that star players will score more. It's just more likely.

The team that you select may not exceed SIX total stars. (number may change after conversation with co-mods, and it might go up for the playoffs as well)

Note on the rosters- If a MF or DF is listed lower down the roster (towards the FWs), then they are more likely to be involved in the offense than those MFs or DFs listed higher up towards the GK. Of course, there is no guarantee MFs closer to FWs will score more, but their chances are generally better.

Note on trades- After the first two rounds of group play, you can draft a completely new team. Unlimited trades. After the third and final round of group play, you are allowed six trades. After each playoff round, you are allowed only two trades. Do not under any circumstances edit your old teams once play has started. If you want to trade someone, make a new post stating the trade and list your new team.

Each of those will be worth TEN bonus points. :cool:

And then, predict the winner and runner up from each of the eight groups. Predicting the winner is worth 3 points. The runner up is worth 1. If you select the correct two teams but have their positions reversed, you will be awarded 2 points. So that's a possible THIRTY-TWO points right there!

Predictions:

GROUP A
Angband - Ancalagon, amazing 'fire' power and the best player in the entire group. Plus solid defense, should win group easily.
Alqualonde - I think they will upset the host Moria, who from what I remember typically has some team problems. Osse and Cirdan should be good enough to move them past the 1st round, but no further.
Moria (H) - They have Durin's Bane, but hey suspect defense and team chemistry will be a problem. And I doubt even being the host team will help...their fans are more likely to slay their own players, let alone cheer for them.
Minas Tirith - Aren't going anywhere. Only weapon is Aragorn and when all your defenders are older than the shelf life of twinkies you have a problem.

Group B
Mirkwood (H) - Scatha will lead the team...I really love dragons as players.
Nargothrond - See above, they have Glaurung, plus Beren and Mablung, but Scatha will still dominate the group. Solid defense that will help Orodreth.
Arnor - Will be the best defensive team of the group, but lack the scoring ability of Mirkwood and Nargothrond.
Helm's Deep - Won't win a game, this is a tough group, but even if they were in the D-lister league these guys still wouldn't win one.

Group C
Hithlum - Feanor, hands down the best player in the whole tournament, this team will go deep into the tourney.
Gondolin - Have the talent to win a group, but not a group that has Hithlum.
Minas Morgul - The WK and...?
Isengard (H) - They would probably be able to beat Helm's Deep, but won't beat anyone in this group

Group D
Eregion - They will win a lot of games 1-0, but they will win a lot of games. ;)
Erebor (H) - Smaug...have to continue to go with the teams that have dragons.
Osgiliath - The defense could be good enough to upset Erebor, but no one will beat Eregion.
Mordor - These guys really have fallen apart from the past years that I remember at least.

Group E
Lothlorien (H) - probably the weakest and most wide open group, anyone can win it. But with Galadriel it is Lothlorien's to lose.
Doriath - Her protege, Galadriel has turned out stronger, but Melian is someone who will be difficult to score on.
Dor-Lomin - I am not sold on Turin, as someone who can carry a team past the 1st round
Armenelos- Sauron is one of the most overrated players in the tournament and being paired with Ar-Pharazon, the chemistry will not work.


Group F
Taniquetil - Solid team all around, they will win the group handily.
Edoras - my early round upset pick. They don't have any glaring superstars, but will work well together. Eorl will provide the offense, Eomer and Eowyn are underrated.
Dorthonion - Most people might pick Dorthonion over Edoras, but that won't happen.
The Shire (H) - The only reason I have the hobbits 4th in their group is because they have no talent and will have to rely on the referees to do anything. It is well known that they always get preferential treatment from the refs, and that should continue, but they still won't win...that's how bad the talent is on this team.

Group G
Tol-In Gaurhoth - Should win this group, but it will be a battle, they have yet to field their entire team, which means they will not have had many days to practice together.
Gondor - The quick strike attack and combo from Boromir, Faramir, and Imrahil will get Gondor past the first round, but no farther.
Tuna (H) - Overrated, plus they will lose Finarfin to injury after running into TIG and Eomer. ;)
Brethil - One of the worst teams

Group H
Valimar - Stout defense and early reports say Melkor has become a much better team player, if so, this group will be tough to beat, even past group play.
Bree (H) - Nothing will get past the might tree goal-tending and the painfully annoying Tom Bombadil will cause many of Bree's opponents to run on their own swords.
Romenna - With Valimar and Bree in their group, Romenna won't be able to score.
Amon Sul - only difference maker is Elendil, and that will not be enough.

Most Goals - Feanor
Most Assists - Hurin
Most Total points - Maedhros
Champion - Hithlum, will be the 2nd best defensive team (behind Eregion) but Feanor and Maedhros will scare more teams than Glorfindel and Gil-Galad

2. Arnor- After an early goal by Scatha, Arnor finally sort themselves out.

Group C:
1. Hithlum - everyone on their team is good, and most are amazing. If they don't win, they'll definately come close.
2. Gondolin - most of their players are reasonably good, but there might be some rivavlry between Ecthelion and Gothmog.

Group D:
1. Eregion - Score one goal at the beginning, then a mithril defence for the rest of the game. 1-0 on all games.
2. Osgiliath - Most players of a high standard. Their relatively strong defence counteracts Smaug's well-played but isolated attacks.

Group E:
1. Lothlorien - Many saves, but few goals scored.
2. Armenelos - Spread of good players.

Group F:
1. Taniquetil- One of the best all-star (almost) teams in the tournament.
2. Dorthonion- After a tense equalised game, Dorthonion beat the Shire.

Group G:
1. Tol-in-Gaurhoth- One of the best teams there, but haven't had much time to play together
2. Tuna - Finwe and Miriel make a deadly combination and can only be defeated by the amassed quality of the TiG team.

Group H:
1. Valimar - Really an all-star team. They're the Valar! Melkor will turn score a lot - By his own designs, though, which will render the team useless at some points. When he doesn't have the ball, Eonwe who is well known for his team play will easily score a few more.
2. Bree - Old Man Willow has the largest reach of any of the other players, while Tom Bombadil's singing while scoring an incredible number of goals should boost his team's morale, while lowering everyone else's.

I have a few questions about the tournament. How exactly is it decided which team wins? Also why did Phantom start running the tournament? I am wondering cause it looks like someone named Sleepy started the whole tournament back in 2005.

Hakon- the tournament is simulated after I've done a few.... um... tweaks to the teams. ;)

Yes, I think Sleepy started the whole football tournament thing, but if I'm remembering correctly 2007 was the first time we actually had a competition and such with points. It was very fun, but due to scheduling conflicts the organizers (Sleepy and Arctic) were never able to finish it. It particularly made me sad seeing as I was running away with the points lead. :p

The next year some of us wanted to do it again, so we did, simple as that. Sleepy is out of the mix now primarily because we were never able to contact him and he hasn't been seen on this site for two years.

You know what would be great, at the end of each game a summary of how many points each player scored, not goals, points. That way we can have a 'real-time' tally of how we are doing that week...or does that 'real-time' scoring require the premium account and I must pay a fee?;)

Heh heh... yes Morm, real time points results are for gold-level members only. It's $29.95 per month. :p But seriously, we haven't been doing that simply because it creates more work for the writers who have their own teams to manage and such. Currently I try to do the complete list after all the games are posted, but there's nothing stopping you from looking at who you have and figuring up your points on a piece of paper if you can't wait. ;)

Although, tp, if you could post your complete list again after Rd 2, so I can check to make sure I'm keeping track of the points properly. I am not much of a math person (recently I found 3+4 to be rather difficult :rolleyes: ). Anyway, I could post the individual points after the matches come out, no problem...and I won't charget anything to the tournament committee either ;)

If Tuna gets out any time soon it will be when they most likely go up against Valimar. Tuna will beat Mirkwood and Valimar will beat Minas Tirith. Haha, thanks...I wanted to do some sort of writing/reaction for the games, and thought about bringing back the "BCS"...erm soccer...power rankings like from the 1st year.
