View Full Version : Forum Glitches?

It's possible (or probable) I've gone totally mad, but I'm almost certain my post count has dropped by about 20 posts today.
Not only that, but when I today reported two spam threads, which in my understanding is done by e-mail, I saw my post count rise by a corresponding number!
How very odd.

You get a second chance to do your 2000th post. :p

Maybe a mod deleted an old thread which had your posts?

Inziladun
11-07-2009, 08:33 PM
If reporting posts counts as a post for me, then those posts I reported were deleted, that would explain it, I guess.
I've never noticed the phenomenon before, though.

Observant wights don't miss a trick!

In fact, since we set up the infraction system that lets us easily ban spammers, the forum has been set to automatically generate both Reported Post and Infraction Notification threads in the moderator's forum. It's been over two years, I think, so consequently we had a few hundred threads junking up the forum. In recent months, spammers have become such a nuisance that normal threads are quickly buried under these automatic threads.

When I realized yesterday that I had missed a couple of threads that could have used my attention because of this, I did indeed go and do a mass deletion. I did some rebuilding of stats, but I didn't realize that it would affect post counts. Sorry about the reduction, but consider it a badge of honor for being such a sharp-eyed spam-hunter. ;)

Has anyone else found the Calendar to be stuck on Dec. 2012? It simply won't advance from that for me.

It's been stuck like that since... well, I dunno. But I remember trying sometime in December to open the January calendar, and it didn't work, and hasn't been working ever since. So now I can't predict how many Downer birthdays there'll be the following week. :p

For several days I've had repeating lines of error messages appearing at the top of the forum page (above The Barrow Downs logo). They read:

Deprecated: Assigning the return value of new by reference is deprecated in /home/barrowwight/public_html/forum.barrow/includes/class_core.php on line 2381

The lines of error messages (about 10) do not interfere with options on the board or posting. It just looks messy. And I don't like to feel "deprecated".

P.S. In re options on the board working: I'll take that back. Everyone's avatars are missing.

One more reason not to visit the Downs at work (not that I didn't recently google Teleporno there to help out Lush on facebook). ;) In case the information is useful, the thread that took me to find an adult friend (none of them quite my type, thank you) was this (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/showthread.php?t=18564), although I don't think it's a thread-specific problem.

Blimey!

I haven't experienced this particular peculiarity. Continue to post as much detailed information as possible if there are more occurrences. What links were you clicking when you were redirected? Is this happening to you with sites other than the Downs? Were you using a Windows product, an Apple, a phone, something else?

To be on the safe side, I'd suggest that anyone who's experienced a redirect should run virus and/or spam scans -- there's a chance that the problem is on your computer rather than the site.

Right now the best thing is simply to gather as much information as possible.

Mister U, I had it happen on two different desktop computers, both using Google Chrome. The first time I was clicking User CP. I don't remember what I clicked the second time, but I think it was a thread in The Books.

I haven't experienced it since those two occurrences, and it hasn't happened on any other site.

Actually, yes. The first thing I usually click from the main forum site is User CP, to see what threads I'm interested have activity. How bizarre.

I've heard that from one other person, though I have yet to experience it myself. My anti-virus log always shows "medium" threat attempts each period, so it may have happened and I'm just not aware.

Now that I think of it, the Russian site could have been my fault as I posted a couple birthday wishes in Russian recently. My theory is that it takes any "relevant" information from the forum and redirects from the site based on that. I've never actually been redirected, so I don't know how randomly it's occuring, and when a website is blocked I don't see the name of the site.

Quite a number of members with suspicious screennames on here right now. Of course I could be misjudging them. It could be that 7xsdfs7d304, jingsd304 and the rest are just innocent Tolkien enthusiasts...

Wow, I cross-edited with your post about the exact same thing. Since when are there so many at the same time? :(

Their names will show in our list as new members. But they can't post. And they will disappear from the member list when I delete them.

Ah, ah, good! I saw one numerical member post and wondered if somehow the numbers allowed them to slip through.

Thanks for the improvement.

I hope the moderating won't interfere with your running adventures. :)

The similarities with the names points to a common source. I've seen some of their posts in French. I hope we haven't angered CJRT? :D

Did I hear "running" is among the BW's pastimes? Is there another Downer besides me who gets up at 5 AM only to go sweat and get sore mucles? ;)

Still no new re-directs. Hopefully, any members who took a temporary leave from the forum for that reason will return now.

I'm fairly sure this is related to the earlier glitch problem - has anyone else been signed up on the Russian Brides site? I (or rather, my email address) was, and by the name Jesper at that! Alas I was negligent enough to delete my account before checking out what kind of fake profile they'd made for me.

That's pretty bizarre. I never had any issues stemming from the re-directs, to my knowledge. I did spend last week having to re-install my anti-virus program, but that seemingly had nothing to do with this forum.

Hi, Fernie, reading light on dark can be harder for some people. I will let the powers answer your question but if you scroll down the page to Thread options and click on show printable version it will show as plain black on white. Hope that helps.

This is a relatively minor matter, but the past several days I've had problems with the forum loading.

I get 'connection timed out' messages, and when the pages finally load, sometimes the icons are missing.

It doesn't seem to be happening on other sites.

This is actually my second attempt making this post. The first timed out.

I'm at a different computer today, using a different ISP. Same problems: slow loading, some timeout messages, and sometimes missing icons.

Is the only image you are able to see a pair of burnt, withering hands encompassed in flame? If so, I suggest you get your Palantir serviced.

The Palantír warranty expired the year 1030 of the First Age. Since I'm not paying Noldor, Inc. for shipping Over Sea, parts, and labor, I'll just get a cheaper alternative (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_8-Ball).

For the last couple hours I've been redirected to a white-and-blue themed search site with various suggested LOTR search terms when I tried to get to this site. I have no idea what that was, but it was somewhat amusing. Did anyone else witness that teleportation?

Downers on Facebook contacted the Barrow Wight about the problem and Mithadan was able to find out how to correct the domain issue, which the BW promptly did.

There's aiya 'Lo and behold' in Quenya, as in Fingon's words before the Nirnaeth: Aiya eldalië ar atanatari, utúlië 'n aure! 'Behold, people of the Eldar and Fathers of Men, the day has come!' :)

I was freaking out when I went to the Downs a few days ago and it wasn't there anymore. Since I'm taking a break from Facebook, I couldn't check the Facebook group for any news. Thankfully, I was able to text aganzir, who told me what was going on. Every time the Downs comes offline for some reason, I get jittery thinking that's the end of the Downs forever. I'm glad to see it back.

Huh, I'm on my phone and it opens fine. But then my phone doesn't usually stop me from clicking links that my computer says are deceptive sites. I'll check again on Monday when I have my computer back.

I'm still getting the same result, only on that thread. A forbiddingly red screen that sadly doesn't say "You shall not pass!", but instead says something about the site being a target of 'attackers' (I was going to copy/paste the message but couldn't).

EDIT: The warning looks to be from Google Chrome.

The warning appears to be triggered by a link (or image) from thefunnyblog.org. That site may be affected by malware.

Edit: do not go to that site.

It seems it wasn't you, as the same thing is still happening. All I can figure is that something else that's been on the thread a long while has just now become a source of trouble.
