The Rankin-Bass Hobbit was later than that ... could it be referring to the radio version with Paul Daneman as Bilbo? There was also an audio with Nicol Williamson reading the story and voicing the parts, I believe - not sure when, though.

I just searching about it,and i found that it was made by snyder in an attempt to prolong his conctract with tolkien.it was 12 minutes long, and very weird.here some of the changes:
-smaug=slag
-trolls=groans(yes,they really called it groans)
-thorin=general thorin
-gollum=gooloom
-a new character called princess mika who will marry bilbo after the quest
-no dwarf, just thorin, slag, groans, gooloom, gandalf(who become generic wizard in the tower in this movie),p.mika, and bilbo, who kill slag with the arkenstone and marry mika.but i never see any picture or video of it.has any one see it?

Sorry, I don't know how to "fancy" up a link. You may have to copy and paste. I did a search for "the hobbit 1966" on Youtube.
