Wow, I would have said "death" for the answer to that, even though if you believe in an afterlife it's not entirely accurate. Ruthless and tall sounds almost like a Ringwraith, or the Grim Reaper or the King of Terrors, for that matter (wow, I'm cheerful tonight smilies/wink.gif).

Susan Delgado

I still prefer "fate" as an answer to that one...

Let's not lose track of what we're doing smilies/smile.gif

I can reach out and grab you
yet, I have no hands.
Often I can hurt a person,
but people come in my presence
without much fear, anyway.
Only thing I can think of, Sam, is a movie. Is it a movie?

Any more guesses on mine?
(I pass before the sun yet leave no shadow.)

Only thing I can think of, Sam, is a movie. Is it a movie?
Nope. Not emotional. Think physical. (Sort of...) Hm. Sorry, not a good clue giver. Anyhow, it's not emotional. smilies/wink.gif
"So my plan is all spoilt!" said Frodo. "It is no good trying to escape you. But I'm glad, Sam. It is plain that we were meant to go together. "

Samwise

I pass before the sun yet leave no shadow
Ugh...I know this isn't it, but a sunspot??
"Just hold on a moment and I'll get my stuff!" cried Sam eagerly. "It's all ready. I thought we should be off today. "

Oh well, yes, you are right Tigerlily Gamgee, The answer is indeed the imagination.

Next time I will try to check on previous used riddles before leaving another.

Don't want to look like a clutz now do I! smilies/biggrin.gif

May your days be long and your journey short.

P.S.
Susan, well met, you are nobodys gilly, and I remember the face of my father.

Well, I'll give the two a shot...

Samwise - a story?
Susan - the Earth?

Samwise
04-23-2002, 06:39 PM
Samwise - a story?

Nope. AHH! Don't tell me I've accidentally thought up one of those impossibly hard ones again! I didn't mean to, honest!! smilies/frown.gif

Tigerlily--
Nope smilies/frown.gif,nope smilies/frown.gif,nope smilies/frown.gif.
"Oh, Mister Frodo, that's hard!" said Sam, shivering. "That's hard, trying to go without me and all. If I hadn't a guessed right, where would you be now? "

Tigerlily Gamgee

Well, shoot smilies/frown.gif

Samwise
04-23-2002, 08:05 PM
Umm.....the answer to my riddle is a thing, but not a person or emotion.
Sam, who had been watching his master with great concern, shook his head and muttered: "Plain as pikestaff it is, but it's no good Sam Gamgee putting in his spoke just now. "

Susan Delgado
04-24-2002, 12:09 AM
Just for clarity, a movie is not an emotion...

a car?
something predatory with big teeth, like a dinosaur or a tiger?
a tornado? no...
a really gripping novel? oh, wait, somebody already guessed "story"
electricity?
ideas?
Am I close with any of these?

That is something I pride myself on, Greenbow. I shoot with my heart, and I remember the face of my father.

If sai Delgado is incorrect with those, you could always try and give us another clue Samwise!!

Samwise
04-24-2002, 10:14 PM
Am I close with any of these?

Sigh...no. smilies/frown.gif
A clue....er...well...
Okay, the thing that does the "grabbing" is actually a part of the thing that people reach for.
"I met Sam going up the hill and told him to follow me, but plainly he did not do so. He guessed his master's mind and came back here before Frodo had gone. He did not find it easy to leave Sam behind! " - Aragorn, TTT

Susan Delgado
04-25-2002, 01:13 AM
Like a giant lobster picking somebody with its claws? No, that would actually be quite terrifying.

I believe Sai Greenbow is correct. We need a better clue...it's a physical object, part of which is not hands, but which can still grab. Does the use of the word "grab" denote a physical clutching, or something less tangible?

Eee, this riddle is fun! Thanks! smilies/smile.gif

Susan Delgado
04-25-2002, 01:17 AM
Is it some kind of weapon?

Samwise
04-25-2002, 02:48 PM
"grab" denote a physical clutching, or something less tangible?

No...not a physical clutching. And no, it's not a weapon. It's...actually a part of something a gentleman might give his lady. smilies/wink.gif
BTW, I'm quite pleased that you're enjoying yourself. smilies/smile.gif
Sam passed a hand over his eyes, brushing away the tears. "Steady, Gamgee!" he said, "Think, if you can! He can't fly across rivers, and he can't jump waterfalls. He's got no gear. So he's got to get back to the boats. Back to the boats! Back to the boats, Sam! Like lightning! "

All right, I'll ask one then.

Out of the plain rises a hill.
Your feet can't reach it, try as they will.
Two hands can touch it, one eye can view it,
But try as they will, two eyes can't do it.

Mm. For some reason, Susan, this riddle makes me think: "Your nose" (just tried to reach mine with my foot--can't do it....) smilies/tongue.gif
"The log's all right," said Frodo. "There are plenty of them in the River. But leave out the eyes! "
"That I won't." said Sam. "'Twas the eyes as made me sit up, so to speak. "

I protect from invaders
but I am not particularly strong.
Many of me have fallen, perhaps daily
Some may even consider me beautiful.
What am I?
"Now Sam," said Frodo. "Don't hinder me! It's the only way! "
"Of course it is." answered Sam. "But not alone. "I'm coming too, or neither of us isn't going. I'll knock holes in all the boats, first. "

A shiny new sword?

Samwise
05-01-2002, 05:49 PM
No, Gimli, it's not a weapon.

No, not a wall...it's not a weapon, it might be considered "beautiful" or "pretty" by some. The majority of people have them.
"But I am going to Mordor."
"I know that well enough, Mr. Frodo. Of course you are. And I'm coming with you. "

Samwise

Nuranar, you're on the right track.

"But Mr. Frodo, he knows he's got to find the Cracks of Doom, if he can. But he's afraid. Now it's come to the point, he's just plain terrified. That's what his trouble is. Of course, he's had a bit of schooling, so to speak--we all have--since we left home, or he'd be so terrified he'd just fling the Ring into the River and bolt. But he's still too frightened to start. And he isn't worrying about us, either: wether we'll go along with him or no. He knows we mean to. That's another thing that's bothering him. If he screws himself up to go, he'll want to go alone. Mark my words! We're going to have trouble when he comes back. For he'll screw himself up all right, sure as his name's Baggins. "

Is that two different riddles, Susan, or one?
"This is bad!" cried Sam, jumping up. "I don't know what this Man has been up to. Why should Mr. Frodo put the thing on? he didn't ought to have;and, if he has, goodness knows what may have happened! "

Susan Delgado

Tigerlily Gamgee
05-05-2002, 12:07 PM
Susan, methinks the answer to the first one is a violin?
I don't have one for the second, but I am thinking smilies/smile.gif

Gimli Son Of Gloin
05-05-2002, 12:33 PM
The second one is a politician! Just kidding, a dead man?

Susan Delgado
05-05-2002, 09:02 PM
A violin is correct.
A dead man is not, however smilies/smile.gif

Tigerlily Gamgee
05-06-2002, 05:21 PM
Could we get a hint for the second one, Susan???

Samwise
05-06-2002, 06:10 PM

"That I won't." said Sam. "'Twas the eyes as made me sit up, so to speak. "

Susan Delgado

Ok, the second one is usually made of wood, or plastic, or ceramic.

Bragolandune
05-06-2002, 07:31 PM
Susan, is it a statue or a sculpture?

Samwise
05-06-2002, 07:42 PM
Hm. Is it a musical instrument at all, or a totally different thing?
smilies/confused.gif
"I had a funny dream an hour or two before we stopped, Mr. Frodo. Or maybe it wasn't a dream. Funny it was, anyway. "
"Well, what was it?" said Frodo, knowing that sam would not settle down until he had told his tale, whatever it was.

Tigerlily Gamgee
05-06-2002, 07:59 PM
A grandfather clock?
That's just a wild guess.

Susan Delgado
05-07-2002, 01:59 AM
It could be considered a kind of statue, although if you were to describe it that way within earshot of anyone else, you'd get a really funny look.

It is no kind of musical instrument, nor is it a clock.

Samwise
05-07-2002, 04:43 PM
Hm. This was an answer to another riddle: but--an idol? Like a Buddah?
Aragorn tended to Sam and Frodo. Sam's wound was not deep, but it looked ugly, and Aragorn's face was grave as he examined it. After a moment he looked up with relief. "Good luck, Sam!" he said, "Many have recieved worse than this in payment for the slaying of their first Orc. "

Susan Delgado
05-07-2002, 06:47 PM
Not, it is connected with no major religion, although there is one sort of psuedo religion that does use it.

Tigerlily Gamgee
05-07-2002, 07:13 PM
Hmmmm, this one is tough, Susan.
I am trying to think of all the clues you have given.
By pseudo religion, do you mean something like Witchcraft??? Or something that is similar.

Susan Delgado
05-07-2002, 07:29 PM
Similar to witchcraft, but much older (if by "witchcraft" you mean Wicca). But don't start thinking it's a religious item, because it isn't. In the psuedo religion I mean, actual practioners are few and far between. It's just a thing that some people have.

Tigerlily Gamgee
05-09-2002, 10:54 AM
I still don't know smilies/eek.gif
Another clue perhaps??? smilies/rolleyes.gif

Samwise
05-09-2002, 02:07 PM
The only thing that comes to mind is one of those little (Japanese?) cats that waves both "hello" and "goodbye". smilies/rolleyes.gif
"They're Elves," said Sam. "Can't you hear their voices? "
"Yes, they are Elves," said Legolas, "and they say that you breathe so loudly that they could shoot you in the dark."
Sam hastily put his hand over his mouth.

Susan Delgado
05-09-2002, 04:11 PM
I'm not sure quite what you mean, Sam, but I'm pretty sure that isn't it smilies/smile.gif

It's extremely common, usually associated with females, and comes in a variety of sizes, shapes, and colors.

Honestly, the ones I think will be stumpers people get right away, and the ones I think will be easy people have no clue on.....

Is it a doll, like a "worry doll"?

*The cat is a little statue with one paw raised in the air--when a guest comes in it is "waving hello" and when they leave, it is "waving goodbye".*
Sam sat in the bows, clutching the sides, and looking back wistfully to the shore. The sunlight glittering on the water dazzled his eyes.

OMG!!! Susan's first riddle is now officially my favorite of all time!!! I am a violinist!!!! That is a perfect description, and hahaha to my friend who is a violist because violas SHTINK and cannot compare to the wonderful and lovely violin. smilies/tongue.gif
Anyway, this one should be pretty easy. If anyone's heard it before, I would not be surprised at all.

Thirty white horses on a red hill,
you say "go" they stomp and fight,
you say "stop" they all stand still.

I know that's not exactly how it goes, but you can pretty much figure it out from what I put.
As for the second riddle, I have no idea. smilies/confused.gif I am no good at riddles.

Sam got it, it's a doll. Not necessarily a worry doll either, just your common, everyday little girls' toy smilies/smile.gif

Ithaeliel, I'm a very glad to have made your day, and welcome to the Downs! smilies/smile.gif

How about a couple more?

1. Where may you find roads without cars, forests without trees, and cities without houses?

Er....okay, but...how is doll "collecting" a pseudo-religion? (assuming that's what you meant). My mother collects dolls, but she and her many doll collector friends wouldn't consider it a "religion". smilies/confused.gif
He turned and saw that Sam was now standing beside him, looking round with a puzzled expresson, and rubbing his eyes as if he was not sure that he ws awake.
"It's sunlight and bright day, right enough." he said, I thought that Elves were all for moon and stars: but this is more elvish than I ever heard tell of. I feel as if I was inside a song, if you take my meaning. " smilies/smile.gif

No, I didn't mean doll collecting, I actually meant VooDoo. It's a psuedo religion because, though it believes in supernatural powers (such as that graven images have power over those they represent), it does not have any gods or other supernatural beings. I have nothing against doll collecting; in fact, I think it's quite an interesting hobby.

Wait a sec...then what did you mean by this answer?
It was Sam who had insisted on choosing him, declaring that Bill (as he called him) would pine if he did not come.
"That animal can nearly talk," he said, "and would talk, if he stayed here much longer. He gave me a look as plain as Mr. Pippin could speak it: if you don't let me go with you, Sam, I'll follow on my own. "

It's an item many people use when they travel.

Wait a sec...then what did you mean by this answer?

Well, that's usually who's associated with dolls. Little girls play with them and when they grow up they either give them up or become collectors. I guess boys play with them too sometimes, though they call theirs "action figures". I was just using this stereotype as an example. Sorry if it was inappropriate.

Tigerlily Gamgee

Ahhhh, is it a map?
I find myself never trying to go for the obvious on these. I never would've thought that answer to the other was a doll, because I was trying to come up with something on a larger scale. Oh well, I get some of them on the first try.

I wonder where Starbreeze went. I know she said she was all riddled out & had finals, or something, but I don't think I've seen her on the board at all lately smilies/frown.gif

Mm...sort of, Susan, but not the answer I'm looking for.
Sam eased the pack on his shoulders, and went over anxiously in his mind all the things which were stowed in it: his chief treasure, his cooking gear; and the little box of salt that he always carried and refilled when he could; woolen hose; linen; various small belongings of his master's that Frodo had forgotten and Sam had stowed to bring them all out in triumph when they were called for. He went through them all.

Ithaeliel

Lothiriel, I would have guessed it was an ATM machine! LOL! smilies/biggrin.gif Okay, trying to think...

This is kinda untraditional (no, it's REALLY untraditional):

A man was on his way to work. As he drove along, he saw his father and waved to him. A few minutes later, the man was involved in a serious accident. He was driven to the hospital, but his father could not get there before he was to be operated on. So the doctor came in to operate, and said, "I can't operate on this man. He is my son."

Who is the doctor?

Grrr, Susan! How come you are so good at riddles??? And where'd you hear so MANY??? Do you just make them up on the spot? *Brimming with envy*

How about a hintlet? just a little one...

Well, see, Ithaeliel, I um...kind of, collect riddles, so I've read a lot of them and know the general conventions. And, no, I don't usually make them up; I get them out of my book, which is all the best ones I've come across.

Samwise

A hintlet? Err...the only one I can think of will probably totally give it away...but...
You "find" this in school.
"But I'm beginning to think it's time we got sight of that Fiery Mountain, and saw the end of the Road, so to speak. I thought at first this here Redhorn, or whatever its name is, might be it, till Gimli spoke his peice. "

Sam, is it a memory?

Samwise
05-22-2002, 01:27 PM
Nope, still not it. Think textbooks.
Sam looked up into the pale sky, fearing to see hawks or eagles hovering over them with bright unfriendly eyes.
"You do make me feel uncomfortable and lonesome, Strider! " he said.

Bragolandune

Sam, is it history?

Samwise
05-22-2002, 02:12 PM
Bragolandune, history's it!

Suddenly a low voice murmured:
"Gil-Galad was an elven-king.
Of him the harpers sadly sing:
the last whose realm was fair and free
between the Mountains and the Sea.

His sword was long, his lance was keen,
his shining helm afar was seen;
the countless stars of Heaven's feild
were mirrored in his silver shield..

But long ago he rode away
and where he dwelleth none can say
for into darkness fell his star
in Mordor where the shadows are. "

The others turned in amazement, for the voice was Sam's.

hey daun it theres no riddles left to answer smilies/confused.gif

Susan Delgado
05-23-2002, 12:02 PM
There's always another riddle out there smilies/smile.gif

1.
In a tunnel of darkness lies a beast of iron.
It can only attack when pulled back.

I don't remember whether this one has been asked here before. If it has, then it should be really easy smilies/smile.gif

2.
This nag rides the night,
Silent with fright,
But all who are near
Know nothing to fear.

Tigerlily Gamgee
05-25-2002, 01:20 PM
I am guessing the first one to be a gun, perhaps.
In the second one... what does "nag" mean? I have only heard that word used when referring to an old horse (or someone who is bothering you, but I doubt it means that).

Samwise
05-25-2002, 01:57 PM
Yes, a "nag" is an old horse, Tigerlily, and I'm guessing that one to be a nightmare.

As for the second one, is it a bullet?
"But you can't leave poor old Bill behind in this forsaken place, Mr. Gandalf!" cried Sam, angry and distressed. "I won't have it, and that's flat. After he has come so far and all! "

Samwise
05-25-2002, 02:01 PM
Whoop, sorry, those answers are meant to be the other way around.

And with that word she held them with her eyes, and looked searchingly at each of them in turn. Sam quickly blushed and hung his head.

Susan Delgado
05-26-2002, 02:14 AM
Yes, those are correct. Was the nightmare one asked here before?

Samwise

"I don't like this at all," panted Sam just behind. "Snow's all right on a fine morning, but I like to be in bed while it's falling. I wish this lot would go off to Hobbiton. Folk might welcome it there. "

Here's a simple one

I love to dance and twist and prance;
I shake my tail as away I sail;
Wingless I fly, into the sky.

And one the like of which I've posted before, though I don't remember in which thread

My first is a woman,
My second's a bird.
My whole is an insect,
I give you my word.

Hey, I thought it was my turn! smilies/wink.gif

I can be a blanket
though I do not keep one warm.
Unlike a towel to make one dry,
being covered with me can make one wet!
"Mr. Frodo, sir!" cried Sam, quaking. "Don't let him hurt me, sir! Don't let him turn me into anything unnatural! My old dad would take on so. I meant no harm, on my honour, sir! "

here's a cool riddle for you all, its kinda long but its worth it:

'Twas in heaven pronounced, and 'twas muttered in hell,
An echo caught faintly the sound as it fell;
On the confines of earth 'twas permitted to rest,
And the depths of the ocean its presence confessed;
'Twill be found in the sphere when 'tis riven asunder,
Be seen in the lightning and heard in the thunder.
'Twas allotted to man with his earliest breath,
Attends him at birth, and awaits him in death,
Presides o'er his happiness, honor, and health,
Is the prop of his house, and the end of his wealth.
In the heaps of the miser 'tis hoarded with care,
But is sure to be lost on the prodigal heir.
It begins every hope, every wish it must bound,
With the husbandman toils, and with monarchs is crowned.
Without it the soldier, the seaman may roam,
But woe to the wretch who expels it from home!
In the whispers of conscience its voice will be found,
Nor e'en in the whirlwind of passion be drowned.
'Twill not soften the heart; but though deaf be the ear,
It will make it acutely and instantly hear.
Yet in shade let it rest, like a delicate flower,
Ah... breathe on it softly, - it dies in an hour.

Lady Bain, I believe either the Quiz Room or Middle Earth Mayhem would be a better place for both these threads. I'm not sure it's really meet to start a whole new one, though. Do we really need four riddle threads going at once? smilies/smile.gif

I believe she has a point. Two threads are confusing sometimes, not to mention the fact that they're both getting a little long. Also, if we do decide to move, I think it should be to ME Mayhem so as not to interfere with the third riddle thread in the Quiz Room.

Bragolandune

also, to Lady_Bain, the answer is not time.
